Over 400 Patients Waiting On Trolleys At UHK In January

.

JANUARY saw 411 patients waiting on trolleys in University Hospital Kerry, the highest number for the month since the same month in 2020.

Back in January 2020 there were 418 people waiting on trolleys at UHK, the highest since records began back in 2006.

The monthly Trolleywatch figures compiled by the Irish Nurses and Midwives organisation shows that the number of patients on trolleys in hospitals around the country was 11,289 in January.

Continued below…

.

INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said: “A lack of adequate planning has put unnecessary stress on nurses and the patients they are trying to provide care for throughout the month of January. The number of patients on trolleys in wards outside our emergency departments have been unacceptably high. This practice should not be allowed to continue as a measure to try take pressure off our emergency departments.

“According to two recent opinion polls, over 75% of people would not visit an Emergency Department. The strategy of telling people to not attend hospital will have knock-on effects across the health service for months to come.

We cannot continue to accept the wait until things get unbearably bad approach before an attempt is made to lessen the pressure on our public hospital system. Nurses and their patients deserve better than this.”

Speaking to Jerry O’Sullivan on Radio Kerry’s ‘Kerry Today’ programme this morning, Deputy Griffin, who has been a TD since 2011, said he wants to spend more time with his wife and two sons.

Continued below…

.

Deputy Griffin informed party members and local councillors yesterday of his intention not to run in the next election.

He thanked party members for their support and advice over the years and hoped they will understand the decision he has made. He said he will continue to work for the party in putting together a team to retain the party’s seat in the county.

(ii) Banteer was the Saturday afternoon hotspot for our gaiscígh and their tense supporters as foireann Faoi 19 an Ghaelcholáiste lined out against formidable Hazelwood College (Coláiste na Collchoille) opposition at the state-of-the-art new 4G pitch.

This quarter-final tie was a ‘must win’ for the Gaelcholáiste and they began as they meant to go on with a sublime point from Gavin Ó Caoimh about five minutes into the first half. From there the Gaelcholáiste lads managed to see out the first half in relative calm, in composed form, with Cian Ó Duilleáin ruling midfield by wrestling high balls from his opponent.

They entered an tarna leath with two points over the Hazelwood boys, who returned to the Astro field in efficient form. Highlights from the nail-biting second half included some incredible wide-angle scores from Stacach Gavin Ó Cathasaigh, ably provided by his brother Luke.

Our laochra refused to let two late goals reduce their grip on the game and managed to see out this entertaining tie with a final cracking score from an tUasal Ó Cathasaigh.

Celebratory pitch invaders included Rory Ó Loinsigh and the laochra look forward to a fine homecoming on Monday morning when they will, no doubt, be endlessly praised by their cairde scoile. Coláiste Naomh Pádraig, Castleisland, remain their final opponents sa chraobh chinniúnach; tá an t-am agus an suíomh fós le socrú.

Bígí linn when fixtures are confirmed: these dynamic and talented laochra, who clinched this hard-fought tie with their skill, have more than earned your support! Comhghairdeas ó chroí libh! An bhfeicfear Corn Sheáin Uí Mhurchú i dTobar Mhaigh Dor i gceann cúpla seachtain?

(iii) The Tralee CBS (Faoi 16½) boys are due to face Coláiste Bhréanainn in the final of the Dunloe Cup (Kerry colleges) competition. Táimid ag tnúth go mór leis an gcluiche! Future Challenger Jan 29th-

Meet 3 of the Future Challenger series took place Sunday, Jan 29th in UL, providing another great opportunity for our younger swimmers to compete across a number of events with clubs throughout Munster.

Many thanks to our Coaching team of Nigel Collins, Ciara Fields & Gerard Pierse, Team Managers Melissa Costello & Kerry Long, Tim O’Connell, top table, Pat McTigue ,referee, volunteers and supporting families .

Coach Report from Nigel Collins

Overall the swimmers were from Junior B and the development squad, with close on 5 months of training down each swimmer recorded strong new times for their chosen events, all other swimmers made PB’s by considerable margins from previous times, it was delightful to see some new hopefuls breaking through with impressive times for what was for some their first real Gala, so the Kingdom has lots to be hopeful for.

We were supported on deck by a fantastic team who all worked tirelessly to ensure that our swimmers enjoyed the day, our traveling parent contingent could be well heard from the gallery, it would seem that all our swimmers had a great day in the water and on deck with strong friendships evident throughout.

