RACE NIGHT: Our hardworking Finance Committee is asking us all to join our fellow Rockies for the social event of the year at the Austin Stacks Gala Race Night on Friday week, 26th November!

After nearly two years in hibernation, the great re-emergence of the Rockie faithful will take place in the clubhouse for what promises to be a wonderfully entertaining night of banter, betting and beverages!

Our 2021 Race Night is a hugely important fundraising event for Austin Stacks to help cover the costs of running the largest juvenile boys & girls club in Kerry, to finance pitch maintenance & upgrade works, and to support our Senior Men’s team for what we hope will be a long and prosperous winter campaign!

The Race Night highlights include ten races on multiple screens, special auction and legend races, €1,500 in cash prizes to be won, full bar and finger food and best dressed lady and gent competitions.

SENIOR FOOTBAL: The Co. Championship semi finals go ahead at the weekend. Our game, against St. Brendans in Austin Stack Park, will be on Saturday evening and will be live on RTE TV with a start time of  5.30pm. Kerins O’Rahillys and Dr. Crokes will meet on the following day, also in Austin Stack Park, at 2.30pm.

This will be our 6th Co. Championship meeting with the divisional side. Our 1st meeting was on 23rd August 1936 in a round 3 game, which we won by the narrowest of margins (0-5 to 0-4). We then lost the next three meetings. In 1950 we lost by 2-5 to 1-2.

In 1958 our boys must have stayed in the Greyhound Bar because we lost by 2-7 to no score. Another 48 years elapsed before we met again. In this game in 2006 in Lerrig Brendans had a nine points win (3-11 to 1-8). And the last time we met it was also in Lerrig on 20th June 2009 and we had a twelve points win on that occasion (2-12 to 0-6).

FITNESS CLASSES: The Individual Pod Fitness Training sessions continues in the Clubhouse every Tuesday and Thursday evenings  from 7pm to 8pm. All are welcome. Contact Diane at 087 7940531for further information.

NOVEMBER IN THE PAST (15/11 to 21/11). Many things were happening on the field of play during this week in the past so we have to confine it to a limited random selection of just three in year order. We start in 1975 (16th Nov) when we won our 7th Co. SF Championship defeating Mid Kerry (1-7 to 1-4) after a replay. Team:Teddy Brick, Garry Scollard, John O’Keeffe, Paul Lucey, Fintan Lawlor, Tony O’Keeffe, Ger O’Keeffe, Denny Long, Timmy Sheehan, Ger Power, Mikey Sheehy, Jackie Power, Colm Mangan, Jo Jo Barrett, Tommy Bracker O’Regan.

Then in 2001(18th Nov) our B team won the Molyneaux Cup for the second time in three years – defeating Laune Rangers 2-10 to 0-10 after extra time. Team: Jonathan Conway, Shane Guthrie, Don Shanahan, Eddie Dowling (Capt), Alex Donovan (0-1), Tommy Costello, Conor Carroll, David Leonard, Kieran Donaghy (1-0), Martin Courtney (1-3), Timmy Lynch (0-1), Mark O’Regan, Anthony Morrisson, Seamus Smith (0-2), Anthony Moriarty. Subs: David Conway (0-1), Pádraig Sugrue, Michael Hogan (0-2), Tommy O’Connor.

In 2003 (16th Nov) our C Team won their 2nd Barrett Cup Final in a row and their 4th up to then. The game in Cordal against another Laune Rangers team ended with a five points win (2-6 to 0-7). Team:Darren Carey, Danny Carroll, Gordon Kerins, Alan Tobin, Kenneth Leahy (Capt), Pádraig McCannon, Liam Walsh, Gareth Clifford, Billy Curtin (0-1), David Conway, Michael Hogan (0-2), Joey O’Connor (0-2), Peter Williams (1-0), Gearóid McCann,  Anthony Moriarty (1-1).

Also on the field of play we mention two individual items. In 1991 (17th Nov) Martin McKivergan played his first game with the Kerry Senior Hurlers in a NHL game. And in 2008 (20th Nov) Wayne Guthrie was named the Munster Minor Footballer of the Year.

