Fundraising Page To Help Terminally Ill Woman In Abbeydorney

A GOFUNDME page has been set up for a Kerry mother-of-three who was diagnosed with terminal cancer last year.

Lisa Broderick (47) lives in The Cloisters, Abbeydorney with two of her three children; Holly (13) and Paddy (11) who are dependent on her in every way. Her older daughter Siún (23) is currently working and living in Dublin.

Lisa, originally from Lisanearla just outside Tralee, previously underwent treatment for breast cancer in 2019 and was relieved when she got the all-clear in 2020.

However, in June last year Lisa was devastated to learn her cancer had not only returned but is terminal and she’s been given just five years to live.

She had been suffering from shoulder and rib pain for months but put it down to driving for her job at the time. Following a visit to the GP, she went for an MRI and then a CT scan which revealed that she had two tumours in her liver.

“I was completely and utterly devastated,” Lisa said. “I went back to work quite soon after getting the all clear. There was a lot of driving involved and I’d take painkillers for the pain. Never once did I think something like this.”

Speaking about the future and her children she said that “the reality is I won’t see them in their 20s”.

“It’s very tough on everyone. We’re a very close unit here, it’s heart-breaking for them.”

Lisa has had no choice but to leave her full-time job due to her many appointments and coping with the side effects that come with the treatment to prolong her life.

Her goal is to raise enough funds to be able to afford days out with her children in the time she has left with them, and leave lasting memories for them to cherish.

The GoFundMe, set up last year, is to help ease the financial burden for Lisa and her family and help add some security for the children’s future.

She wants “to ease the financial stress” on them for when she’s no longer here with them. “They’re my absolute world, it’s all about them,” said Lisa.

All donations, no matter how small, are greatly appreciated by the family. See https://www.gofundme.com/f/lisa-broderick for more.

Reggie’s Christmas Lights Display Raises Over €1,200 For Recovery Haven

.

A TRALEE man’s Christmas lights display has raised over €1,200 for Recovery Haven Kerry.

For the past number of years, Reggie Rogers has adorned the outside of his home in Ballinorig with stunning lights and other decorations, many of which are made by himself.

Over four years ago, Reggie received a cancer diagnosis and thankfully now he is out the other side of that, but he wanted to help out Recovery Haven for the amazing work they do in helping people with cancer and their families.

Continued below…

.

He decided a few years ago to put a bucket outside the house where people could drop in a donation if they were impressed by the lights display.

“What I do is very small compared to the work they do here. It’s just unreal what they do in Recovery Haven,” said Reggie.

The public responded very generously again this year, contributing €1,236 to the great cause. All at Recovery Haven expressed their gratitude to Reggie for his generosity and indeed to anyone who donated.

Tralee Bay Wetlands Events To Marks World Wetlands Day

.

TRALEE Bay Wetlands are to host a number of events to coincide with the 52nd anniversary of the signing of the Ramsar Convention, an international agreement for the preservation and wise use of global wetlands.

Each year all over the world on February 2, organisations, schools and individuals get together to raise awareness of the importance and value of wetlands, and how we can safeguard them for our future.

To celebrate this occasion, the Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre Eco & Activity Park will be running a schools program for both primary schools and Transition Year students available from Monday, January 23 until the end of February.

Continued below…

.

Learn why we should all care about wetlands, what kinds of animals and plants live there, and how humans are at risk from the loss of this precious habitat through a fun mix of outdoor activities and indoor sessions.

Additionally, Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre will be running a weekend of events from Saturday 4th February to Monday 6th.

These include Guided Wild Wetlands Urban Walks at 3pm on Saturday 4th, Sunday 5th & Monday 6th February at 3pm.

This guided tour will offer  a tour of the wetland, on foot, as well as giving a short talk on the ways that wetlands are vital to our future.

Suitable for both Adults & Children. Tickets can be booked in advance online. Adults €10 (and include a coffee/tea) Children accompanied by an adult free of charge.

There will also be a Nature Bay Walk of Tralee Bay Special Area of Conversation on both Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th February commencing at 11am.

.

A SPECIAL commemorative concert marking the centenary of the Civil War in Kerry will take place at Siamsa Tíre in Tralee next month as part of the programme of events for a three-day conference on the conflict in the county and beyond.

‘Their Memory Will Endure’ is a concert of song, poetry, drama and letters from the Civil War period in Kerry and will take place on Saturday, February 25 at 8pm.

The concert, featuring some of Kerry’s best-known performers, will bring to a close the three-day Kerry Civil War Conference at Siamsa Tíre which is part of the 2023 Decade of Centenaries Programme.

Continued below…

.

A distinguished cast present a wide selection of songs, drama and poetry which offer varying perspectives on the events of 1922-23.

Performers include the poet Gabriel Fitzmaurice, singers Róisín Ryan, Karen Trench and Mícheál Ó Sé, musicians Matt Griffin (guitar), Matt Dean (flute and whistle), and Bryan O’Leary (accordion), members of the Killorglin Drama Group, and set dancers from Kilcummin. Tickets are now on sale from the Siamsa Tíre Box office on 066 7123055 or www.siamsatire.com

Dr Susan Motherway, ethnomusicologist at MTU Kerry, who is choreographing the event said: “This concert recognises the historical role and significance of the popular ballad in Ireland. As the folk singer Frank Harte once stated: ‘Those in power write the history, while those who suffer write the songs.’ With the help of song collectors Gabriel Fitzmaurice and Peter Mullarkey, and historians Fiona Brennan and Owen O’Shea this concert re-tells the stories of Kerry people during the Civil War, be they combatant, son, daughter, wife or mother.

“We are particularly delighted to welcome Brian Sheehy to the stage to share a personal reflection of his father John Joe Sheehy and the role of the GAA in healing the political divide,” said Dr Motherway.

One of the organisers of the Kerry Civil War Conference, Bridget McAuliffe said: “We are thrilled to have so many talented and experienced performers coming together to commemorate the Civil War in this way. Our objective with this centenary conference is to explore the events of this period in many ways, whether through lectures, discussions and exhibitions as well as artistic portrayals of the trauma and turbulence of this difficult time in our history.”

The three-day conference in Siamsa Tíre Tralee will mark the centenary of the Civil War and will bring together a wide range of local, national and international experts, historians and academics to discuss the conflict and its legacy.

The conference will form part of the Decade of Centenaries Programme for 2023 and is supported by Kerry County Council and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht Sport and Media. Full details at www.kerrycivilwarconference.ie
