Austin Stacks GAA Club News

.

THE LATE MICHEÁL HAYES: Even though he had been ill for some time the news of the death of Micheál Hayes on this Wednesday evening (13th July) was received with great sadness.

He was regarded by many as the man who was responsible for laying the foundation of the Club’s Second Golden Era from 1973 to 1994. The Club’s first Golden Era began in1928 and ended nine seasons later when we won our 5th SF Co. Championship victory in 1936.

The period between then and 1973 was regarded as the Club’s ‘barren period’. Many blame the financial and political conditions of that time as a contributing factor for this barren period, with emigration and recessions taking place from 1939 onwards following the start of World War 2.When Mícheál arrived back in Tralee in 1961as a Teacher at the Tralee CBS Primary School he got involved immediately with our youth teams. Along with people such as James Hobbert, Jack Parker, Joe Mulchinock, Paddy Drummond, Dan Ryan, Jackie Power and Michael Chuchy O’Connell, to name but a few, he launched a Youth Policy which he referred to as ‘The Ten Year Plan’.

Young players from seven years upwards were tutored by him and they immediately began to win trophies at Juvenile level, culminating in the Club’s first MF Co. Championship title in 1969.

Four years later that ‘Ten Year Plan’ resulted in the start of our Second Golden Era during which we won a further five Co. SF Championships between 1973 and 1986 with an 11th title coming eight years later in 1994. That Second Golden Era was the result of what Mícheál Hayes and his colleagues started away back in 1961.

Sincere sympathy to Maura, Brendan, Orla, Ultan, Vincent and Deirdre and to all Micheál’s extended family and friends.

SYMPATHY: Sincere sympathy is also offered to the families of the following who died recently: Micheál Hayes, Monavally and formerly Oakview (see tribute); Mariusz Klepachi, Bridge Street and formerly Castleisland and Warsaw; Declan O’Sullivan, Cloondara, Oakpark and formerly Glasheen Road, Cork; Seán Fitzgerald, Drogheda and formerly Brewery Road; and Kay (Catherine) McDonnell (nee Byrne), Clogherbrien and formerly Kilflynn and Zimbabwe; Richard Bono; and Emma Fitzgerald (nee Corkery), Ballinorig and formerly Ballyvelly and Ballyduff.

GOLF FUNDRAISER: Thanks to everyone in the Club and elsewhere who supported our recent Golf Fundraiser. See the Club Website for the comprehensive list of participants and congrats to Paul Barrett and Cathal Healy who were the eventual winners.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Dingle 1-16; Austin Stacks 1-13.

When both sides met in the earlier round of the competition (round 5 on 1st May) the game ended in a draw (2-12 to 1-15) but in this semi final encounter played in Annascaul on this Saturday evening (16th July) Dingle (the current Co. League holders) were never behind in a closely contested game.
They got off to the perfect start scoring four points without reply inside the first six minutes. Our first score came in the eight minute from a David Mannix free and David added two more from the spot by the 18thminutes. Our four remaining points of the half came from play with Shane O’Callaghan, Armin Heinrich, Conor Horan and team captain, Michael O’Donnell on target. This left Dingle ahead by three at half time ( 0-10 to 0-7).

And that was still the difference between the sides at full time when both sides scored 1-6 each. Michael O’Donnell’s goal inside the 2nd minute of the second half  gave us agreat start but Dingle never gave up and kept that three points lead right up to the end. Our remaining six points of the half came from six different players – Michael O’Donnell, Conor Horan, David Mannix (free), Jordan Kissane, Calvin Foley and Darragh O’Brien. Afterwards, Michael O’Donnell deservedly received the Celsius Menswear Man of the Match award

Team: Wayne Guthrie, Colin Griffin, Barry Shanahan, Eoghan Carroll, Armin Heinrich (0-1), Ronan Shanahan, Adam Curran, Michael O’Donnell (Capt) (1-2), Michael O’Gara, Conor Horan (0-2), David Mannix (0-4 frees), Jordan Kissane (0-1), Calvin  Foley (0-1), Gearóid Fitzgerald, Shane O’Callaghan (0-1).

Subs used: Luke Chester ((42m), Darragh O’Brien (42m) (0-1), Paul Barrett (50m).