Lixnaw Native Leanne Looks Forward To Performing In ‘Don Pasquale’ On Siamsa Stage

.
Leanne Fitzgerald and Ben Escorio in Don Pasquale. Photo: Pat Redmond

A LIXNAW native says she’s looking forward to coming back to performing on the Siamsa stage on when the acclaimed ‘Don Pasquale’ comes to Tralee on February 11.

Mezzo-soprano Leanne Fitzgerald has her family to credit for her artistic upbringing. Having an Irish dancing master for a grandmother and a keen local theatre actor for a father, she grew up around creativity and was always the most enthusiastic singer in her primary school classes.

At the age of eleven, she took up the violin at the Kerry School of Music, and soon after began attending Tralee Stage School where she stayed for five years. At sixteen, she began singing lessons with Sharon Reidy in Abbeydorney which ignited her passion for opera.

Continued below…

.

Leanne went on to complete a degree in Music Performance at the TU Dublin Conservatory of Music and Drama, where she landed her first opera role in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld.

She made her professional debut soon after graduating, in Adams’ Nixon in China with Wide Open Opera in 2014, recalling the vast scale of the production as something which stood out to her.

After doing multiple productions with both Wide Open Opera and Opera Theatre Company (which later merged to become Irish National Opera), Leanne took a break from her opera career to join Chamber Choir Ireland, Ireland’s flagship choral ensemble with whom she sang for six years.

Performing at home in Kerry is something Leanne has enjoyed throughout her life, calling it“an absolute joy”.

Knowing how keen Kerry audiences are in supporting the arts, she cites this reason for the recent growth of Irish audiences coming to Kerry to perform in the likes of Siamsa Tíre, St John’s Theatre Listowel, Dingle, Cahersiveen and Killarney.

Continued below…

.

Leanne’s first experience performing in Siamsa Tíre was at the tender age of eleven, playing Aoife Flanagan in John B Keane’s The Field, alongside Mick Lally and Mary McEvoy.

Although she has enjoyed many performances in Siamsa Tíre with the Tralee Stage School, Tralee Musical Society and others, her performance in Irish National Opera’s Don Pasquale on Saturday 11 February will mark her professional opera debut, something she feels isincredibly special to mark in her home county.

“To have a milestone like this in my career at home is just amazing. I’m really looking forward to seeing some familiar faces in the audience!”

Leanne is confident that Kerry audiences will love Don Pasquale, which received a five star review from the Irish Times and enjoyed sold out performances in December.

“I think audiences were kind of surprised at how funny it was when they came to see it last year. Our director Orpha Phelan did such a wonderful job creating this little world of madness for us to live in!”

If you’re a first-time goer or a regular opera patron, she’s confident that there’s something for everyone in this timeless comedy.

“Leave any preconceived notions ofwhat an opera should look like at the door…this production breaks all the rules!”

Don’t miss Leanne in Irish National Opera production of Donizetti’s sparkling DonPasquale, coming to Siamsa Tíre on Saturday 11 February. Tickets available by clicking here.

Registration 2023

Now that some of our teams have resumed training and others will be resuming shortly players and coaches please register your membership of the Club for 2023.

One of the benefits of registering as a playing member of the GAA or LGFA via the Club is that in the event of an injury sustained playing or training resulting in medical expenses it may be possible to claim a level of refund from the GAA or LGFA Injury Benefit Fund. However any player seeking to benefit from the Injury Benefit Fund must be a registered member of the GAA or LGFA on Foireann at the time of injury

The respective Injury Benefit Funds are self-funded entirely from the GAA and LGFA funds with no outside involvement. The Injury Funds are not an insurance scheme. The Injury Funds are set up to assist members with some reimbursement for medical expenses incurred due to an injury sustained playing Gaelic football.

The respective Injury Benefit Funds do not seek to compensate fully for injuries sustained but to supplement other Schemes such as Personal Accident or Health Insurance. The GAA and LGFA Schemes only provide cover for unrecoverable losses up to the limits specified under the respective Schemes. More details can be viewed onhttps://learning.gaa.ie/InjuryFund or https://ladiesgaelic.ie/resources/injury-fund/

Foireann Mobile App

A Foireann mobile app is now available, and this is the only official membership and communications app for GAA, LGFA & Camogie clubs. The app is available for both iOS (via the Apple Store) and Android devices (via Google Play).

The Foireann Mobile app makes it even easier to manage your Foireann profile and all the ways you interact with the Club. We ask all members to download the app as it will make it easier to manage membership, update contact details and keep up to date with team activities .

The Foireann membership and communications app is fully integrated with the Foireann membership system – members can log in on the app with their existing Foireann account to see upcoming events which includes event details for anyone in your Family. The app also puts news, fixtures and results in your pocket so you can stay up to date with the most important and relevant information.