Finally during this week in 1918 (15th Nov) one of the founding members of the Club the previous year, Christy Barrett, died at the young age of 30 after contracting the 1918 Spanish Flu. Christy was a brother of Joe and Tommy who were outstanding Club and County Footballers later on and to-day Christy’s nephew, Eddie, is still serving the Club as he has done all his life – our current Co. Board delegate (along with Jim Naughton).

MTU Wins Special Award For COVID Impact

.

THE Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022 has placed Munster Technological University (MTU) as both the highest ranked of Ireland’s Technological Universities and also the winner of a special award – University of the Year for COVID Impact.

Professor Maggie Cusack, President of MTU, is delighted that this has been recognised by the Sunday Times.

She stated that demand from CAO applicants has surged, with first-preference honours degree applications for MTU courses rising by more than 16%, almost twice the national average, while first-preference degree application levels increased by almost 4%, a very positive outcome in a hugely important programme category.

Continued below…

.

In addition, she said that the KTI Annual Knowledge Transfer Survey 2020 indicated that total research expenditure in MTU exceeded €22M, the highest total achieved across Ireland’s Technological Universities and Institutes of Technology.

In relation to winning the award for University of the Year for COVID Impact, President Cusack acknowledged the resilience, commitment and ingenuity of MTU students and staff who have found new ways to learn, teach, research and innovate during a period of immense challenge.

“I am proud to lead a university community of students and staff who, despite all that they have had to deal with, continue to succeed together and to excel across all areas of our activity,” she said.

The Sunday Times adjudicating panel were hugely impressed with the MTU photo which won the SFI Research Image of the Year for 2020.

“Talking Heads” is an image produced in 2020 by researchers at MTU, MTU Blackrock Castle Observatory and the MTU Centre for Advanced Photonics and Process Analysis, when investigating the effectiveness of mask materials in preventing the spread of aerosol droplets. It shows the spread of aerosol droplets from two talking medical dummies, one masked, the other not.

According to Alastair McCall, Editor of The Sunday Times Good University Guide, the public health messaging of this image is as relevant today as the pandemic continues as when it was first published in 2020 at a time when it was only just becoming apparent that Covid transmission was aerosol, rather than contact-driven. “They say a picture is worth one thousand words; this is a picture that could also save thousands of lives, and on its own earned MTU our University of the Year award for COVID Impact for its significance and societal reach,” he said.

SENIOR CO. CHAMPIONSHIP SEMIFINAL

On Sunday November 21st at 2.30p.m. our Senior team take on Dr Crokes in Austin Stack Park, Tralee.

This is a huge occasion for our Club. We are looking for as many of our children, parents and families to come out and support on the day, wearing our club colours  if at all possible.

Many of our senior players and coaches work with our juvenile club so it’s time we give something back by coming on the day and supporting our team.

Get your colours up and show our pride in our Club.

JUVENILE AND LADIES NOTES

This week we have combined the juvenile and ladies notes as we remember a very special lady…a good friend to all in our club  as her 1st anniversary approaches.

Marie Nix, who was taken far too early was the sweetest, kindest lady one could ever meet. She had this mischievous smile and was so full of fun.

Marie Nix , always in our hearts and never forgotten with her U12 Girls

For those of us who were blessed to have known Marie we remember the fun we all had together. Marie was involved with the U8 and U10 Girls initially .Karon Mclysaght, Rory Kerins and Adrian Doody enjoyed many a Saturday morning training with Marie .

A few of these young ladies are now playing minor football. Marie took her football seriously and did each girl know her basic skills! This still shows today in the girls Marie had at U8 and 10.

The girls still have fond memories of Marie’s wonderful fun training sessions and the great times they had. It’s many a place they travelled to in Kerry and Cork… great fun always on the bus and it was great for team bonding. Marie was away ahead of the time with how she trained the girls.

It was all about the girls, they came first. Each girl was treated equally and there was no favouritism. They were ‘my girls’ as Marie called them.

