Austin Stacks GAA Club News

RACE NIGHT: The only place to be on this coming Friday night (26th Nov) is in the Stacks Clubhouse. For the past number of weeks our hardworking Finance Committee have been asking us all to join our fellow Rockies for the social event of the year – The Austin Stacks Gala Race Night.

After nearly two years in hibernation, the great re-emergence of the Rockie faithful will take place in the clubhouse for what promises to be a wonderfully entertaining night of banter, betting and beverages!

Our 2021 Race Night is a hugely important fundraising event for Austin Stacks to help cover the costs of running the largest juvenile boys & girls Club in Kerry, to finance pitch maintenance & upgrade works, and to support our Senior Men’s team for what we hope will be a long and prosperous winter campaign!

The Race Night highlights include ten races on multiple screens, special auction and legend races, €1,500 in cash prizes to be won, full bar and finger food and best dressed lady and gent competitions.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 2-9; St. Brendans Board 1-12.

What an evening it was in Austin Stack Park in the first of this season’s Co. Championship semi finals.

After a very even first half, with both sides scoring three points each and having four wides each, it was level again at the end of normal time (1-6 to 0-9) and level at the end of extra time (2-9 to 1-12) to send the game to a penalty shoot-out.

Two years ago we won the Co. League Final after that game went to a penalty shoot-out (4-3). And on this occasion the same thing happened, winning this time by 5-3.

And on both occasions it was Kieran Donaghy himself who scored the winning goals – and this on his 62nd Co. Championship appearance.

Right up to the 54th minute there was only one man on the score-sheet for us and that was Darragh O’Brien with three each from play and frees. The sides were level on six points each at that stage.

Then, a minute later, Darragh’s free was touched into the net by Michael O’Donnell but then, with almost nine minutes of additional time being played Brendans added three good points to bring the game to extra time.

We looked to be on the road to victory when we led by four points at half time in extra time (2-8 to 0-10 – Seán Quilter with a goal and a point and Brendan O’Sullivan with a point. But St. Brendans reversed that in the 2nd half of e/t when they scored 1-2 to our solitary point from another Seán Quilter free.

The penalty shoot-out was brilliant with all our five being converted – Seán Quilter, Adam Curran, Michael O’Donnell, Michael O’Gara and Star himself with the last one. But you could say it was Wayne Guthrie’s brilliant save of Brendans’ first penalty that won the day for us.

Great credit to the players from both sides for what Marty Morrissey called an intriguing and pulsating game – a game which started at 5.30 and ended with the last penalty at 7.50pm.

Team:  Wayne Guthrie, Colin Griffin, Dylan Casey (Capt), Jack O’Shea, Paul O’Sullivan, Conor Jordan, Ronan Shanahan, Joseph O’Connor, Greg Horan, Michael O’Gara, Shane O’Callaghan, Fiachna Mangan, Brendan O’Sullivan (0-1), Kieran Donaghy, Darragh O’Brien (0-6 – 3 frees).

Good to see Niall Fitzmaurice making his Senior Co. Championship debut. Also let us hope that Ronan Shanahan recovers in time from the injury which sidelined him at half time.

Subs used: Armin Heinrich (ht), Michael O’Donnell (42m) (1-0), Seán Quilter (47m) (1-2 two frees), Barry Shanahan (53m), Adam Curran (54m). In extra time: Barry Walsh (65m), Niall Fitzmaurice (70m).

And what a final it’s going to be – with Rahillys overcoming Crokes in the second semi-final on Sunday. This will be the first time since 1936 that the Rock and Strand Rd. will meet in a Co. Final and we have to go back to 1963 to find two Town teams in a final – Mitchels and Rahillys on that occasion.

And finally on football what a performance David Mannix (scorer of two great points from play and a third from a free) and his team (St. Judes) gave in the Dublin Co. Final on Sunday, leading for most of the game, but being pipped at the post by Kilmacud who scored the winning point in the closing seconds of the game.