Foireann is the GAA system used by clubs to manage membership and it allows members to register for membership and pay online using the Mobile app or the Foireann system at www.foireann.ie

Austin Stacks v Ballymac – First Round – Tralee/St Brendan’s Board District League

Our Minor team played in the first round of the Tralee/St Brendan’s Board District league versus Austin Stacks in our first game of the new season in Connolly Park in ideal January conditions on Sunday.

The opening 15 minutes was competitive with both sides knocking away the off-season cobwebs. It was the hosts who had the lead at Half-Time on a scoreline of 0-5 to 0-2

In the second half, this encounter, was very much nip and tuck, with either side capable of claiming the win. Austin Stacks got a vital goal mid-way through the second half but this was soon cancelled out by a fine finish for the visitors from Jack Slattery. Micheal Savage had his scoring boots on with a total of 5 points.

It was Austin Stack who just about got over the line with a final score Austin Stacks 1-09 Ballymac 1-07. Well done to our boys for the effort and application shown.

Reports from AGM Continued

U7 GIRLS & BOYS Excellent progress again this year by the under 7 boys and girls. We had 28 players who attended in total with us averaging 18 players on each Sunday. We had some exciting matches against clubs like Austin Stacks, Na Gael, Firies, Killarney Legion and topped with a game against Dr Crokes in Fitzgerald stadium which was memorable day for kids, parents & coaches. A fantastic day was had by all when we were blessed to have the Clifford brothers bring Sam Maguire to the Ballymac pitch and gave us a lot of their valuable time to take pictures and sign jerseys etc. A big thank you to the club for organizing this. A huge thanks to the parents for bringing their kids each week as it was a pleasure to see all those smiles from the players at the end of training sessions and match days. Well done to all the coaches for their hard work and commitment.

U9 BOYS Our u 9 Boys commenced Training on Sunday 20th of March under the Guidance of Coaches Donal Rahilly Eddie o Connell Jerry Sugrue and Brian Curran. We trained at the Main pitch on Sunday mornings between 11-12 until the recent early change of 10-11. Under the banner GIVE RESPECT GET RESPECT, our players were encouraged to Respect each other, Respect the Coaches and Respect officials of the Game and this proved a huge success, thanks to all players.

Our older players further enhanced their skills by playing some games with the under 11 s and this option worked well as the boys made great progress during the year. We played a lot of mini games to make sure each player touched the Ball regularly improving their touch and improving their skill. In April we started to play Go Games, which the players really enjoyed.

We played Go Games against Na Gaeil, John Mitchell’s, Kerins o Rahilly’s, Currow, Listry, killorglin and Ardfert. One of the highlights of the year was the visit of Sam Maguire, and two present Kerry team players David & Paudie Clifford to the academy. Thanks to both players for making the effort to meet our players, much appreciated. We travelled to Churchill to play in the local Blitz in early September. 6 Another highlight of the year was the trip to Fitzgerald stadium to play in the local Dr Crokes Blitz. Our boys really enjoyed this experience and one that they will cherish for some time.

In October we travelled to mallow Sports Complex to Compete in the Munster GAA u 9 Go Games Blitz. We played 3 Games against Douglas (2) and Cecil town, our boys really enjoyed the occasion. Setting off on the Kerins O’Rahillys 10k and 5k Run on Sunday morning. Photo by Dermot Crean

10k Run :

A fine bright spring morning brought the crowds to Strand Road on Sunday to participate in the 5/10k run in honour of the late Tom Begley.

There was a great atmosphere as the 300+ people gathered before the 11.00 o’clock start, with many families present to savour the occasion.

It was delightful to hear the cúpla focal ring out as the event was well supported by Tom’s many friends from back west.

We would like to thank everyone who took part, to Bomber and David for presenting the medals and the hard working committee who helped to make this such an enjoyable event.

Victory Social:

Our upcoming victory social on Sat night 4th March in Ballyroe Hotel  has now been fully booked out and a waiting list for tickets has been created.

The event sold out in record time, not surprising given the great support the team has enjoyed throughout the year.

For those lucky enough to have procured tickets, we will be in touch with you regarding collection/payment etc over the coming weeks – there will be further updates on social media in due course.

Seniors:

David Moran announced his intercounty retirement on Monday last,  bringing the curtain down on a fifteen year Kerry career that ended with 3 Celtic crosses.

David made 53 championship appearances for Kerry scoring 1-23 whilst racking up 58 league appearances and amassing 3-41 in total. He played in 9 Munster senior finals culminating in a 100% win record.