It is because of Marie’s influence that those young ladies are the wonderful players and team that they are today. She was a trainer who truly brought out the best in each one, inspired confidence and we are so glad that many, especially her daughter Katie, have gone on to play at such a high level. Mom must be so proud.

Karon McLysaght, Shirley and Adrian Doody, Paddy Hayes , Rory Kerins and Danny Leane all worked closely with Marie at some stage… every moment each of us spent with Marie is now a memory we can cherish again and again. We were so lucky.

Your brightness will always shine down on us from above Marie. You are our rainbow , always leading to the pot of gold as our ladies club progresses every year. Thank you for sharing your wonderful qualities with so many of us. You still live on in so many of our hearts.

We might not say it or show it but a day doesn’t go by when so many of us remember our beautiful, sweet  Marie.

May we all take a minute to think of Marie and her beautiful family and friends on Saturday, November 20th on her first anniversary. John, Stephen, Katie, Anthony, Ger, John, Marie’s wonderful extended family and dear friends you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

You are forever in our hearts Marie!

UNDER 7 BOYS & GIRLS

49 boys and girls trained on Sunday in addition to taking part in the pre match formalities for the John Mitchel’s Sylvie Mason tournament.

In addition, 8 of our under 7s girls participated in the competition playing alongside their under 8 and 10s compatriots. They played outstandingly and are a credit to themselves and their parents.  To say, we as coaches, are very proud of them is an understatement.

Our next and last session of the year is Sunday the 28th of November.  I’m sure there will be a meal presentation and even some treats on the day.  Looking forward to seeing all our under 7s then
Training next week indoors for all in our fantastic indoor facility (new joiners always welcome):
Age: 6/7 years @ 10.15am

U8/U10 GIRLS

The annual Sylvie Mason blitz brought our season to a close in great style last Sunday morning and with the quality of football on display it was a fitting end to a super season.

The atmosphere was electric and the girls put on a great display of football. The morning began with the traditional parade and the girls marched proudly around the pitch behind piper Karen Mc Mahon.

The girls were divided in to 4 teams, and each team was named after John Mitchel’s legends, John Dalton, Robert Dowd, John Thorny O Shea and Alan Conway. Competition was fierce and scores were hard fought for.

Throughout the morning the brilliant point scoring and tough tackling were there for all to see and when the scores were calculated after the round of matches it was Ava Byrne who led team Robert Dowd to victory.

The coaches would like to thank all the girls for the hard work and commitment throughout the season. We watched the girl’s footballing ability grow week on week and it made us very proud to see the quality of play at the blitz.

We wish all the girls who are moving on to u12s next year the very best of luck and look forward to welcoming all the girls who will join the squad from the academy.

See you all early in 2022. Padraig, Tanya and Brian.

UNDER 9 BOYS
Our u9s finished their season today in what was probably the nicest day of the year in 2021

16 degrees of heat welcomed our boys as they played in our famous Sylvie Mason end of year blitz.

We split into 4 teams and the games went on the average score (no points for winning) and boy did we have some morning of football.

The skills on show were superb with plenty of harassing tackling sprinting shouting and scoring with every kid getting a touch of the ball and the main thing Having Fun!!!! Also, the improvement in some of our boys was Brilliant!!

The winners collected their trophies and all the boys’ got medals and goodie bags to round off on what was probably the best day we had at the club this year.

We want to say a huge thanks to the boys and their parents for coming up every Sunday. Also, a massive thanks to the mentors and in particular Mark Mcevoy for organising a great year for our boys.
We wish you all health and happiness in the run up to Xmas and please remember keep practising your skills and we will see you all again in 2022
Up the Mitchel’s !!!💚💛👍💛💚💚💛💚💛

Under 11 Boys
Firstly, to say that we were blessed with the weather is an understatement! What a morning we had for our annual end of year blitz!