SUPPORTERS CLUB: Kevin O’Carroll and his colleagues in the Supporters Club would like to thank the lovely message received from our former SF Manager Stephen Stack (who was at the helm when we last won the Championship in 2014) congratulating the team for their win on Saturday night and wishing them every success in the final.

BEST WISHES: All in the Club send best wishes to Philip Healy, the outstanding C Team goalkeeper of the past, after his recent stint in hospital. Great to see Philip back on the road to recovery again.

FITNESS CLASSES: The Individual Pod Fitness Training sessions continues in the Clubhouse every Tuesday and Thursday evenings  from 7pm to 8pm. All are welcome. Contact Diane at 087 7940531 for further information.

NOVEMBER IN THE PAST (22/11 to 30/11). On the field of play two significant events took place in Hurling during this week in the past. The first was in 1967 (26th Nov) when our Minor Hurlers were officially denied a MH Championship when a refeering decision denied us an official win against Causeway. We have claimed that title since then. And the following year our Seniors were also denied a Championship when the late Christy McQuinn’s last minute seventy was waved wide to deny us a 1-6 to 1-5 win over Crotta. Read pages 128 and 135 of our Centenary Book for full reports on both games.

Off the pitch in 2006 (22nd Nov) Kieran Donaghy became the 7th Club Player to receive an All Star Award, following in the foot-steps of Johnno Keeffe, Ger Power, Denny Long, Ger O’Keeffe, Mikey Sheehy and Pa Laide who were the other six to receive the awards.

Also off the field of play in 2013 (29th Nov) Elma Nix became the second female member to be elected Senior Club Secretary in succession to Catherine Ryan who was the first female to hold the possession during the previous three seasons (2011-2013 incl).

Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club News

Senior County Championship Semi Final Result

Kerins O Rahillys  0-15

Dr Crokes 0-14

Kerins O’Rahillys overcame a six-point second-half deficit to secure a first Kerry SFC final appearance since 2008.

Rahillys’ remarkable second-half effort condemned Crokes to a second successive county semi-final defeat and, in the process, set up an all-Tralee county final against Austin Stacks the weekend after next.

When Dr Crokes’ Micheál Burns split the opposition posts 14 seconds after the restart, it left Kerins O’Rahillys 0-9 to 0-3 in arrears and facing yet another defeat at the semi-final stage of the county championship.

Róisín Murphy, Kerins O’ Rahilly supporter …what more need we say !

But in a stirring comeback effort, the men from Strand Road outscored Crokes by 0-12 to 0-5 from there to the finish.

Their revival began in earnest with four unanswered points in the 10 minutes from the 34th to the 44th minute, Barry John Keane, Jack Savage (two frees), and Conor Hayes on target to leave the scoreline reading 0-10 to 0-8.

Destiny, Anthony and Tyreek … great Kerins O’ Rahilly supporters

Rahillys’ comeback bid did suffer a setback on 40 minutes when corner-back Donagh Buckley received a straight red card for an off-the-ball incident involving Micheál Burns.

Crokes’ numerical advantage didn’t last long, mind, as Gavin O’Shea was sent to the sin bin on 43 minutes and he was followed to the line shortly after by Crokes defender David Naughton who, no more than Buckley before him, was given his marching orders for an incident away from the play.

This flurry of cards contributed to a tetchy second half where no player took a step backward in the physical exchanges.

Crokes goalkeeper Shane Murphy landed a difficult free to push their lead back out to three at the second water break (0-11 to 0-8), but it was to prove their sole score between the 33rd and 63rd minute of action.

Paddy, Taylor Stack and Samhain O’ Callaghan…Ross O’ Callaghan’s ( Kerins O’ Rahilly captain) top fans

Rahillys, with momentum behind them, delivered a burst of five unanswered points to move 0-13 to 0-11 in front on 61 minutes. The leveller was kicked by Conor Hayes on 57 minutes after a Crokes restart from replacement ‘keeper Adam Kelly went astray. Kelly was thrown into the action late on after injury forced Murphy off.   Two Jack Savage frees subsequently nudged William Harmon’s charges in front – the first time they had led all afternoon – as the large crowd braced themselves for eight minutes of second-half injury time.