David was highly lauded by a myriad of journalists & commentators following the announcement,  with a recurring theme highlighting his high fielding, resilience to come back from two cruciate injuries, plus his exemplary conduct on the field of play.

We wish David the best of luck in his future endeavours and look forward to seeing him in the blue and white of Strand Road over the coming years.

Kerry

Micheal Quirke was on media duties as Kerry took on Donegal in Ballybofey on Sunday in the first defence of their title.

The inclement weather with strong wind and rain was to Kerry’s backs in the first half but after building up a six point lead, 1-06 to 0-03 Kerry lost their way from there to half time, failing to score and conceding a further 3 points.

The second half was nip and tuck all the way and the game seemed to be heading for a draw until Donegal captain, Paddy McBrearty scored the winning point in the 74th minute.

Monaghan are next up for the Kingdom next week in Fitzgerald Stadium where throw-in is @ 1.30 pm – Monaghan are also pointless, having lost their opening game to Armagh on a scoreline of 1-14 to 1-12.

Limerick, with Mark Fitzgerald as part of their management team, made the long journey to Owenbeg on Sat in their opening national league game and came away empty handed against the Ulster champions and last years All Ireland semi finalists; Derry look to have targeted a place in Division 1 for next year and proved much too good on the day for the newly promoted side.

Schools

Mercy Mounthawk exited this year’s Corn Uí Mhuiri when losing out on a final scoreline of 2-16 to 0-13 to St Brendans, Killarney on Sat. Mounthawk were probably the better side in the first half but a defensive lapse just before half time saw them concede a soft goal and they were 4 points adrift at the break.

The second half saw them halve the deficit at 1-09 to 0-10 points but a scoring spurt by St Brendans when scoring 1-05 without reply put the game to bed.

Tomás Kennedy, though wearing 14, lined out at midfield and can be happy with his day’s work while a forward line oft times starved of ball, saw Darragh O’Connor point from play in the first half. Cian Moran and Jake Hoare were also part of the squad.

Kerry U-20s received a bye to this year’s Munster semi final when the draw was made over the weekend; Kerry will play the winners of Tipperary/Clare on Easter Monday, April 10th with the final fixed for April 24th.

Maurice Horan & Co will have their charges in action on the weekend of the 10th Feb when they play Kildare in the John Kerins trophy with a fixture against Dublin yet to be announced.

Killarney Forestry Rally Launched In Castleisland

.

KILLARNEY and District Motor Club launched its Castleisland-based Killarney Forestry Rally at the River Island Hotel in the town centre on Sunday evening.

For the second year in a row, the event will be run to raise funds for Irish Community Air Ambulance Southern Region.

Last year Killarney and District Motor Club presented €58,293 to the air ambulance and proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to this vital community service too.

.

Competitors and rally fans can look forward to a challenging route in the Mullagherick Mountain, Fornane and Mount Eagle areas on Sunday, February 19. Clerk of the Course for this year’s event is Adrian Cronin opened Sunday’s launch.

He outlined the hard work the Killarney and District Motor Club crew are doing behind the scenes to organise the first major motorsport event in the county this year.

“I have to say a huge thank you to the team behind me,” he told the large audience present. “The roads are in great condition, there are motorways in some parts of the country not as good as the roads in the forest right now.

Several local dignitaries and public representatives also attended the launch.

Local councillor Charlie Farrelly outlined the importance of bringing such a large event to Castleisland in the late winter.

“This is of huge benefit to the town,” he said. “Last year, we worked out, brought in excess of 500,000 on Saturday night and Sunday. We extend a big Ceid Mile Failte to all visitors over the rally weekend.”

Cllrs Bobby O’Connell is a former rally diver and one-time member of Killarney and District Motor Club.

“It is great to have the rally back in town,” said the Mayor of the Castleisland Municipal District. “We used to have rallies in Mount Eagle and Rockchapel and I soldiered with a lot of the members of Killarney and District Motor Club during my time as a driver and a navigator. This event is something we want to support.”

Deputy Michael Healy-Rae TD paid tribute to the event sponsors, local businessmen Cyril Wharton of Wharton Tool Hire and Niall Murphy of Castleisland Tyre Centre.

“There is so much involved in running these events, without sponsors, events do not just fall out of the sky,” he said.

Sponsor Cyril Wharton will drive a Subaru Impreza in the event.

“This is our second year supporting the event, I see all the hard work that the club is doing and it is a lot easier to compete than it is on the other side of the fence. I commend Adrian Cronin for stepping up to clerk the event.

It is also Castleisland Tyre Centre’s second time acting as the joint-event sponsor.

