Austin Stacks 2-9

St Brendans 1-12

(Stacks win on penalties 5-3)

AUSTIN Stacks are into the county final after beating St Brendans in a dramatic semi-final which went to penalties earlier this evening at Austin Stack Park.

They will now await the result of tomorrow’s other semi-final between Kerins O’Rahillys and Dr Crokes to see who they will play in the final in two weeks, with every neutral in Tralee wishing for a Rockies v Strand Road derby final.

The game was largely uneventful up to five minutes before the end of normal time when a goal livened up proceedings and was the catalyst for the drama that followed.

The first half of the game belonged to the two defences who kept the forwards quiet and forced them off into errors and shooting wides on a number of occasions.

St Brendans were dealt a blow just before the short whistle when their captain Alan O’Donoghue went off injured. The half-time score was 0-3 each and the only sparks flying were from the Stacks fans’ flares on the terraces.

St Brendans suffered another  blow almost immediately after the restart when Kerry star Diarmuid O’Connor went off injured.

Scores were scarce in the second-half with Ivan Parker and Darragh O’Brien trading points before the goal from O’Donnell in the 56th minute put the Stacks two points up.

Darragh O’Brien — who scored all Stacks six points in normal time — took a free which was falling short, but O’Donnell fisted it past the St Brendans keeper.

.

However St Brendans came back. Dan Goggin pulled it to a one-point game in the last minute of injury time and they won a free soon after the kick-out.

St Brendans keeper Eoghan O’Brien came up to take the kick which fell short, but a Stacks player got a touch and it went out for a 45. O’Brien got a second crack and nailed it to send it to extra-time. Full-time Austin Stacks 1-6 St Brendan 0-9.

.

Stacks started extra-time the better, going two up before Ivan Parker pulled one back on the seventh minute. Parker had a free to level it in the tenth minute, but he missed and straight from the restart Stacks went on the attack.

The ball came to Sean Quilter who hit an innocuous kick which looked like it was falling short, but Eoghan O’Brien misjudged and it went over his head into the net. Stacks 2-8 to 0-10 up at half-time in extra-time.

.

St Brendans battled back though and brought it to two point game with scores from Thomas Kearns and David O’Callaghan and when Ivan Parker hit a belter of a goal from 20 yards with a minute left, it looked like it would be the divisional side’s day.

But Stacks went straight down the field and won a free which was pointed by Sean Quilter. Stacks won the kickout and after playing it around the midfield area they engineered another free, but Quilter hit the upright and it went wide. 2-9 to 1-12…penalties!

Sean Quilter scored first for Stacks, but Ivan Parker’s shot was saved by Wayne Guthrie.

Adam Curran, Michael O’Donnell Michael O’Gara scored for Stacks with Mikey Kelliher Jack Barry and Andrew Barry netting for St Brendans.

That left Kieran Donaghy to score the penalty to send the Rockies through and he duly obliged.  Over to you Kerins O’Rahillys!

Finnegan On Films: A Varied Selection Of Movies To Enjoy This Week

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, on an eclectic selection of movies on TV over the next week…

Let’s get right into the reviews with an absolute gem of a film for all ages, Inside Out (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1)

Inside eleven year old Riley’s head live a team of personal emotions – Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust – who lead her through life.  Joy is in charge initially, allowing Riley to enjoy a happy life.

However, Riley’s life undergoes a significant change when she and her parents move to a new city.  She is plunged into depression and the emotions face a crisis that threatens their world.

This is a simply glorious film, built around the premise of the Numskulls in the Beano comic, if you remember them.

With a cast of vocal talent including Amy Poehler, Richard Kind, Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan, this is a wonderfully imaginative narrative that might well help start conversations around the issue of mental health with the young ones in your life.

Kingsman: The Secret Service (Saturday 9.20pm RTE2) is a fun romp in the Spy genre with echoes of both Bond and the Avengers (Steed and Emma Peel rather than the Marvel Superheroes).

Continued below…

.

Gary “Eggsy” Unwin (Taron Egerton) is a teenager with special talents but without a purpose in life.

He is recruited by a secret Spy organisation to help in the fight against wealthy megalomaniac Richmond Valentine (Samuel L Jackson) who has a unique concern with climate change.

Directed and Co-written by Matthew Vaughan and Jane Goldman, the film also stars Colin Firth, Mark Strong and Michael Caine.  The long delayed prequel is due for release next month.

Christine (Saturday 9.15pm TG4) is the true story of Christine Chubbuck, a news reporter who committed suicide live on air in 1974.

Rebecca Hall gives a powerful performance in the title role as the film follows her struggles, personal and professional, leading up to the tragedy.  Also starring Michael C. Hall and Tracy Letts, this is a story that has resonances of the classic Oscar winner Network.

The Beguiled (Monday 9.30pm TG4) is a remake of sorts of the 1971 Clint Eastwood film of the same name.  A wounded Civil War soldier is brought into an all-girls school.  Naturally the “rooster in the hen house” dilemma brings all sorts of emotions to the fore.

The film is directed by Sofia Coppola, who also wrote the screenplay, and stars Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning.

Two late night films based on real life events are next.

Thirteen Days (Friday 12.05am RTE1) tells the story of inside the Kennedy White House during the thirteen days of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis as seen through the eyes of Kenny O’Donnell (Kevin Costner).

A Bridge Too Far (Friday 12.40am TG4) is the story of the Allied attempts to capture the key bridges around Arnhem during World War Two that turned out to be a military disaster.

Directed by Richard Attenborough and a Screenplay by William Goldman, it stars Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Gene Hackman, Lawrence Olivier and everyone else.  Enjoy and stay safe.
