Council To Continue Trial Of One-Way System On Slea Head Drive

.

KERRY County Council, in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland, is continuing the trialling a clockwise traffic management system for visitors on Slea Head Drive from Friday, July 29th to Monday 22nd August.

During this trial period, the Council asks that larger vehicles travel in a clockwise direction around Slea Head, starting at Dingle town, then on to Ventry, Slea Head, Coumeenole, Dunquin, Ballyferriter, Muríoch, Feohanagh and back to Dingle.

The trial, taking place on this occasion during the peak visitor season, follows a similar trial which took place earlier this year and will inform future considerations on traffic management in the area.

Continued below…

.

A Kerry County Council employee will be positioned each day from 10.30 am to 4.00pm at Coumeenole to encourage larger vehicles that are driving in the incorrect direction to follow the correct route.

Visitors will be encouraged to follow the recommended route from the outset resulting in more time to relax and enjoy the magnificent views, attractions, history and culture of this beautiful part of Kerry.

Local access will be maintained as normal. Extensive directional signage advising of the clockwise system will be erected locally.

Congratulations: Sunday July 24th 2022 will go down in the history books as the day that Kerry won their 38th senior All-Ireland title.

However for Na Gaeil people at home and abroad it will forever be remembered as an unbelievable occasion with three of our own clubmen playing a huge part in it. Diarmuid, Jack and Stefan have created history by winning for themselves the first senior GAA All-Ireland medals ever won by Na Gaeil players.

What can we say about these 3 lads other than all 3 of them are fantastic role models for our young players and they deserved their win yesterday.

We are so proud of them and delighted that their hard work and sacrifices over the past few years have finally been rewarded. What an incredibly special day for Na Gaeil club.

Community Games U10 football: Last Wednesday night our St. Brendan’s Oakpark U10 football team got the better of Castleisland by 2 point, after extra time, to win the County Final. Well done to everyone associated with the team, especially the Na Gaeil boys involved.

U11 boys: What a wonderful day we had in Fitzgerald Stadium in Munster U11 Blitz. We performed excellently in all 3 of our games and after it finished all the lads got a tour of the stadium with former Kerry captain Fionn Fitzgerald. We want to thank all the parents who came to support the lads and to Bernie for providing the photos. Also a word of thanks to John and Mick for entering us in it.

U15 boys: Last Wednesday night, July 20th, our u15s hosted Annascaul/Lispole in their second game of the Kellihers Toyota Central Region competition. We were missing a number of players who were away on holidays and a few lads who were gone to the Gaeltacht so we were delighted to get 8 lads from the u13 team. Annascaul/Lispole opened the scoring with a point which was cancelled out by a fine point from Dara Callaghan. 3 further points from Liam Cooper, Dara Morris and Danny Kingston left Na Gaeil ahead by 4 points to 1 after 10 minutes. Annascaul/Lispole added a point to keep them in touch but Danny Kingston added 1-1 along with a point from our centre-forward Brian Heaphy to put Na Gaeil ahead by 7 points.

Again Annascaul/Lispole added a point but another goal by Danny Kingston stretched our lead to 9 points with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Both teams added 3 points each before a goal from a penalty for Annascaul/Lispole reduced our lead at halftime to 6 points. An early second half point for Annascaul/Lispole narrowed the gap to 5 points but Na Gaeil replied with one of their own.

Then came Annascaul /Lispole’s second goal and for a few moments the game was in the melting pot with us leading by 2-10 to 2-7. But that was as close as it got and Na Gaeil added points from Liam Cooper (2), Daragh Morris, Danny Kingston (2), Jacob Dryzmala, Jake Coffey and Brian Heaphy to run out comfortable winners on a final score of Na Gaeil 2-18, Annascaul/Lispole 2-9.

We have 2 back-games to refix in this competition so we may have a game next week against Ardfert. Team: Iarla Hanafin, Jack Kelly, Jeaic Canty, Karl Cronin, Gearóid Moynihan, Ruadhan Clifford, Cillian Griffin, Daragh Morris, Liam Cooper, Jake Coffey, Brian Heaphy, Daragh Callaghan, Philip McEneaney, Danny Kingston, Ruairí Lacey, Jacob Dryzmala, Maurice Costello & David Buckley.

