CONGRATULATIONS: to Kirby’s Brogue Inn on being nominated Tralee’s best Cafeteria. Well deserved.
MINOR FOOTBALL: Keel/Listry 0-1; Austin Stacks 1-14.
Not since 2014 when the likes of Jack Morgan, Michael O’Donnell and Jack O’Shea were on the team did our Minors chalk up such a win. That April day nine years ago they held their opposition scoreless. On this Saturday afternoon (4thMarch) in Keel our boys held their opponents scoreless from play – their only score coming from a pointed free in the 3rd minute of the second half. And it wasn’t that the opposition were playing poorly. Every time they attacked they looked dangerous but time after time our boys turned over the attacks. We lead by eight points to no score at half time with seven different players getting on the score sheet.
Both sides had a point each inside the opening three minutes of the second half with Ryan O’Driscoll scoring ours just 23 seconds after the resumption. We then dominated the remainder of the game adding a further goal and five points, Ryan our goal scorer.
Team: Steven Conway, Pádraig O’Halloran (0-1), Donnacha Horgan, Ciarán Kavanagh, Seán Heaslip, Seán Óg Brosnan, Alex Tuohy (0-1), Fionnán Ryan (0-1), Daniel Kirby (Capt) (0-1), Calvin Casey (0-2), Ronan Carroll (0-2), Thomas Deregee, Ryan O’Driscoll (1-4 – two frees), Cormac Bastible (0-1), David Lucid.
Subs used: Jake O’Connor (ht), Jack Barrett (39m) Liam O’Connell (43m), Thomas O’Connell 43m) (0-1), Barry Nagle (52m).
We now have home games in the next two rounds against Kenmare/Shamrocks in round 4 (now switched to Wednesday, 15th March at 6.30pm) and against An Ghaeltacht in the 5thround the day after St. Patrick’s Day, while we still await a decision on our opening round tie against Legion which did not take place.
SENIOR FOOTBALL; With wins against Na Gaeil and John Mitchels in the opening two rounds of the Tralee/St. Brendans League Ardfert have now conceded the round 3 tie. That means we will now play John Mitchels in the Final which has been fixed for next Sunday (12th March) in Blennerville with the throw-in at 12.30pm.
The following week-end (19th March) we were due to play Spa in Connolly Park in the opening round of the Co. League but this game has been put back a week. It has now been refixed for Saturday, 25th March at 4pm.
CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS: The Manor West Leisure Club Scholarships have been announced and our own Joseph O’Connor is one of the five recipients. Congratulations Joe and well done.

CLUB LOTTO: This week’s (6th March.) Jackpot worth €3,400 was not won. The winning numbers were 3, 7, 12, 15. The €20 winners were Damien McLoughlin and Michael O’Donnell, both c/o The Club; James Hussey, c/o PC Books; Brian Morris, c/o Carmel O’Neill and Stacey Enright, c/o Husseys.

Seniors:
We made the short trip to Blennerville this afternoon for round 2 of the Tralee town league and came away convincing winners on a final scoreline of 2-16 to 1-05.
Tom Hoare had the opening score inside the first minutes but St Pats hit back immediately with a goal and followed it up with 3 quickfire points, our only reply being another fine point from Tom.
However, from here until the half time whistle we gradually took over with 3 pointed frees from Darragh O’Connor plus a fine effort from play from Diarmuid O’Sullivan to level matters and this was followed by a well worked goal from Daniel Bowler.
We had three wides on the trot before that man again, Tom Hoare pointed, half time 1-07 to 1-03.
We continued to dictate matters in the 2nd half with our defence on top with TJ Heaphy, Chucky and Ross O’Callaghan well in command and our half forward line of Padraig Griffin, Shane McElligott and Daniel Bowler providing plenty of ammunition for our inside line which saw Conor O’Sullivan ( a half time sub) hitting four points and Shane McElligott billowing the net towards the finish to cap a dominant display.
Scorers: Shane McElligott 1-01, Conor Hayes, Tom Hoare ( 0-04 each), Darragh O’Connor ( 0-03), Daniel Bowler ( 1-0), Diarmuid O’Sullivan, Conor Hayes ( 0-02).
Team: Rob O’Connor, Jake Foley, Ross O’Callaghan, Stephen Nix, Seán Collins, Chucky, TJ Heaphy, Diarmuid O’Sullivan, Tom Hoare, Padraig Griffin, Barry J Keane, Daniel Bowler, Darragh O’Connor, Shane McElligott & Conor Hayes.
