Austin Stacks GAA Juvenile Club News

.

AUSTIN STACK CLUB ALL-STARS: On Sunday last, our Austin Stack Club All-Stars togged out in the glorious sunshine. Everyone was in good spirits. The children had great fun improving their football skills as well as taking part in social games and having fun with bubbles in the chill out zone. Kean Fitzgerald showed great skill in handpassing this week and Julian Carmody loved the fun and games with the parachute. The Austin Stack Club All-Stars is an inclusive initiative being undertaken by the club and is open to any child with a diagnosis. It’s a safe space for children to engage in social games and to learn some basic football skills; and it allows kids to be themselves while having fun with their peers. We are always open to new members. All are welcome! Fáilte roimh chách! Massive thanks to the club members and parents who give their time to lend a hand week after week. The atmosphere and energy is always electric. We look forward to seeing everyone again on Sunday next at 10am at the Austin Stack Club pitch in Connolly Park. Newmembers always welcome! Round 2: Team Amber’s first game in Phase 2 of the County League ended in defeat against Laune Rangers in Connolly Park on Sunday evening last (29th). Team Amber (AdeS): 1-5; Laune Rangers B: 3-6. The boys from the Laune took full advantage of their match sharpness from their previous weekend and led 2-6 to 0-1 at half-time, Team Amber’s solitary 1st half score came from the boot of Ryan McCord. All credit must go to The Rock boys for their 2nd half response in upping their game straight from the throw-in and in putting up a battling performance. An early Jack Delaney goal along with points from Nathan O’Connor and Kyle Yoxall had Team Amber right back in the game and, with our boys winning their individual duels in all areas of the pitch, a memorable comeback was on the cards. Indeed, a little bit of luck in front of goal might have swung the result in our boys’ way. Mar a tharla, it was Laune Rangers’ only score of the 2nd half, a goal in the dying minutes, that finally settled the result. All our brave boys will greatly benefit from this first competitive outing in nearly a month and they’ll be much more prepared and ready for the games ahead. Man-of-the-Match: Gearóid Corcoran who performed fantastically at wing forward. Thanks to Laune Rangers for a hard-fought and fair contest. Thanks to the referee for his handling of the game. Team Amber: Alex Darfoor, Alex O’Flaherty, Oisín Cotter, Joe O’Halloran, Conor Murphy, David Ahern, Nathan O’Connor, Oran O’Donoghue, Jack Delaney, Ryan McCord, Nathan Hurley, Gearóid Corcoran, Kyle Yoxall, Luke O’Connor, Ewan Canty, Tadhg Somers, Jayden O’Dowd.

Final: 26th June at 6pm. Teams in our division that we could possibly meet in the semi-final: Keel/Listry, Firies, Na Mistéalaigh, Na Gaeil. Exciting times ahead! (Buíochas le Pa a chuir peann le pár).

PEIL FAOI 15: We played our County League Division 1 Final against Kenmare Shamrocks on Thursday evening, May 26th, in Doirín (Killarney Legion Club). After a slow start, during which our opponents had a couple of unsuccessful attempts on goal, our boys gradually took control of this first half by playing some wonderful football. High fielding, accurate foot passing and constant support play were the hallmarks of this first class display of Gaelic football. First half goals from Naode Derege, Cormac Bastible, Ronan Carroll and 3 from hat-trick hero, Ryan O’Driscoll, helped to give us a commanding half-time lead….6-8 to 1-2. Our boys continued their good form into the second half. Despite being well behind, our brave opponents, Kenmare Shamrocks, never gave up and kept fighting for their cause to the end. Kenmare scored 0-10 in the second half….a great score….0-4 from play. However, another goal from Ronan Carroll and 5 more points from our forwards sealed our victory on a score of 7-13 to 1-13. Olivier Lata was excellent in goals throughout the entire game; he made excellent saves and his pinpoint kick outs were ‘spot-on’! Our full-back line, Bao Foley, Max Maszorek and Tomás O’Connell, was a stone wall of solid defenders, as solid as the Aswan Dam; they gave no quarter to their opponents. Our halfback line of Liam O’Connell, Fionnán Ryan and Rian Walsh, was outstanding, cutting off Kenmare attacks with several turnovers and setting up many successful counter-attacks. Ronan Carroll gave a master class of midfield play; his powerhouse display ensured that he finished as joint top scorer. His midfield partner, Gavin Ó Cathasaigh was outstanding and gave a tireless display of high fielding, precision foot passing and brilliant support play and he capped off his polished performance le cúilín gleoite ón imirt. Our half-forward line of Alex Tuohy, Cormac Bastible and Naode Derege dominated their opponents all evening. They won several Neidín kick outs, putting our opponents under severe pressure and greatly contributing to our victory. Our corner forwards, Leon Ó Conchúir and Rory Ó Loingsigh, with their persistent attacks, posed a big threat to Kenmare all evening. Special mention must be made of Ryan O’Driscoll who terrorised the Kenmare full-back line throughout the match. He scored 3-3 from play and was unmarkable, as several Kenmare defenders discovered to their cost. All our substitutes, Aodhán Horgan, Gabriel Nosidlak, Paddy Lucid, Jack Diggin and Jake Carmody, contributed hugely in the second half and ensured our victory. Co-captains, Cormac Bastible and Fionnán Ryan, accepted the winners’ trophy on behalf of their team and spoke graciously. Thanks to the referee and his officials for their performance and to Killarney Legion for their hospitality. Commiserations to our opponents, Kenmare Shamrocks, on a brave but unsuccessful display ar an oíche. Squad na Carraige: Olivier Lata, Bao Foley, Max Maszorek, Tomás O Connell, Liam O Connell, Fionnán Ryan, Rian Walsh, Ronan Carroll (2-6), Gavin Ó Cathasaigh (0-1), Naode Derege (1-0), Cormac Bastible (1-1), Alex Touhy, Leon O’Connor, Ryan O’Driscoll (3-3), Rory Lynch (0-2), Aodhán Horgan, Gabriel Maszorek, Jack Diggin, Jake Carmody, Paddy Lucid, Ben Murphy (injured). GAELCHOLÁISTE: An oíche mhór drámaíochta fé lán seoil…! Halla Ghaelscoil Mhic Easmainn was packed to capacity with over 188 eager audience members prepared to enjoy the acting extravaganza of ‘Till Death Do Us Part.’ For over 8 weeks, rumours of this drama’s impeccable quality had spread through the humble households of Tralee as daltaí na hIdirbhliana rehearsed endlessly. As the evening commenced 32 tense students took their positions both in front of and behind the curtain awaiting their various queues from their director. The taispeántas began and proceeded without a hitch. D’inis na haisteoirí scéal bainise a thit as a chéile de bharr sainte, doichill agus cónra a tháinig isteach sa séipéal trí thimpiste! Rockies took centre stage with the cast featuring Luke Ó Cathasaigh as Batty, the ‘rootin-rootin’ American uncle of the groom and Lúcás Mac Gearailt as the hapless altar boy, Johnny. The performance was top-notch; the audience could barely catch a breath between fits of laughter as the wedding continued to descend into chaos. It was, in aigne an tuairisceora seo, a wonderful conclusion to an engrossing Transition Year dos na daltaí paiseanta seo! (Buíochas le Daithí a chuir peann le pár).

