Zoe’s World: Us Teens Aren’t Conceited, Self-Obsessed Little Brats

Zoe 1I THINK that the current generation of teenagers have a bad reputation, but for all the wrong reasons.

Personally, I think that the teens of today get an awful hard time. It’s quite possible that all teenagers of every generation get a hard time.

But considering that I am speaking for my own generation in this piece, I am clearly going to rank the teens of today as more important.

Now I appeal to all those parents, aunts, uncles; basically anyone who isn’t a teenager, to come up with three words you believe define this generation of teens.

If the words; phone, selfies or social media come up, it’s clearly a bad sign. However, even though I could easily take your side and agree on the phone front, I won’t. I will have to be loyal to my team as it were, and fight their corner.

Yes, I know that we all use our phones a lot. Big deal, who doesn’t? Just because our generation has given us the confidence to take a snapchat selfie in the middle of the street, doesn’t mean that we are selfish and conceited. I think being vain and being confident can be very interchangeable on certain people’s tongues and I don’t that’s fair.

We are the generation who have decided that it is alright to be ourselves. Sure, sometimes it still takes time, but we are definitely getting there.

There is no such thing as ‘branding’ anymore. You can pretty much be whoever you want to be. There are no longer the barriers of being gay or straight; you can be pansexual, genderfluid and a million other things. You can be you.

And personally I think that’s pretty damn awesome.

Not only that but our generation is continuing the fight for equality, without harbouring any old fashioned ideas. Feminism is no longer a dirty word. We are making changes, and we are taking steps in the right direction.

True, we are not fully responsible for all the greatness in society and far from it. But we at least need our fair dues for our contribution. We are not perfect, but we are learning to accept our imperfections.

So no, I don’t think we are selfish, social media obsessed, conceited little brats. I think that we are the ones who are embracing the changes in our society while making a few of our own.

Just because we are snap chatting while doing it, doesn’t make it any less valid.