As of now, we have no fixture planned for next weekend but there is an outstanding game vs Ballymac which may be penciled in for next weekend – failing that we will play our first county league on weekend of 19th March when newly promoted Castleisland Desmonds will visit Strand Road – our B team will be in action on the same weekend when they play Dr Crokes in Lewis Road – as always, keep an eye on social media platforms for updates.
Victory Social:
It was a night to reminisce, a night to recall and a night to revel.
The club’s victory social held at the resplendent Ballyroe Heights Hotel delivered all of the above and more, as the club celebrated their 2022 achievements in winning the Kerry senior and Munster club championships before narrowly failing to eventual winners Kilmacud Crokes in a January showdown in Croke Park.
The atmosphere crackled as the crowd gathered, old friends reunited, the air filled with congeniality and warmth.
The proceedings went like clockwork, and with everyone seated shortly after 7.30 pm the history makers, led by captain Ross O’Callaghan entered the room as the Black Eyed Peas hit “ Tonight’s going to be a good night” rang out bringing the crowd to its feet in rapturous applause.
Chairman Haulie Kerins welcomed everybody and handed matters over to MC for the night, Denis Hanafin – Denis, in his own inimitable way, conducted proceedings with all the aplomb of an orchestral conductor ensuring everything went to plan ( the air horn and water gun helped too!!)
Guest speakers on the night included Liam Lynch, vice chair of Coiste Chontae Chiarrai and former Uachtaran of Cumann Luthchleas Gael, Ireland South MEP Seán Kelly.
Liam Lynch endeared himself to the crowd with his opening lines of “I am from a small intermediate club on the other side of town” before delivering a well constructed, humorous speech rich in praise of the club’s recent feats whilst lamenting the role of a 33/1 outsider in the Oscars who walked away with best supporting actor – a reference to the harsh sending off of David Moran in the Eire Og encounter.
He lavished praise on David Moran as he departed the inter county scene, likening him to Australian rugby legend John Eales for his mighty feats in the green and gold over 15 years and complimenting him on his leadership, sportsmanship and footballing abilities.
Seán Kelly fondly recalled his time as a juvenile in Strand Road lauding the likes of Johnny Kissane and John Dowling for their great and unstinting work whilst also acknowledging the contributions of Tommy Walsh, Barry John Keane, Jack Savage and David Moran all of whom have won senior All Ireland medals with Kerry in the recent past.
He, acknowledged too, the contribution of Declan Quill who as joint bainisteoir of Kerry ladies has led them to five victories in a row and a place in this year’s national league final.
The players were presented with their medals by Will Harmon and Claire Walsh, and the final presentations of the night were reserved for the outgoing management team for their endeavours over the past 3 years, for their meticulous preparations and overall leadership.
Awards on the night were also made to Ben Hanafin, young player of the year, Shane Foley, most improved and to David Moran, player of the year.
2022 also marked the end of an era, as main club sponsor Kerries Golf Range, no longer operating, was succeeded by Higgins Waste and Recycling with Haulie thanking John, Jackie and Seán for coming on board.
The formalities over, the crowds danced the night away to the music of Brighside and later to the sounds of DJ Manus.
Kerry came up short in Omagh when going down on a scoreline of 1-15 to 2-09 to the locals; it was a game that we looked like winning early on when taking a 3 point advantage towards half time but a strong finish by the homesters saw the sides level at the break.
The second half was nip and tuck but Tyrone got the vital scores when it mattered to take the league points on offer. Kerry next play Roscommon on March 18th under lights in Austin Stack Park where throw in is @ 19.30
Limerick with Mark Fitzgerald on their coaching ticket registered their first points in Division 2 when gaining a very credible draw with Meath on a final scoreline of 0-17 to 2-11.

Juveniles:
Another great week in our Juvenile Academy with great numbers in attendance throughout the age groups. To facilitate Coaches & Parents attending the Victory Social last Saturday Night, Juvenile training took place as follows last week:
U5 Boys & U6 Girls training took place on Saturday, they enjoyed a fun filled session with their coaches having great fun while incorporating the key skills of football throughout their training. We have a great bunch in each group and look forward to watching them develop over the years.
U7 & U9s boys training took place on Thursday evening. The boys were delighted with their training session which involved some fantastic drills and skills based learning but also having fun while doing so. They finished with a short game to put their skills to practice.