“I have been following rallying all my life. There is a huge effort in running this event and myself and Cyril are only two small cogs in a very big wheel. As a local business, we are delighted to get behind this event.”

Donie Lucey represented the Irish Community Air Ambulance at the launch.

“We are delighted that this rally is supporting the Irish Community Air Ambulance once again,” said the charity’s chief fundraiser.

Club chairman Thomas Randles concluded the formal aspects of the launch.

He said: “The club is delighted to play a role in supporting this vital community service. Adrian might be leading this rally but there is a huge team involved and they have pulled together and done a lot of work in a short time.”

Entries for the rally opened last Thursday night and already over 40 crews have confirmed that they will compete in the first gravel rally of the year in Ireland.

The rally is Round One of the Motorsport Ireland  Forest Rally Championship, the Motorsport Ireland Junior Rally Series, and Moriarty’s Central Car Sales Kingdom of Kerry Championship.

REPORT: Kerry Get Over The Line Despite Late Mayo Revival

.

Michael Gallagher reports on the Kerry ladies’ victory over Mayo on Saturday afternoon…

Kerry 3-5

Mayo 0-13

The old adage that goals win games proved to be true at the Connacht Centre of Excellence when three second-half strikes powered Kerry to their second win in succession in Division 1 of the Lidl NFL.

Goals from Síofra O’Shea, Lorraine Scanlon and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh got Kerry over the line despite a powerful Mayo revival.

Amazingly, the goals were the only Kerry scores in a second half where Mayo dominated. The Munster women were the better team for long periods the first half but only took a one-point lead to the break, 0-5 to 0-4, after a Mayo resurgence before half time.

Continued below…

.

The Kerry forwards looked much more potent from play with Hannah O’Donoghue and Siofra O’Shea to the fore, but the home defenders were ferocious.

Lisa Cafferky was the shining light in the Mayo attack, but the home side failed to score form play in the opening half, relying on Maria Cannon and Shauna Howley for pointed frees.

Kerry might have had a goal in the opening minute, but Erica McGlynn’s shot was saved brilliantly by Mayo netminder Laura Brennan as Kerry began the game impressively.

Midfielder Niamh Carmody was busy early on for the guests, however, Mayo powered back into it with Clodagh McManamon, Roisin Flynn and Danielle Caldwell to the fore.

The Kerry goals in the third quarter looked to have sealed victory and they looked comfortable before Mayo introduced substitute Sinead Walsh and the momentum changed completely.

The home side powered forward and with Tara Needham, Walsh and Rachel Kearns prominent the gap closed significantly. However, late Mayo, misses and Kerry resilience secured the Munster women’s second win in a row and Mayo’s second defeat.

Scorers – Kerry: S O’Shea 1-1, L Scanlon and L Ní Mhuircheartaigh 1-0 each, A O’Connell, N Ní Chonchuir, H O’Donoghue and E McGlynn 0-1 each.

Mayo: S Howley 0-5f, M Cannon 0-4f, S Walsh 0-3, R Kearns 0-1.

Subs: K Cronin for Broderick, A Galvin for McGlynn, L Ní Mhuircheartaigh for Ní Chonchúir, F Tagney for Evans, M O’Connell for Carmody, L Galvin for Costello, R Dwyer for O’Shea.

Save The Green Committee To Mark 100 Years Of Tralee Town Park

.

THE Tralee Save The Green Committee are planning to mark the 100th anniversary of Tralee Town Park this Sunday.

“In June, 1922, Tralee Urban District Council decided to purchase The Green in Tralee,” said Tommy Collins of Save The Green. “The purpose was to build some houses for the townspeople and also to provide an open recreation area.

“The deeds were lodged in the Deeds Office in Dublin on February 5, 1923 at 12.35pm. In 1923 there were 118 acres, there are 35 acres presently in 2023,” he said.

Continued below…

.

Tralee Save The Green Committee, which was founded in 1969, will assemble at the Denny St. Gates on this Sunday, February 5th at 12 noon to mark the event. All are welcome to mark the centenary.

The park is situated on the site of the old castle demesne which was built by the Denny family in the 17th and 18th Century. In 1826, the castle was demolished to make way for the construction of Denny Street.

Edward Denny subsequently landscaped the area remaining from the castle by planting trees, laying down several gravel paths and constructing an ornamental grotto. A gatekeeper’s lodge was also built on ‘The Green’. In 1889, Edward died and the Denny family sold “The Green” to Henry Clements-Finnerty.