A SMALLER band of Tralee Rowing Club members than usual travelled to the Dublin Metropolitan Regatta on Blessington Lake in Co. Wicklow last weekend.

It is a 2km regatta and part of the Grand League series.  It was a busy day as all crews from the club won places in finals.

Sean Morris came 1st  in the MJ16 1x, winning a medal.  Sean Morris and Conall MacThreinfir came first in the B final  of the Mens Division 2 2x earning them 2nd place in the MJ162x.

Rosie Giles came 1st  in the C final of the Womens Division 2 1x. Rosie Giles and Sadhbh Cadogan came  3rd in the B final of the Womens Division 2 2x.

Paula Moloney came 5th in the B final of the Womens Division 2 1x. Niamh Greaney and Paula Moloney came 1st in the B Final of the Womens Division 2 2x.

Heidi Giles, Rosie Giles, James Morris, Sean Morris, Connall Theinfhir and Paula Moloney at Blessington Lake at the weekend.

James Morris raced in a composite masters 8+ with members of Galway, Muckross, and Shandon Rowing clubs.

Sadhbh Cadogan chose a big stage to race in a 1x for the first time and in her heat and final gave performances to be proud of.

“The last time Tralee Rowing Club attended this regatta in 2019 they travelled with just two junior single scullers, it is testament to the progress of the club that we now have such a big number of crews seriously competing,” said Club PRO, Jane Boyle.

“The committee and coaching team would like to congratulate all participants and thank all those who supported our athletes in getting to Blessington,” added Jane.

Billy Ryle: Last Minute Advice For State Exam Students

.

You’ve done the hard work so ‘play a blinder’ in the 2022 State Exams says Guidance Counsellor Billy Ryle who has some last minute advice for candidates…

The waiting is almost over for about 120,000 Leaving Cert and Junior Cycle students as the exams get under way on Wednesday, June 8.

The Leaving Cert exam returns to the traditional format after two years of calculated and accredited grades.

However, candidates will have additional choice and fewer questions to compensate for Covid-related disruption to the school year.

Minister Norma Foley has said the overall marks this year will be no lower than last year’s record-breaking set of results.

This will be achieved by allowing the State Examinations Commission (SEC) to apply a ‘post-marking intervention’, which will lift all students’ marks, if necessary.

Continued below…

.

There will also be a copious supply of CAO, Further Education, Apprenticeships, Traineeships and Employment places available for school leavers in a buoyant economy. So, it’s all good news for candidates lining up for the Leaving Cert exam.

The Junior Cycle exam also takes place for the first time since 2019. The Leaving Certificate exams, the Junior Cycle exams and the Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) exams will run until Tuesday, 28th June, Monday, 20th June and Thursday, 16th June, respectively.

Final Weekend

This is the final weekend for major revision. Stick to your study plan on Saturday and Sunday. Concentrate on subjects being examined during the first week.

As the exams run into the subsequent weeks, the optional subjects are nicely spaced out allowing for study days.

Prioritise

Leaving Cert candidates should prioritise last minute work in English, Home Economics, Engineering, Geography and Mathematics Paper One and get it done by Sunday night.

Likewise Junior Cert candidates should do the same in English, Religious Education, Irish, History, Geography and Maths. On Monday, concentrate on the tips and predictions for subjects being examined the first week. Don’t cram on the days before the exam as this may cause confusion and fatigue.

.

Alertness

Spent an hour or two on Tuesday skimming over your notes for Wednesday’s exams and leave it at that.

Some relaxed leisure will be more beneficial than spending the day cramming material that you may not recall anyway.

You need a clear and alert mind going into the exams on Wednesday morning and for the duration of the exam period.

Notes

On the evening before each exam subject spend an hour or so looking over your notes so that the important concepts and ideas are fresh in your mind.

Heavy study sessions on the night prior to any paper are not a good idea as you will be exhausted the following morning.

Instead, relax and get a good night’s rest. Put all thoughts of the following day’s exam out of your mind. If you find it difficult to sleep, try a little non-academic reading for a short while.

Personal Materials

Over the next few days check your equipment and assemble your exam materials – black or blue biros, pencils, ruler, eraser, drawing instruments, calculator and so on.

Have at least two biros or fountain pens in case one doesn’t work properly. It’s time, too, to organise your personal needs such as a watch and tissues.

.

Relaxation

A few nerves are normal on the first day so be prepared to deal with it. A relaxation exercise or maybe a shower to freshen up will do the trick.

Eat a nutritious breakfast as you’ll need the extra reserves of energy. Finally, go through your equipment checklist before leaving home.

Pre-Exam Mode

On Wednesday morning arrive at the exam centre at least a half hour before the exam begins. For all subsequent exams be present about fifteen minutes before the appointed time.

Spend the few minutes before entering the exam centre on your own in peace and quiet. At all costs, avoid groups that are involved in last minute revision. If you need to, use the bathroom before you enter the exam centre.

Be in your seat a few moments before the exam is due to begin. Synchronise your watch with the clock on the wall and use your watch or the clock to help you pace your work.

Exam Centre Check

Check your seat and desk for firmness and stability. A shaky desk will torment you and distract you during the exam.

When the answer book is distributed, fill in the required details and read the directions.

When you receive your question paper read the instructions carefully in case there is any change of format. Don’t be put off by your first glance at the paper. It’s new and it will look unfamiliar at first.

Once the exam begins, keep to your prepared answering plan and address the questions which are asked.

Post-Mortem

If you finish a paper before the time is up, do not leave the exam centre. Recheck your work and extra information may come to you.

