Zoe’s World: Why Wanting To Get Out Of Here Isn’t A Bad Thing

Zoe O'Connor 1NOT so long ago, I wrote a little post about what I wanted to do with my future – and if I do say so myself, it was a quite an exact plan.

It is true that I know exactly what I want to do with my future and I am really excited for my life to really get started.

But my masterplan just happens to involve leaving the country as soon as possible. Which I thought was a perfectly acceptable wish, but apparently not.

I want to leave here, but it is not because I don’t love it here. I think that many people around my age can’t wait to get out of here, and they are often judged for it.

When celebrities leave Ireland to pursue their careers, they are never truly respected when they come back. It’s like that when you leave it’s forever and there is no return.

What I didn’t realise was that there is actually a difference between “Irish Celebrities” and “Celebrities from Ireland”, it’s only a small word variation but they are actually treated very differently.

Irish celebrities are the ones who etch out their careers in Ireland and who never fly the nest. They are the ones who are on Irish television and the ones who are the first to come to mind when put on the spot.

Celebrities from Ireland are the ones with less respect even though they may have etched out international careers.

People then tend to forget that they are actually Irish and some people would prefer to forget about it. I find it a bit scary that people write off Bono straight away, he is a lot better off than the Irish celebrities, trust me.

So then, even if none of us crazy teens never achieve our wildest dreams by leaving the country, will we still be seen as the ones who left. Who abandoned the country?

But I don’t think that it should be seen like this and I am here to convince you otherwise if I can.

So yes, us optimistic teenagers want to leave our lovely green grass homelands but it doesn’t mean that we don’t appreciate where we are from.

I, for one, am really proud to be Irish and just because I want to do a Taylor Swift on this one and flee to New York doesn’t mean anything.

I think that is cruelly unfair that just because our dreams are not situated in Ireland, that we are looked down on because of it.

I can’t wait to get out of here. I can’t wait to spread my wings. I can’t wait to realise my dreams.

So don’t you guys try and stop us teens.
