Kerry Maintains Ireland’s Leading Sustainable Tourism Destination In Top 30 Global Index

KERRY has maintained it’s #13 ranking within the Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS-Index) Top 30, positioning the county as Ireland’s leading Sustainable Tourism destination, and number six in Europe out of 65 destinations, across the world.

The GDS-Index is the world’s leading sustainability performance benchmarking and improvement programme, designed to make business and leisure tourism industry more sustainable.

Kerry Convention Bureau (KCB) collaborated closely with both the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation (KTIF) and Kerry County Council (KCC) on its 2022 submission, which included an update to the Kerry County Sustainable Tourism Strategy 2022-2025, designed to provide an ambitious framework from which the county can accelerate performance and place sustainability at the heart of its tourism recovery and growth plans.

Scoring 82.4% out of a possible 100%, up 8.5% on last year, Kerry’s sustainability performance was evaluated based on the county’s environmental strategy and infrastructure, social sustainability performance, industry supplier support and KCB’s strategies and initiatives.

Spearheaded by KCB and supported by Failte Ireland, Kerry first participated in the GDS Index in 2018, and has consistently improved upon its performance each year.

In an timely example of the innovative sustainability endeavours being undertaken within Kerry, it was also announced today that Kerry Convention Bureau member The Killarney Park have been awarded Gold in the Decarbonising Travel & Tourism category at this week’s WTM Responsible Tourism Awards.

Working closely in partnership with Fáilte Ireland’s Business Tourism unit Meet In Ireland, KCB fosters the promotion and growth of Kerry as an iconic and diverse destination for business tourism events including national and international conventions, meetings and incentives.

JERH O’Donoghue from Rathmore is celebrating this week after being named Kerry’s Most Inspirational Person at this year’s Gala Retail Inspiration Awards with Virgin Media.

Jerh’s extensive and inspirational work in the charity sector within the local community earned him the title of Inspirational Person in this year’s awards.

Established four years ago to celebrate individuals who work to create better communities with their selfless acts and inspirational deeds, Gala Retail awarded inspirational people from every county in Ireland, naming county inspirational people who were each gifted €1,000 in Ireland Hotel vouchers.

Jerh really impressed the judges for his work in the local community and is a worthy winner of the county award for his inspirational efforts.

Social Action Group (SAG) Rathmore was founded by Jerh in 1975 to give young people an opportunity to become involved in community work and to make a difference to the lives of people throughout the community and beyond. Jerh has unselfishly dedicated over 47 years with constant energy and exuberance.

Under Jerh’s guidance, SAG has evolved over the years and has been recognised as a leader in providing community-based healthcare and support with 35 homes, a day care centre with a meals on wheels and laundry service for older people and others in need.

From a huge volume of nominations, 26 county heroes were crowned. Noreen Murphy, from Bantry in County Cork, was named as the Overall Inspirational Person of the Year for her services to mental health with the establishment of Lisheen’s House Suicide Prevention Charity.

Gala Retail has gifted €26,000 of prizes to the winners with the 26 county winners being awarded with €1000 hotel getaways across Ireland.

Tralee Library To Host Talks On Researching Family History For Free

TRALEE and Listowel Libraries will host a series of talks this month from historian Tom Dillon.

The talks in Tralee focus on ‘researching your family history for free and take place on Thursday, November 17 at 7pm and the following Thursday, November 24 at 7pm.

He will host give a talk on ‘Placenames Of Listowel And Its Vicinity’ at Listowel Library on Friday, November 18 at 11am and on ‘Folklore And Local History’ the following Friday, November 25 at 11am.

These talks are free and everyone is welcome.

MTU To Receive €3.45m In Transformation Funding

MUNSTER Technological University (MTU) will receive €3.45 million in Transformation Funding it was announced today.

This tranche of funding will be used by MTU in key areas such as digital infrastructure, building capacity in research, and in improving governance and systems integration.

Minister for Education and Kerry T.D Norma Foley welcomed today’s announcement saying; “This vital investment will ensure that MTU continues to expand key research projects and invest in new digital technologies, providing a state-of-the-art, third level experience for students.

“The funding underlines Government’s continued commitment to investing in the higher education sector and provides Technological Universities like MTU with the financial capacity to modernise and grow.”
