Zoe’s World: Support Your Local Boutiques!

Zoe O'Connor 1IF you look through my wardrobe, you will see a whole pile of clothes gathered from a multitude of high street stores.

However, if you look through my mom’s wardrobe, you will see a whole pile of clothes from all the different boutiques in town. So who do you think is doing the better job at supporting our town?

As weird as it seems, I got to go with my mom on this one.

When you walk through Tralee, you will see a multitude of boutiques, ranging from IOTA, Jasmine, Carraig Donn, Annbury’s, Weardrobe, Rockalilly, Pamela Scotts and so many more.

Then, when you stretch a little further afield you have Hannon’s in Castleisland, MacBees in Killarney, Simplicity in Kenmare and so many more really brilliant boutiques.

Then of course, I could go on with all the amazing designers that we just have sitting on our doorstep. Tina Griffin, Colin Horgan, Carol Kennelly, Nuala McCarthy, Karyn Moriarty, Catherine Kelly, Clodagh Irwin Owens are only a few of those people.

Then you have Listowel, which includes Coco Boutique, Aoife Hannon and Orla O’Connor.

So you can’t say that we are lacking in choices for our fashion needs.

So the next time that you head towards Penneys to pick up the new season trends, stop in your tracks and just wander down the street to the one of the local boutiques or even one of the local designers and pick up something there.

I can guarantee you that they have been paying a lot of attention to the trends. They will certainly be giving you a lot more advice about how to wear these trends anyway.

Okay, okay; I know that boutiques and designers cost a bit more than the average high street store but I am not asking you to buy absolutely every article of clothing from there but I am just asking that when you do have that extra bit of money, spend it in the town.

You just need to invest in this town’s economy to keep it alive. If you are not too fond of the whole “supporting the town” thing (we frown on you), then at least do it for the personal experience. Do it for the convenience, the style tips, the conversation and the fun.

The only reason my wardrobe contains a lot of high street stuff is because I find it harder to save up that extra bit of cash, considering I technically don’t have a job. Feel free to donate to the cause mom.

I think that we should reinvent the word high street and make it the local term for shopping in the amazing boutiques and design studios that we have to offer.

Or not, whatever…