A Tony Brosnan free cut the gap to the minimum, but no equaliser could Crokes find. Their second-half wastefulness, which included twice hitting the post from simple point attempts, will gnaw away at them for some time to come.

Crokes forward David Shaw had an opportunity to send the game to extra-time right at the death, but his free, which was from right on the sideline at the 20-metre line, went wide.

Kerins O’ Rahilly’s Ryan Nix catching up with Cormac Coffey for an updated photo

Crokes’ ability to find the target from play was the outstanding difference between the sides in the opening half, the Killarney men enjoying a significant 0-8 to 0-3 advantage at the break.

Rahillys, by contrast, were finding the going extremely tough in the opposition half of the field, the Strand Road outfit managing just one point from play across the opening half an hour.

William Harmon’s side had failed to raise a single flag come the first water break, with their account eventually opened on 18 minutes when Jack Savage converted a dead-ball effort following a foul on Tommy Walsh.

Up at the crack of dawn last Sunday morning were Vanessa ,Liam and Evan O’ Connor to support their Dad Johno ( Kerins O’ Rahilly Senior coach).

Savage’s two first-half frees sandwiched their one and only first-half point from play, supplied by Barry John Keane on 25 minutes.

Scores were found more easily and were far more frequent at the other end, Tony Brosnan’s class shining through during an opening half where he kicked three fine points from play. A fourth from the dead-ball situation meant he was responsible for half his team’s first-half total.

The ever-reliable Brian Looney was another to standout, throwing over as he did a pair of points.

Jacob O’ Connor, grandson of the great Walla O’ Connor …. helping decorate !

Crokes’ overall first-half supremacy and the amount of time they spent in the scoring zone is highlighted in the stat showing they had five wides tallied by the time Brosnan kicked their opener on 13 minutes.

They led 0-3 to 0-0 at the water break and added another three-in-a-row following their opponents’ opener to lead by five on 21 minutes. It was a lead they still enjoyed turning around for the second half.

That advantage went to six twice in the second period, but there followed a most dramatic second half and a most impressive Rahillys resurgence.

Before they head off to play the semifinal… Gaz and Jack Savage taking time out for a photo with their nephew Conor

Outside of the aforementioned mentioned scorer, the boys in blue had exceptional second half performances from Con Barrett, outstanding throughout, Gavin O Brien who’s surging runs created many scoring opportunities, while also curtailing the usually very influential Gavin White. Tommy Walsh and David Moran showed all their experience and leadership qualities when it was needed most.

We can now look forward to a county final on December 5th with great excitement.

Scorers for Kerins O’Rahillys: J Savage (0-8, 0-6 frees, 0-1 ‘45); BJ Keane, C Hayes (0-3 each); T Walsh (0-1).

Kerins O’Rahilly’s: S Foley; R O’Callaghan, C Coffey, D Buckley; D McElligott, S Brosnan, C Sayers; D Moran, C Barrett; G Savage, C Hayes, G O’Brien; J Savage, T Walsh, BJ Keane.

Subs: T Hoare for Sayers (6, inj); P Begley for G Savage (45).

‘ Man of the Match’ and so well deserved is Kerins O’ Rahilly’s Jack Savage

Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship Semi-Final: Result

Milltown/Castlemaine 1-07

Laune Rangers 1-11

Referee: Paul Hayes (Kerins O’Rahillys)

Milltown/Castlemaine welcomed near neighbours Laune Rangers to the Paddy Burke Memorial Park in Milltown on Saturday afternoon for the semi-final of the 2021 Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship.

