SCÓR na nÓG: Would any young Rock player or supporter like to represent The Rock by singing in Scór na nÓg (Faoi 17)….just one song? Or as part of a five-person (boys or girls) group of singers who’d like to try their luck as a ballad group….two songs? Or being in a grúpa ceoil? Or as one of four in a table quiz competition? Come on, Rock!

COLÁISTÍ….ROCK REPS IN COLLEGE GAMES: (i) Best wishes to the Mercy Mounthawk boys who, after a good victory over Coláiste Choilm, Baile an Chollaigh, in the Corn Uí Mhuirí (U19) competition will face Coláiste na Sceilge (‘Sceilg’) ar an 7ú Nollaig (Wednesday), de réir an sceidil. The Rock boys on the panel: Mícheál Tansley (báireoir), Jack Ó Murchú, Ben Ó Murchú, Daniel Ó Ciarba, Cillian Litchfield, Paidí Ó Laighin, Noah Townsend, Liam Ó Cearmada. (S.de Rís)

(ii) Good luck to the Tralee CBS boys in their next game in the Munster Colleges Senior Football competition (Faoi 19). They’ve had a good win against a very challenging Pobalscoil Shliabh Luachra (An Ráth Mhór) team. Their next encounter is expected to take place in the next few weeks. A lán traenála le déanamh idir an dá linn! The Austin Stack Club players involved: Colm de Brún (captaen), Éanna Ó Cathail, Ryan Ó Drisceoil and substitute Rónán Ó Cearúill. Also on the panel: Josh Ó Loingsigh, Damien Ó hÓgáin, Tomás Derege, Seán Ó Muimhneacháin agus Donnacha Mac an tSaoir. (A.Mhic Lochlainn)

(iii) Neidín proved impressive opponents against ár ngaiscígh Dé Luain (14ú) i Lios Treighe. The Gaelcholáiste’s foireann Faoi 16½ were kitted and booted on an agreeably wintry morning and this grit to leave the toasty classrooms for a fresh breezy morning outside was indication of their unquenchable will as they headed into a tough tie. They battled hard as the first score went their way.

While each of the The Rock stars, Messrs Marc agus Rory Ó Loinsigh agus Gavin Ó Cathasaigh, shone brightly and although the teams remained at stalemate at half-time, muintir Neidín outpaced ár laochra Gael fhéin towards the middle of the second half. Unfortunately, despite contesting the match until the last minute, ní raibh rith an ráis lenár mbuachaillí.

After the final whistle they shook hands with worthy Kenmare opponents en route, no doubt, to continue a quality run of form. As for buachaillí an choláiste Ghaelaigh…..they have sprung back from their marginal loss i rith na seachtaine scoile and are more than ready to hit the ground running as their next ties approach. I bhfad uainn an t-olc agus lá eile ag an bPaorach! (D.Ó Loinsigh)

(iv) ‘Well done’ to Mercy Mounthawk on their recent excellent victory over Meánscoil an Chroí Ró-Naofa, Clonakilty. Mercy Mounthawk: 3-9; Clonakilty: 1-7. The Rock players who were part of the win: Róise Ní Dhónaill (captaen), Grace Reidy, Mary Moore, Lucy O’Connor, Holly O’Brien, Grace Ní Luasaigh and Rachel Mulgrew. Bainisteoirí: Amanda Ní Bhrosnacháin agus Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh. (R.Mulgrew)

FAOI 15: Seaimpíní Faoi 15 Bhordcheantair Thrá Lí agus Naomh Breandán 2022: Olibhéar Lata; Aodhán Ó hArgáin, Bao Ó Foghlú, Tomás Ó Conaill; Liam Ó Conaill, Alex Ób Tuathaigh, Leon Ó Conchúir; Ben Ó Murchú, Rónán Ó Cearúil (captaen); Naode Derege, Gavin Ó Cathasaigh, Cormac de Bastábla; Ruairí Ó Loinsigh, Ryan O’Drisceoil, Jake Cearmada; Adam Mac Seáin, Brian Caomhánach, Jack Ó Duigín, Jayden Ó Muircheartaigh, Jack Ó Seanacháin. bhuadar ar Bhaile Mhic Eileagóid sa chraobhchluiche. A KERRY-BASED Clean Coasts group won an Ocean Hero Special Achievement Award this afternoon.

Clean Coasts hosted the Ocean Hero Awards Ceremony and Ocean Talks at Number 6 Kildare Street, in Dublin, to celebrate and thank the groups, individuals, communities, and businesses who, throughout the year, have done outstanding work to protect their local coastline and environment.

Maharees Conservation Association CLG were nominated both in the Beach Clean Award category and the Special Achievement Award and they won the latter.

Continued below…

.

This award is a celebration of an individual or group who have achieved something spectacular this year, whether it’s reaching a major milestone, undertaking an impressive project or finding a way to engage a new cohort of people in the protection of our coasts.

The group has been carrying out a series of marram grass planting events in their area to stabilise the sand dunes damaged by Atlantic storms and have been raising awareness and educating the public on the importance on sand dunes and why they need to be protected.

During the ceremony, the work of Fenit Coast Conservation, who were nominated for a Local Action Award, was also showcased.

This group strives to raise awareness of the value and vulnerabilities of the coastline and encourages best practices that will leave this precious natural environment intact for future generations.

Each year, the Ocean Hero Awards honour the invaluable contribution Clean Coasts volunteers, groups and communities have made towards conserving our spectacular coastline. The awards, originally called the ‘Clean Coasts Merit Awards’, were conceived in 2006, consisting then of only one category, ‘The Clean Coasts Group of the Year’.