UNDER 7 BOYS & GIRLS

There was a break from training Sunday morning so everyone could support the Kerry boys in the all-Ireland final in Croke Park

Training continues next Sunday at 10:30am and new members are more than welcome!

U8/U10/GIRLS

Training took a break Sunday due to the All-Ireland final so we will resume the following week.

Training days and times will be sent out to parents in due course.

U12 Girls

Training continued for our 12 girls this week and we had two excellent sessions with the squad.

We have increased the intensity of the sessions and added in a lot more ball work in to the training and the girls have really responded.

We are still waiting for our fixtures for the upcoming Tralee Town league and we are hopeful that the extra work in training will pay dividends at the end of the competition.

We will train this week on Wednesday from 7-8 and again on Sunday morning at midday and we look forward to seeing everyone.

U13 Girls

Our U13 Girls played outstanding football on Saturday and made it through to the 2022 Sandra Keane memorial shield final which was hosted at our complex In Ballyseedy.

The tournament, which is run by the North Kerry ladies football board, has been a massive success since it was first initiated in 2013

We played with incredible heart and commitment and some of our scores on the day were a joy to watch.

We beat Ballymac in a very entertaining semi-final after emerging from a really strong group which contained  Abbeydorney, Firies and Dingle.

We faced CastleIsland Desmonds in the final and when the full-time whistle blew both teams couldn’t be separated.

It was decided that the game would be decided by a golden score and when we lost the coin toss and had to face a really strong breeze it made it very difficult.

Congratulations to CastleIsland Desmonds.

It was a great experience for our U13s and coaches on the day,  Sharon, Karen, Denis and Brian are extremely proud of you all.

U 14 girls who faced Dr Crokes on Thursday evening in Castleisland.

U14 GIRLS

Our u14 girls were defeated by Crokes this evening in a lively Div5 A final in Castleisland.
We were game from throw in and started well but you can never keep the Crokes down too long and at half time we found ourselves down by 3 points with a lot of damage done by their number 9 whose foraging runs kept our defence on our toes.

We fought well with some lovely points and our goals from Kerri Falvey and two goals from the sprightly Ciara Harris at corner forward ensured Crokes didn’t have it all their own way.

Goalie Grace Regan was a colossus saving a penalty and keeping some attacks at bay frustrating the opposition and ensuring we were still in the game.

We found ourselves two points down with time up and a last second free 30 yards out unfortunately went wide and the ref blew the whistle.
Unlucky girls but what a never say die performance.

Well done to you and all thanks to the coaches and parents who came to support and of course Dr. Crokes GAA for a sporting game of football
We will be back!!!!! Up the Mitchels

Tralee Parnells GAA Club News

.

U7 Hurling
The under 7’s hosted Kilmoyley in Caherslee on Monday of last week for a few competitive and fun filled matches.

The conditions were not too unlike the hurling final in Croke Park as the sun blazed down on the teams.  Despite many of our players attending and having a fantastic 1st day of the Tralee Parnells Summer camp they battled on and were great young ambassadors for the blue and white of Parnells.

Congratulations to this week’s players of the week, Liam Brick and Rían Quinn well done boys.

The Tralee Parnells U8s after a busy morning of Camogie as they attended a blitz hosted by Killard

U8 Camogie
Our U8 squad enjoyed a fantastic Saturday morning of camogie as Abbeykillix hosted a blitz. It was a warm morning and the players were scheduled with four matches. Our girls held their own and really progressed in each match.

It was fantastic to see the girls really enjoying themselves.  Thank you to John Diggins for refereeing and to all the parents who travelled.

U10 Camogie
Our U10 camogie squad also had a busy morning on Saturday as they took part in the blitz hosted at Crotta O’Neills.

The coaches were delighted with the fantastic effort put in by the girls.  They met some tough opposition but all the hard work at training is certainly paying off as they challenged for every ball.

Claire Murphy from Expose Beauthy Salon presenting a set of sponsored jersyes for our U12 hurlers to Dermot Reen juvenile chairperson

U12 Camogie
On Wednesday evening our U12’s Blues played Sliabh Luchra in the County League. There was some great Camogie played by both sides.

