Thirteen-years-old Mike had tasted defeat twice this season to two eventual All Ireland Champions in the Munster Final and the Irish Cadets, but he was on the right side of a very close contest this time.

“Where others might have quit, Mike stuck with it and put in the hard work for the last two months training every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, while road running every Tuesday and Thursday,” said Donie Griffin, a coach and PRO of Tralee Boxing Club.

“This is the kind of dedication needed if you are to succeed  in boxing which has become very popular due to the success of Katie Taylor and the Irish Olympic Boxing Team. Hopefully this win will inspire other members of Tralee Boxing Club to work hard and someday we might be cheering on young Mike in the Olympics someday,” said Donie.

Well done Mike on a great achievement.
