Mid Kerry Senior Football League: Group A, Round 3 Result
Milltown/Castlemaine’s Senior side travelled to Glenbeigh last weekend for their third match of the 2023 season against Glenbeigh/Glencar.

Both sides came into the contest with two wins from two games over Cromane and Laune Rangers ‘B respectively meaning that the Round 3 encounter last weekend would decide who topped the group.

In a low-scoring affair, Milltown/Castlemaine played with the breeze in their favour for the opening half but there was nothing separating the two sides at the half-time interval as the scores were level at 1-2 to 0-5.

Jonathan O’Sullivan raising our green flag after a good turnover from Brendan Casey midway through the first half. Gavan O’Grady landed a few lovely scores off the ground at the opposite end for the hosts with Jack Brosnan chipping in too.

The second half was much of the same with little to separate the teams, Glenbeigh/Glencar mainly through the boot of chief marksman Gavan O’Grady moved into a two point lead as the game ticked towards full-time at 0-8 to 1-3, Sean Hogan with Milltown/Castlemaine’s only point in the second half through a fisted effort before late points from Jonathan O’Sullivan and a beauty off the ground into the breeze from Eanna O’Connor seen both sides leave the field all square in what, on the balance of play would have to be considered a fair result.

Both teams will have another outing next weekend in the Mid Kerry League Semi-Finals.
Final score: Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-8 Milltown/Castlemaine 1-5

All not-for-profit clubs and organisations are encouraged to make the most of this opportunity at their local fair to promote, recruit, and showcase the opportunities and activities they have taking place in their local community.

Events will also take place in Dingle on March 12; Listowel on April 23; Kenmare on May 7;  Killorglin on May 14 and Cahersiveen on May 21.

The Club and Volunteer Fairs aim to celebrate and promote the extensive range of local community not-for-profit clubs and organisations we have throughout Kerry.

The events will be free to attend and enable members of the public come and see what is available for them in their community and to speak and engage with the clubs and organisations directly, to find out more for themselves.

Speaking about the upcoming event, Gearóid O’Doherty, the Coordinator of Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership said, “There are many brilliant opportunities throughout Kerry for people to be active, and we want to ensure that everybody gets the opportunity to engage and get involved.”

Geraldine O’Sullivan, the Manager of Kerry Volunteer Centre added, “With many people new to Kerry or moving towns or villages within, be that through work, college, retirement or otherwise, this is an ideal way to get involved in the community and explore ways to stay active and to be part or your locality”

The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Francis Flynn, encouraged everyone to participate in the fairs.

“This is a great opportunity for members of the public to learn what their local clubs and voluntary groups have to offer. All not-for-profit clubs and organisations that would like to benefit from their local Club & Volunteer Fair are encouraged to reserve today,” he said.

ALL-STARS: Spring is here and the Austin Stack Club All-Stars were back in action when the first week of Football-For-All commenced on Sunday last (26th). We had a great turn out as faces old and new attended our session which was held in the CBS Primary School Hall, Cluain na Lobhar. Head coach, Richie Conway, put our young players through their paces as we began the new season with fitness games and ball skills. The atmosphere was electric with our young stars full of excitement and enthusiasm, showing that they are ready to build on last year’s success.

Thanks to our coaches and volunteers and ‘well done’ to all who participated. We will continue to train in CBS Primary School Hall for the next few weeks before we move outdoors. And, of course, newcomers are always welcome. So, boys, if you want to join us on Sunday next (5th March) at 3pm just come along as we continue our start to the new season! (Cathal Ó Sé)

PEIL FAOI 11: Last Sunday’s training/coaching went very well. A lot of really good football was played by these boys. We have some great players in this group! We still encourage every U11 boy in the greater Rock area to come along to The Green CBS Astroturf Pitch on Sunday next at11am. Under 11s at 11.00! Fáilte roimh chách!

PEIL FAOI 13: (i) Team Meeting: we had a great turnout of the 2023 playing squad, their parents and the coaching team. Pre-season activities were reviewed and planning for the season ahead was discussed. Topics covered included objectives for year ahead, code of behaviour, disciplinary policy, preparation for the season ahead, parental support, membership.

(ii) Two challenge games were played with Ballymac and Firies in the Bishop’s Field on Sunday last (26th). Refreshments and big screen sport were laid on in the clubhouse after the games for the players and their parents/guardians. Many thanks to Harry and Lisa for their assistance, to Shane Lynch and John Breen for having the grass cut, having the pitch lined and having rooms available for all the teams.

Thanks to the parents who looked after the refreshments after both games, washed both sets of jerseys, took the photos, wrote the match reports, umpired the games and kept the scores. Thanks to Billy Lacey for refereeing both games and a big thanks to the visiting Ballymac and Firies teams for two good sporting contests. A whole club effort from players, coaches, parents and the club itself ensured that enjoyable day was had by all.

