SAFEGUARDING 1 WORKSHOP.

The GAA is committed to creating and maintaining the safest possible environment for all children who wish to take part in its games and activities.  As part of that commitment the Club hosted a Safeguarding 1 training event in the Clubhouse in Connolly Park on the 9th May last.  This training is a legal requirement for any individual who wishes to be involved in the coaching of children.  The training was organised by Dr Órlaith Griffin, the Club’s Children’s Officer, and was facilitated by Colette Murphy, GAA Safeguarding Tutor.  A number of coaches across various age groups actively participated in the training which was excellently received.

SENIOR FOOTBALL

Our Seniors travel to Dingle on this coming Sunday (21st May)for a 2pm start in round 7 of the Co. League. With a game on hand Dingle are currently 7th on the League table while we are in 9th position.

B FOOTBALL. Ballylongford 0-5; Austin Stacks 2-16.

In a very breezy but dry Ballylongford on last Sunday afternoon (14th May) our B team notched up their first Co. League points of the season with a good win over the home side. It was 1-8 to no score at half time with the elements in our favour during that first half.  However, our score was exactly the same in the second half (1-8) to 0-5 for the opposition. With three defeats and a draw in our opening four rounds the result had no effect on our position on the League Table which stands second from bottom. And the result in our final game of the League (at home to Duagh on this coming Sunday at 2pm) will not change that position. It was good however to see a far better display by our boys on this occasion which augers well for the forthcoming Championship.

Team: Ben Quilter, Ruairí O’Connell, John Murphy (Capt), Luke Casey, Joe Reidy, Dean Rusk, Evan Foley (0-1), Ciarán O’Connell, Cillian Litchfield, Gearóid Sheehan (0-1), Jordan Kissane, Pa McCarthy (0-1), Conor Myers (0-2 – one free), Calvin Foley (0-4 – one free), Damien Hogan (1-4 – one free).

Subs used: Greg Scanlon (ht), Andrew Morrissey (ht), Donnacha Sayers (42m) (0-2), Noah Townsend (42m) (1-1), Dean Scanlon (42m).

U21 FOOTBALL: Connolly Park is the venue on this Wednesday evening (17th May) for our meeting against South Kerry in the opening round of this knock-out Co. Championship. Throw-in is at 7pm with a result on the night. Best of luck to our whole squad.

THE C TEAM: We have two more round to play in the Co. League – away to O’Rahillys on the week-end after next and at home to Laune Rangers on w/e 18th June.

THE D TEAM: With just one round played so far (a brilliant win against Scartaglin (5-14 to 1-1) our D team have still two back games to play both away against Duagh and Beaufort with two more rounds after that – at home to Tarbert on the weekend after next and away to Clounmacon on w/e 18th June.

CLUB CARDS: Our Card sessions continue in the Clubhouse on Mondays and Thursdays with the starting time of 9pm sharp.

CLUB LOTTO: This week’s (15th May) Jackpot worth €3,900 was not won. The winning numbers were 1, 10, 14, 15. The €20 winners were Tom Quilter, TJ & Mary Sheehan, Paudie Barrett and Colm Mangan, all c/o The Club; and Orla Foley, c/o OnLine.

U16 Camogie

The U16 camogie squad are going from strength to strength with every game this season.  On Thursday evening they came away with a win against a strong Killarney side in the County League. Many thanks to Killarney for a good competitive game. Well done to all players involved.  The team will have a break now until after the exams but will continue training.

Minor Hurling

Our Minors kicked off their Division 1 County League campaign last week with matches on Thursday vs Crotta/Kilmoyley and on Sunday vs Ballyduff. Unfortunately due to injuries to key players as well as unavailability of others, we fielded weakened teams for both fixtures and some of our U15s stepped in at short notice.

Despite this, the team put in a great effort and while not coming away with a result in either match, they gave a very good account of themselves. Last match in the league is vs St Brendans and hopefully we will be able to welcome back our injured players for this match.

Senior Men

Mitchels 2-13
Listry 0-9

Lovely afternoon for a game as our senior men came away with a deserved victory in a sometimes-feisty affair against a teak tough opposition.

Our quick attacking football caused all sorts of problems for the Listry defence with Conor Hurley cracking in a great goal after a brilliant run from half back and with barely five minutes gone, we were 1-2 to 0-0 and full value for it.

Our lines of running were superb in particular James Duggan and Mikey Kelliher making great runs and scoring from them and with Alan Donoghue pulling the strings at half forward it kept the opposition on their toes.

