PEIL FAOI 13: (i) Our U13 Black Team challenged Na Gaeil in our second game in the Tralee Town League (Division 1) competition on Sunday evening last (17th). We made the trip to Killeen determined to put in a solid performance despite missing some players and nursing a few injuries. Our boys started very well and put in a strong first half playing very good football; we deservedly led at the break….bhíomar chun tosaigh le haon chúl amháin….3-4 to 2-4. However, when our hosts came out for the second half they threw everything at us; our boys’ brave efforts kept the game alive until the final quarter. Eventually, i ndeireadh na feide, Na Gaeil powered ahead and took the laurels! Hard luck, lads, but a brave effort! Team Black: 3-5; Na Gaeil: 5-14. Thanks to our hosts for a great match and to the referee for his handling of the game. Training sessions as usual this week….on Tuesday and on Thursday. Keep up the training, boys…a lot of football still to be played and we’re improving all the time….growing in age and in wisdom and constantly improving in the skills of Gaelic football. (ii) Team Amber came away from Killeen with a well-deserved victory in the Tralee Town League (Division 3) competition on last Sunday evening’s (17th) encounter with Na Gaeil. An scór….Team Amber: 5-12; Na Gaeil B: 5-6. A blistering first half of football from Team Amber put them in firm control of this local derby. The boys’ power, pace and control had them reap five goals before the short whistle. A brace of points from Nathan O’Connor as well as great goals by Nathan Hurley, Jack Delaney and Kyle Yoxall put the Black ‘n’Amber ar an mbóthar ceart! Na Gaeil battled back in the 2nd half but their attacks were bravely repulsed with ferocious defending by the Austin Stack Club boys. Some fine Rock points were scored to keep the hosts at arms’ length; a healthy look was kept on the scoreboard and a well-deserved and outstanding win was recorded. Bua de dhá chúl! This was one of the most complete team performances of the year and, undoubtedly, Man-of-the-Match was Noah Reidy who gave a stellar performance at centre back; his outstanding performance included a well-taken point….cúilín gleoite. Thanks to Na Gaeil for a good contest. Thanks to the referee for his handling of the game. An fhoireann ómrach (amber): Seán McCannon; Joe O’Halloran, Oisín Cotter, Diarmuid Hennessy; Alex Dafoor, Noah Reidy, Alex O’Flaherty; Oran O’Donoghue, Karol Kowalczyk; Nathan Hurley, Nathan O’Connor, Gearóid Corcoran; Séamus Keenan, Kyle Yoxall, Jack Delaney; Luke O’Connor, Jayden O’Dowd, Eliot Caljea, Conor Hanafin. FAOI 15: (i) Our U15s started their Central League Division 1 campaign with a convincing away victory over An Ghaeltacht in Gallarus on Wednesday evening last. We started slowly and led by 0-5 at half-time. Our boys continued their good form in the second half and ran out convincing winners in the end….5-17 to 0-9. Maith sibh, a bhuachaillí na Carraige! An fhoireann bhuacach: Oliver Lata, Liam O’Connell, Fionnán Ryan, Alex Tuohy, Naode Derege, Gavin Ó Cathasaigh, Aodhán Horgan, Max Maszorek, Gabriel Maszorek, Leon O’Connor, Rory Ó Loingsigh, Ronan Carroll, Ryan O’Driscoll, Cormac Bastible, Jake Carmody, Brian Kavanagh, Jayden Moriarty, Paddy Lucid, Jack Diggin. (ii) On Friday evening our Central League Division 5 footballers started their campaign with a hard-fought and narrow close win against Castleisland Desmonds in Oileán Ciarraí. We began the first half slowly and were 2-0 down shortly after throw-in. However, following a few positional switches our boys got a foothold in the game and we led…3-4 to 2-3…at half-time. A brilliant comeback! Castleisland made their comeback attempt in the second half but our stalwart defence kept us in the game. Our lads worked hard and repelled many dangerous attacks. Two more goals from our boys in the second half put us in firm control of the match. Castleisland Desmonds attacked repeatedly but could not get past our stonewall defence. We were victorious! Final score….AdeS: 5-9; Castleisland Desmonds: 3-4. Special thanks to our U13 boys, Hawlie Cotter, Darragh Lyons and Barry Laide, who played really well on the occasion. *******************************************

Boxing accounts for more than half of all the medals Ireland have won across 29 Olympic games.

It is without question our most successful Olympic sport and the legendary champions our small country has produced, from Dan Donnelly, the first Irish Heavyweight Champ in 1815, to our newest European Champions in 2022, Lisa O Rourke and Niamh Fay, are a huge source of national pride for us all.

Yet for all our success, Irish boxing in recent years has revealed a darker side in terms of poor governance and lack of camaraderie, highlighted at the Tokyo Olympics with the resignation of Bernard Dunne, from his position as High Performance Unit Director.