(iii) AdeS v Ballymac (report by Ed O’Regan): The lads had a great run out against a strong Ballymac side. The game was played in thirds and in the first period our boys started slowly as they played against a stiff breeze. Ballymac built up a good lead but as the first period progressed our lads grew into the game and were unlucky not to score a goal. With the breeze behind them in the 2nd period they started to take control, playing great free-flowing football, and picked got two goals.

Ballymac, however, never wilted and picked off some points to leave the score finely balanced at 2-5 apiece going into the final period. Even though our lads were playing against the breeze in the final period they took control of the game, scoring the crucial goals to leave the final score at 5-7 to 2-7 in favour of The Rock.

All players in the squad played their part. Thanks to Ballymac for travelling and playing their part in an excellent game of football that will be of great benefit to both sides as all prepare for the upcoming season.

(iv) AdeS v Firies: A keenly contested battle went right to the wire but the visitors shaded it on a score of 1-10 to 2-12. The opening quarter set the tone for the hour and there was very little between the teams as the players got used to the conditions. An athletic Firies midfield paring ensured that the visitors countered the strong wind helping The Rock boys and they led by two points…1-1 to 0-2…at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was again nip and tuck with The Rock coming to grips around the middle third; they should have scored more than the three points but it was the visitors who got the rub of the green and scored a fortuitous second goal to lead at half time…2-5 to 0-5.

Our lads faced an uphill battle in the 2nd half against a strong breeze; they took the fight to Firies and showed great character in keeping in touch and indeed were very unlucky not to gain parity.

Going into the final quarter the score was 2-5 to 0-7 in Firies’ favour. The final quarter was again very close and, just when as it seemed that The Rock would reel in Firies, the visitors, aided by the breeze, kept their noses in front with some fine long range points. An hour of chasing the game caught up with the Rock St boys, particularly those who were also involved in the first game, and Fires had five points to spare in the end.

(v) The Rock U13 panel: David Ahern, Blake Bowler, Shane Carey, Eliot Calleja, Gearóid Corcoran, Tom Dawson, Mark Foley, Albi Gaxha, Conor Hanafin, Diarmuid Hennessy, Oisín Horan, Luke Kavanagh, Séamus Keenan, Billy Kirby, Danny Lane, Harry Maguire, Zac Moore, Darragh Moriarty, Conor Murphy, Matthew Murphy, Jayden O’Dowd, Ryan O’Flaherty, Joe O’Halloran, Oran O’Regan, Tadhg O’Regan, Noah Reidy, Mark Riordan, Liam Swords, Ediart Topali. (vi) Training: Tuesday 28thFebruary from 5pm to 6pm in Connolly Park and Friday 3rd March from 7pm to 8pm in MTU North Campus. Gardaí In Kerry Conducting ‘Operation Slow Down’ For 24 Hour Period

.

AN Garda Síochána are conducting a national speed enforcement operation “Slow Down”, supported by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) for a 24 hour period from 7am this morning to 7am on Wednesday morning.

The aim of “Slow Down Day” is to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding, to increase compliance with speed limits and act as a deterrent to driving at excessive or inappropriate speed.

The overall objective is to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads. Already this morning they detected a motorist travelling 63km/h in a 50km/h Zone on the R561 Castledrum, Castlemaine. Another was clocked travelling at 126km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N21 Tooreenmore, Knocknagoshel.

Continued below…

.

The operation will consist of high visibility speed enforcement across the road network. Gardaí will also deliver the message through various media channels to remind people of the potential impact on families and communities of speeding.

Government Departments, Local Authorities, Public and private sector fleet operators are invited to participate in the initiative by circulating to employees the key message of “Slow Down” and, whether driving for business or private purposes, to always drive within the speed limit and at a speed appropriate to the prevailing conditions.

CLOTHES RECYCLING: Our Club Fundraising Clothes Recycling collection, which took place last Saturday, was a great success. Thanks to everyone who supported the event.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Laune Rangers 2-10 (16); Austin Stacks 3-9 (18).

Our round 2 Co. League game, played in a dry, sunny Killorglin on last Saturday (25th Feb) saw both sides dominating at periods before we came away with a well-deserved two points victory. It took both sides some time to come to grips with a strong swirling breeze before the home side opened the scoring after eleven minutes. Before that they could have goaled but for a point-blank save by Steven Conway. We responded a minute later with a well-taken Ryan O’Driscoll goal followed by a second point from a free by Rangers. Two brilliant points from play by Daniel Kirby extended our lead to three points after 24 minutes. But Rangers then dominated the closing minutes of the half scoring four unanswered points (two from play) to leave them ahead by a point at half time (0-6 to 1-2).

They extended that lead to four points eight minutes into the second half when they added a goal and a point to one for us from  Ryan O’Driscoll. Ryan was then very much involved during an eleven minute period between the 40th and 51st minute when we scored two goals and five points without reply – Ryan contributing  a goal and three points (from three 45s) and Ronan Carroll with a goal and a points – his point also from a forty five. Conor Bastible was the scorer of our other point during this period. Both sides then scored a point each during the next three minutes – ours by Oliver Lata. That was to be our last score of the game while Rangers went on to score a goal and two points to make it a shaky closing minutes for us. But our lads did hold on for that well-deserved two points win.