Around this time ‘The Green’ was offered to the Town Commissioners but they refused to purchase the park. Subsequently, fencing and gates were erected around the park’s perimeter (still seen to this day) and a charge to the public for admission into the park was introduced. In 1922, ‘The Green’ was sold to Tralee Urban District Council and it officially became Tralee Town Park.

‘Ballyseedy’ To Be Screened At Kerry Civil War Conference

.

A DRAMATISED account of one of the darkest days of the Civil War in Kerry will be screened at the Siamsa Tíre Theatre in Tralee in February as part of the programme of events for the three-day Kerry Civil War Conference, which marks the centenary of the conflict.

‘Ballyseedy’, which was written and presented by the well-known broadcaster and journalist, Pat Butler, will be shown during the conference on Friday, February 24 at 8pm.

The dramatised documentary tells the story of the execution of eight anti-Treaty IRA prisoners near Tralee on 7 March 1923 as the war in Kerry reached new depths of violence and barbarity.

Continued below…

.

It was first broadcast on RTÉ One television in 1997 and repeated in March 1998 and has not been shown publicly since then.

The upcoming screening has been arranged by the organisers of the Kerry Civil War Conference which runs from February 23-25 and which features over twenty historians, experts and academics in discussion about the war in Kerry and beyond and its legacy a century later, as well as other commemorative events.

The conference is supported by the Department of Culture under the Decade of Centenaries Programme for 2023.

Before the screening on February 24, Pat Butler will be interviewed by Jerry O’Sullivan of Radio Kerry about how and why he researched and produced the programme, and why it is so important as a historical resource. Admission to the event is free of charge but pre-booking is required through the Siamsa Tíre Box Office.

Owen O’Shea, one of the organisers of the Kerry Civil War Conference, said that the forthcoming conference is an appropriate time to present the 90-minute docudrama.

“We are extremely grateful to RTÉ for agreeing to share the programme with us and to Pat Butler who spent so many years researching and writing the piece. As the only televisual representation of events at Ballyseedy, it is a hugely important resource which contains interviews with eyewitnesses who are no longer with us,” he said.

“Ballyseedy is synonymous with the darkest days of the Civil War in Kerry and Pat’s work sets the events of 7 March 1923 in the context of the trip mine explosion at Knocknagoshel the previous night and the wider story of how and why the war in Kerry became so visceral and violent,” he added.

Pat Butler said that the programme had its origins in the smoke-infused front room of his parents’ house  in Cork, in 1957, when, as a nine-year-old, he heard whispered references to ‘the birds eating the flesh off the trees at Ballyseedy Wood’.

“No one would explain to me what that meant. Forty years later, dark deeds hinted at in an early draft of Niall C. Harrington’s Civil War memoir, A Kerry Landing, sparked my old curiosity. Six years of research in Kerry led to the Ballyseedy documentary. The film explores the dark night of the national soul – the slaughter that was the Civil War in Kerry. The national silence about the Irish Civil War was finally broken,” Pat explained.

The screening of Ballyseedy takes place on Friday, 24 February at 8.00pm at Siamsa Tíre in Tralee. While admission to the event is free, tickets must be pre-booked through the Siamsa Tíre box office on www.siamsatire.com or on 066 7123055, or at www.kerrycivilwarconference.ie.

THE annual Kerins O’Rahillys 10k and 5k Run was very well supported again on Sunday with over 350 registered to take part in the event.

Sam Maguire was present at the club, along with former Kerry stars who were delighted to support the race which this year remembered club stalwart Tom Begley who passed away last year.

“I want to thanks everyone for supporting the run which is always a great social event for the club,” said Chairman Haulie Kerins. “We’re honouring one of the finest gentlemen that we’ve known here in Kerins O’Rahillys and one of the best volunteers we’ve ever had in Tom Begley.”

.

“Whether it was selling lotto tickets, maintenance, fundraising, training juveniles, Tom did it all and never wanted recognition. But we’re delighted today to honour his contribution to the club for over 40 years,” said Haulie.

The run also kicks off another year for Kerins O’Rahillys after a fantastic 2022.

“It was a great year for the club winning the county senior club and Munster club championships. We’ve a social now in Ballyroe in March which is sold-out with 320 people going, so that will be a great night to celebrate,” said Haulie.

The 10k race saw Denis Hegarty finish fastest in 33:40, followed by Derek Griffin in 34:10 and Karl Lenihan in 34:48. Daniel O’Connor won the 5k in 18:05, followed by Tiarnan Lynch in 18:36 and Aaron Horgan in third in 18:58. All results can be found by clicking here. Scroll down for photos…

Kingdom Veteran Vintage And Veteran Car Club Revs Up For Year Of Events

.

