WORK is scheduled to begin on the Tralee Fenit Greenway in the autumn, it was revealed at the meeting of Tralee Municipal District councillors on Tuesday.

A dedicated project management team is being put in place at the moment for the €3.9m project. Funding of €3m was announced last month for the greenway.

Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Jim Finucane, said there would be a sense of urgency about progressing the work. “It’s an iconic project people have been fighting for for a long time. The delivery of the project will be by direct labour with specialist contractors if required,” he said.

He also expressed his wish to hold a Tralee Municipal District meeting in Fenit over his term as Mayor.

Cllr Terry O’Brien welcomed the project and said it would be a huge boost for Tralee and was satisfied that there is a dedicated team of workers assigned to the project and that council workers would not be called away to other projects.

Cllr Norma Foley said there was huge buy-in from the public on the project and the greenway can feed into promoting Tralee as the capital of the ‘Kerry — Your Natural Escape’ campaign.