Team:  Steven Conway, James Fisher, Donnacha Horgan, Ciarán Kavanagh, Seán Heaslip, Seán Óg Brosnan, Alex Tuohy, Fionán Ryan, Daniel Kirby (Capt) (0-2), Calvin Casey, Ronan Carroll (1-1 – one 45), Thomas Deregee, Ryan O’Driscoll (2-4 – three frees), Oliver Lata (0-1), Cormac Bastible (0-1).

Subs used: Liam O’Connell (55m), Rory Lynch (57m).

We are now away to Keel/Listry in round 3. As we write this game is fixed for this coming Saturday afternoon (4th March) at 3pm. We are at home then in the final two rounds against Kenmare/Shamrocks in round 4 (11th March) and against An Ghaeltacht in the 5th and final round the day after St. Patrick’s Day. Our opening round game against Legion which did not take place has yet to be decided on by the Co. Board.

SENIOR FOOTBALL; After wins against Na Gaeil and John Mitchels in the opening two rounds of the Tralee/St. Brendans League our third and final round game away to Ardfert, is now due to be played on this coming Sunday (5th March) at 12 noon.

CLUB CARDS: Our Card sessions continue in the Clubhouse on Mondays and Thursdays with the starting time of 9pm sharp.

U7 Boys and Girls

The under 7s were in action again on Saturday at MTU Sports Academy.  These young players enthusiastically took on all of the training stations on offer and enjoyed a few competitive games of hurling to finish off the training session.

With attendance holding at the mid 30’s upwards most weeks the under 7’s are going from strength to strength.

Tralee Parnells U11s and Coaches having their first training session at the new Ball Wall facility at Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn

Ball Wall

It was a stunning Saturday morning at the Ball Wall at Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn when Tralee Parnells coaches turned out in force to learn the nuances of Wall Ball training from South Kerry GDA, Colm O’Brien.

Our enthusiastic U11 hurlers were put through their paces by Colm who advised coaches on running effective ball wall training sessions.  In 2021, Tralee Parnells had jumped at the chance to partner with Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn on a Sports Capital Programme grant application.

This facilitated the school in building a state of the art AstroTurf pitch with a ball wall attached for hurling and camogie.

Thank you in particular to retired principal, Cáit Uí Chonchúir, and current principal, Liam Ó Conchubhair, for driving the development.

Thank you to Colm and our U11 hurlers for running an informative coach-the-coaches session at the weekend!  All teams at the club are looking forward to benefiting from Tralee’s first ball wall.

In addition it helped to bring the new players who came up from u12 to settle in with the group.

U5

Great work this morning boys, girls, mums, and dads and especially our player of the week Duo Laila and Tadhg!

Their smiles and enthusiastic efforts won them the trophies this week. Everyone will get a turn throughout the season! It was a loud and busy session, we are delighted to have so many boys and girls joining in but fully understand some of the younger kids can drop in and out of the session as they need.

Parents are encouraged to stay and join in where they can especially until the children get used to the environment! Try to practice the with hand catching this week and balloon / ball kicking off the laces. Well done everyone.

U7

We had an excellent first session in MTU today. Great numbers turned out, and we had some great organised chaos. We did a lot of refresher skills just to reintroduce the kids back in. We had some great help with Brendan Poff and our new coach Oliver Murphy
Looking forward to next Sunday again and we encourage all kids to practice during the week.

U8 Girls

We were delighted to welcome our enthusiastic U8 girl’s back to the MTU for the start of the season and especially our 3 new girls Hannah, Vivienne & Hannah G who fitted right in and really added to the session.

The girl’s practised evasion, movement and ball handling in an energetic 1st session before closing with some enjoyable roller ball against some very agile parents!  Thanks for the participation and we look forward to seeing you all next week.

U9

Our u9’s had their first session of 2023 on Sunday, where all the lads arrived full of energy, and delighted to be back. After our warm up, we had 2 fundamental movement grids set up, followed by our skill drills which got them all back into action. We finished up with a game,  where we had some great tackling and scores. Congrats to Jack who won Player of the Week.

U10 Girls

And just like that we are back! Great session today a great bunch of girls and three very enthusiastic coaches, Noel, Johnathon, and Kieran. We worked on all our fundamentals hand passing,  kick passing ,tackling.

The girls showed great enthusiasm and grasped the basic skills very easily. Congratulations to our player of the week who has obviously being practicing very hard all winter. We had 10 players today and hope to have 15 next week .

If we could have 1 or possibly 2 female parents to help us during the year ,  it’s not an issue when we are indoors but when we move outdoors a female presence will be essential at all matches & games with  the 3 coaches , who will try to make the majority of games and sessions , many hands make light work! If anybody is interested please can you let Kieran o Shea know ,We won’t expect ye there every week! A huge welcome to our new players today ye were all amazing.

