Zoe O’Connor: “We Are Treated Like Children, But Expected To Act Like Adults”

Zoe 1I KNOW that I am only half way through my schooling years, but I would like to believe that I have learned a lot.

When I say this, I am not referring to all the maths equations that I have learned to solve (or not learned to solve as the case may be), but rather what I have learned from the schooling system itself.

I have never been a person to hate school. I know how to get where I want to go, I have to get up every morning, pull on a uniform and get out the door.

I don’t even mind sitting through every class, taking notes and doing everything else that you have to do to get through the door.

I do realise that in my mom’s generation school was a lot different, and that I am lucky to be in a school where rulers are just for measuring lengths.

However, one thing that I do not believe has changed is the way that students are expected to act. I don’t just mean that we are expected to not run around the school killing each other, but I also mean the way that we are treated in the more social sense.

One of my friends summed it up perfectly for me, “We are treated like children but expected to act like adults”.

The schooling system tends to think that it is right to dumb things down for us, yet, their most used phrase is “I expected better from you” or “you should be more mature”. Fast forward to the next day when they are using text language to try and communicate with us.

I understand what they are trying to accomplish, but I think they should just go for one tactic or the other.

Treat us like children and expect that maturity level. Or treat us like adults and expect that maturity level. You can’t just settle for somewhere in between.

While we’re on the subject of school, teachers are totally kidding about those tests right?