Dingle will now play Dr. Crokes in the Co. League final while we look forward to the first round of the Club Championship with eight teams divided into two groups of 4. Dingle, Kenmare, Na Gaeil and Spa are in Group A, while ourselves, Dr. Crokes, Kerins O’Rahillys and Templenoe are in Group B.

In the opening round, which at the moment if fixed for Sunday fortnight (7th August) at 1pm we play Templenoe in the Legion pitch at Derreen. In round 2 we have a home game against Kerins O’Rahillys and in the third and final round we are away to Dr. Crokes. No date fixed as we write for those two last rounds.

B FOOTBALL: Our two opening rounds in this season’s Tralee/St. Brendans League against Ballymac and John Mitchels were postponed with the games still to be refixed as we write. Our round 3 game against Kerins O’Rahillys was due to be played on this Tuesday evening (19th July). Check Club Website for details.

THE C TEAM: St. Pats 2-11; Austin Stacks 0-10.

After going down to Churchill in the opening round of the Tralee/St. Brendan’s League last week our boys put up a far better show in Blennerville on last Tuesday evening (12th July) but still had to give way to a stronger St. Pats side. When Pats goaled after just 36 seconds we recovered well and had drawn level by the 21st minute (0-6 to 1-3) with five different scorers – Dara Moriarty with our opening score and points each by Jimmy Charles, Conor Lowe and Daniel O’Rourke with two by Caden O’Mahony. However, Pats added a goal and two points in the closing minutes of the half to give them a five points lead at half time (2-5 to 0-6).

The home side outscored us again in the second half by six points to four – our four points coming from Dara Moriarty, Caden O’Mahony (free), Jimmy Charles and Joey Kinsella.

It was great to see four players making their first appearances of the season and they showed that they have lost nothing since they last lined out with the Club – Joey O’Shea, Joey Kinsella, Cathal O’Reilly and Brian O’Sullivan.

Team: Seamus Bastible, Craig Teahan, Shane Greensmyth, Joey O’Shea, Gearóid Kilgallen, Conor Lowe (0-1), Jack Doyle, Billy Stack, Greg Scanlon, Dean Scanlon (Capt), Caden O’Mahony (0-3 – one free), Daniel O’Rourke (0-1), Dara Moriarty (0-2), Joey Kinsella (0-1), James Charles (0-2).

Subs used: Cathal O’Reilly (ht), Brian O’Sullivan (47m), Pádraig Breen (50m).

The 3rd and final round at home to Ardfert was due to played on this Tuesday (19th July) See Club Website for details..

MINOR FOOTBALL: Fixtures have come to hand for this season’s Co. Championship. Twelve teams are taking part – seven Divisional teams and five Club teams (ourselves, Dr. Crokes, Kenmare Shamrocks, Laune Rangers and Rathmore). There are three groups involved with four teams in each group. In Group 1 we have East Kerry, North Kerry, Rathmore and St. Brendans. U7 Hurling

The rivalry was mighty in Caherslee on the Friday the 8th July as the under 8 girls took on the under 7 boys in a friendly but competitive match.  All present were highly impressed with the skills displayed. The dedication these players and parents have to camogie and hurling is something to behold.  Congratulations to our players of the week Cillian Fitzmaurice and Killian McMahon, well done boys.

U8 Camogie

The U8 girls took part in the Cillard U8 Camogie Blitz at a sunny Kilmoyley on Saturday morning.  While the numbers were low due to the holiday season that did not deter the girls from giving their best. A few members of the Killarney joined to ensure we had a full team.  It was a great example of all working towards the same goal to have fun and enjoy the game of Camogie. Thank you to all of the parents who brought their girls out and to Cillard for their wonderful hosting.

U9 Hurling

Well done to our U9 boys who had three excellent games against Ballyheigue in Caherselee  on Tuesday evening. There was great progress on display by all players with a special mention to the U8s who have improved immensely in the last few weeks. Keep up the good work

U10 Camogie

Congratulations to all the U10’s (and special guests) who hosted Ballyduff on a beautiful sunny Wednesday evening in Caherslee. The two teams played in a very evenly contested battle and the girls were amazing! Thanks to Ballyduff for travelling to visit us in huge numbers and to Lana and Mike our referees.