U11/U13

Our U11 and U13 combined sessions took place last Thursday on our own Astro and also last Sunday as part of the opening day in the academy up at the MTU. We have had great attendance so far and we look to working with the players for the season ahead. Our county league will commence as soon as the clocks go forward at the end of the month.

Michéal Reidy and Vinny Horan, Vice-Captain and Captain of Ballymac Senior Team 2023.

Seniors

Tralee/St Brendan’s SFL Group B 2023 Round 3

Churchill 2-09 Ballymac 1-11

Snap shots of some of the positives from today: Despite the bitter cold it was a wonderful day for football. A great pitch and Facilities in in Churchill.  We had a fine squad.  Our team was led by our Captain Vinny Horan. Vinny came on in his first senior match under Manager Barry O’Shea and Gene O’Keeffe as selector ten years ago in 2013 after a very successful seven years at under age. Even at under 12 he showed his leadership skills.

Our Vice Captain for the year is Michéal Reidy who was voted the players player of the year for 2022. Michéal also played his way up through the Coiste na nÓg ranks and played with the Kerry Minor team. He made his senior debut in 2015 under Manager Stephen O’Brien. His commitment to the Ballymac Jersey is seen at every game.

Our team played well today and the scoring and defending was good. We had patches that were a learning experience. Overall, it was a good outing for the players and those loyal supporters who braved the cold to cheer them on.

Churchill put the first point on the scoreboard and failed to score for the next fifteen minutes. During this time Darragh Regan scored a goal with a point in either side from Donal Daly.

Two more points followed from Niall Collins and Vinny Horan before Churchill shook off the cobwebs and scored a goal and two points. This left one point between the teams. Vinny Horan scored two fine points before the break to leave the half time score Churchill 1-3 to Ballymac 1-06.

Vinny Horan scored the first point of the second half and this was immediately followed by a goal from Churchill.  The game continued with pointed scores from both sides. Coming up to full time it was level 1-11 to 2-08 and then just before the final whistle Churchill scored a vital point that gave them the victory.

It was a tough physical game today. We need games like that. Our back-line looked good today particularly Cian Counihan and Diarmuid Galvin catching and fielding some fine high balls. The blend of the seasoned players with the novices continues with a lot more work to do.

Ballymacelligott B v Laune Rangers B – Minor County League Div 8 – Round 1

Ballymacelligott 2-10

Laune Rangers 1-09

Our Minor team played in the first round of the county league  Division 8 against Laune Rangers in blustery conditions on Sunday. This was a historic occasion for the club as it was the first time the club fielded a second team at minor level.

Ballymac started this game slowly and after 10 minutes Ballymac trailed Laune Rangers 1-04 to 0-01.  Ballymac soon got to grips with this game and at half time the game was level ar 1-04 apiece the goal coming from Ballymac captain Alex O’Riordan in the 17th minute.

In the second half, Ballymac soon took control with some well taken scores with a wind slightly favouring Ballymac in the second half.  The crucial score came in the seventh minute of the second half with a well taken goal from Ciarán O’Connell. The game was strongly contested throughout with Ballymac running out four-point winners on a scoreline of Ballymac 2-10 Laune Rangers 1-09.

Well done to our boys for the effort and application shown.

Ciarán O’Connell (1-03), Alex O’Riordan (1-0) Jamie Burke (0-02), Luke Griffin (0-02), Cathal White (0-02) Gearoid Healy (0-01)

Kerry Education and Training Board (Kerry ETB) are participating in the celebrations for the anniversary of the establishment of the Education and Training Board nationally in 2013.

The week-long event celebrates the growth and development of the sector. Kerry ETB, employing over 1300 staff, provides education and opportunities for over 15,000 learners annually from their 37 locations in the county, including primary, post-primary and further education and training.

The inaugural ETB Week (27th February to 3rd March) will culminate in ETB Day on Thursday, 2nd March and will see Kerry ETB and other education and training boards around the country host events across their schools, offices and centres.

The first ETB Excellence Awards in Croke Park will take place on 2nd March and will be hosted by RTE’s Ray Kennedy.

Kerry ETB are shortlisted for two awards on the day. The Bright Mind app has been shortlisted for the Equality Award.

The app was developed by 2 transition-year students from Castleisland Community College. Under the Excellence in Education category, the Universal Design Learning (UDL) Project has been shortlisted. UDL is a set of principles for curriculum development that give all individuals equal opportunities to learn, including Students with Disabilities.

Complementing the national activities, Kerry ETB has a range of ETB Week events planned locally, including the Radio Kerry’s Talkabout show with Deirdre Walsh on Monday, 27th February.

Students will launch the ETBI Patrons’ Framework on Ethos to Kerry ETB Board members on Tuesday, addressing how the Patrons Framework benefits their daily lives in school.

There will be various activities across Kerry ETB schools during the week, including an ethos treasure hunt, art competitions and quizzes.

To complete the week on Friday, ETB Day staff coffee mornings, in aid of BUMBLEance, are being organised at local schools, centres, campuses and offices.