Although Parnells came out winners, Sliabh Luchra showed some serious skill so keep up the great work. Thanks to Sliabh Luchra for providing the pitch, all the parents for travelling and to John Ross for refereeing the game.

Minor Camogie
It was another busy evening for Tralee Parnells on Tuesday the 19th of July in Caherslee, with both pitches being put to full use.

Under 14 Camogie and under 11 hurling had training, under 13 boys hosted Ballyduff and the Intermediate hurling panel had a preparation session for the upcoming quarter final match against Kilgarvan.

The Tralee Parnells Minor Camogie team who lost out to Causeway in the first round of the league

As these crowds finally dispersed after 8pm, the minor Camogie team took to the field to open their 2022 competitive season.  Parnells fielded a young team relying on a lot of our under 16s, but they well held their own in the opening encounters.

Causeway were able to take points more easily but Parnells had plenty of attacks of their own and got the ball into the danger area on more than one occasion.

Our defence were well tested as we expected, but Jessica was strong between the posts, well supported by Ciara, Gráinne, Orla and Labhaoise and between them they repulsed several threating attacks at close range.

The ball distribution by Jessica was first rate and the outfield players worked well with her, making runs and finding space outside to receive her targeted puck outs.

Róise played a stalwart role at center back, breaking down lots of opposition attack play and surging forward repeatedly to set up play for our attack and get herself in scoring range.

Alice was strong in midfield and her partner Lana was tireless in picking up dirty ball and turning possession into attack.

Eugenie, Caoilinn, Grace, Abbie, Rachel, Kate and Emma were on plenty of ball and helped keep the pressure on the Causeway defence.  At half time Causeway held a narrow lead, while Parnells were left to ponder squandered opportunities close in.

After the interval Causeway continued to be better able to take points, but the work rate and teamwork of our midfield and attack finally paid off, in two green flags raised in scrambles in the small square, Emma claimed at least one of the goals, we will have to review the video footage to see who can get credit for the other one.

But in fairness, from all areas of the pitch, credit must go to the team as a whole who battled for each other and kept going right to the end.  In the closing stages Causeway cleared another scrambled ball off the line and Parnells were left to wonder if they could have snatched a late draw, given the final scoreline of 1-8 to 2-2 in favour of Causeway.

Our next minor match will be in 2 weeks on Tue 02-Aug, when Tralee Parnells travel to play Killarney minors  away, in the 2nd round.

Parnells Minor team vs Causeway: Róise O’Donnell, Cíara Casey, Eugenie Kerins, Alice O’Connell, Gráinne Diggin, Labhaoise Mansfield, Grace Hamilton, Lana O’Connell, Abbie Canty, Rachel Sargent, Orla Leahy, Jessica O’Loughlin, Kate O Loughlin, Emma Dunican, Caoilinn Hickey.

The Tralee Parnells Panel who lost out to Kilgarvan in the Intermediate Championship Quarter Final

Intermediate Hurling
The quarter final of the intermediate hurling championship took place last Wednesday between Tralee Parnells and Kilgarvan. It was the first meeting of the sides since their semi-final clash in 2020, and Kilgarvan were looking for revenge. The home side, however, were not going to lie over for the game, and Parnells were passionate from the start.

John Mark Foley opened the scoring for Kilgarvan, but this was answered by a Gearóid O Doherty free.

The sides swapped scores again and it was clear that this would be a tight affair. Kilgarvan got the big wins in the first half however, with two goals, coming from Gearóid Fennessy, and Richard O Sullivan. Tralee Parnells also lost Enda O Conner to a red card, which was a massive blow.

The scoreline at half time read Tralee Parnells: 0-9 Kilgarven: 2-8.

The second half would prove to be a passionate and entertaining 30 minutes. The two sides swapped scores again before Kilgarvan were presented with another goal chance, but were denied the three points by an excellent save from Mark Ryall.

Soon after, Ryall pulled off a brilliant body save, and another a few minutes later. Parnells added a few points to the board from Darragh Reen and Gearóid O Doherty before Mark Ryall pulled off another great save.

