Zoe O'Connor 1IT’S that time of year again!

We are back to the racing season, and more importantly (in my humble opinion) it is time for Listowel Races.

Now, if you know me, you will be very much aware that I have no notions about the actual horse racing itself and am only present for the style and fun of it all.

Honestly though, I can’t even pretend that I am the ‘hipster’ minority on that one as I am pretty sure that a lot of people in attendance may not even know what a horse looks like.

I personally love Ladies Day as much as the next person and I hope to see you all there in your finest gowns and fall get-ups this Friday.

But, I have to say that the day that has a special place in my heart is the following day, the Listowel Races Vintage Day, which is run by the Tidy Town Committee in Listowel.

It may take the cake as my favourite day for a number of reasons… One of them being that I don’t have to miss school because it’s on a Saturday. (Yeah, I’m one of ‘those’ kids..)

Honestly though, over the past few years (this will be the fourth year of the event) it has really taken off and more and people from here, there and everywhere have begun to enter the competition.

The fashion is incredible (what else would you expect really) but it’s the stories that make me the happiest.

People wear pieces from their great-grandmother’s wedding or older men wear the suit that they have had since they were 15!

There is always a jaw-dropping moment and it actually makes my heart swell up at all of the memories attached to each item everyone is wearing. On top of that – it isn’t like any ‘best dressed competition’ that I have been too (and trust me I have been to a LOT).

I know that many Kerry competitions can be the exception, as we tend to not be too ruthless (outside the rules of the GAA), but some of these things can be pretty damn cutthroat.

This is the total exception, every year, everyone seems to be genuinely delighted to see you and hear your story.

So if you want to get involved in this year’s event on Saturday, raid your wardrobe and see what vintage pieces you can find! I can’t wait to hear your story.

Also, side note, this may be the only time when the cliché ‘best dressed competition’ lines like ‘I found this last night in my grandmother’s closet’ may actually apply.