In an ideal start for the home side, Cathal Moriarty raised a green flag after Jonathan O’Sullivan seen his effort rattle the crossbar in the same move. Laune Rangers settled and points from Fiachra Clifford, John Tyther and Shane Doona (2) had them trailing by the bare minimum at the half time interval at 1-2 to 0-4 with the two pointed efforts from the hosts coming from Cathal Moriarty and Kieran O’Carroll. There was also an opportunity for the lead to be extended approaching the interval when a penalty was awarded, however Jason Browne in the Laune Rangers goals saved and diverted the ball out for a ’45’ which proved to be a big moment in the contest as it kept the away side in the hunt at a stage where had it been converted, the difference would have been five points. Laune Rangers will have no doubt looked at their seven first half wides also and point to the fact that they could have led at the break.

Into the second half and it was the hosts who were quickest out of the blocks with three Jonathan O’Sullivan points seeing a four point gap open at 1-5 to 0-4. Laune Rangers showed their resillience however and dug in, landing 1-2 on the trot through a goal from John Tyther following a goal line scramble and points from Tyther and Kieran Doona seeing the visitors lead for the first time all afternoon after 40 minutes. Substitute Kieran McKenna did level the game soon after but a Fiachra Clifford free in response seen Laune Rangers lead 1-7 to 1-6 at the second half water break. Upon the resumption further points from Fiachra Clifford (free) and Gearóid Hassett opened up a three point gap at 1-9 to 1-6. Cillian Burke did try and steady the ship with a well taken score off his left side to cut the arrears but it was ultimately to no avail on the day as Laune Rangers kicked for home and rounded off victory with two injury time points from Gearóid Hassett and substitute Daire Cleary to leave four points the difference at the conclusion.

Cycle Raises Over Half A Million Euro For Munster Branches Of Down Syndrome Ireland

.
Cycling legend Sean Kelly pictured with Enda, Jill and their son Hugh O’Brien from Tralee at the official cheque presentation of the 21st annual Tour de Munster charity cycle on Saturday, 20th November. Photo: Diane Cusack

THE Tour de Munster raised a phenomenal €522,201 — its largest sum to date — for the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland.

The grand total was revealed at a cheque presentation on Saturday, November 20th with cycling legend and long term supporter of the Tour, Sean Kelly, presenting the cheque.

Since the tour began in 2001, over €3.9 Million has been raised for charity with over €3 million raised for the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland.

Continued below…

.

Funds raised as a result of Tour de Munster play a significant role across each Munster branch of Down Syndrome Ireland who provide a range of vital supports and services to children and adults with Down syndrome and their families.

In their quest to raise vital funds and awareness, this year’s Tour saw over 150 amateur cyclists make their way across the six counties of Munster, travelling over 600km from August 5th – 8th, supported by friends, family members and many volunteers along the way.

Sean Kelly, who celebrated his 16th Tour de Munster, once again led the 150 cyclists through the beautiful towns and villages of Cork, Waterford, Tipperary, Limerick, Clare and Kerry, covering an average of 150 km per day.

Paul Sheridan, who established Tour de Munster in 2001, was once again amazed by the magnificent support the Tour received again this year.

Speaking at the cheque presentation, Paul said; “I am so proud of everyone involved in this year’s Tour de Munster. We are over the moon to have raised such a phenomenal sum of €522,201 which will go a very long way in supporting the fantastic work carried out on a daily basis by the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland. None of this would have been possible without the huge dedication and efforts made by cyclists, volunteers and supporters. We are very grateful to the many companies and the public who have supported the Tour in the past 21 years, in particular this year’s main sponsors u-blox and UPS for their continued support.”

Enda O’Brien of Down Syndrome Kerry said, “Thanks to the continued support of Tour de Munster over the past twelve years, much-needed funds have been raised to continue to provide vital services and supports for our members with Down syndrome in Kerry. We are extremely grateful for every single person’s support, from the cyclists to the volunteers and the public. Special thanks also goes to the tour’s Kerry sponsors for their fantastic support. Congratulations and well done to everyone involved, the sum raised is astonishing and we can’t thank you enough for your hard work and dedication.”