Kilgarvan, stubbornly, finally beat the Parnells goalkeeper and dispatched a third goal. Despite Parnells’ best efforts, Kilgarvan emerged victorious on a scoreline of 3-13 to 0-16.

Thank you
The club are very grateful to Claire Murphy from Expose beauty Salon, Mounthawk who has generously sponsored a new set of jerseys for our U12 hurlers.  Fostering links with our local businesses is of mutual benefit to all. Thank you again to Claire.

A great turnout with lots of fun at the Tralee Parnells Summer Camp

Summer Camp
Our summer camp last week was a huge success.  With the weather on our side for most of the week it was our largest summer camp to date with a very encouraging number of non registered children signing up to try hurling and camogie.

Thank you to our fabulous camp coaches who looked after the children during the week.  Thank you also to David Brick for organising the camp.

Lotto
The lotto draw took place on Monday 18th July. The numbers drawn were 15, 16, 21,22.  The was no winner of the jackpot while the winners of the two luck dip prizes of €25 were Doreen O’Sullivan and Marnie O’Sullivan.

The draw for two tickets for the football final took place on Tuesday evening in Caherslee where Marnie O’Sullivan’s luck continued as she won the tickets.  You can play our lotto via the Clubforce app or follow the link at https://traleeparnells.gaa.ie. All support is greatly appreciated, thank you.

Volunteer Michael Ryle was a member 1st Battalion, Kerry No 1 Brigade of the Irish Republican Army who died in action on the 5th August 1922. He was from Pembroke Street, Tralee, where his parents, William and Ellen, owned a Public House and Grocery Shop.

A white wooden cross is positioned in his memory at Ballycarty, Ballyseedy. Michael Ryle is also named on the Roll of Honour on the Ballyseedy Memorial Monument and on the Headstone at the Republican grave at Rath Cemetery, Tralee.

Michael Ryle was a brother of Tom Ryle, an uncle of Billy Ryle and a great granduncle of Louis Ryle. After the Civil War, Michael’s father forgave his son’s killers and regularly remarked that the Rock Street GAA Club had an important role to play in reuniting men who had taken up arms against each other.

A laurel wreath will be laid at the White Cross at Ballycarty, Ballyseedy at 7.30pm on Monday, 1st August. The highlight of the commemoration will be a lecture by Dr Tim Horgan, Historian & Author, at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 2nd August at Kerry County Library, Tralee Branch about Volunteer Michael Ryle and the troubled times in which he lived and died.

ALL IRELAND CHAMPIONS: Well done to Kerry, winning their 38th All Ireland SF title last Sunday.  And congratulations also to Joseph O’Connor, Jack O’Shea, Greg Horan and Dylan Casey who were part of the Kerry panel during the season.

Great to see Joe on the Hogan Stand lifting the Cup with Seán O’Shea. And it was Joe and Seán who were involved in the closing action of the game – Joe being fouled and Seán converting the resultant free to give them a four points cushion at that stage.

KERRY LADIES SF: And let us wish the Kerry Ladies, with our own Darragh Long at the helm, the best of luck on next Sunday as they take on  Meath in the All Ireland Ladies Final – seeking their first title since 1993, the year when Marina Barry Walsh won her 10th and last All Ireland Medal – a record that has still not been surpassed in any Senior grade – only Henry Shefflin has equaled it with the Kilkenny Senior Hurlers.

CO. LEAGUE: And well done also to Dingle who are this season’s Co. League (Div.1) champions – their 2nd title in a row and their 3rd in total. We still head the Roll of Honours list with 11 titles with Crokes on 10 and Laune Rangers with 9. Rahillys are on 4th spot with 5 titles and now Dingle come up to 5th position with their 3 titles. Two other teams – Desmonds and Milltown-Castlemaine – have two titles each with nine other teams having won the League on one occasion.