Attempt an extra question only when you have thoroughly answered the previous questions. Once an exam is over, spend as little time as possible on a post-mortem. Focus on the next paper and stay in exam mode until you finish your final subject. Remember the Leaving Cert is a marathon rather than a sprint.

When the entire exam is over, forget about it and enjoy your summer. There is no advantage in dwelling on what might have been. Be happy and satisfied that you have done your best.

Exam Results

Leaving Cert results may be issued later than normal this year as the SEC is holding a second set of exams in July for certain categories of students, such as those who experience a close family bereavement, Covid-19 illness and certain other categories of serious illness.

A date for the release of the 2022 Leaving Cert results is likely to be announced shortly. CAO round one offers for college applicants are normally released a few days after the exam results are issued. Good luck to all candidates starting exams next week.

Checklist

• Concentrate on subjects being examined in the first week

Crowds Enjoy Sunshine At Naming Of New Lifeboat In Fenit

.

CROWDS came out in the sunshine to see Fenit RNLI’s new inshore lifeboat officially named ‘Lizzie’ last Sunday.

The new lifeboat is being named after Liz Fraser, a Southwark born actor, well-known for roles on stage and screen over a career spanning decades.

The honour of the lifeboat naming was given to Jan Bolt, the station’s administration officer and wife to the late station mechanic Bob Bolt.

.

Guests on the day included the RNLI’s new Head of Region for Lifesaving, Anna Classon, in her first visit to the Kerry lifeboat station and RNLI Trustee and Council chairperson Dr. John Killeen, who accepted the lifeboat on behalf of the RNLI and presented it to the station.

The ceremony included a Service of Dedication which was presided over by Fr. Francis Nolan and Rvd. Jim Stephens. Musical accompaniment was provided by The Tralee Pipe Band, Oidreacht, managed by Michelle O’Sullivan, Fenit School Choir and Dave Buckley who performed the Lifeboat Anthem ‘Home from the Sea’ to close the ceremony.

The Chairman of the Lifeboat Manager Group and station Medical Advisor Tom McCormack was MC for the ceremony and opened the proceeding paying tribute to the donor and all fundraisers who support the work of the RNLI.

RNLI Trustee and Chairperson of the Irish Council Dr. John Killeen acknowledged the incredible gift by Ms. Frazer. “Being charitable was part of her nature. The legacy that she has left behind and which is here today, will go to sea to save lives for many years to come.”

Dr. Killeen also spoke of the work of the men and women who volunteer for Fenit RNLI: “When we talk about lifesaving in the RNLI, there are two parts to it. One is the lifeboat, and the other is the volunteers. There is a fantastic history of lifesaving here in Fenit. We value and appreciate the work being done on behalf of the community.”

In accepting the lifeboat into the care of the station, Fenit RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager Gerard O’Donnell, said: “This is a great and proud day for us. We are very sad to say farewell to our past lifeboat, the Sonya and Bradley, which served us well for the past 12 years and we look forward to writing a new era in the history of Fenit lifeboat station with this new lifeboat which has been gifted to us.

“This boat along with the All-Weather lifeboat which we already have, helps provide a great service here to the Tralee Bay and extended areas.”

Following the naming of the lifeboat, the Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 115 carried out a training exercise with the new D-class lifeboat, to the delight of the watching crowds.

Lifeguards Begin Duty On Kerry’s Blue Flag Beaches This Weekend

.
Banna beach.

LIFEGUARDS will be on duty on all Blue Flag Beaches in Kerry at weekends commencing from this Bank Holiday Weekend, increasing to seven days per week on all of those beaches from the beginning of July.

Beachgoers are reminded that lifeguards are only on duty during specific times which are advised locally on each Blue Flag beach and that lifeguards cover only designated patrolled areas which are indicated by the presence of lifeguard flags.

The 41 lifeguards, who are fully trained, will be on duty on Kerry beaches over the summer. Kerry County Council is reminding all beachgoers and those swimming and bathing at the county’s beaches this summer to act responsibly and safely in the water at all times.

THE helmet that Paul Nagle used during the 2021 World Rally Championship winning season was sold for a staggering €25,000 at a charity auction in Tralee on Saturday night.

The auction was part of the Déjà Vu celebration of Kerry motorsport that took place over the weekend.  Cancer charity Recovery Haven is set to be the main beneficiary of the fundraising effort.

Kerry Motor Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and the Déjà Vu road run was the flagship event in the year-long celebration.

Rally stars like current World Rally Championship contender Craig Breen and five-time WRC event winner Kris Meeke participated in a tour of famous West Kerry rally stages on Saturday with the cars leaving from The Mall in town on Saturday morning.

Other famous drivers in the 150-strong entry list included multiple Irish champion Austin MacHale and former European Rally Champion Patrick Snijers from Belgium.

After the road run, 300 people attended a gala dinner at the event’s headquarters, The Rose Hotel.

During the dinner, items were auctioned off. Items included paintings of famous rally drivers, motorsport trips to museums and, of course, the helmet which was signed by almost every top name associated with the World Rally Championship over the last 20 years.

Nearly €40,000 was raised during the auction with the majority of that sum going to Recovery Haven. Nagle will donate a portion of the helmet sale to his home football club, Fossa GAA too.

The helmet was sold to New York-based Irish rally driver Paul Rowley.  An additional €3,500 was raised by individual donations and bucket collections along the route.

“I don’t have the words, we are humbled that we were the chosen charity for this spectacular and fun event,” Recovery Haven’s PR and Marketing manager Marisa Reidy said.

“We met so many wonderful people from the world of rally and they were so generous and kind. Huge thanks too to Kerry Motor Club and the work they did to bring this event to Tralee.”  Scroll down for photos…

PHOTOS: Fantastic Turnout For Spa NS Donal Walsh 6k Challenge

.

THE positive ‘live life’ message was very much to the fore in the Spa last Sunday as the annual Donal Walsh Spa 6k Challenge was held at Spa National School.

The largest crowd ever turned out in the splendid sunshine to enjoy the wide variety of entertainment and activities provided on the day, organised to commemorate Donal, the school’s past pupil and his ‘live life’ message.

It had not been possible to host the event in the last two years with covid restrictions, but it was back and better than ever last weekend.

Continued below…

.

“This is a very special day as it reminds us all of the importance of Donal’s ‘live life’ message especially in the busy world of today”, said school principal Peter Linehan.

“Huge credit must go to our fantastic organising committee who worked so hard to have everything ready and ensured that everything ran so smoothly on the day.”

And it certainly was an action-packed day with a truly electric atmosphere. The Parents Association organised a beautiful food court on site with a variety of treats for everyone to enjoy.