Our girls and boys took to the field for one last this year in eager anticipation of the action that lay ahead. Karen McMahon on bagpipes lead our small army of children down the main field and back again finishing off with a rousing rendition of the national anthem
Then it was straight into action!! After a morning of great skills, goals, points, dubious refereeing decisions and total action the following were the winning teams that so deserved the honor of winning on Sylvie Mason day
Team Robert Dowd – winners of Girls u8/10s
Team Bruddy Borrows – winners of boys u9s
Team Teddy Dowd – winners of boys u11s

Captains Ava, Ryan and Calvin collected the winning trophies to the delight of their team mates and both in their captains’ speeches thanked all the players and coaches for what was a great year

Huge thanks to Tanya, Sonya and Sadbh in the shop. Joanne, Megan and Hannah who did the goodie bags. Humongous thanks to Mark Mcevoy (Juvenile Chair) who organized the day brilliantly. Massive thanks also to George Lowe who said some lovely words about Sylvia Mason and the contribution he made to the club juvenile section all those many years ago. Also, thanks to the fields committee, referees, coaches’ parents and of course all of our future stars to make our last day the best day of the year 🤩🤩😃😃🙌🙌🙌
So that’s it for another year – please remember to keep practicing over the Winter, keep safe and see you all in early 2022
Up the Mitchels💛💚💛💚💛💚

UNDER 17 Boys
Our under 17 team played against Na Gaeil in the semi-finals of the town/ Brendan’s Championship in Ballyseede under lights, unfortunately on the night Na Gaeil proved too strong for us, fair play to the team and management for playing this game as we have had along lay off, our u17s are now finished for the 2021 season. Shield Final:

Castleisland District 2-16 St. Brendans 2-8

Castleisland District lifted the County U15 Shield on Sunday, but only after a great battle against St. Brendans.

Castleisland made the brighter start, with Jack O’Donoghue (2) and Killian Dennehy putting them three points in front. St. Brendans quickly steadied, however, with Hugh Lenihan, Ryan Hickey, and Liam Óg O’Connor leveling up. Ruairí Brosnan and the outstanding Jack O’Donoghue had Castleisland 0-5 to 0-3 in front at the first water break. Kian Downey and O’Donoghue stretched that lead before Hugh Lenihan pulled one back. St. Brendans were also denied a goal,

Keelan Best’s rocket well saved by Larry Nolan. Ruairí Brosnan made it double scores, 0-8 to 0-4, before Hugh Lenihan won and converted a free. Just before the break, St. Brendans’ Billy Doyle crossed to Liam Cooper, and when the hapless keeper failed to hold his shot, Tom Flaherty pounced for a goal to level matters, 0-8 to 1-5.

Castleisland came storming out of the blocks in the second half and only seconds had elapsed before they had a goal of their own, Maurice Lane finishing beautifully to the net. Jack O’Donoghue and Jack Joy added points to bring their lead to five points. Billy Doyle pulled one back but Maurice Lane and Jack O’Donoghue fired over for Castleisland. Liam Cooper and Kian Downey exchanged points just before the second water break to make it 1-13 to 1-7 in favor of Castleisland.

Hugh Lenihan scored his fourth point for St. Brendans on the restart but Maurice Lane replied and Ruairí Brosnan responded in kind. St. Brendans did score a cracking goal through Liam Óg O’Connor but Eoin O’Connor promptly fired to the net at the other end to seal the victory. Coiste na nÓg Chairman Tommy Cronin presented the Shield to victorious captain Cillian Reidy.

The Treasurer and Secretary presented their reports for the year and the Chairpersons from Camogie and Hurling gave their address to those in attendance.  All reports commented on another year of disruption due to Covid and the challenges presented especially in the early part of the year as we were all still in lockdown.

Despite these challenges, 2021 was a positive year for the club with membership numbers growing, especially on the Camogie side of the house.   It was also the first year that the club was able to field two adult hurling teams.  The lockdown period also provided an ideal opportunity to review the club development plan.

On the finance side the National Club Draw was a great success and helped to grow the club’s capital account which will be used for the future development of the club.  Winning a prize for being the top selling club in Munster was an added bonus and a great testimony to all involved in organising this draw.

