719px-WC-2014-Brasil.svgNO doubt many a soccer-lover follower wandered the streets yesterday feeling dazed and confused wondering what to do with themselves during the first football-less day in two weeks.

Now we’re back up and running and as Celine Dion once said “things are getting see-ree-us”.

First up it’s hosts Brazil who face the flying Chileans while Columbia will take on the team in the bold corner, Uruguay.

Brazil v Chile 5pm

Belo Horizonte will play host to the opening game of the round of 16. Brazil topped their group as was to be expected, but did not do it in overly convincing fashion. A scoreless draw against Mexico generated a lot of discussion about the samba boys’ firepower.

Their South American counterparts Chile, on the other hand, have been one of the tournaments most enjoyable sides to watch with their speedy and direct attacks.

I’m really tempted to back Chile in this one, they have just been far more convincing than Brazil, but one fact remains: they struggle with height in defence. Brazil will seek to exploit this and they have a couple of decent headerers in the team.

Thiago Silva has come close a couple of times latching onto a header from a set piece. You can get both David Luiz and Thiago Silva anytime goalscorers from Ladbrokes at 12/1.

Columbia v Uruguay

Continuing the South American theme for the day, these two sides will clash in the Maracana stadium in Rio. Columbia have been one of the revelations of the competition with a number of their players making a name for themselves in the absence of Falcao.

Uruguay have been in the news for all the wrong reasons this week, after Luis Suarez’s munch on Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder. On Thursday night, this round of 16 fixture was even put in doubt because of reports that the Uruguayan players were planning to boycott it, in demonstration of the ban that was handed down to Suarez.

With all that has gone on and some of the excellent football Columbia have played, you’ve got to fancy them for this one.

James Rodriguez is in fantastic form and has scored in each of his last five games for Colombia. Both he and Jackson Martinez are 2/1 to score anytime from Ladbrokes.

Columbia have had plenty to dance about so far.