Some students also hosted a fabulous mini market with arts and crafts and other goodies for sale, whilst the 6th class students hosted fun games and challenges for the younger students.

Other students participated in a thrilling rocket competition in the nearby football field. There was live music, face painting, street performers and a tremendous show by the excellent Fanzini brothers to finish the day.

However, the highlight of the day was the 6km walk and run starting and finishing at the school. Donal’s mother Elma was on hand to start the race again this year.

Tralee runner, Derek Griffin was home first in the men’s race with school student Billy Naughton coming second and David Chute coming a close third.

Local triathlete, Ciara Tierney won the ladies run. Gillian Sugrue came home second and Spa student Evie O’Sullivan finished in third place.

Then followed the long stream of runners and walkers who pushed themselves to complete the course in their own personal best times. All finished in high spirits and received loud rounds of applause from the local support.

“We are delighted to be able to revisit Spa N.S., a place where Donal had so many memories” said Elma, Donal’s mother. “It’s lovely to see people coming together and enjoying each other’s company. A special day and Donal would have loved it!” Scroll down for photos…

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Dr. Crokes 1-11; Austin Stacks 2-10.

With the home side on second spot on the League table and ourselves in third position going into this postponed round 6 game of the Co. League at Lewis Road on a sunny, summers Friday evening (27th May) it was bound to be a well contested affair, and so it turned out to be. The sides were level at half time (1-6 each) and in the second half both sides had five scores each, the difference being all Crokes scores were points while one of our five scores was a Seán Quilter goal in the 42nd minute.

All our eighteen players played brilliantly with our defenders keeping an always dangerous Crokes forward line under control.

Gearóid Fitzgerlad opened the scoring inside the second minute and then the lead changed hands on seven different occasions before the break. Apart from Cian Purcell who put over a long-distant point in the 15th minute all our other scores came from Seán Quilter. Three of his four points came from play with his goal coming from a well-taken 25th minute penalty.

Seán was again our chief scorer in the second half scoring 1-2 of our 1-4 scores – our other two points coming from Gearóid Fitzgerald and a well-taken Conor Horan free. Sean, of course, was the Celsius Mensware Man of the Match.

Team: Wayne Guthrie, Barry Walsh, Barry Shanahan, Joey Nagle, Adam Curran, Luke Chester, Niall Fitzmaurice, Ronan Shanahan, Greg Horan, Gearóid Sheehan, Fiachna Mangan (Capt),Conor Horan (0-1 free),  Seán Quilter (2-6 – one penalty goal; two frees), Gearóid Fitzgerald (0-2), Cian Purcell (0-1).

Subs used: Jordan Kissane (42m), Dara Barry Walsh (44m), John Carmody (58m).

Behind the scenes our Lidl’s ‘One Good Club’ committee are working hard to embrace this wonderful programme to bring fun and positivity to our club members and community of all ages.
The five step programme was developed using the ‘ 5 a day for your Mental Health,’ a framework made up of simple actions aimed at boosting your mental health and well-being.

Last Thursday we held a bake sale. Our U12s baked and donated a whopping €200 to Animal Help Kerry. Wendy O’ Connor was overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness of our young ladies and also watched their game v Corca Dhuibhne.

On bank holiday Monday we will have a Family Fun Day for our club and community, check out our social media for more details during the week.

KERINS O’ RAHILLY TEAM
This game was always going to be a tight affair we thought…we were the first to put the ball over the bar and played very well in the first half.
Corca Dhuibhne started the second half as they intended to finish …winners. We pressed their defence but were  tired as many of our girls had played the night before and have had a lot of football at school also.
Unfortunately it was the team from back West who proved stronger in the finish.
Final score:
Kerins O’ Rahilly 4-02
Corca Dhuibhne 5-03
It was great to see so many supporters as always at the game.

In round 4 we are away to Churchill . Throw in will be at 6.30p.m. in the Spa pitch on Wednesday, June 1st.

Juvenile Notes:
Our academy continued last Sunday with the sun shining high in the sky and smiles of the pitches shining even brighter. Most age groups trained as normal kicking off at 10am in Ballyrickard while the others had games in different locations.

U5s, U6s and U7s enjoyed their training sessions  having great fun with their coaches and developing their skills along the way.  Every player showed how much they have learned over the past few months from their fantastic coaches and enjoyed their session.

U8 Girls:
Our U8 Girls had their first Go Games against Stacks in Connolly park last Sunday morning. They had A very competitive match against Stacks. All the hard work on their skills at training was on display and they were very impressive. Every girl got to play and show their skills to all those who were watching. Everyone was very impressed by the girls skill set and the team work they showed throughout the game. Thank you to Stacks for an enjoyable game and having us up to play with them. We look forward to them coming to play us at home in Ballyrickard soon. A great day was had by all.

U9 Boys
U9 Boys had a great session with their coaches. They worked on their kicking and tackling skills and Finished with small sided games which everyone enjoyed.

U10 Girls
What a fantastic first game our U10 girls had today. Every girl showed their true ability throughout the game. From our mid field winning possession and feeding it into our forwards, to our backs turning the ball over when the opposition were on the attack to our forwards getting through the defence and clocking up the scores and not forgetting our amazing goalie saving on target goal opportunities and her fantastic kick outs.  The girls showed that all their training is paying off and how much their skills have come along. They showed fantastic team work working the ball up and down the pitch and supporting each other all the time. Their coaches and parents were very proud of all of them. Thank you to Stacks for hosting us and for a competitive game.  We look forward to playing Ye again soon.

U13 Boys
Our U13 boys played Tarbert in Ballyrickard last Sunday afternoon. Every player showed great determination and ability throughout the game. The boys never gave up and played their hearts out but Tarbert has a very strong team and clocked up the scores with a score line of 1-8 to 5-14. Well done to Tarbert on their win and we look forward to playing you again in the future.

U17 Boys
Progress, progress progress. Kerins O’Rahillys/ St. Pats made it 2 wins in a week as the hard work on the training pitch is showing signs of moulding the team into a formidable cohesive unit. Our forwards had raised the standards very impressively against Skellig/Valentia the previous week and the defence was challenged to match them. They matched and surpassed expectations, limiting Castlegregory to shots from difficult angles. Of particular source of pride was regaining pocession from our own kickout, where we won 15 of 16. Our midfield continue to work themselves into the ground, moving the ball quickly into our free scoring forwards. Our team must continue working hard if they are to continue their progress. The attitude appears to good, but tougher challenges await.
Kerins O’Rahillys/ St. Pats 4-10 Castlegregory 0-11 Man of the match was Jake Hoare.