The 2023 Kingdom Veteran, Vintage and Classic Car Club committee from left to right: Martina Molyneaux (Webmaster); Joe O’Sullivan (Vice chairman, Chris Foley (Social Media); Willie McElligott (Chairman), Garrett Foley (Secretary); Alan Fitzell (Youth Officer) and Geroge Glover ( Joint Treasurer) [absent from photo joint treasurer Aine Doyle].
THE Kingdom, Veteran Vintage and Classic Car Club is preparing for a busy year on the roads of Kerry.

As well as a full programme of Cars n Coffee meet-ups and one-day runs, the biggest historic car club in Kerry will also run three very different but hugely important flagship events. Details of the club’s programme of events were announced at the club’s Annual General Meeting in Tralee on January 29.

Blennerville-based Willie McElligott was selected as the club’s new chairman, and he replaces Tony Hehir who has been in the hot seat since 2017.

Continued below…

.

“It is an honour, but I have big boots to fill taking over from Tony,” said the incoming chairman. “I am looking forward to it, my main interests are cars and people and they go hand in hand in this club.”

Francie Cantillon was announced as the club’s president – he has given 44 loyal years of service to the organisation. The club’s 44th annual Ring of Kerry Run will remember club founder PJ O’Riordan.

Willie McElligott was elected chairman of the Kingdom Veteran, Vintage and Classic Car Club at its Annual General Meeting on Sunday.

The Ardfert man passed away in 2020 during the height of pandemic-related restrictions so the club was unable to honour the contribution PJ made to the classic car movement, not just locally, but nationally too.

The June 9/10 event will be known as the PJ O’Riordan Remembrance Ring of Kerry Run and will start and finish in Kenmare – a new venue for the club’s early summer run but a regular halt in the Autumn Run.

“We as a club will be celebrating PJ’s life, times and cars while recognising the fact that the KVVCCC would not exist today without the huge work that was done by PJ, his wife Noreen and family,” said club secretary Garrett Foley.

“PJ was a founding member, Chairman, and President of the KVVCCC for a period that spanned 41 years. This is our way of remembering such an important person in the vintage scene in Kerry, Ireland and beyond.”

Noreen was made an honorary life member of the club at Sunday’s AGM.

In July, the club in association with the Irish Vintage and Classic Car Club will mark the 120th anniversary of the Ballyfinnane Hillclimb.

The July 1903 event is hugely important to motoring historians and motorsport enthusiasts all over the country and beyond and was the first closed-road motorsport event in Kerry.

On July 15, 1903, Charles Rolls, who later went on to become a founder of the Rolls Royce Motor Company won the County Kerry Cup over a 500-yard course near the mid-Kerry village.

In 1993 the KVVCCC erected a monument to Rolls on the finish line to mark the 90th anniversary of the historic event and since then the location has been a popular stopping-off point for visiting car clubs.

The KVVCCC will run a classic car run over the original course on the morning of July 15. A few hours later members of the Brass Brigade arm of the Irish Vintage and Classic Car Club will follow.

The Brass Brigade hold annual rallies all over Ireland but specifically chose Kerry for this year’s event as club members wanted to mark the 120th anniversary of the famous hillclimb.

Up to forty cars, from the early 1900s to the 1930s are expected in Tralee on the weekend of July 15/16. After visiting the Rolls Monument in Ballyfinnane both clubs will enjoy a tour of West Kerry before a Gala Dinner Celebration in the Ballyroe Hotel.

The KVVCC’s Autumn Run will take place on October 14 and will be once again based in Kenmare and a road-run along the Beara Peninsula is currently in the planning stages.

“The six Fishery Harbour Centres are critical infrastructure for our seafood industry,” said the Minister. “Approximately 90% of all fish landings into Ireland come through these facilities. This demonstrates how successful these Harbours have become as economic hubs for the Seafood industry.

“The continuous development of the infrastructure in these Harbours has been critical to the fishing fleet and the land-based seafood processing industry. These Harbours are the economic development drivers for the largely peripheral coastal communities and hinterlands where they are located. The Government is committed to continuing to develop these Harbours to underpin our seafood industry and drive on economic development in these areas.”

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors hopes of making the last eight of Super League remain intact after an incredible one point win away to Emporium Cork Basketball in the Ballincollig Community School on Saturday afternoon.

It came right down to the wire as Warriors had just given up the lead with John Dawson laying up and adding the extra to leave the hosts one point up with 2 seconds on the clock.