Special thanks were also given to this year’s media partners – The Irish Examiner, Clare FM, Tipp FM, WLR FM, Red FM, SPIN South West and Pure Radio.

Race Night    Our Race Night took place on Friday last from the clubhouse and on Facebook Live and was a resounding success. It went off without a hitch due to the great work done by our hard working Race Committee.

Great credit has to go to chief organizer Terry McEneaney who was ably assisted by Cathy Carey, Donal Lucey and our magnificent sales team, who worked tirelessly over the last six weeks to bring you the race night.

Our technical team of Alan Cantwell, Denis Moriarty, Brian O’Shea and Ciara did a superb job in the production side of things and left no stone unturned to ensure that everything ran smoothly on the night.

Denis Sugrue did a great job as MC and chairperson Tim Lynch Jnr. was on hand to welcome everybody and later in the evening to interview Kerry senior manager Jack O’Connor and former Kerry captain Dara O Cinnéide.

The feature race of the night, the €1,000 Na Gaeil Gold Cup was won by club stalwart, Joe Clifford’s horse Oreo. Trainer was Noah Clifford and jockey was Aoileann Clifford. Best dressed lady was Cathy Carey and best dressed gent was Joe Hanley. Club chairperson, Tim Lynch Jnr. presented them with their prizes.

The support we received from our members and the wider community was phenomenal. We would like to thank everybody that purchased a horse. The parents of our under-age players gave us great support as did all of our club members, relatives and friends.

We extend a big thank you to the businesses in our community and further afield that sponsored races and included advertisements in our Race Program. We really appreciate your support at this time. All funds raised will go to toe running of the club at every level.

Senior Championship    Large crowds flocked to Austin Stack Park on Saturday evening for the eagerly awaited clash of St. Brendan’s and Austin Stacks in the Garvey’s Senior Football Championship semi final.

After a rather lackluster first half, the game came to life early in the 2nd period. St. Brendan’s were dealt a huge blow at the beginning of that half when the lost Diarmuid O’Connor with a hand injury.

Diarmuid O’Connor before the game on Saturday night. Photo: Dermot Crean

However they never dropped their heads and took the game to Stacks, playing some superb football. The conceded a goal late in the half to go 3 points in arrears but their never say die attitude saw them scoring 3 wonderful points to force extra time.

Stacks again scored a rather fortuitous goal in the 2nd period of extra time to go 4 points ahead and looked to be home and hosed.

But St. Brendan’s just wouldn’t go away and went a point ahead through an amazing goal by Ivan Parker nearing the end of extra time. Stacks forced a draw which brought the game the penalties with St. Brendan’s unfortunately losing out in the end.

But what a performance by St. Brendan’s. While they are bitterly disappointed they can hold your heads up high after giving it their all and leaving everything on the pitch. Well done to all the players and management on a great performance. They were just a bit unfortunate that lady luck deserted them on the night.

Speedy Recovery    We wish Diarmuid O’Connor, who sustained a nasty hand injury in the Senior County Championship semi final against Austin Stacks on Saturday night, a speedy recovery and hope he will be back to full health soon.

Freshers League    It was great to see two Na Gaeil stars Enda O’Connor and Tomás O hAiniféin captaining CIT and UCC in their Freshers League clash recently. It was a nice moment when both players headed to the middle of the field for the toss. Na Gaeil’s Jack Bourke was also on the UCC team and played well by all accounts.

Na Gaeilgoers    It’s Back! Na Gaeilgoers walking / running group is back every Monday and Thursday evening at 7.30pm sharp.

Start your fitness journey by walking or running 5km while also getting fresh air and meeting new people. High vis jackets a must. Route will be around Tralee town and will be explained on the night.