Congratulations: Congratulations and best wishes to all who graduated from the class of 2022 especially the students from Kerins O Rahillys.

Juvenile Academy training continues next Sunday at 10am in Ballyrickard we look forward to seeing you all then.  And remember new members always welcome so bring a friend along too.

Tralee Parnells U12 Amber Team who played Abbeykillix team 2 in Caherslee

Our u12 Amber team lined out against Abbeykillix team 2 in Caherslee last Monday evening. The girls played well and had some early chances but abbeykillix scored the first point of the game. After some tactical changes at half time Parnells started to gather momentum and scored a couple of hard fought goals. There was some great hand passing and teamwork. The girls gave it their all and deserved their first win of the season. Abbeykillix were worthy opponents and should be very proud of their performance. Well done all.

Meanwhile the Blue Team put in another excellent performance also on Monday evening against Abbeykillix Team 1. The girls are getting better with each game and really coming to grips with their positions on the field. The management were very proud of every player on the night.  Well done to all.

U17 Hurling

Tralee Parnells 2-16 Lixnaw 0-17 AET

They say a rising tide lifts all boats and that seemed to be the case last Sunday evening in Lixnaw as Parnells U17s came out the right side of a terrific battle against the home side after extra time in the Div 2 Co. League semi-final. Back at the venue of the club’s historic Féile win a few weeks ago, this time the minors showed the battling qualities that were needed to win a tight match. There was little between the teams throughout the match. Parnells played with the wind in the first half and Andrew Kerins got Parnells off to a great start with a super long range point in the first minute. Points were exchanged for the rest of the first half, including a fine effort from Dylan Cunningham, and Parnells held a narrow 1 point advantage at half-time, 0-7 to 0-6. The second half followed much the same pattern with points being exchanged, though Lixnaw were putting the Parnells defence under serious pressure. However, as a unit, they held firm and ensured no goals were conceded. Diarmuid Galvin hit a great point to lift the siege. Barry Hamilton was causing the Lixnaw defence problems of their own with his solo runs up the right wing and with time running out, another run drew a foul. Oisin O’Sullivan stepped up and with nerves of steel, as he had done throughout the game, converted the resulting free to bring the match to extra time. Full-time Parnells 0-12 Lixnaw 0-12.

In the first period of extra time, and with the benefit of the wind, Lixnaw raced into a 3 point lead, with the ever-dangerous Ivan Conway hitting some fine scores. Parnells were creating panic in the Lixnaw defence when they got the ball into the full forward line, but just couldn’t breach the defence. However, just before half-time in extra time, Tomás O’Connell, on as a sub for Dylan Cunningham, picked up a loose ball and slammed it to the net. So, with the last ten minutes to play, the sides still couldn’t be separated. HT ET Parnells: 1-12 Lixnaw 0-15

The momentum was now with the Parnells lads, and they got off to a great start with a couple of fine points from Andrew, who caused Lixnaw trouble all evening. Highlight of this period was another run by Barry, this time through the heart of the defence to score an inspirational point. At this stage, Parnells held a 2 point lead and Lixnaw were now pressing for the goal they needed. Cian Harris was rock solid in the Parnells goal, however, and the rearguard couldn’t be breached. With Lixnaw out of position, a long ball over the top found Tomás unmarked and he cracked a great goal past the keeper from a tight angle to ensure the Parnells win. It would be unfair to single out anyone as this was a true team performance with all players and subs playing their part. We now await the winners of Ballyheigue and Causeway in the Final. Thanks to Lixnaw for a very sporting match and to Shane Conway, Kerry hurler, for offering congratulations and words of encouragement to the boys after the match. Team: Cian Harris, William O’Donoghue, John Joe Hanafin, Ben Cullinan, Barry Hamilton, Rory Reen, Cian Hennessy, Andrew Kerins, Dan Maloney (Oran Murphy), Sean Barrett (Jack Canty), Diarmuid Galvin, Oisin O’Sullivan, Mark Lynch (Will Somers), Peter Doyle, Dylan Cunningham (Tomás O’Connell). Subs: Donnacha Buttimer, Adam Webb

Intermediate Hurling

On a beautiful Friday evening in Caherslee our Senior side completed their division 1 County League campaign with a hard fought game against Ballyheigue. The match was 7 minutes old before we got our first score (a pointed free from Gearoid Doc O’Doherty) by this time the visitors had 4 points on the board. The next score of the game was in the 11th minute when Darragh Moloney scored his 1st point of the game from play which was closely followed by another Doc free to leave the minimum between the sides. In the 17th minute the away side got the goal that they had been threatening, Darragh Moloney then scored his 2nd point but Ballyheigue struck for another goal and a point before half time. Half Time Score: Tralee Parnells 0-05 to 2-07 Ballyheigue. The second half started brightly for Parnells with Cathal Dunne winning a free from the throw in which Doc pointed, Cathal was to win 7 frees throughout the game in various positions around the field which highlighted the work he got through over the hour. Ballyheigue responded 5 minutes later with a point from play before Darragh Moloney won a high ball at the edge of the 21 turned his man and scored a lovely point (his 3rd of the day). In the 39th minute Mark Reale made a brilliant save to keep us in the game, the score was 0-07 to 2-08 at the time. A few Ballyheigue points from frees and play had them ahead 0-07 to 2-12 by the 45th minute. We kept battling away until the end and were rewarded with scores from Cillian O’Riordan from play and two more frees from Doc one of which was from inside his own 65yard line. Ballyheigue finished strong with the final two points of the game.  Final score: Tralee Parnells 0-10 to 2-16 Ballyheigue.  1 Mark Ryall 2 Eddie Sheehy 3 Tim Kelliher 4 Stephen Morrissey 5 Jack Doyle 6 Tommy O’Connor 7 Jerome Daly 8 Cillian O’Riardan 9 Cathal Dunne 10 Barry Lyons 11 Tadhg Reen 12 Andrew Morrissey 13 Darragh Moloney 14 Doc 15 Donal O’Brien (Sub Stephen Ryan)

The focus now turns to the upcoming Intermediate championship, we have no date for the draw yet. Best wishes to the Kerry Senior Hurlers in the Joe McDonagh cup final next weekend.