Olympic gold medal winner Kellie Harrington described the complex political scenario in the IABA at the time as “a s**t show” that “needs to be sorted out because the only people missing out are the boxers.”

With admirable intention, to finally put an end to this damaging infighting, Minister for Sport, Jack Chambers sought to pressure the IABA to change its ways, to fall in line or to be penalised by funding cuts, eventually amounting to full funding cuts, if change was not implemented.

It was made clear to the people of Ireland that government plans were not going to affect the High Performance athletes, our current and future champions.

However, there can be no denying that the grassroots boxing clubs around the country are going to suffer from this fallout between the Minister and the IABA.

This cannot have anything but a knock on effect on the High Performance Unit in time as the next batch of HP athletes are expected to come from small local clubs such as our own here in Tralee.

As our own coach Pat O Shea says, if you don’t plant the seed, nothing can grow in the garden.

A good deal of funding may come to the IABA from government and Sport Ireland, but unfortunately not a lot of that trickles down into local clubs, who like ourselves, are obliged to constantly go into the community to raise funds to keep our doors open to the young people of the town.

We must fight relentlessly for every penny we can get.

In last week’s local papers, our neighbouring club Cashen Vale BC, Ballybunion, which has trained 14 national champions, admitted that they face an uncertain future in 2023 due to financial pressure.

Was this suffering of local community boxing clubs anticipated by the Minister?

Captain of the Irish Olympic Boxing team at the 2012 Olympics in London, Darren O Neill, commented, “essentially it is the sport and the boxers who are going to lose out.”

Clubs like ours have very little say in the politics of the IABA but will definitely be getting the short end of the stick if this conflict is not resolved.

Last Sunday, little local clubs from around the country did exercise their vote, we chose to fight, and we chose to change, a new board has been elected in the IABA.

The Minister can hopefully see this as a step towards change, give incoming president, Gerry O Mahoney, and the new board time to clean up the face of Irish boxing before cutting funding and potentially relegating our national boxing pride into old photos and history books.

Welcoming the news, Fine Gael Kerry TD Brendan Griffin said: “Many Irish companies have successfully made the digital transition in recent years and developed their online capability to sell their goods and services online.

Tralee Rowing Club Squad Competes At National Championships

.
Aoife O’Connell competing in Tullamore.

By Jane Boyle, Tralee Rowing Club PRO

Last weekend TRC enjoyed a successful trip to National Championships, we were thrilled with the results and the increasing depth in our squad.

We are very proud of all our participants. We are a small, young club and despite the challenges of recent seasons, we find it really reassuring that we are continuing to progress, achieving notable results and developing rowers and squads who are able to compete at a national level.

Our most successful crews were Sean Morris in the MJ161x, and Georgina Kennedy, Aoife O’Connell, Catherine Steward, Sadhbh Cadogan, and Rosie Giles in the WJ164x+.

Continued below…

.

They both won their heats in the time trials and went on to place an agonising 4th, mere fractions of a second from medal positions.

Irish rowing is in a really good place at the moment, the standard is high and highly competitive, to make any impact takes a minimum of a 46 weeks a year commitment from the junior rowers, their coaches, club volunteers and their families.

Sean Morris, Daragh Morris, Billy Giles, Oisin Lawlor competing in Tullamore.

We have a considerable number of young people who are going to bed early and getting up early, in dark and wet conditions through out the Autumn, Winter and Spring and saying to their peers and families “I can’t, I have training”. That training is relentless, using all of your body, 6 days a week.

Their reward is literally their day in the sun when regatta season comes around, unmatched camaraderie, as crews support each other, emotionally and practically, working together to get boats on and off the water and roaring encouragement for whatever crew is on the water.

Common current negative generalisations about young people most certainly do not apply to our members, our finalists and our entire championship squad: Sean Morris, Georgina Kennedy, Aoife O’Connell, Catherine Steward, Sadhbh Cadogan, Rosie Giles, Daragh Morris, Billy Giles, Oisin Lawlor, Jared O’Briain, Amy Darcy, Alex Maritz, Millie Hayes, David Lynch, Niall McCarthy (Jared O’Briain rowed as well as coxed) a number of our rowers participated in two or three events.

Thanks to Daragh Morris who took Conall MacThreinfir’s seats in 2 crews and get well soon to Conall who took ill on Thursday.

The adults of our club were ably represented by Paula Moloney who raced in the WClub1x, Paula generally rows in the masters category, so the 2k distance was twice her usual challenge, well done Paula!

This weekend followed on from our success at the Rowing Ireland 1KM Classic the week before when club member Daragh Morris came 1st in MJ14x1 category and James Morris & Jim Breen took 1st place in MM8x

The rowers should all be proud of the season they put in and we look forward to seeing them building on it next season.

We are lucky to have a big and diverse coaching team and they deserve much credit. The best is most definitely yet to come!