Children welcome but must be accompanied by an adult throughout the route. Please arrive at Na Gaeil and have parked by 7.25pm. Respect social distancing. This event will go ahead unless there is a weather warning. So please come along and join us.

AGM    Our club AGM which was scheduled to take place on Friday December 3rd has been postponed due to our senior team’s involvement in the Intermediate Final which may take place that weekend.  It will now be re-scheduled  at a later date which will be confirmed in due course.

Bingo    Na Gaeil Bingo Committee is delighted to announce the return of our popular bingo every Monday night at Na Gaeil Clubhouse, at the earlier starting time of 8pm. We have Split the Bucket on the night also. Masks have to be worn entering and attending Bingo and proof of Covid Vaccine has to be shown to committee members. Kerry GAA Announce Down Syndrome Kerry As New Charity Partner

.
Members of Down Syndrome Kerry with Kerry’s David Moran, Paul Murphy and Ogie Moran at the launch of the Charity Partnership Launch at Austin Stack Park on Saturday night.

KERRY GAA and Down Syndrome Kerry have unveiled a new charity partnership which will see Kerry GAA donate a percentage of proceeds from ticket sales for the Win A House in Killarney draw to the Kerry charity.

On Saturday night, a small number of children were invited to the outdoor event at Austin Stack Park where they got to meet Kerry footballers David Moran and Paul Murphy as well as Kerry hurlers Mikey Boyle and Killian Trant, who took time for a quick kick and puck around under lights.

Speaking on behalf of Down Syndrome Kerry (DSK), Maurice Horan chairperson of DSK said he was delighted that they were chosen as Kerry GAA’s new charity partner and said it was a natural partnership.

Continued below…

.

“We are delighted to be involved. It is a great boast for our association. It will be able to help so many serves that we provide, and we need funds to do that. Kerry GAA have very generously asked us to be involved,” he said.

Down Syndrome Kerry is a parent led voluntary organisation with a membership base of over 230 families spread throughout County Kerry and into parts of Cork and Limerick.

The money raised will help provide speech therapy, occupational therapy as well as social and educational activities for its members.

One such family that are extremely grateful of the services is the Trant family. Kerry hurler Killian Trant is first to admit that the biggest Kerry fan in the house is his sister Grainne with Down Syndrome.

“My sister Grainne is 12 years of age and is inside in school in Tralee and it’s a cause that definitely hits close to home. It is nice to see the county board recognising Down Syndrome Kerry as the funds raised will be of a huge benefit for them to continue to provide the great services that they provide to both Down Syndrome and the additional support to their families.”

Chairperson of the Win a House fundraising campaign, Pat O’Sullivan, said It was very important that the GAA in Kerry gives something back to the community.

“We are delighted to have Down syndrome Kerry on board and hopefully we can help them with additional funds that are vital for them to help provide their serves to over 230 families throughout Kerry. Many of our members in the GAA has somebody with Down syndrome within their families and it’s great that we can recognise them too as the great supporters to Kerry that they are.”

You can still enter the Win a House in Killarney draw for Kerry GAA by visiting the www.winahousewithkerrygaa.ie, by asking your local club, or call into the Kerry GAA Store. The draw will take place for the brand new three-bedroom house in Killarney in April 2022.

Tickets are available at €100 each and feature a wide range of bonus draws and any tickets bought will also see you supporting Down Syndrome Kerry.

PHOTOS/REPORT: Warriors Take Templeogue To Task To Remain Unbeaten At Home

Alan Cantwell reports on Garveys Tralee Warriors win in the InsureMyVan.ie Men’s Super League 2021/2022 – Round 6 game at Tralee Sports Complex on Saturday…

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 99

Griffith College Templeogue 90

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors produced a performance of real quality, determination and resolve as they saw off the challenge of Griffith College Templeogue in convincing fashion on Saturday night.

The Warriors led throughout and a hugely impressive third quarter, in which they outscored the visitors by 25-12, moved the Warriors into position to see out the win by 99-90 in the end.

