Zoe’s World: Wear What You Want And Ignore Those Who Judge

Zoe O'Connor 1THE teenage years commence a whole pile of changes.

But other than the physical changes, like the bad skin and growth spurts (I am personally still waiting on mine), there are also a lot of mental changes.

Most adults have probably had the word “moody” pass through their heads right about now, but I was actually going to refer to the social awkwardness that often commences in the teen years.

It is something that I have already discussed in the past on my blog, but social awkwardness branches out in many areas.

One of the main feelings is “everyone is looking at me” and I know that this feeling does not just disappear when you hit your twenties.

It’s a self confidence issue that people have to deal with almost everyday. And the “almost” is referring to the days when you don’t leave your couch in search for a happier life in your favourite TV programme.

This “everyone is looking at me” attitude can effect everything that we do. Particularly for me, and a lot of people out there, it affects what we wear.

When I am buying something, I have to actually think if I will be self confident enough to wear the outfit in public. My wardrobe is filled with clothing that I have deemed too “showy” or too “different” to wear walking around the town.

This kind of attitude resulted in me just wearing jeans, t-shirts and hoodies for the majority of my “tween” years.

Not only does this attitude affect what we wear, but it can also affect a lot of basic human interactions.

Walking down the street can become a challenge. My mom has probably heard me say the words “I shouldn’t have worn this today” just as I am about to exit the car, more times than you can imagine.

I am positive that I am not the only one who has reconsidered wearing an outfit that is deemed as “different” because we are afraid of the looks that we are going to get.

What I am about to say took me a long time to figure out, but by the time that the realisation struck, I was wearing whatever the hell I wanted anywhere that I wanted.

Let’s be honest here, I think most people have too much going on in their lives to actually examine your chosen footwear. Well, I hope that most people strive to achieve more in their lives than examining your outfit.

And the people that do take this considerable time to look you up and down, are they really worth your time?

Are they really worth a split second if they have nothing better to do, than judge you for wearing what you want to wear or walking the way that you want to walk?

So, the next time that you feel that “what will people think”, “everyone is looking at me” sensation creeping up on you, just blast a sassy Taylor Swift song in your ears and strut like you own the place.

I promise you that if they judge you for being you, you will own the place before they do.

Guaranteed.
