REPORT: Clinical Cobh Take The Points As Kerry FC Kick Off Campaign

.

David Moriarty reports on a historic night at Mounthawk Park as Kerry FC kicked off their League of Ireland campaign…

On the 17th of February, Kerry FC welcomed Cobh Ramblers under the lights at Mounthawk Park for their first-ever League of Ireland fixture.

The manager Billy Dennehy mentioned in his club notes that he and all his team were looking forward to hearing the Kerry roar and the Tralee faithful certainly lived up to his hopes.

The first ten minutes were cagey with Kerry goalkeeper Wayne Guthrie being called into action a couple of times and matching Cobh’s efforts on goal.

Continued below…

.

The first real effort on goal from either team came in the eleventh minute through a free kick from Cobh on the left-hand side of the box. A low-driven shot from Jack Doherty went through everyone and went just wide of the post.

Kerry started earning a share of the possession as the first stages of the half went on, and it culminated in a fantastic piece of play in the twenty-fourth minute.

Trpimir Vrljicak, Kerry’s big Croatian showed his strength and pace with a great run down the right wing but was unfortunately knocked out of play.

As the half was drawing to a close, Jack Doherty went on a very fast-paced run and earned a close-range freekick which was saved well by Guthrie.

It was evident that Cobh were getting closer, and their efforts were eventually rewarded. In the forty-second minute, a lovely bit of skill and a nice cross from Jack Doherty was met on the volley by Tiernan O’Brien to put Cobh one ahead.

Kerry had a great chance of their own only a few minutes after Cobh’s goal, Vrljicak went on a wonderful run beating two players and just unluckily hitting it wide of the near post.

Half time — Kerry FC 0-1 Cobh Ramblers

At half -time Kerry made two changes, both Leo Gaxha and Ryan Kelliher entered the frame, and the half-time substitutes did well from the off.

Gaxha made an immediate impact and won a corner with a fantastic run, cutting in from the left, beating two, and ripping a hard, low-driven shot. However, Lee Steacy was level to his efforts and made a great save to keep Kerry out.

.

Gaxha was causing mayhem again and had an effort blocked after a wonderfully delivered Graham O’Reilly corner met the former Sheffield United player.

It was clear that the changes at half-time gave Kerry momentum at the start of the second half. Chances came thick and fast as Shane Guthrie saw his header just go over the bar from another corner.

The biggest chance in the second half for Kerry came from Gaxha again who made a great run through the centre and dinked the ball over Steacy’s head only for it to be heroically cleared off the line.

Though the home faithful were making it known to the referee Declan Toland that they felt it had gone over the line, the play was waved on.

With about twenty minutes to go, there was a handball shout for Kerry, but once again Declan Toland waved play on. If VAR was in operation, Kerry would have had a serious shout for the penalty to be awarded.

Not too long after, Kerry were opened up and Wayne Guthrie came flying out of his box, the ball struck his hand and was given a yellow card.

The free kick was placed right on the edge of the box and Jack Doherty rifled it into the bottom corner, putting Kerry two behind.

Kerry kept plugging away at the opposition showing great fight. In the seventy-ninth minute, a superb left-footed effort from Sean O’ Connell was directed over the bar by Steacy, resulting in another corner for Kerry. Even with Kerry’s constant pressure to the last minute, Cobh ran away 2-0 winners.

A great contest was had even with heavy wind conditions that each team would have preferred not to play in. Graham O’Reilly deserves a mention for his fantastic performance, earning him the Man of the Match award.

A fantastic night in the history of Kerry soccer may have been hindered by the result, but it is only the start of a brilliant journey for the Kingdom.

PHOTO: A Night To Remember For Kerry FC Fans Despite The Result

.

IT wasn’t the best of starts, but the first night of League Of Ireland football at Mounthawk Park was an occasion to remember for Kerry FC fans.