The Warriors intent was clear from the very start as Daniel Jokubaitis opened the scoring with a three-point effort but Lorcan Murphy, Neil Randolph and Jason Killeen were also in range early for Templeogue.

Continued below…

.

A hat trick of threes for the Warriors through Fergal O’Sullivan, Keelan Crowe and Aaron Calixte saw the home side lead by 14-10 midway through the quarter.

Threes from Marquel Murphy and Vlad Tokishin saw Templeogue take back the lead before Calixte and Quigley and a buzzer beater out of the top drawer from Brandon Cotton saw the Warriors lead by 25-22 at quarter time.

Kris Arcilla and Callum McGrail combined to wrestle the lead back for Templeogue early in the second quarter but major scores from Jokubaitis and Darragh O’Hanlon and a pair of quality scores from Eoin Quigley edged the home side back in front.

Continued below…

.
Daniel Jokubaitis unstoppable. Photo: Liam Ryan

Mark Keenan introduced Enrique Melllini and the Spaniard impressed with four successive score to draw his side level.

Calixte and Quigley exchanged scores with Killeen before Neil Randolph arced in his first three of the night but the Warriors asserted late on and with Jokubaitis hitting his third three and Keelan Crowe’s firing in his second three of the night the Warriors 54-48 ahead at the long break.

The Warriors moved up a gear in the third and piled the pressure on their League arch-rivals with a devastating defensive and offensive display.

Jokubaitis and Quigley in particular, tormented the Templeogue defence, and along with scores from Calixte and Roso the home side were suddenly leading by double figures.

Eoin Quigley takes off to score for Warriors. Photo: Liam Ryan

The Warriors shut down the Templeogue attack with scores from Arcilla and Murphy providing only token resistance.

At the other end baskets from O’Hanlon, Crowe and a three late on by James Fernane had the Warriors 79-60 up at the end of the third.

Templeogue got to work early in the fourth in their attempt to turn the contest around with scores from Lorcan Murphy, Mellini and Puff Summers but threes from Quigley and captain Fergal O’Sullivan kept the visitors at arm’s length.

With no sign of a dramatic comeback the game meandered its way to the inevitable conclusion with Calixte turning on the style with quality scores from either side of the arc.

Lorcan Murphy did provide an entertaining cameo late on with his typical acrobatics, but it served simply to add some respectability to the final scoreline as the Warriors sealed an impressive 99-90 win in the end.

Aaron Calixte shoots another score for the Warriors. Photo: Liam Ryan

Top scorers: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors: Aaron Calixte 21, Daniel Jokubaitis 17, Eoin Quigley 16

Griffith College Templeogue: Lorcan Murphy 26, Enrique Mellini 23, Jason Killeen 16

• The Super League takes a break for the Irish international next weekend but the following weekend Garvey’s Tralee Warriors will attempt to make their way to the Cup semi-final for the third season in a row when they host Moycullen at the Tralee Sport Complex on Saturday 4th December with tip off at 7.30pm.

Bookies Make Austin Stacks Odds-On To Win County Title

.
Tommy Walsh in action yesterday. Photo by Dermot Crean

THE bookies were obviously not impressed with Kerins O’Rahillys comeback yesterday as they make Austin Stacks odds-on to win the county final in two weeks.

Stacks won Saturday’s semi-final against St Brendans after a penalty shootout, while the Strand Road men overcame Dr Crokes in the sunshine of Austin Stack Park on Sunday.

BoyleSports have cut Stacks into the 8/13 favourites from 6/4 to claim the title, with plenty of support arriving for them. Paddy Power have the Rockies at 8/11 with Strand Road evens.

Kerins are now 6/5 underdogs with their odds trimmed from 4/1. Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “2006 All Star Player of the Year Kieran Donaghy played a crucial role in Austin Stacks’ Kerry semi-final win to see them face Kerins O’Rahillys in the final. Austin Stacks are now the 8/13 favourites from 6/4 while their rivals are not without support either at 6/5 from 4/1. It should be a great battle with both sides from Tralee.”