In welcoming the week’s events, Cllr Jim Finucane, Chairperson of Kerry ETB, said; “Kerry ETB was established 10 years ago this year to provide education, training and youth work services across the county. We have since grown and currently provide education to over 15,000 annual learners, with the scope of our services expanded significantly. We now have 3 community national schools, 8 post-primary schools, 5 Kerry College Campuses, 5 further education and training centres and a very extensive range of youth, further education and training centres and community education services across the county.”

Kerry ETB CEO Colm McEvoy added, “ETB Week, led by ETBI, gives us all a chance to reflect on the development of the organisation over the past ten years. The provision of our education and training opportunities is very important. As a county-based organisation, we fully recognise the potential of our provision to enrich and change lives, create opportunities for people, and enhance our communities.

“We look forward to continuing our journey into the future. Creating and promoting the development of a lifelong learning society in Kerry. So that all who live there have access to the education and training required to fulfil their potential and to meet their personal, social, cultural, economic and civic needs.”

PHOTOS/REPORT: Warriors Overpower Killester To Make It Six From Six

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors remain in contention for place in the Super League playoffs after impressively securing their sixth win in a row by overpowering an understrength Killester at a packed Tralee Sport Complex on Saturday night.

Killester played without the services of some of their big guns with Gregorio Adon, Conroy Baltimore, Ciaran Roe, Paddy Sullivan and most notably former Warrior Paul Dick all watching on from the sideline.

Continued below…

.

That said, the Warriors took to the court without Daniel Jokubaitis who sat out the contest due to suspension.

The Warriors began with the intent of a team determined to put the contest beyond the reach of the visitors in short order and an early scoring blitz built a 13-4 lead with scores from Eoin Quigley, Dre Jackson and Fergal O’Sullivan from either side of the arc.

Killester’s resistance was limited to back to back scores from captain Alan Casey and free throws from Lucas Fernandez but when Steven Bowler, Majita Jokic and Rich Dunham converted either side of another trademark three from Fergal O’Sullivan the Warriors assumed total control.

Continued below…

.

John Behan, Eoghan Kiernan and Eric Westbrookes kept the visitors in range but Jokic hooked in a buzzer beater to see the Warriors lead 27-14 at quarter time.

The Warriors intensity dropped noticeably in the second quarter allowing Killester to play their way back into contention with Tomas Fernandez, Casey and John Behan leading the charge.

Rich Dunham arced in a cracking three from the top of the key and Quigley and Jokic backed that up with scores from inside to keep the Warriors double-digit lead intact.

However, Behan, Lucas Fernandez. Tomas Fernandez and Kiernan added either side of a Jokic three pointer to see the Dublin side cut the Warriors advantage to 39-30 at the long break.

Killester edged a little closer early in the third through Alan Casey but it sparked an immediate response from the Warriors that saw the hosts move swiftly into a comfortable 20 point lead.

.

Threes from Quigley bookended a 13 point volley that saw Dre Jackson and Jokic both in range.

John Behan kept his side in the contest with two threes but when Aivaras Ousis hit a cracking three from the corner, the Warriors took a likely game winning 58-43 lead into the final quarter.

The Warriors cut loose in the fourth and by the midway point had blown out their three quarter time lead out to 72-45. Killester could not live with the Warriors who were finding scores wherever they looked for them and a hat trick of threes from Quigley, Jokic and Jack Tobin spread the game completely.

Killester’s token resistance came in the form of scores from Mark Convery, Tomas Fernandez and Casey but the Warriors arguably kept the best until last with brothers Aaron and Padraig Fleming entered the fray to bring the Warriors faithful to their feet by hitting a cracking three pointer each.

Another major score from Kieran Donaghy delighted the home crowd as well as the entire Armagh football team and management who were in attendance.

Jack Tobin capped an impressive cameo appearance by dropping in his second three of the night to secure an 84-54 win and keep the Warriors Super League flame lit for another week at least.

Dre Jackson steps back to float in another score. Photo by Liam Ryan

There is still the possibility for a twist or two as the teams approach the final two rounds of the regulation season.

The equation remains the same for the Warriors – keep winning to set up a potential final game showdown with EnergyWise Ireland Neptune.

However, Emporium Cork Basketball could be brought into the fourth place playoff place battle if they fail to secure wins from both their assignments next weekend when they take on DBS Éanna and Killester in back to back fixtures next Saturday and Sunday.

All in all it does look like it will come down to a final day showdown with Neptune and a chance for Warriors to stay in the race to defend their title that at the turn of the year looks decidedly unlikely.

It promises to be another special night at the Complex so the date for the diary is Saturday 11th March.

In the meantime, the Warriors take the trip to Dublin to take on old rivals UCD Marian in a must win game next Saturday with tip off at the Belfield Sports Centre at 7.00pm.

A WIN is a win.

That’s one of the few positive aspects take from last night’s game in Tralee as Kerry took the points in a turgid match under the lights.

Another was Stefan Okunbor’s performance. The Na Gaeil man was consistent and comfortable in the defence, which was put under pressure at times by a workmanlike Armagh side.