Junior Hurling

Tralee Parnells B 3-12 Abbeydorney C 3-9

Tralee Parnells B got their second win of their Div 3 Co. League campaign in Caherslee last Wednesday evening. Both teams were very evenly matched and Abbeydorney held a narrow half time lead, though Ian Moynihan had a good goal for Parnells. At the start of the second half, it didn’t look great for Parnells as Abbeydorney converted a penalty. However, Parnells pushed on and 2 cracking goals, 1 each from Eddie Sheehy and Paul Daly, gave Parnells the breathing space they needed. In fact, Daly finished with 1-7, as he was unerring with placed ball. Despite Abbeydorney getting a third goal from a close in free and pressing for the equalising goal they needed, the defence remained resolute and Parnells held on for a well deserved win.

UNDER 7 BOYS & GIRLS

There was no training on Sunday due to a Club Coaching Course.

Next training session will be Sunday June 5th.

New players are always welcome.

U8/U10/GIRLS

We had a great turnout for our 1st midweek session on Wednesday.

We started with kick passing and moved onto hand passing and tackling drills before a very well contested game.

Keep up the good work girls. The improvement from all girls is there to see. A special thanks to all the parents for bringing the girls to training .

The girls had no training on Sunday and got to have a well-deserved lye in.

Next training is Wednesday evening 6.30-7.30pm

U12 Girls.

We played against Spa at home last Wednesday evening without a number of our regular players who were unavailable due to illness and the scheduling of the Cumann na mBunscoil Schools Division 1 final which was played in Austin Stacks Park at the same time.

We defended bravely and showed tremendous character against a very strong Killarney outfit and when the final whistle blew the girls from Killarney were ahead.

The girls should be very proud of how they are performing in the green and gold jersey this season. They have a never say die attitude and the commitment they show every week is admirable.

We are scheduled to play Currow away this Wednesday evening the 1st of June. Throw in time is still to be confirmed.

The coaches would like to thank all the parents and guardians who help out every week, washing jerseys or being the female liaison officer at games. Every little helps and we are very grateful.

U14 GIRLS

The new County League competition began last weekend and John Mitchel’s first game was away to Listowel Emmet’s B on Friday night.

There was a full turnout and thankfully we had Nadya back after a collision midweek in training.

It was a comprehensive victory for the Mitchel’s team. Solid at the back with Eabha,  Sadhbh and Gia in the full back line, while Laoise, Isabel, Ava and later Nicole kept the Listowel forwards out.

Midfield saw Nadya, Ellie and Brigid rotating, while up front Kerri at full forward was a major focal point, scoring 2 goals and causing no end of bother, ably assisted by Ellie Reidy, Ella and Dionne, while the rest of the players, including Katelyn, Megan and Kelly, all worked hard when they came on.

A great start to the competition and next week sees the team play Firies.

Training continues during the week and coaches are looking for a full turnout.

U16 GIRLS

Training for U16 ladies continues this Monday evening from 6.00-7.00pm in preparation for upcoming North Kerry League.

We were up by 9pts up at half time, a typical game of 2 halves.

We ran out of steam and had a few injuries which changed the game . We were beaten by 5pts in the finish.

We are learning more at every game.

Juvenile Academy

U5

Great Numbers took part in training on Sunday Morning, Everyone enjoyed a good run around, navigating through cones (aka volcanoes) and practicing all sorts of movement skills in the obstacle course. Well done to our Players of the Week Jack and Kai.

U7

A very enjoyable morning at training on Sunday, we had a quick few drills before we brought all those skills into a game. Numbers were very good and we broke up into different teams for a few games. Player of the week was Jack Galvin who’s improving week after week
Thanks to Noel and James for helping out and we had a special guest coach in Kieran O Shea.

U8 Girls

Thanks to Annascaul for hosting ourselves & Dingle Under 8 and Under 10 girls. It was a beautiful evening of sporting fun with well-balanced sides all getting great experience. We had 2 teams of 6 under 8s. Our girls really impressed the coaches with a great display of skills & learned more positional awareness through every game. We’ll keep practicing the 1 hop rule & position play in training. We will have a mini blitz again In Dingle towards the end of June & we will host the fixture later in the summer. Very well done St Pats.

U9 Boys

The u9s started the session with a warmup by running some laps and stretching. We then practiced our soloing around cones. Finally we worked on kicking drills for points and goals, before we had a competitor match to finish off the session. We will play Annascaul at home next week, we will be in touch closer to the time with Details.

U10 Girls

U10 Girls played their first games of the season on Sunday evening 29th of May with a blitz against Dingle and Annascaul at Annascaul GAA grounds.

The girls played really well together in both games and worked hard throughout. First up against Dingle the girls got the first score of the game. The first half was very tight coming in with a narrow lead of 0-2 to 0-1 at half time. The girls took off in the second half really taking control of the game. The defence of Hannah Enright, Emma Lacey & Clodagh Kane were solid at the back only conceding 2 points throughout the entire game. Ria Horgan in her first game for St. Pats had an excellent game in goals with massive kick outs to her midfield every time. Ailbhe Hennessy, Emma Gilbride and Rosie Dennehy worked hard in the heat covering every blade of grass from midfield. Ailbhe had an excellent game scoring 2-4 from play. Our forwards Rosa Barret Gordillo, Jessica Lacey, Mary-Kate O’Shea and Rachel Colivet played really well and caused a lot of problems for the Dingle defence. Full time score St. Pats 2-4 to Dingle 0-2. Well done girls on their first win of the season.

Next up the girls played Annascaul. The girls tried hard in this game, their second game in a row against a bigger and more physical side playing in their first game of the blitz. Tired legs started to show in this game which they were chasing from early on. A change of goal keepers saw Emma Lacey go into goals who deserves a special mention for making a total of 4 saves in the game. Well done Emma. It was a game like this we really missed our injured star player Grace Costello who is never afraid to get stuck in. We wish our friend and teammate Grace a speedy recovery and hope she will be back playing with us soon. We were unfortunately on the losing side in this game. Final score Annascaul 3-4 to St. Pats 1-0.

Well done girls on a great performance all around. The girls enjoyed this blitz which we will have again, both in Dingle and at home in St. Pats over the summer months. No training next Sunday 5th as the Dingle Way Challenge takes place. We return Sunday 12th of June at 10am at John Mitchels GAA Club where we will take them on in our 3rd game of the season.

U11

This week we trained on Thursday and had a challenge game vs Kerins O’Rahillys on Sunday. Minus a number of regulars, our windmill team battled hard in the warm conditions but were eventually defeated by KOR’s blue team while our bridge team had a narrow win vs KOR’s white team. This Thursday sees the resumption of the County Go Games where we travel to Dingle to play the locals. Meet up and throw in time to be confirmed later in the week.