No time or venue has been confirmed for the final as yet, but it’s expected it will be an afternoon throw-in on Sunday, December 5 in Austin Stack Park. Better get those tickets as soon as they become available though, as demand with be high.

KERRY Mental Health Association has a solution to help home bakers cope with one of the most stressful aspects associated with preparing for the Festive Season – the Christmas Cake!

The General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association, John Drummey, said: “The theme of the Christmas Cake, as you’ll see from the icing on the cake, is based on our continuing promotion of the 5 Ways To Wellbeing – Connect | Be Active | Take Notice | Keep Learning | Give.

“The video demonstrates how easy it can be to bake a cake for family and friends to enjoy over Christmas. We hope that some people will go to the fundraising page to donate and guess the weight to have an opportunity to taste how good Oliver’s cake is!”

Oliver Hurley, an award-winning theatre director and owner of the Oliver Hurley School of Musical Theatre, turned to baking during the lockdown as a means of looking after his mental health.

Oliver developed Olly’s Delights and has baked hundreds of cakes over the past few months: “People panic when they think about baking at home and they think it’s going to take too much time. It actually doesn’t and the secret is to have everything ready before your start. Have everything laid out – ingredients and utensils – and the mixture will be ready to go into the oven after 15 minutes. The key is preparation because it takes the stress out of baking the Christmas cake two or three weeks out giving you time to concentrate on the shopping!”

Watch Oliver’s Christmas Cake Demonstration video on the Kerry Mental Health Association YouTube Channel while the fundraising campaign to donate and guess the weight of the cake runs until Tuesday, December 21. https://fb.watch/9rcNFpuK1X/

All proceeds raised will go towards supporting the befriending and other mental health promotional activities undertaken by Kerry Mental Health Association.

The video was recorded and edited by Finbarr O’Donovan, a Final Year student of TV, Radio and New Media at Munster Technological University in Tralee.

Kerins O’Rahillys 0-15

Dr Crokes 0-14

WHAT can you say about yesterday?

After a diabolical first half from Kerins O’Rahillys, they turned it around in spectacular fashion to beat a highly fancied Dr Crokes side to claim a place in the Kerry SFC final against Austin Stacks in two weeks time.

It’ll be the first final pairing between the side since 1936, when the Rockies beat the Naries by 0-6 to 0-4.

It looked ominous for the blues early on as the Killarney men went three ahead after 15 minutes and despite Strand Road getting a few points on the board, they trailed 0-8 to 0-3 at the break and looked in disarray.

Things looked even worse soon after the restart when Crokes increased their lead to six, but change was a-coming.

Rahillys clawed their way back with points by Conor Hayes and Jack Savage but were dealt a further setback when Donagh Buckley received a straight red for striking an opponent.

However, soon after the numbers were levelled up with Dr Crokes David Naughton dismissed and this proved a catalyst for a Strand Road recovery.

An injury to Dr Crokes goalkeeper, after a collision with Con Barrett, was also a big loss to the Killarney side, with a number of turnovers shortly after kickouts resulting  in Blues scores.

By the 60th minute, Strand Road were level at 0-11 each and the atmosphere was at fever pitch in the stands and on the terraces.

Strand Road went two points ahead thanks to Jack Savage frees, but Dr Crokes showed their resilience and came back with a point. When Rahillys again restored their two point lead, Crokes again hit back with a point.

The Killarney side had a chance to equalise at the death, but David Shaw’s effort from an acute angle failed to hit the target and that was that.

The celebrations at the final whistle felt like a county final win for Kerins O’Rahillys, but it’s been 13 years since the Blues were in this position so you can forgive their enthusiasm.

There’s much more work to do in the weeks ahead if they want to beat the Rockies who will relish the challenge! Scroll down for photos…