Jason Foley and Barry Dan O’Sullivan were also impressive but the football wasn’t pretty and it took two late points from substitutes Tony Brosnan and Donal O’Sullivan to seal a 0-12 to 0-11 win in front of the 11,603 spectators.

With a trip to Tyrone beckoning, Kerry really needed the victory to put points on the board. Scroll down for photos…

THEY’RE was a lot of hair left on the floor of a local bar last night as a charity headshave was held in aid of the Kerry Cancer Support Group.

Local postman Aidan Griffin had been growing his hair out for the past couple of years and decided to cut it short to try to raise funds for the local charity.

Aidan’s friends and family gathered at The Huddle Bar on Friday night where local barber Tony McMahon did the honours and shaved the locks off.

.

He was joined by Bernard ‘Gadget’ Evans who decided to lose his long locks too in memory of his sister Eileen who passed away seven years ago from cancer.

‘Gadget’ said he hoped people would be inspired to give more generously into the donation buckets by getting his head shaved.

Aidan Griffin said he was delighted with how the night turned out and thanked everyone for coming.

Aidan poses for one last shot with his long locks.

“Cancer has hit every family and the Kerry Cancer Support Group provides a fantastic service for people needing treatment. I want to thank The Huddle Bar, everyone for coming and donating to the cause and  to local businesses for donating spot prizes on the night,” he said.

Breda Dyland of the Kerry Cancer Support Group thanked Aidan for his generosity and and The Huddle Bar for hosting the event.

Breda said Paul Lowth of The Huddle Bar has been a great supporter of the charity and just a few weeks ago €800 was raised from donation buckets left at the bar.

A fun time was had by all and the karaoke session kept the entertainment going into the night. Scroll down for photos…

REPORT: Kerry Ladies Beat All-Ireland Champions To Continue Winning Run

.

Dan Kearney reports on another great win for the Kerry side in Brosna yesterday…

Kerry 1-18

Meath 0-9

Niamh Carmody scored 1-4 and Kerry powered their way to a 12-point victory and ended Meath’s chances of reclaiming their Lidl NFL Division 1 title with a superb performance in Brosna.

Carmody was the star while Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh also scored 0-7 for the Kingdom in a win that nudges Kerry ever closer to a place in the final for the first time since 2008.

The sides swapped scores early in the game with Meath’s Amy O’Leary getting her side off the mark with a sweet point in the 2nd minute but Erica McGlynn punched over for Kerry 2 minutes later after Siofra O’Shea initially hit the post.

Continued below…

.

Kerry, playing with the aid of a swirling breeze, were putting a lot of heat on the Meath kick out and Louise Galvin got on the end of Monica McGuirk’s kick to punish the Royals and push Kerry 0-2 to 0-1 ahead.

Kerry’s goal came in the fifth minute. Ní Mhuircheartaigh put pressure on the Meath kick out again and she found wing forward Carmody off the shoulder. She had work to do but drove to the net from an acute angle.

Kerry were in control now, and O’Shea hit a fine effort off the crossbar but Ní Mhuircheartaigh made no mistake in the 10th minute with a lovely point to push Kerry 1-3 to 0-1 ahead.

Niamh O’Sullivan and McGlynn traded scores but a Ní Mhuircheartaigh free pushed Kerry 1-5 to 0-2 ahead although Aoibhin Cleary got one back for the visitors.

Ní Mhuircheartaigh responded once more with a free after a foul on Anna Galvin but Meath were to strike for two points on the bounce from Niamh Gallogly and Ciara Smyth to put them just four behind, 1-6 to 0-5.

The last act of the first half fell to Lorraine Scanlon who scored a point on the stroke of half time following fine work from Aoife Dillane to see the home side take a 1-7 to 0-5 lead in at the break.

The second half belonged to Kerry completely as they outscored Meath by 0-11 to 0-4. Carmody popped over four superb efforts for the winners with Ní Mhuircheartaigh adding four more (two frees) with the Meath reply coming from Stacey Grimes (two) while Ciara Smyth and Aine Sheridan added one each.

In the finish it was Kerry who held all the aces and with five wins from five Croke Park could beckon.

REPORT: Gaxha Gets First Ever Kerry FC Goal But Bray Prevail

.
Photo: Adam Kowalczyk

David Moriarty reports on last night’s game between Kerry FC and Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds…

On Friday night Kerry travelled to Bray in an attempt to record their first points of the season. Many loyal supporters travelled to Bray with them for their first away game of the campaign.

Coming off the back of a 2-0 defeat last week at home to Cobh Ramblers, Kerryhoped to get their season up and running at the Carlisle Grounds.

The Kerry team made two changes to the starting eleven that played last week in Mounthawk Park with Leo Gaxha who was very impressive off the bench last time around and also Andy Quaid getting his first start of the season.

Continued below…

.

On the other side, Bray kept their starting eleven completely unchanged after their late 1-0 win away to Treaty United last week.

As the game kicked off the first chance for either side came in the fourth minute when a long
diagonal ball from Bray was received well into space down the right wing.