U8 Girls and U10 Girls trained Thursday evening. Their coaches had a great session planned out for each group. Starting off with a fun warm up involving running and jumping. They were
focusing on their agility and soloing skills but also ensuring the girls were having fun doing this. Each girl gave it 100% and enjoyed their training session.
Our juvenile Academy will return to the normal time of 10am to 11am from next Sunday 12th March in Ballyrickard for the rest of the season. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Ballyrickard on Sunday morning. New members are always welcome to join our fantastic club you can contact us by
U11 Boys training took place on Thursday evening. There were great numbers in attendance and they enjoyed a great day including new drills set out by their coaches to enhance their skills. They finished with a short game at the end putting their skills to practice.
U13 Boys – played Ballymac on Sunday the result from the game went the way of our opponents Ballymac with a scoreline of 5-8 to 3-4.
There were lots of positives from the game, lots of possession and ball in hand so we’ll hopefully turn that possession into scores in the coming games, great effort by all our players. Evan Griffin and Caden O’Sullivan were both outstanding. Our next game is this Thursday 9th March in Ballyrickard at 5.30pm. See you all then.
Minors:
We played Dr Crokes in Killarney last Thursday evening.
We got off to a bad start conceding 2 early goals but were very competitive throughout. We finished with a score of 4-10 thanks to great work by our forwards. Our mid field grew into the game and helped us get within a few points of the opposition as the second half progressed.
Our momentum was halted by a goal for Crokes and that really ended our comeback. This team is learning a great deal playing in Division 2 and while the results aren’t going our way progress is positive and we have many players who are showing signs of improvement every week.
Please ensure you have paid your membership through clubzap. We have posted a short video on our Facebook and Instagram account to assist you in downloading the app and paying membership.
We will be using clubzap for all communication regarding your child’s group.

ONE GOOD COACH
Many thanks to Frank O’ Rahilly of Jigsaw Kerry who delivered a very interesting workshop on “One Good Coach “ for all in our club.
This is one of the areas that Karon McLysaght who is involved with the ladies in Strand Road felt should be organised so as to provide information to our coaches on something we all have but probably don’t discuss- mental health and it’s importance for all ages!
Jigsaw Kerry is part of the National Jigsaw network . This organisation supports young people’s mental health .As well as providing a service for 12 to 25 year olds to receive support in relation to mental health concerns, they also provide information and support to young people, adults, clubs and communities who
•would like to increase their knowledge
•would like to have the ability to support young people’s mental health.
Positive wellbeing allows young people to flourish , to develop and maintain meaningful relationships , to care for oneself, to learn and to contribute to society.
The Jigsaw community have a shared belief in an Ireland where every young person’s mental health is valued and supported to allow them reach their best potential.
One of the many services they also provide is “Jigsaw Live Chat / Support for Young People “ See https://jigsaw.ie/talk-online/live-chat/ for more information.
A great turnout! Thank you to everyone!
Now we can all be the coach we needed when we were younger thanks to Jigsaw’s Frank O’ Rahilly. It was a privilege to have you join us last week.

Under 14 Girls
Training for the John Mitchels under 14 girls continues with a strong turnout from the players every night. With the benefit of the winter programme of Strength & Conditioning apparent, the girls are now concentrating on ball-work and replicating match-play scenarios during training.
It is refreshing to see the quality and skills being shown by the u12 girls who have come into the u14 ranks for the first time this year and there is a determination by all players to progress, as individuals and as a team.
The bond and team spirit between the players is excellent as well, and training sessions have been focused, but with plenty of laughter and enjoyment as well. Training times for March have changed, with the u14s now training on Monday nights 6-7pm and Thursday nights 7-8pm. The coaches will be organizing challenge games over the coming weeks in preparation for the County League.
Under 16 Girls
Great week overall with high numbers. At Monday night’s training the team worked on fitness, soloing more of a skill-based session back to basics style. The club is delighted to welcome coach Ava Buckley who has joined our Under 16 Management Team. Ava is also a senior player with John Mitchels and took her first training session Friday night.
Under 9 Boys
This week once again saw fantastic numbers for John Mitchels under Boys. With the weather being so good meant we could train on our Astro Pitch giving our young stars loads of room to move around. It’s fantastic to see our young stars
improving each week already. Training for John Mitchels U9 Boys continues every Sunday from 9.45am sharp Gumshields & water essential. Any new players are very welcome.
Under 11 Boys
There was a huge turn out this morning for our U11’s training session where players worked on the core skills of the game and our buys showed great skill and determination. Fun was had by all which is really encouraging for the year ahead.