Cobh Ramblers left with the points after a 0-2 victory, but Kerry FC can be proud of their performance. They showed enough fight to persuade fans they’re going to be competitive over the forthcoming campaign and they’re worth getting behind.

Hopefully they’ll have full houses for the home games to come, just as they did last night. The fans arrived early for the game with the food vendors and the pop-up club shop seeing a steady stream of customers throughout the evening and plenty of green, white and gold scarves and hats visible in the crowd.

Continued below…

.

All at Kerry FC have to be commended for their professional approach ensuring everything went according to plan with plenty stewards on duty.

The strong wind spoilt the game somewhat, with the visitors coping better and going ahead just before half-time. When they doubled their advantage on 71 minutes the game was up.

The match needed a goal from the home side to truly give the fans something to shout about, but it never materialised and now it’s on to Bray next Friday for the first away outing.

If you can’t make that trip, the next home game is on Friday, March 3 against Treaty United so don’t forget to get your tickets early. Scroll down for photos…

Know Your Rights: Jury Service — What You Need To Know

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

Jury service is when you are instructed to attend court with other members of the public, so the court can select people to sit on juries for upcoming court cases.

Even though you are called for jury service, you may not actually serve on a jury. You have an obligation to attend for jury service if you are called to do so. You will be contacted by summons of the County Registrar, and the summons will state that you are obliged to attend for jury service on a particular date.

Who is eligible for jury service?

If you are an Irish citizen aged 18 and over, and are on the Register of Electors you are eligible for jury service, unless you:

• Are involved in any way with the administration of justice.
• Have, or had, a mental illness or mental disability and because of this are staying in a hospital or similar institution, or regularly attend treatment with a medical practitioner.
• Are unable to read or have a long-term impairment that means it is not practical for you to serve on a jury.

Continued below…

.

Who is disqualified from jury service?

You are disqualified from jury service if you:

• Have been convicted of a serious offence in Ireland.
• Have ever been sentenced to five years or more in prison.
• Have been sentenced to three months or more in prison in the last ten years.
• Are living in Ireland but are not an Irish citizen.

Who has a right to be excused from jury service?

You have the right to be excused from jury service if you:

• Are aged 65 or over.
• Are a member of either House of the Oireachtas, a member of the Council of State, the Comptroller and Auditor General, a Clerk of Dáil Éireann or Seanad Éireann, in Holy Orders, a minister of any religious denomination or community, a member of a monastery or convent, an aircraft pilot, a full-time student or a ship’s .
• Provide an important community service, such as a practising doctor, nurse, midwife, dentist, vet or chemist.
• Have served on a jury in the last three years, or have been excused by a judge for a certain amount of time after a previous period of jury service.

In some cases, people with the following jobs can be excused, however in these cases you must provide certification that your role cannot be postponed or reasonably performed by another person:

• Member of staff of either House of the Oireachtas.
• Head of a government department.
• Civil servant.
• Chief executive officer or employee of a local authority.
• Health Service Executive (HSE) employee.
• Harbour authority employee.
• School teacher.
• University lecturer.

Continued below…

.

What happens if I don’t attend for jury service?

Under the Juries Act 1976, you can be fined for:

• Failing to attend for jury service without a reasonable excuse.
• Being unavailable when called to serve as a juror.
• Being unfit for service by reason of drink or drugs.

Other offences

You can also be fined for other offences in relation to jury service, including:

• Making (or causing to be made) any false representations.
• Serving on a jury knowing you are ineligible or disqualified.
• Giving false or misleading answers to the judge about your qualification for jury service.
• Making (or causing to be made) any false representations about a person summoned as a juror so they don’t have to do jury service.

How is a jury selected?

Jurors are contacted by summons of the County Registrar. You must reply to the jury summons using the form and pre-paid envelope provided. If you have a right to be excused from jury service, you must state this on the form provided.

If you want to be excused for another reason (such as illness), you must state that reason on the form and enclose any certificates or documents in support of your application. The County Registrar will decide if you can be excused, or not.