The popularity of the club summer camp and the Kellogg’s Cul camp was noted in a number of the reports.

The club was well represented this year at county level in both hurling and camogie.  A special congratulations was mentioned for our U12 Camogie teams who won their respective county league competitions.  Congratulations was also given to our U13 hurlers who won the St Patricks GAA Invitational blitz in early October.

A number of references were made to the success of the new position of Development and Facilities officer that was created last year and credit goes to Carmel O’Shea who took on the challenge for the year.

Carmel has put in a lot of ground work to help the club find a permanent home.

This role also took responsibility for a lot of the day to day activities such as ensuring pitch availability, scheduling matches/training and improving our facilities at Caherslee.

The club are also very grateful to Kerins O’Rahillys who shared the use of their Healy Park grounds during the busy summer season.

As the club heads into it’s ten year anniversary a number of club members commented on the positive future for the young club with growing numbers and now competing at both juvenile and adult level in both hurling and camogie.

While most of the founding members are still involved it was noted as another positive that none of the current senior club executives were involved initially.

While the future is looking bright, it was noted that we would like to see more members getting involved to help build on the first nine years of work.

The annual reports from all club officers and coaches will be published on our blog page in the coming few days.

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 86

Bright DCU Saints 72

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors got back to winning ways at the Tralee Sports Complex last night as they saw off the challenge of Bright DCU Saints by 86-72.

The Warriors led throughout with a dominant third quarter setting up a comfortable win in the end.

In an entertaining and at times frantic opening quarter the home side was in range early with three point scores from Daniel Jokubaitis and Aaron Calixte setting the pace but Saint kept in touch through Julius Brooks and Martin Neary before Ron Elksnis and Fergal O’Sullivan pushed the hosts 18-11 ahead.

.

Brooks and Benjamin Durox combined for Saints to restore parity but when Calixte and Keelan Crowe fired in from close range and Brandon Cotton opened his account from outside the Warriors led 25-23 at the first break.

The Warriors stormed into the second quarter to hit four straight threes in a row from Brandon Cotton, Daniel Jokubaitis, Fergal O’Sullivan and Keelan Crowe but Kevin Lacey replied with three identical scores from inside and Durox added another to keep the hosts lead to 36-31.

The Warriors continued to maintain the upper hand in the contest with four scores from Calixte and one each from Crowe and Cotton.

But Saints dug in to find the basket from inside and out through Donal Monaghan and with the final action of the quarter Jeff Gordon fired in a huge three to cut the gap to 49-44 at the long break.

The third quarter proved decisive for the home side as they outscored their visitors by 21-14. Calixte was proving himself to be a class apart with another two scores either side of a Fergal O’Sullivan three pointer.

But Saints to their credit hit back with outside scores from Kevin Lacey and Durox and a couple from inside from Martin Neary saw just two between the sides.

However, a couple of moments of Calixte magic saw the Warriors point guard add 10 points to push the hosts 66-56 and with Saints in foul trouble Crowe, Cotton, O’Hanlon and Calixte all added from the line to see the home side take a 72-58 lead into the final quarter.

The Saints got to work early in the fourth to chip away at the Warriors lead with Gordon, Neary and Durox combining to cut the lead to single figures.

James Fernane found the time and space in the corner to fire in his first three of the night before Calixte pulled up to do likewise a minute late.

Scores from Neary and Durox late on kept the Warriors honest but Aaron Calixte capped a superb individual performance by completing the Warriors scoring tally from a lay up and two visits to the line.

The American hit a game high 38 points to put his personal seal on the 86-72 win.

Top scorers: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors: Aaron Calixte 38, Fergal O’Sullivan 11, Daniel Jokubaitis 11

Bright DCU Saints: Benjamin Durox 20, Martin Neary 14, Kevin Lacey 9

• Next up for the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors is another home fixture with League arch rivals Griffith College Templeogue at the Tralee Sport Complex on Saturday next with tip off at 7.30pm.