Under 13 Boys
Our U13 Green team put an impressive score line on the board with Na Gaeil struggling to cope with a dominant Mitchels backline, with a commanding performance by our midfield and forwards.
The full backline got on top early and never let up and the half backline was a launch pad for our forwards who were imperious to a man. The midfield offering support going both directions topped off a great day for the boys.
Congratulations to Ahmed and Marcus who made their debut for the club. There was a spirited and determined performance from our U13 Gold team against Na Gaeil where both teams battled hard.
There was a good performance from the entire team with a special mention to thirteen of out U11 boys who battled hard. Thanks to our Na Gaeil neighbours for the challenge games which were played with great spirit and sportsmanship by both teams. Training continues again on Friday at 6pm. New players always welcome.
Under 15 Boys
Last Wednesday evening we were back on the pitch for our 3rd training session with Alan O’Donoghue leading the coaching session. One of the benefits of registering as a playing member of the GAA or LGFA via the Club is that in the event of an injury sustained playing or training resulting in medical expenses it may be possible to claim a level of refund from the GAA or LGFA Injury Benefit Fund. However, any player seeking to benefit from the Injury Benefit Fund must be a registered member of the GAA or LGFA on Foireann at the time of injury.
The respective Injury Benefit Funds are self-funded entirely from the GAA and LGFA funds with no outside involvement. The Injury Funds are not an insurance scheme. The Injury Funds are set up to assist members with some reimbursement for medical expenses incurred due to an injury sustained playing Gaelic football.
The respective Injury Benefit Funds do not seek to compensate fully for injuries sustained but to supplement other Schemes such as Personal Accident or Health Insurance. The GAA and LGFA Schemes only provide cover for unrecoverable losses up to the limits specified under the respective Schemes. Alan Cantwell reports on the InsureMyVan.ie Men’s Super League 2022/2023 – Round 18 match played in Dublin on Saturday night…
UCD Marian 70
Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 88
Garvey’s Tralee Warriors have given themselves every chance to secure a place in the Super League playoffs as they easily accounted for UCD Marian by 88-70 at the Belfield Sports Centre last night.
Allied to their win, their nearest rivals EnergyWise Ireland Neptune suffered somewhat of a shock defeat to Griffith College Templeogue who took the Cork side to task at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght to win by 30 points.
Neptune’s loss means that next Saturday night’s game is now just a straight win or lose and the Warriors no longer have to bridge a 10 point difference in scores to eclipse their 9 point defeat to Neptune in Cork earlier in the season.
Continued below…
The action in Belfield got off to a blistering start with both teams happy to make it a straight shootout.
The sides hit a combined eleven three pointers in an incredible first quarter with Daniel Jokubaitis and Jonathan Jean turning the period into a private three point duel.
It was Jean that kept the hosts in the game early as the Warriors set about imposing themselves on the contest and by the time Jokubaitis hit his fourth three, added to by efforts from Matija Jokic, Dre Jackson and Eoin Quigley, the visitors led 19-8.
However the Warriors were held scoreless for the remainder of the quarter with Marian turning the tables with two threes from Matthew McGrath, another from Ronan Byrne and a 10 point salvo from Jean saw the hosts lead 27-19 at quarter time.
The second quarter was a more tempered affair and Sortris Miltiadis edged Marian further ahead early on but Rich Dunham replied immediately with a major score for the Warriors and when Jokic and Jackson hit back to back threes, Marian Coach Ioannis Liapakis called an urgent timeout.
Continued below…
It had the desired effect as the hosts finished the quarter the stronger with McGrath and Byrne on the mark either side of another Jokubaitis special and at the long break Marian with a 40-35 lead were still the team to beat.
The half time break reinvigorated the Warriors and they came out with a relentless offensive assault on the Marian rear-guard hitting scores from all angles to effectively put the contest beyond the reach of the college side.
Quigley, Jokic, Jokubaitis and Jackson simply had their way with Marian who could not live with the Warriors onslaught. Jean continued to spark for the hosts with scores from inside and out but they were purely token efforts as the Warriors took total control of the contest.
Jokic knocked down a belter of a three to give the Warriors a double digit lead before Steven Bowler and Dunham added four from four from the line and right on the buzzer Keelan Crowe landed a tough shot to see the Tralee side 66-51 up at the end of the third.
The Warriors kept the scoreboard ticking over early in the fourth with Quigley and Dunham stretching their advantage out to 76-53.