The ball was cut back, and Chris Lyons just dragged his effort on goal wide. A free kick was awarded to Bray just three minutes after on the same wing however, Conor Crowley’s delivery was easily dealt with.

Photo: Adam Kowalczyk

Kerry were awarded a free kick of their own down the other end when Trpimir Vrljicak showed fantastic close control and was taken down just a few yards outside of the box.

Unfortunately for Kerry, the low-fired free kick was easily dealt with by Wanderers keeper Alex Moody.

Bray had their decent share of possession in the opening stages, and they got their reward in the fifteenth minute when central midfielder Cole Omorhiomwan peeled off around the back post from a corner and headed in making it 1-0 to Bray.

Continued below…

.

Just two or three minutes after the goal Bray got through again and Wayne Guthrie was called into action making a fantastic save from a one-on-one effort.

In a half that was dominated by Bray, Wayne Guthrie was brilliant for Kerry and kept his side out of further danger a few times in dangerous periods of the game.

Sean Mcgrath was very good also in the opening exchanges for Kerry, trying to pick his way through the bray midfield, but they were unfortunately not leaving any doors open early on.

After half an hour Sean Kennedy found himself in a pocket of space and tried a shot roughly
twenty yards from goal.

Alex Moody was level to the effort and a lot of that was due to the pitch being a bit sandy in parts, which seemed to slow down the pace of the game in certain areas.

The best chance of the half by far for Kerry came in the forty-second minute when a great piece of play down the right-hand side of the box was met by Leo Gaxha who pulled the trigger early but was blocked and dealt with in the end leading to a goal kick.

Just before halftime, Sean Kennedy was making himself a nuisance once again for the Bray defense down the right when he defence went passed two players with ease and drilled a low cross into the box, only for it to be met again by Moody.

Continued below…

.

The second half started and the positive play and missed efforts toward the end of the first half from Kerry were cruelly pounced on by Bray as they went 2-0 up.

A fantastic cross from the right by Ger Shortt was met by a brilliantly finished diving header from Chris Lyons into the bottom right corner.

Kerry had a lifeline though when an unsure-looking Bray defence was carved open by a simple pass, Leo Gaxha had all the time in the world to score Kerry’s first senior Airtricity League goal.

An enormously proud moment for the young lad which will be the answer to a quiz question in years to come, I am sure.

Wayne Guthrie was called into action once again just a couple of minutes after the Kerry goal with a great save to put it out for a corner after a well-directed header on goal. Luckily enough for Kerry, Guthrie has been immense between the sticks in the opening two games of the campaign.

Bray would, unfortunately, take back their two-goal lead in the fifty-seventh minute through a carbon copy of the first goal.

A delivery into the box from a corner and again Cole Omorhiomwan headed home to restore Bray’s two-goal lead.

Bray started to close out the last twenty minutes or so in quite comfortable fashion and Kerry did not really threaten the goal as much as they would have hoped to in the latter parts of the game.

They did come close however with about four minutes to go through a good chance from Nathan Gleeson who came on at half time.

Continued below…

.

A great run down the right flank showing blistering pace had his shot smothered in the end by Moody and Bray Wanderers went out 3-1 winners.

A tough result to take tonight after there was a glimmer of hope of getting back into the game.

Kerry FC returns to Mounthawk park next Friday, the third of February and a sold-out crowd will be in attendance as they take on Treaty United in a Munster derby fixture with the main hopes for the Kingdom being making that climb up the table.

PHOTOS: Ukrainian Community Gathers In The Square To Mark First Anniversary Of Russian Invasion

.

A POIGNANT, emotional but defiant event took place in The Square on Friday evening to mark the first anniversary of the war in Ukraine.

Hundreds of members of the Ukrainian community in Tralee joined locals in a vigil to remember loved ones still in their home country and those who have lost their lives in the war.

Organised by the Ukrainian community in Tralee, it was also an opportunity to thank the people of Kerry who have welcomed them over the past year since the Russian invasion.

Continued below…

.

One of the organisers Oksana Tabalyuk was happy with the turnout and that it was important to hold the event.

“We wanted to show there is still a war in Ukraine and it’s a very difficult time for us. We also wanted to thank the Irish people who have supported us. We feel safe here which is very important,” she said.

There were plenty flags and banners on show decrying the war while speeches in Ukrainian with an English translation were made by young speakers.

One speaker, Olena, said the Ukrainian people had endless gratitude to the people of Ireland, Kerry and the Government for opening their hearts to them.

Continued below…

.

“Ireland was one of the first countries to open to doors for us. We were lost. We were stressed. Our lives had been broken. Thank you for giving us the shelter. Thank you for giving us hope. Thank you for helping to put our lives together. We will never forget your kindness,” she said.

Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Mikey Sheehy, also spoke and said since the war started individuals and organisations in Kerry have responded, including Kerry County Council and the Tralee International Resource Centre.

He also thanked those in the town who offered rooms to families fleeing the invasion which was vital in the Irish response.