The Tralee Parnells U12 Squad who took part in the North Kerry Blitz in glorious sunshine last Saturday

U12 Hurling

In sweltering heat on Saturday morning Parnells hosted a five team U12 North Kerry hurling blitz in Caherslee. Despite the testing conditions we saw a marvellous display of hurling from all teams. In attendance were Tralee Parnells, Lixnaw, Causeway, Kilmoyley and Firies.  Thank you to all of those that helped out on the day.  Thank you also to our two referees Tadhg Reen and Orán Murphy.

U12 Camogie

Our U11 girls travelled to Causeway for a blitz on Saturday morning. They played really well and in true Parnells spirit some of the girls joined another team who didn’t have enough players.  The girls scored some nice goals and a point so the skills are really coming along. Thank you to all the parents who supported the team and who brought along ice pops at half time. The girls played well and should be proud of themselves. Thank you to Causeway for hosting the blitz.

U14 Camogie

The Parnells Amber team played round four of the U14 league against a very strong Causeway team. The girls worked really hard to progress the ball to the forwards and were unlucky not to get more on the scoreboard. They showed great teamwork and had a great 2nd half but unfortunately they couldn’t get the scores they deserved. The next round should be fun as they face Parnells Blues. We’ll have a split camp that night but we can expect lots of enjoyment playing our own squad!

Lots of fun and action at the Tralee Parnells family fun evening

Fun Day

Instead of the normal training sessions for our younger players, the managers and coaches organised a family fun event last Friday evening.  With twelve events to choose from the players had a great evening of fun and laughter.  Basking in glorious sunshine the boys and girls tried their hand at the obstacle course, potato & spoon race, tug of war, sack race, welly toss just to name a few of the challenges.  The huge effort put in by coaches, volunteers and parents really paid off as everyone seemed to enjoy the evening.  Thank you to you all who helped out. We are already looking forward to next years event !

U17s

After a great win last weekend against Kilgarvan our Minors faced St Brendans in the semi final of the Minor County Championship.  The match took place in Abbeydorney on Sunday morning.  Unfortunately, St Brendans proved too strong for us with a final score of 2-22 vs 0-7 for Parnells. We wish the best of luck to St Brendans in the final.

Intermediate Hurling

Our senior hurlers are through to the quarter finals of the Intermediate Championship where they will play Kilgarvan.  The match will take place this Wednesday evening 20th July at 7pm in Caherslee.  We look forward to a great turn out in Caherslee to support the team.  Best of luck to the players and to Kevin and his management team.  Parnells abu.

Lotto

Our second draw takes place on Monday evening 18th July. Also, this week we will have an extra draw as anybody who has bought 10 draws or more will be entered in a draw for two tickets for the upcoming football All Ireland Final.  The lotto jackpot will be €1000.  You can play via the Clubforce app or follow the link at https://traleeparnells.gaa.ie.  All support is greatly appreciated, thank you.

UNDER 7 BOYS & GIRLS

We had a wonderful morning in the hall this Sunday where the players challenged each other and the coaches to relay races!

Each race focused on a new skill which tested everyone throughout the session.

The players were definitely the winners this weekend.

U8/U10/GIRLS

The girls put in a fantastic effort in the glorious sunshine on Sunday last.

The 15 girls went straight into a warm up by working on hand passing and calling for the ball.

They went straight into a kicking drill where they girls are showing huge improvements each day.

Training will take a break next Sunday due to the All Ireland final so we will resume the following week.

Training days and times will be sent out to parents in due course.

U12 GIRLS

The break from competitive action on the pitch  has give the girls a well deserved break and the coaches an opportunity to work on a few things with the team ahead of the start of the Town league.

Training has gone extremely well over the past week and compiled with the really successful John Mitchels Cúl Camp, the girls are now playing really excellent football and look really sharp.

We are also delighted to welcome two new girls to the U12  team. Mia and Sophie hit the ground running on Sunday morning and we welcome them to the John Mitchels Club.

UNDER 15 BOYS

On Wednesday evening last we made the long journey to Templenoe to play Templenoe/Tuosist Derrynane/Sneem combined.

