In the second semi-final of the World Cup, the Netherlands will face Argentina for a chance to play Germany for the greatest prize in football.

Netherlands v Argentina 9pm

Both sides have had contrasting performances and runs to the final but Holland have been far more convincing. If you had to pick the best side so far you would trump for them, but as they know all too well, that counts for very little in this competition.

Argentina have relied on Messi on far too many occasions than it is comfortable. The little magician had basically dragged them to the quarter final stage. They look ominous though and like many of the great winners in the past they have got better as the tournament has gone on.

Both countries have a bit of previous as they say. They played in one of the great finals in 1978 where Argentine striker Mario Kempes consigned the lowlanders to their second consecutive World Cup defeat.

Coming into this you’ve got to fancy the Netherlands because of the way they have performed, particularly Robben who has been arguably player of the tournament.

But there is something about that South American record on home soil (apart from last night) that says Argentina will shade an incredibly tight and cagey affair. Ladbrokes will give you 6/1 for a 1-0 win to Argentina 1-0.

More of the same? Argentina’s Mario Kempes runs away after scoring the winner of the World Cup final in 1978.