U12 Girls

Well done on another great training session on Sunday last in beautiful weather conditions. A big welcome to Ava Moriarty who came to her first training session with St. Pats this week and showed huge potential. Well done to Eve o Sullivan who won our player of the week trophy for playing a superb game on Wednesday evening in spa and putting in another great training session this week. Eve never misses a training session or a match and needs to be recognised for that. Game on Tuesday evening in St. Pats at 6.30 against Finuge/ St. Senan’s.

U13

In lovely weather conditions and the pitch in good condition following recent work on it our Under-13’s faced the challenge of a combined Annascaul – Lispole team. While the opposition had a panel of 20 or so players we started with the disadvantage of having only 12 players. The extra player enjoyed by the opposition for most of the first half made a tough task even more difficult and by half time we were very much in arrears. We were able to muster up another player for the second half which did allow us to at least balance the number of players. While battling hard and defending stoutly in the second half we were never going to be able to make up the first half deficit and the game finished with a win for the opposition.

U17 Central Region

St Pats/Kerins O Rahillys 4-10

Castlegregory 0-11

Progress, progress progress. St Pats/Kerins O Rahillys made it 2 wins in a week as the hard work on the training pitch is showing signs of moulding the team into a formidable cohesive unit. Our forward had raise the standards very impressively against Skellig/Valentia the previous week and the defence was challenged to match them. They matched and surpassed expectations, limiting Castlegregory to shots from difficult angles. Of particular source of pride was regaining possession from our own kick out, where we won 15 of 16. Our midfield continue to work themselves into the ground, moving the ball quickly into our free scoring forwards. Our team must continue working hard if they are to continue their progress. The attitude appears to be good, but tougher challenges await.

Man of the Match Jake Hoare

The Central Region sponsored by Kellihers’ Toyota Tralee Round 5 is to take place on the 30th  of May at 7pm. St Pats/Kerins O Rahillys play St Michael’s Foilmore in St Michael’s Foilmore.

Seniors

Development League Division 6 Round 4

St Pats B 1-12

Duagh B 2-05

On a hot May Day Conor Enright opened the scoring for St Pats with a point, Duagh replied with three points on their own from number 12, 9 and 14. Breandan Savage scored his own point for St Pats, Cormac Lynch was given a penalty in the seventeenth minute to which he converted to a goal.  Duagh got a goal of their own to go a point ahead. Both Cormac Lynch and Martin Savage each added their own point to bring the half time score to St Pats 1-04 to Duagh 1-03.

Adam Bailey started the second half with his own point and number 8 of Duagh with his point. Patrick Dowling went up the field to add his own point to St Pats Score, Duagh’s number 14 added his own point. As the match went on it was St Pats who dominated with scoring with scores from two points from Breandan Savage, one point from Danny Greaney and one point from Patrick Dowling. As St Pats Scores added up Duagh’s number 11 shot for the back of the net which went in and bounced as quick back out from hitting the bar. Adam Bailey and Breandan Savage added each one of their own points. Paul Hayes the Referee blew the final whistle and the score line stood St Pats B 1-12 to Duagh B 2-05.

Our seniors play in their Round 8 of the Credit Union County League against Firies on Saturday the 4th of June at 5pm in Blennerville.

Congratulations

To Kerry who won against Limerick in their Munster GAA Football Senior Championship.

THE team at Kerry Cancer Support Group launched their “Leap of Faith ‘22” challenge on Saturday last with charity ambassador Colm Cooper doing a demo on the day.

The abseil will take place in Croke Park on August 21. They are looking for fearless fundraisers to descend from the iconic Hogan Stand and abseil over 100 feet to pitch side.

Funds raised from the abseil will finance the work being done by the Group in Kerry, West Cork and West Limerick in the provision of their supported Healthlink transport services. These transport patients to cancer related appointments free of charge in the region.

.

The funds will ensure that the group continues to uphold its mission and vision – “That no one should face their cancer journey alone”. Since setting up the transport service in 2010 the group have transported over 6.000 service users to nearly 60.000 appointments and have become affectionately known as a travelling support group.

Kerry Cancer Support Group have not set a fundraising goal for the abseil as its their first time doing the event.

They hope that the challenge will be a popular one in Kerry and provide a unique opportunity to see the Hogan Stand from a different angle.

Spaces are limited so there is a €100 registration fee to secure a place. The Group will not set a target for each individual but hope that each does their best to raise funds to help keep this vital service on the road.

Breda Dyland, Service Manager, with KCSG said; “We hope that the day will be an exciting one with a difference in Croke Park. Kerry people are accustomed to a very different view from the Hogan Stand and doing the abseil with us will certainly be the ultimate adrenaline rush. We have been planning this for the past year and a half but restrictions meant we waited until now to book our slot.

“We are really looking forward to a day with family, friends and colleagues. Kerry Comedian Bernard Casey was one of the first people to sign up so he should keep us entertained! We like many other charities are still in the midst of the fallout from the pandemic. Fundraising took a backseat because we were too busy keeping everyone safe. We hope that the “Leap of Faith ‘22” challenge will raise much needed for the service and help us to continue to provide the vital transport links to treatment centres in the region.”

Commenting further, Siobhan Donnelly Marketing & Development Manager of Cara Credit Union said; “Cara Credit Union were delighted to support this unique and creative competition. We are constantly seeking out new ways to support college students and secondary school students.  The introduction of our free student current account and debit card is aimed specifically at this cohorts.  The competition demonstrated the initiative, creativity, and care for the environment that students possess. It is great that college and school life is come back to normal – and young people can start to get dressed up and socialise again.”

Know Your Rights: One Parent Family Payment

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

What is the One-Parent Family Payment?

The One-Parent Family Payment (OFP) is a payment for men and women under 66 who are bringing children up without the support of a partner. To get OFP your children must be under a certain age.

You can work and get OFP. However, to get OFP your income must be below a certain amount.

How does one qualify for the One-Parent Family Payment?

To qualify for the One-Parent Family Payment (OFP) you must:

• Be aged under 66
• Be the parent, step-parent, adoptive parent or legal guardian of a child under a certain age.
• Be the main carer of at least one child under the age limit. The child must live with you. OFP is not paid if the parents have joint equal custody of a child or children.
Pass a means test – a means test looks at any income that you have
• Live in Ireland and meet the habitual residence condition
• Not be living with a spouse, civil partner or cohabiting

Continued below…

.