In the first half we found ourselves 6pts behind but the boys dug deep in the second half to claw it back and go 2pts in front.

The fighting spirit from the boys was a joy to watch but deep into injury time we conceded a late penalty to see us lose by a single point.

Unfortunately we were not the victors on the night but that’s football.

The boys left everything out there and deserve a lot of credit for their efforts.

Well done to team and mentors and the crack on the way back on the bus was brilliant with some great singers.

Football is about fun and enjoyment and not all about winning we took a lot of positives from the game and were happy how the lads played and behaved.

U9 boys: The u9s took it easy on Sunday morning with a shooting and catching drill to start followed by a game where each team needed two passes before they scored. We finished the session with a penalty shootout which the boys thoroughly enjoyed. Training continues on Thursday at 6.45pm.

U11 boys: Fantastic fun session last Sunday morning. We just did some kicking drills and finished with shooting drills and a penalty shootout, coaches v players. Unfortunately for the players the coaches won both competitions with a little help from Eanna, Ethan, Rory and Nathan. Great fun was had by all.

U13 boys (White team): Na Gaeil White team played Austin Stacks last Sunday evening in very hot conditions and it was a very tough contest with every score having to be fought hard for.

Austin Stacks had a great start with two early goals and followed it up by two points. Na Gaeil started slowly but started to come into it after the water break with great defending and fantastic team play. We went in down at halftime 3-4 to 2-4.

The second half saw Na Gaeil put in a huge shift and we took control of the second half. It was a great display of fitness and teamwork. Every player on the field used every ounce of energy before the final whistle. It was what was needed to overcome a strong footballing Stacks team. Final score was Na Gaeil 5-13 to Austin Stacks 3-5.

U13 boys (Green team): Played Stacks last Sunday evening in Killeen in the Town League. Conditions were really hot and our boys put in a fine display. Stacks started better and built up a 2-4 to 0-1 lead in the first quarter.

Our lads responded really well and fought really hard to close the gap to 7 points at halftime. The second half was a battle for both teams and Na Gaeil tried their utmost to win the game but Stacks held out and won 5-11 to 5-6. It was a great display by both teams in the sweltering heat. Thanks to Austin Stacks for two sporting matches.

U15 boys: Last Wednesday evening Dingle were the visitors to Killeen for our first game in the Kellihers Toyota Central Region Div 3. Dingle won the toss and elected to play with the breeze.

They led by 3 points to 1 after 5 minutes but then Na Gaeil enjoyed a purple patch, scoring 2 goals and a points without reply to lead by 2-2 to 0-3 after 15 minutes. However, Dingle then took over, adding 1-2 to their score to leave the sides level at halftime.

A super individual point from Conor Lucey from the throw-in saw Na Gaeil get their noses in front once more only for Dingle to hit back with 1-1 to go 3 points ahead. Brian Heaphy and Brian Reidy both added points for Na Gaeil to cancel out 2 for Dingle. But then Dingle got through for a decisive goal to put them 6 points ahead with just 10 minutes remaining.

A last-minute penalty goal for na Gaeil proved to be only a consolation score as Dingle ran out winners on a scoreline of Na Gaeil 3-6, Dingle 3-9. Next Wednesday our lads are at home to Annascaul/Lispole at 7pm in round 2.

Our team was: Iarla Hanafin, Jack Kelly, Jeaic Canty, Cathal Fitzgerald, Ruadhan Clifford, Jamie Schoenmaker, Cillian Griffin, Darragh Morris, Conor Lucey, Jake Coffey, Liam Cooper, Brian Heaphy, Brian Reidy, William Somers, Paddy McElligott. Subs: Luke O’Donoghue, Karl Cronin, Cathal O’Sullivan.

Kerry Petroleum Senior Club Championship 2022:  Our senior men are in Group 1 of the Kerry Petroleum Senior Club Championship and their first outing will see them play Kenmare Shamrocks on Saturday 6th August at 7pm in the Dr. Crokes pitch in Lewis Road.

Juvenile Academy

U5

The U5 boys and girls enjoyed a fun morning in the sun. We practiced our hand pass and kicking skills. We had target practice with bean bags and hoops. Players of the week went to a brother and sister duo, well done Ella and Rian.