This year, Clean Coasts has chosen 7 dedicated categories with a total of 28 groups, organisations and individuals shortlisted for the title of Ocean Hero within each category.

Representatives from Banna Rescue and the Irish Heart Foundation receiving cheques at Tralee Boxing Club.

Tralee Boxing Club, Monavalley would like to thank Manor West retail park firstly for allowing us to hold our spinathon enabling us to reach our goal of purchasing a community defibrillator and to give back to two very worthy causes.

Banna Sea Rescue and The Irish Heart foundation received cheques from Tralee Boxing club on Saturday night, after the success of the recent fundraising Spinathon.

Tralee Boxing Club chose to donate to the two worthy charities, and this resulted in both charities receiving  €1,000 euros each.

The fundraising event took place at the start of November, after coach Shamey O Mahoney offered to spin on his bike for 10 hours straight, to raise money for a community defibrillator which would benefit both the club and other organisations in Monavalley, where the club is situated.

On November the 5th Shamey pedalled his bike non-stop for 10 hours in Manor West shopping centre, along with support from club volunteers, his granddaughter Amelia and David and Paudie Clifford. The money he raised will buy the defibrilator and train club members how to use the life saving equipment.

We are very grateful to everyone for making the event so successful, especially to Banna rescue and The Irish Heart foundation for the work they did in the background.

We would also like to thank The Meadowlands Hotel for donating the main  prize of a fabulous night in their hotel with breakfast included.

None of this would have worked if we hadn’t received so much support from Tralee town itself, and for that, Tralee Boxing Club are sincerely grateful. We are proud to be apart of such a fantastic town.

November Handicap 2022

The first in county competition of the season took place Sunday last the 20th of November.  It was great to see such a big entry in each of the 5 divisions.

It was a doubles competition with a mixed final. So the winning pair of the mens and womens doubles were split up and a mixed final was played to determine the winners.

There was just over 100 entries in total on the day and the hall was buzzing from start to finish. A long day but a very successful and well run competition was enjoyed by all.

We also had a yonex shop open on the day and many purchased new gear, rackets and everything in between while watching a brilliant display of badminton.

Results:

Division 5:

This was the biggest draw of the day with a big entry in both the mens and the womens doubles. Both sides played a round robin style tournament playing every other pair.

Laura O’Connor (Ballybunion) and her partner Catherina Murphy (Killarney) won the ladies doubles and Jomy Joy (Ballyheighue) and Lorcan Briscoe (Ballybunion) won the mens doubles. It was then a mixed final and Laura O’Connor and Jomy John won the final on a score line of 21-9 21-13.

Division 4:

Another good entry here with some brilliant games played. In the end, Caroline Lemass  (Killarney) and her partner Susan O’Connell (Iveragh) won the ladies side and Mike Reardon (Listowel) and partner Paul Thomas (Tralee) in the mixed final Mike Reardon and Caroline Lemass came out on top 21-16 21-8.

Division 3:

Division 3 was very closely fought out with only just the bare minimum separating the winners on both the mens and womens doubles.

Paula O’Sullivan (Ballyheighue) and Bridget McCarthy (Moyvane) came out the winners after some very good close doubles games and it was the same on the mens side where Kieran Crehan (Killarney) and Paul Hayes (Listowel) won their side.

It was a very close mixed final with Kieran Crehan and Bridget McCarthy winning out on a score line of 21-17 and 23-21.

Divisor 2+1:

In division 1 and 2 the entry was small was small so in each side of the doubles everyone played with each other and the 2 men with the highest scores came out 1 side as did the 2 women on the other side.

Aidan McCarthy(Kingdom Castleisland) and Ethan Tritschler (Listowel) had the highest scores in the mens and Edel Kenny (Kingdom Castleisland) and Helen Browne (Moyvane) the ladies.

After a brilliant and entertaining final Ethan Tritschler and Helen Browne came out the victors in a very closely contested game 21-18 21-19.

A big thank you to all of those that helped the day to run smoothly and thanks to all the players for playing, it was great to see such a good entry on the day.

We go again next Sunday with a mixed doubles competition that you get drawn a partner. We hope to see you all there again next Sunday in Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre.

STATUTORY and public bodies in Kerry are urging members of the public to be prepared for the winter months and to be ‘Winter Ready.’

The HSE, Kerry County Council and An Garda Síochána are encouraging households to make preparations for adverse weather and to ensure that neighbours reach out to older or vulnerable households at this time to ensure that they are prepared for any potential winter weather.

The Kerry agencies are working closely with their counterparts in Cork as part of the Cork and Kerry Interagency Emergency Management Office coordination of the response to winter emergencies.

Continued below…

.

The local organisations are drawing the attention of the public to the www.winterready.ie website which has useful tips and information for members of the public, including advice on how to avoid trips and falls, and how to make sure your home and family are prepared for winter.

The HSE Department of Public Health for the region is encouraging the public to protect the health service this winter by taking up both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines when they are offered. Walk-in clinics are available for anyone who hasn’t received the full course of COVID-19 vaccines, and certain groups are now being offered booster vaccines. The flu vaccine is also available at the moment free of charge to certain groups, including healthcare workers, those aged over 65, and children aged between 2 and 17.

The firefighters of Cork City, Cork County, and Kerry County Fire Services ask that householders check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working, and if they’re not already installed, to get them installed.

Local statutory bodies will be promoting important messages over the coming weeks around issues like road safety, preparing the home, health and wellbeing, advice for older people, and details of important emergency contacts.

All of the local agencies including the Health Service Executive, An Garda Síochána, Kerry Fire Service, Kerry Civil Defence and Kerry County Council work closely together to ensure a coordinated response to any emergencies which may arise over the winter months.