What is the Age Limit for a child?

To get the One-Parent Family Payment (OFP) you must have at least one child under 7 years of age. You may get OFP for a child aged 7 or over if you are getting Domiciliary Care Allowance, half-rate Carer’s Allowance or Blind Pension or after the death of a spouse, partner or civil partner

What happens when my child is over the age limit?

Your OFP will stop when your youngest child reaches the age limit. The Department of Social Protection (DSP) will inform you of the end date for your payment.

You may get the Jobseeker’s Transitional payment. This is a payment for people parenting alone whose children are aged between 7 and 13.

You can get information and advice about your options from your local Social Welfare Branch Office or Citizens Information Centre.

How is my income from work treated in the means-test for OPFP?

The first €165 of your gross weekly earnings (wages and profit from self-employment) is not taken into account in the means test.

Half the remainder of your gross earnings per week is assessed as means and you may get a reduced rate of OFP.

Social insurance contributions, superannuation/PRSA contributions and trade union subscriptions are not taken into account when calculating your gross earnings.

You can contact your local Citizens Information Centre or Social Welfare office for advice on how your income from work would impact the level of OPFP you can receive..

How will the maintenance I receive be treated in the means test for OPFP?

Maintenance payments for you and maintenance to you for any of your children is assessed in the means test.

If you are getting maintenance from more than one person, all the payments are added together and the total is assessed. However, only half of your income from maintenance will be deducted from your OFP.

If you have housing costs, your rent or mortgage repayment up to a maximum of €95.23 per week can be offset against maintenance payments. Half the balance is then assessed as means. You must provide proof of rent or mortgage payments

Can I receive OPFP if I decide to  go to college?

You can keep your One-Parent Family Payment (OFP) if you are in education. You may have the option to transfer to the Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) or to stay on your current payment and apply for a student grant.

You can contact your local Citizens Information Centre or Social Welfare office for advice on which option is of greatest benefit to you. You cannot get BTEA and a student grant together.

• For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary.

The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm.  Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www.citizensinformation.ie for further information.

Sponsored: Venus Bliss Tackles Cellulite At CHRC

.

Mary O’Donnell, of the Cosmetic and Hair Restoration Clinic in the Bon Secours in Tralee, on tackling cellulite at the clinic…

Is cellulite affecting your confidence? It is estimated 85% of females, over the age of 21 and older have cellulite.

Cellulite is more common in females, often due to hormonal changes, genetics, diet, and other lifestyle factors.

It is completely harmless but can look unsightly and the most common areas that can be affected are the thighs, buttocks, hips and abdomen.

The upper arms tend to see more cellulite as we age due to elasticity loss and weight gain can also make cellulite more noticeable.

In CHRC, we use our Venus Bliss device to tackle cellulite, which will tighten the skin, safely target the cellulite and underlying fat cells, while encouraging the production of collagen and elastin to improve the appearance of bumps and dimpling.

Our non-surgical treatment is FDA approved and we are the only provider of Venus Bliss in Ireland.

Our Aesthetic Practitioner will have a one-to-one consultation with you to discuss which areas of your body are concerning you and tailor a plan to suit you.

The cellulite treatment time is between 15-30 minutes depending on the area. For optimal results, treatments should be done once a week.

The cellulite area will feel warm during the treatment and may do so for up to two hours afterwards.

A lot of clients tend to doze off while the treatment is being performed as it can be quite relaxing!

Lunch break is a very popular time to avail of our cellulite treatment and you return to work as normal afterwards.

We also recommend to exercise on the day of the treatment and to drink water, to flush out any toxins which will be extremely beneficial in the overall results of the cellulite treatment.

Contact us to learn more and book in for your cellulite treatment; 086 0786120 chrc@bonsecours.ie www.bonsecourschrc.ie

Finnegan On Films: War, Comedy, Drama And Romance On The Box

.

On a weekend dominated by sporting attractions, there is still a good selection of films available on the television tonight says our movie guy, James Finnegan…

Hotel Transylvania (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1) is a comedy animated story about a hotel  set up by Count Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) for the benefit of all the ghosties and ghoulies looking for a break away from it all, especially from those pesky humans.

The Count is very protective of his teenage daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez), so when she takes a liking to a lost human hitchhiker, Jonathan (Andy Samberg), who turns up at the Hotel looking for a room, he is not a happy vampire.

There are plenty of other famous Monster characters on site to help celebrate Mavis’s 118th Birthday, including Frankenstein (Kevin James), Warewolf Wayne (Steve Buscemi) and Griffin, the Invisible Man (David Spade) among others.

.

This film has spawned a number of sequels and television series so settle down to a family fun film.

In Up in the Air (Saturday 9.20pm TG4), Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) is a Human Resources consultant who specialises in employee termination.

He travels around the country not only giving people the sack, but also gives motivational speeches.

He rejoices in the impersonal lifestyle, collecting air miles and enjoying hotel services that require no effort or responsibility from him to maintain a house and home.

He meets up with a similar minded executive, Alex (Vera Farmiga), whenever their schedules connect.

However, his own role comes under threat when a young executive Natallie (Anna Kendrick) comes up with an online method to do the job.  Zoom anyone?  For once, you are not on mute!

Suppose you were a struggling musician, who woke up after an accident, to discover that you are the only one in the world to have any recollection or knowledge of the Beatles and their songs? Yesterday (Saturday 9.35pm RTE1) is Danny Boyle’s fun conceit that takes up this theme.

Like Jack Malik (Himesh Patel), you would probably claim you wrote all of them yourself.   However, his overnight success has ramifications, including causing difficulties with his girlfriend Ellie (Lily James).

With a fun role for Kate McKinnon as Jack’s LA Manager and a cameo by Ed Sheeran, this is a typical feel good Richard Curtis screenplay.

Black Hawk Down (Saturday 10.45pm RTE2) is based on the true life story of a US military raid that goes disastrously wrong in Mogadishu, Somalia.  The US attempt to mount a rescue mission to save colleagues who have been shot down.

Ridley Scott’s film gives a good impression of what it is like to be in an urban locked down situation, which we have become, unfortunately, far too used to from the Ukrainian War each day on our news programs.

With a large ensemble cast including Josh Hartnett, Eric Bana, Ewan McGregor, Sam Shepard, Tom Hardy and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, this is not a comfortable watch, but it is a gripping war film.   Enjoy and stay safe!