However Daniel Jokubaitis launched a stunning NFL quarter-back style length of the court pass to find Eoin Quigley who duly obliged to lay up the winner and after trailing by as much as 14 points at one stage snatch a most unlikely but fully deserved 88-87 win.

The opening quarter saw Dre Jackson open the scoring but the hosts took the early initiative with John Dawson, Jose Jiminez Gonzales and Adrian O’Sullivan combining to ease the hosts ahead but threes from Daniel Jokubaitis and Jackson turned the tide and in response to a Gonzales floated effort, Jokubaitis arced in a cracking three to see the Warriors lead 19-16 at quarter time.

The hosts shot out of the traps in the second quarter to stun the Warriors as they fired in 20 points through Keelan Cairns, Dylan Corkery, Gonzales and Adrian O’Sullivan by the midway point of the quarter.

The Warriors resistance was limited to a Jackson score and two free throws from Jokubaitis. Keelan Cairns added from the line and inside to push the lead to 12 but back to back threes from Jokubaitis and Jackson kept the Warriors in touch.

John Dawson added from either side of the arc but Dre Jackson replied in kind and at the half time buzzer Emporium Cork Basketball led by 47-37.

The Warriors needed a quick start to the third and Eoin Quigley duly obliged by driving to the board for back to back three point plays.

Jokubaitis then took advantage of a foul outside the arc and with only 90 seconds of the quarter played the hosts had coughed up an incredible 4 fouls as their discipline fell asunder as the visitors cut the half time lead to 47-43.

Emporium Cork continued to short circuit with Keelan Cairns and Kieran O’Sullivan receiving technical fouls as the Warriors kept chipping away at the lead.

However four trips to the free throw line for the hosts restored their half time lead but Matija Jokic then lit up with a 10 point cameo to single-handedly wipe the advantage out.

Kieran and Ronan O’Sullivan and Dawson combined to edge Ballincollig back in front but Jokubaitis got an open look from beyond the arc to cut the gap to 66-63 at three quarter time.

The Warriors stormed into the final quarter and new signing Rich Dunham marked his Super League debut with scores from inside and out and when Jokic did likewise the visitors took the lead for the first time since the opening score of the game.

Emporium Cork’s response was immediate with two threes from Adrian O’Sullivan but a Fergal O’Sullivan special kept the Warriors one point ahead.

A double from Pau Cami Galera wrestled the lead back for Ballincollig but when Dre Jackson twice weaved his way to the board and Jokic hit a belter of a three from the top of the arc the Warriors led 85-81.

However, back to back three point plays from Gonzales followed by Dawson with just 2 seconds on the clock looked like the game winning scores.

However, Jokubaitis inbounded the ball with a perfect length of the court pass to find Eoin Quigley who laid up to snatch the dramatic winner and seal a priceless 88-87 win.

Scorers:

Emporium Cork Basketball: Adrian O’Sullivan 20, John Dawson 16, Jose Jiminez Gonzales 14

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors: Dre Jackson 26, Matija Jokic 22, Daniel Jokubaitis 20

Next up for the Warriors is a another tough road trip as they face their arch local rivals Flexachem KCYMS at the Killorglin Community Centre next Saturday night in what promises to be another cracking local derby, tip off in Killorglin is 7.15pm.

IT’S been a long time coming but Cillard Camogie Club organised their first social on Saturday night in The Rose Hotel.

The club was founded back in 2006 as a juvenile club, but they’ve all grown up to be seniors now since 2021 so it decided to hold a social get-together to celebrate the achievements of their excellent hurlers.

The club had a phenomenal 2022 winning titles at every grade so there was a lot to celebrate. The minor teams of 2020 and 2022 and the junior winners of the league and championship were there to be presented with their medals by the club’s founding members Margaret Walsh, Nora Mai Mahin and Susan Curran.

A great night then with a delicious meal and DJ Big Jim supplying the tunes to keep the atmosphere going into the night. Scroll down for photos…

KERRY GAA have announced their latest alternative jersey.

As with the current jersey, it has the iconic Kerry crest as the centrepiece to the design. With the introduction of the colours of navy and blue there is a further nod to traditionalism – the colours of Munster.

In keeping with the home jersey which has individual elements of Kerry’s artistry, history, flora and fauna emblazoned on the jersey, this alternative strip focusses on the stag – a symbol synonymous with Kerry.

.

As is always the case, Kerry Group are responsible for the sponsorship of this new jersey. The Kingdom will wear the jersey for the first time when they take on Donegal today in Round 1 of the Allianz Football League.

The jersey will be available in store in the Kerry GAA Store in Killarney and online through the GAA Store and through O’Neills from early February.