U7

An enjoyable morning at training, well done to Cathal Scanlon player of the week. Enjoy the two week break from Academy.

U8 Girls

Well done to our 11 enthusiastic girls who had a high energy session despite the heat this morning! We welcomed Anna Poff’s cousin Lucy to join us for fun 1 vs 2 drills and lots of kicking practice.

The girls’ skills are all improving and were on display in a short match to finish. All our girls had previously won the player of the week trophy so this week it was Olivia who impressed us all with her block downs and scoring!

Well done to you all. Enjoy your 2-week academy break & Cul Camp this week and we look forward to more matches in August. Don’t forget to cheer on Kerry next weekend and the Kerry Ladies the following week.

U9

We had a good session Sunday Morning in the heat, we started with a warmup which included hand passing, soloing and side stepping. We practiced our kick passing and point kicking and finished with a competitive game again. We will take a break from training for the next two weekends for the academy summer break.

U10 Girls

We had a great turnout today Sunday 17th July for U10 Girls training. The weather was glorious, and the temperature was high. During practice we focused on improving skills – hand passing, point scoring and kicking. Given the day was so hot the girls took plenty of water breaks and instead of a match we had a penalty competition where the girls had to score against goalkeeper coach Kieran.

While it wasn’t an easy task, they made some great strikes resulting in some fine goals. Special mention to Grace Costello on her first day back after recovering so well from her injury, and Lexi who joined us today for training for the first time. We are breaking for the next 2 Sundays after which we will look forward to more training and matches in August.

U11 Boys

Our boys trained on Thursday and Sunday morning this week in preparation for the Central Region Go Games which will commence in the next few weeks.

We were also delighted to hear that our team was chosen to play in the Munster U11 Go Games in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Our boys will travel to Cork on Tuesday week which will be a great opportunity for them all.

We will train this Thursday in preparation for it and there will be no training on Sunday due to the All-Ireland final. Keep up the practice at home and we hope all our lads enjoy the Cúl camp this week.

U12 Girls

Well done to everyone for coming to training on Sunday morning in such warm conditions. Seen as this was our last session for 2 weeks, we had a fun filled session where the girls were allowed to choose what games to play.

We played dodge ball, obstacle courses, races, football rounders and prisoner boxes. All the girls got sweets and ice pops to cool down afterwards. Also Well done to Niamh Murphy who won our footballer of the week trophy.

Niamh has played excellent in a lot of our matches and always manages to score a few sneaky goals. There have been many occasions where Niamh has deserved to win the trophy and her time has finally come. Keep up the practice at home and we will see you all in 2 weeks.

U13

Training continues with a very good session in Kerins O’Rahilly’s pitch in Ballyrickard on Tuesday last.

The extra numbers participating in training is improving the quality and intensity of the sessions. On Thursday evening we had a challenge game against Castlegregory played in St Pat’s.

This was the first game for the amalgamated Kerins O’Rahillys/St. Pat’s team, and it proved to be a challenging one for this new team. The first half was quite competitive with both sides playing good quality football although Castlegregory maintained a lead for most of the half.

As the second half progressed the experience and teamwork of Castlegregory allowed them to dominate most of the exchanges and the game finished with them well in front. It was good to get this challenge game as it allowed a lot of players to get game time and experience playing together.

Training continues Tuesday evening in St Pat’s with the possibility of another challenge game on this Thursday. We hope all our young players participating in the Cúl Camp in St. Pat’s this week have a good week of fun, activity and develop their football skills.

U15

Both sides were defeated last week. In Div 2, Miltown Castlemaine got the better of our charges and in Div 5, Castleisland Desmond’s were victorious.

There is one remaining game in Div 5 v Ballymac and in Div 2 John Mitchels and Churchill provide the opposition to complete the fixtures venues for these games are to be decided.

U17

Our U17’s played valiantly in their replay of the semifinal of U17 Central Region against Skellig Rangers/Valentia, unfortunately it wasn’t to be in the end. Well done to all involved and to both Clubs working so well together.