BRIAN CODY: And what can one say about Brian Cody who retired at the week-end after 24 seasons in charge of the Kilkenny Senior Hurlers, winning 11 All Irelands, 18 Leinster titles and 10 National Hurling Leagues. Only our own Dr. Eamon O’Sullivan would surpass him in longetivity. Dr. Eamon was in charge of Kerry from 1924 to 1964 but not involved in all the Finals during that period. He managed Kerry in eight of the 15 titles they won during that 40 year period. That 1964 Final was the only final he lost – and who were the victors that day – Galway.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: At local level we now turn our attention to the Co. Club Championship which gets underway on the week-end after next. In the Senior Club eight teams are contesting in two groups of four. Dingle, Kenmare, Na Gaeil and Spa are in Group A, while ourselves, Dr. Crokes, Kerins O’Rahillys and Templenoe are in Group B. Each team will have three games each at a neutral venue, a home venue and an away venue, with the top two teams in each Group going through to the semi finals.

In the opening round on next Sunday week (7th August) we travel to a neutral venue (the Legion pitch at Derreen) to play Templenoe with a 1pm start. In round 2 we have a home game against Kerins O’Rahillys and in the third and final round we are away to Dr. Crokes.

B FOOTBALL: Kerins O’Rahillys 3-15; Austin Stacks 1-9.

This was our first game in this three-round  Tralee/St. Brendans League played in Strand Rd on this Tuesday evening (19th July). The home side had the aid of a very strong breeze in the first half  and took full advantage of same when they went in at half time with a 1-10 to 0-3 score. Our three points came from Cian Dillane, Donagh McKivergan (a super effort) and Shane Bastible.

Even though we had that strong breeze in our favour in the second half Rahillys just outscored again by 2-5 to 1-6. Donagh McKivergan was again on target in this half with three points (two from frees), Team captain, Paul Barrett and Conor Myers had a point each from play, and Shane Bastible scoring a goal and a point, his goal one of the scores of the season, from a 25m free.

Five of our players who lined out were making their first start of the season, Paul Galvin, Cathal O’Reilly, Tom O’Farrell, Seán Dukes and great to see Shane Durran back in action after a number of years away, and all five played as if they never were away.

Team; Ben Quilter, Ruairí O’Connell, David Burke, Paul Galvin, Cian Dillane (0-1), Donagh McMahon,  Cathal O’Reilly, Dara Barry Walsh, Paul Barrett (Capt) (0-1), Tom O’Farrell, Shane Bastible (1-2), Dean Rusk, Conor Myers (0-1), Donagh McKivergan (0-4 – two frees), Daniel O’Rourke.

Subs used: Seán Dukes (27m), Shane Durran (41m).

In our two remaining postponed rounds we have an away game against Ballymac and a home game againstJohn Mitchels on dates yet to be refixed as we write.

CONGRATULATIONS: And on the B Team let us send congratulations and best wishes to former Club Footballer and current B Team Mentor, Dale Counihan and Ashling O’Mahony who got married last Friday.

MINOR FOOTBALL: After going down by the narrowest of margins to Kenmare (0-13 to 0-12) in the opening round last week we now have a home game against St. Kierans on this Tuesday evening (26th July) with the third and final round away to Dr. Crokes on next Monday (1st August). Throw-in for all games is at 7pm.

THESE are nights to savour.

The Kerry team came home last night and they’ll never forget the reception they received in Tralee!

Thousands of green and gold-clad supporters lined Castle Street, all the way up around Denny Street to The Ashe Memorial Hall to welcome their heroes who arrived in a double-decker, open-topped bus.

It wasn’t just Tralee people in attendance of course, with many from north and west Kerry travelling to the capital to enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Mayor of Tralee Mikey Sheehy welcomed the team to the stage while Alan Cantwell, MC for the evening, introduced the team and interviewed Joe O’Connor, Sean O’Shea and Jack O’Connor.

Jack said he never thought he would see crowds to rival the 1997 homecoming, but felt last night may have even surpassed it.

He said the reception would never be forgotten by himself, the coaching staff and the players and they would feed off it in their efforts next year in their bid to keep Sam in the county.

Jack also made special mention of the contribution of Tralee clubs who supplied nine players to the panel.

The team then left the stage and headed off the Killarney for another reception. We were on Denny Street last night to capture the colour and the noise from the loyal fans. Scroll down for photos…