Continued below…

.

Is there payment for jury service?

You are not paid for jury service and travelling expenses are not allowed. If you are actually serving as a juror, lunch will be provided on the day or days of the trial.

If you are self-employed and work alone and your attendance at jury service means you cannot earn a living, you may qualify to be excused from jury service. Contact the jury office of the court for more information.

If you are signing on for a Jobseeker’s payment you will continue to be paid, but you should advise your local social welfare office that you have been called for jury service.

Can my employer refuse to release me for jury service?

If you are in employment, your employer must let you attend jury service. Time spent on jury service should be treated as if the employee were actually employed. There should also be no loss of any other employment rights while you serve on a jury. You can request a certificate from the jury office to confirm your attendance at jury service.

Does everyone called for jury service serve on a jury?

No. Even though you are called for jury service, you may not actually serve on a jury. Usually more people are called for jury service than are needed. You must return to court each day, whether or not you are sworn onto a jury panel, unless the court tells you to do otherwise.

• For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary.

The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm.  Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www.citizensinformation.ie for further information.

Finnegan On Films: A ‘Titanic’ Anniversary For A Much-Loved Blockbuster

.

As the Oscars approach, our movie guy, James Finnegan, takes a look back at James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’ which swept the boards 25 years ago…

It has always seemed a little bit strange to me that a film that tells of the sinking of the Titanic is considered a romantic film, but perhaps I am just a little old fashioned.

However, James Cameron’s production achieved critical and commercial success since its release in December 1997.  It was the most expensive film ever made at that time with a budget of about $200 million and broke box office records.  It is actually the third highest grossing film of all time.

Kate Winslet as Rose.

Cameron apparently had always been fascinated by shipwrecks, so wrote, produced and directed this version of the famous event.

Continued below…

.

It is said that there was not a facet or job on this film that Cameron did not oversee or take part in, resulting in many stories of, shall we say, creative disputes behind the scenes.  He even did all Jack’s famous sketches!

The film is cleverly surrounded by a modern day search and examination of the wreck, so use of the vessels and equipment used in this served as a base for filming.  Indeed, it was said that Cameron had spent longer on reconnaissance at the wreck than Titanic spent sailing.

Jack and Rose.

However, it is the fictional romance story of Rose (Kate Winslett) and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) that lies at the heart of the story.

Rose De Witt was inspired by aspects of the life of American artist Beatrice Wood, whose biography Cameroon was reading while working on the script.

Continued below…

.

Jack Dawson was a total invention, although it was discovered that there was a J Dawson on board the ship.  This got many excited and even today flowers (and cinema ticket stubs) are left on the grave of Joseph Dawson – a member of the crew who was a coal trimmer, who made certain that the piles of coal shovelled into the ship’s furnaces were level.

However, several real life characters are interwoven into the story, notably Molly Brown (Kathy Bates), Thomas Andrews (Victor Garber) and Captain Edward John Smith (Bernard Hill).

Unfortunately there is no appearance by Titanic’s Doctor, William Francis O’Loughlin, who was actually brought up in Tralee!

Other details that match the records from the time are the elderly couple who decide to stay together on the ship to spend their final moments together, and of course, the band who played on as the ship sank.

.

The spectacular way in which the ship sank is not really technically accurate, but certainly cinematically effective.

However, the turning of First Officer William Murdoch into a baddie by shooting passengers, then himself, resulted in a personal apology from a Fox Vice President to his family.

Continued below…

.

David Warner who played nasty Valet Lovejoy holds the rare distinction of sinking twice on Titanic – this version and a 1979 US TV version.

Winslet and Gloria Stuart were the first dual Oscar nominees for the same role in the same film and were part of a record fourteen nominations for Titanic gaining an eventual eleven wins including Best Picture, Best Director and Original Song for “My Heart will Go On”.

.