Minor

St Brendan’s Minors begin their campaign in the Minor Football Championship Round 1 in Milltown on Monday night the 18th of July at 7pm against East Kerry.

Seniors B

Our Senior Bs played in their Round 2 of the Tralee/St Brendan’s Junior League against Austin Stacks C on Tuesday the 12th of July. Cillian Lynch scored a goal in the first few minutes of the first half.

A point was scored on behalf of Austin Stacks, Cillian Lynch kicked the ball to score a point. The opposition replied with a point of their own and Cillian lynch was awarded a free to which it sailed over the bar to add another point to St Pat’s scoring.

Austin Stacks scored two points in quick succession, Darragh Moriarty shot the ball over to add his own point. With time running low Austin Stacks added two of their own points. Cillian Lynch again scored a point with James Friel adding a point also, in the dying minutes of the first half Cillian Lynch shot the ball past the goalkeeper to score a goal. The first half ended St Pats 2-05 Austin Stacks C 0-06.

Austin Stacks got three unanswered points to try to close the gap between the two teams, three points were scored by Cormac Lynch and Breandan Savage got his own point also.

Austin Stacks scored another point to try to keep up with the scoring, Shane Jordan, and Ali Gardezi each got a point of their own to keep St Pats leading. This game was very quick, and credit must be giving to the Lynch Brothers who kept the game going with scoring or involved in assists throughout the game.

Each player had their part to play, and each played extremely well including substitutes who provided fresh legs when needed. The final whistle blew to read St Pats 2-11 to Austin Stacks C 0-10.

Our Senior B’s were to play in the Developmental League Final last Saturday night this wasn’t played and is postponed until further notice.

A NEW online map showcases over 130 different walking trails in County Kerry has been launched by Kerry County Council.

The Kerry Trails Map is an online interactive map for Kerry, which provides essential trail information for those who would like to explore the county’s numerous walks and trails.

The map was developed in partnership with the South Kerry Development Partnership and North East and West Kerry Development and was funded through the support of the Department of Rural and Community Development’s Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.

Continued below…

.

The project mapped 130 Kerry trails and offers over 270 options for walks throughout the county, and provides essential information including trail location, length, difficulty, duration, GPS coordinates, directions to the trailhead/parking areas and other important information.

“This is a really exciting showcase for what we have to offer here in Kerry,” said the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Francis Flynn.

“Given the popularity now of outdoor pursuits including walking and hiking, it is wonderful to have such a useful and interactive resource being made available to those wanting to explore and enjoy the many walks and trails which are available all over the county,” he said.

Head of Tourism with Kerry County Council, Niamh O’Sullivan said that developing and promoting trails and walks around the county is an integral part of the County Kerry Tourism Strategy.

“Kerry already has a well-established reputation for walking and hiking and this new map, which is so easy to use, will greatly complement the resources and information which is available to walkers from Kerry and beyond,” she said.

“I would like to acknowledge the assistance of Brian Coakley of Active Me who was involved in developing the map as well as SKDP and NEWKD and the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation who supported the initiative from the outset.”

The map can be downloaded for use off-line and offers a 3D view of trails to enhance the user experience.

Visit https://www.kerrycoco.ie/tourism/kerry-trails-map/ to view and download the map and follow Kerry County Council on social media for updates.

THE International Children’s Games team travelling to Coventry in August finished their fundraising drive with a well organised Spinathon at Manor Retail Park on Saturday last from 10am to 4pm.

The athletes were required to ride a Spin Bike for a period of one hour in pairs while the adults-mostly parents of the athletes and members of the ICG committee- supported them by receiving contributions from the public by bucket collection.

All in all the event went off without a hitch and the committee were more than happy with the funds raised on the day.

Continued below…

.

Tralee ICG chairman Mike Culloty thanked members of the public for their support and everyone who helped to make the day possible: “In reality it would be impossible for us to function without the support of the general public at events such as this, which enable us to continue participation at the Children’s Games on an annual basis. The 17 athletes travelling this year represent Kerry and Ireland in Track and Field, Swimming and Basketball”.

Preparations are well in order at this stage, with the different squads in training with their respective coaches and all should be ready for departure on August 10th from Farranfore airport to Stansted and then on to Coventry.