Ronan Byrne and Jean kept the home side in touch but when Dunham and Jack Tobin both arced in major scores the gap was out to 25.
Jean, who was impressive throughout the contest for Marian, added from either side of the arc to bring his personal tally on the night to 35.
Jokic and Jokubaitis quickly replied to maintain the wide margin but David Nash, Ronan Byrne and Dimitrios Theocharis were in range late to put a slightly better look to the final scoreline of 88-70.
Scorers: UCD Marian: Jonathan Jean 35, Ronan Byrne 14, David Nash and Sotiris Miltiadis 4
Garvey’s Tralee Warriors – Daniel Jokubaitis 23, Matija Jokic 17, Rich Dunham 17
The equation for Warriors has become a little clearer and a little more favourable after the action over the weekend.
It was assumed that Neptune would continue their run of wins but with defeat in Tallaght they are now on the same number of wins as Warriors going into the final round game next weekend. As it stands the winners of the final game showdown in Tralee next week will make the playoffs.
There are permutations still to work themselves out to sort out the final standings but Saturday night was a good night at the office for John Dowling’s charges – next Saturday night has the potential to be even better.
The final round of action in the InsureMyVan.ie Men’s Super League sees Garvey’s Tralee Warriors host EnergyWise Ireland in a winner take all clash at the Tralee Sports Complex. A bumper crowd is expected so the advice is to get to the venue early. Tip off next Saturday night is at 7.30pm.
Alan Cantwell reports on the Men’s U20 National League 2022/2023 – Quarter Final held on Sunday in Tralee Sports Complex…
Tralee Warriors 88
Maree 80
With their senior counterparts looking to make the final eight in Super League next weekend, the Warriors U20s negotiated their way past Maree to secure their place in the final four of the National League by winning out 88-80 in an entertaining and full blooded encounter at the Tralee Sports Complex on Sunday.
Both sides gave everything in a tight battle but an early scoring blitz from the hosts in each of the third and fourth quarters gave them the edge to see out the win in the end.
The sides went score for score early and a hat trick of baskets from Warriors senior player Aivaras Ousis was added to by Donal O’Sullivan but Maree levelled with scores from Comhghail McCormack, Evan O’Rourke and Jake Morris.
Continued below…
Maree pushed on with three scores from Ben Burke and Morris to lead by 8 but Eddie Sheehy, Eoin Creedon and Ousis reeled the visitors in to edge ahead.
However the Galway outfit finished the quarter in style with a double from McCormack either side of a lay-up from Huw Bevan to lead 24-21 at quarter time.
Gary Lynch fired in from distance early in the second for the Warriors but Maree increased their quarter time advantage through the impressive McCormack with a double and another from Bevan to lead 32-27.
Daniel Bowler got into his scoring rhythm with three typical efforts from under the board and when Eddie Sheehy meandered his way to the Maree board the sides were level.
However Maree again finished the quarter in the ascendancy with McCormack in range from both sides of the arc and a floated effort from Ben Burke giving the visitors a deserved 40-35 lead at half time.
Continued below…
The Warriors cut loose early in the third and another couple of scores from Bowler either side of an inside score from O’Sullivan was added to by a stunning three from Ousis to see the hosts take the lead again.
Maree responded well with Morris and O’Rourke combining for a quick fire 10 points but a double each from Bowler and Ousis kept the Warriors in front.
Evan O’Rourke fired in from inside and out but Ousis had the final say in the quarter with two cracking three points efforts to see the Warriors lead by 60-57 at the end of the third.
Eoin Creedon pushed the Warriors further ahead in the fourth with two brilliant identical corner threes and Ousis backed that up with a floated two to put double digits between the teams.
The Warriors went for kill after McCormack and O’Rourke cut the gap back to single figures and the relentless Ousis chalked up his fourth and fifth major scores of the evening to spread the game completely.
However Maree had no intention of giving the Warriors safe passage to the semi-final and McCormack and Behan combined to halve the advantage.
Bowler steadied the Warriors ship again and when Adam O’Keeffe entered to fray to knock down a three the lead was back out to 18. In a frantic finale Maree went on a late scoring spree that saw them land the last 10 points of the game.
However it was too little too late as the Warriors lead was simply too big and in the end the hosts held on to see out the win and secure their place in the National League semi-final.
Scorers: Tralee Warriors – Aivaras Ousis 32, Daniel Bowler 22, Eddie Sheehy 12
Maree: Evan O’Rourke 25, Comhghail McCormack 24, Ben Burke 12