“As I look around the crowd here, I can see people who I now count as friends. Friends who have had to stop their lives in an instant to flee. As a father I find this hard to comprehend,” he said.

“However, as a community, you should be very proud of yourselves over the last 12 months. You’ve made yourselves a part of the community here.”

“To deal with such a catastrophic event is unimaginable and when I spoke with some of you earlier, the common theme is that of those still in Ukraine — those sheltering and those fighting for your country. Loved ones, family, friends and acquaintances, they are all in our thoughts this evening.”

The Ukrainian and Irish national anthems were both played along with other patriotic Ukrainian songs, while flowers and candles were also placed to mark the sad occasion.  Scroll down for photos…

Know Your Rights: The Rent-A-Room Relief Scheme

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

In the current housing crisis, people are encouraged to consider letting out rooms in their houses, where they have capacity.

The Rent-A-Room Relief scheme aims to incentivise householders to consider this option. The following are some common questions in relation to the scheme:

What is rent-a-room relief?

The rent-a-room relief lets you earn up to €14,000 per year tax-free if you rent out a room (or rooms) in your home to private tenants.

.

A self-contained unit, such as a basement flat or a converted garage attached to your home, can qualify for this relief.

While renting out a room that is part of your home is not covered by landlord and tenant law, renting out a self-contained unit is covered.

Depending on their circumstances, your tenant(s) may qualify for the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP). In certain circumstances, a tenant can claim Rent Supplement.

What are the qualifying conditions for the scheme?

For you to qualify for rent-a room relief, your home must be located in the State and you must occupy it as your sole residence during the year of assessment.

This means that it is your home for the greater part of the year and is where people would normally expect to make contact with you.

In most cases, you do not have to own the property – you could be a tenant and be sub-letting to someone else. (In these cases, you should check with your landlord that sub-letting is allowed) However, if you are renting to a HAP tenant you must own the property and provide proof of ownership.

Currently, the total (gross) rent that you get, which includes any money that the tenant pays for food, utilities, laundry or similar goods and services, cannot exceed €14,000 in the tax year (1 January to 31 December)

You cannot deduct expenses from your rental income while claiming rent-a-room relief.

If you qualify for rent-a-room relief, the income you get from renting out the room will be exempt from PRSI, the Universal Social Charge or income tax. However, it must be included on your annual income tax return.

What are the exclusions from rent-a-room relief?

You will not qualify for the relief if:

• Your gross income from rent and related services is over €14,000. In this case, Revenue will treat the full rental income minus allowable expenses as part of your total income for tax purposes and this should be included in your tax return.
• You are renting the room in your home to your civil partner, son or daughter (but there is no restriction in the case of other family members)
• You are an employee or office-holder in a company, and the company pays you to allow clients to use the room in your home on an occasional basis
• You are renting the room to short-term guests, for example, through an online accommodation booking site

How would Rental income impact on social welfare payments?

If you are getting a means-tested weekly social assistance payment, Supplementary Welfare Allowance or Working Family Payment from the Department of Social Protection, you can get up to €269.23 a week (€14,000 per year) for renting out a room in your own home without it affecting your social welfare payment.

You should check if renting a room in your home will affect any other payments you are getting such as Fuel Allowance.

This does not apply to short-term lettings (of less than 28 consecutive days). It also does not apply if you are renting a room to your employee or to an immediate family member.

If I avail of the scheme, do I have to register with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB)?

Continued below…

.

If you rent out a self-contained unit in your home, such as a converted garage attached to your home or a basement flat, the rights and obligations under residential tenancies legislation apply to you.

For example, you are obliged to register the tenancy with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB), provide a rent book to the tenant and ensure that the accommodation provided meets minimum physical standards.

Residential tenancies legislation provides for security of tenure for tenants. These provisions are in Part 4 of the Residential Tenancies Act 2004.

However, if the self-contained flat or apartment was originally part of the main house, you can choose to opt out of these provisions. You must give the tenant notice in writing, before the start of the tenancy, if you wish to take this option.

If the part of your home that you rent out is not self-contained, you are not covered by landlord and tenant legislation, so the rights and obligations under that legislation do not apply to you. However, if you are renting to a HAP tenant the accommodation must meet minimum standards.

This also means that private tenants living in your home are living under a licensee agreement, not a tenancy agreement, and are really only entitled to reasonable notice if you choose to terminate the agreement.

How to apply for the scheme?

To claim rent-a-room relief you must record your rental income when making your annual tax return.

You can complete and submit your tax return form online using:

• Revenue’s myAccount Service if you are a PAYE taxpayer (Form 12)
• Revenue Online Service (ROS) if you are self-employed or a PAYE taxpayer with other sources of income (Form 11)

Alternatively, you can complete a hard-copy annual tax return. You record your rental income for rent-a-room relief in the ‘Exempt income’ section of your tax return form and return the completed form to your local tax office.

The tax office can answer any queries you may have and will help if you have any difficulties completing the form.

• For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary.

The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm.  Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www.citizensinformation.ie for further information.
