719px-WC-2014-Brasil.svgALMOST half way through the group stage and a few countries have already bit the dust.

Today Italy will look to cement their position in Group D against Costa Rica, then it will be a derby (of sorts) between France and the Swiss, followed by Ecuador and Honduras.

Italy v Costa Rica

Both sides impressed in their opening round games for different reasons, Italy for their control and Costa Rica for their guts and endeavour when they pulled off a shock  3-1 victory over hotly-tipped Uruguay.

As the English huffed and puffed in the rainforest, the Italians looked their ever nonchalant selves when dealing with the ‘Three Lions’ attack.

That big game, big tournament mentality they have is priceless and it should stand to them again against a Costa Rican side who’ve already exceeded expectations.

We expect Italy to win, but when they do, no matter what the opposition they rarely do it big. Paddy Power will offer you 6/1  for a 2-0 Azzurri win.

Remember Andrea Pirlo‘s shot off the bar against England, Unibet are offering odds of 11/1 for him to score outside the box.

Switzerland v France

This is a battle of two culinary giants, but what they serve up tonight could be unsavoury. Of the major nations, i.e. the only countries who stand a chance of winning, France have been spoken about the least. ‘Les Blues’ were commanding in their 3-0 victory over Honduras, but that was to be expected.

Switzerland were really quite lucky to overcome Ecuador in a dreary affair, a dramatic 93rd minute winner by them, couldn’t slap a bit of gloss on that one.

This match, essentially, will decide who tops the group, but the Swiss know a draw will most likely qualify them.

Given their cautious approach in the past, they may batten down the hatches knowing they stand a chance of stifling the temperamental French. Going against the grain of results in this World Cup, Skybet will give 10/1 on a 0-0 draw.

Honduras v Equador

It’s difficult to see either of these sides come out of the group, but both will be looking to get their tournament back on track  after sustaining crushing defeats in the opening round of games.

Honduras looked well out of their depth against France, while Ecuador were extremely unlucky to lose out against the Swiss who scored a 93rd minute winner.

Ecuador are strong favorites for this and it’s hard to go against that, Boylesports will give you 7/2 on a draw at half time, Ecuador full time.

Pirlo comes so close in the opening round match against England.