George Bastible covering some good ground with a workmanlike performance and Shane Connor making a couple of bursts from defence was unlucky not to score from the subsequent attacks. However, we deservedly went in to lead at half time 1-7 to 0-5.

The second half started in the same vein with quick ball from defence through the lines and into our forwards who stretched the Listry defence and created some good scoring opportunities for our forwards.

Cian Holden ran all day and got his reward with a lovely long-range effort and it was he who ably assisted for our second goal as he rounded his man and hand passed across the goal to Mikey Kelliher who buried to the net putting the game beyond the reach of our opponents.

Great to see the young guns Tyrese Flaherty, Rory Clifford and Brian O Donnell coming on in the second half with Brian winning some great ball in defence and ensuring every pass was inch perfect to his team mates.

Our defence was immense again in the second half with some great turnover ball especially the Whyte brothers making some brilliant tackles and Akeem Molloy driving out at every opportunity to put Listry on the back foot.

Pat Kearney also caught a couple of kick outs with Peter Murphy the same ensuring we kept possession from the opposition and minimized their ability to attack.
Well done to Mentors and squad – well take two points away from home any day.

Senior Men Development League.

Our senior development team will play Dingle at home on May 28th. Time to be confirmed. Stay tuned for more information.

Senior Ladies

The Senior Ladies squad held two very well attended training sessions on Thursday and Sunday last where the focus was on both fitness and the skills of the game on Thursday evening and on fitness and the tactical side of the game at the Sunday morning session.

Training continues this Thursday at 7.15 in preparation for our next game in the Donal Curtin Cup which will be a home game v an Annascaul/Castlegregory combination.  The fixture is currently pencilled in for Sunday the 28th of May.

We welcomed a couple of our injured personnel back at last week’s training and have still a few players waiting to return to competitive action.

As always, new players are welcome to join where they will be made very welcome and hopefully will make new friends and improve both their fitness levels and football skills.  A quick reminder for any player that is unable to attend either training or games to simply please notify us by a quick simple message.

Catch the coach,  dodgeball and stuck in the mud were the games of the day Sunday morning.
All the boys and girls tried their hearts out, and accordingly we ended the session with tired young players and exhausted coaches.
We had great fun and it’s brilliant to see the improvement in the solo and kicking.

Under 12 Girls

On Wednesday evening, the girls welcomed Dingle for the div 4 North Kerry Ladies League Shield Final. Captained by Natalia Henning. Our girls put up an amazing display of football and teamwork was incredible. Unfortunately, it was not our night but the girls should be extremely proud of themselves. Training continues Sunday 12-1 & Wednesday 7-8 . New comers welcome

u14 Girls who played away to Shannonside Tarbert on Thursday evening.

Under 14 Girls

Shannonside Tarbert 2-5John Mitchels 1-1

John Mitchels u14 gold team made the long trip to Tarbert on Thursday evening, but it wasn’t to be against a strong North Kerry side who made home advantage count.
Despite strong performances from the team, particularly Faye Moloney, Katelyn Laide, Dionne Rogers and Tara Dowling, Mitchels didn’t have the same scoring threat as Tarbert.
Training continues this week as the Green team prepare for their Co League Final.

Under 16 girls

The U16 Girls were in action V Na Gaeil away in the County League on Monday last.
Na Gaeil was no doubt going to provide a hard-fought Game for the Girls. Both sides started strongly with our back line under a great deal of pressure keeping Na Gaeil from excelling on the scoreboard.

The girls dispossessed at crucial times with a great save from our Goalie Grace O’Regan. Ava Sugrue having a stand out performance organizing the backs and pushing hard on the defence to get some hard-earned turnovers. Our back line held up under some serious pressure in the first half carrying great football into midfield were our forwards capitalized with scores coming from Kerri Falvey & Ellie O’Rahilly.

At half time we drew 1-03 to 0-06. Making two sub changes before the half. The girls went back out in second half with the wind in our favour. Initially the girls were struggling to retain kickout possession after some organizing, they kicked off 5 minutes later finding our feet with Bridget Stewart working immensely in midfield soaking up the possession and feeding some fabulous football into the forwards.

A well taken free by Brid O’Shea put us in front. Na Gaeil fought back and got scores on the board this was set to be a tight game for John Mitchels girls. They fought hard bringing on subs who did brilliant work and got on the ball from the get go.
Scores from Megan Noonan & Lisa O’Shea narrowed the gap. The last blow of the whistle 2-08 to 0-11. The girls got their first win in the County League. Well done to all players and coaches.

u9 boy who travelled to stacks on a fabulous Sunday morning for go games. Well done to both teams’ excellent football on display.

Under 9 boys

John Mitchels U9 Boys were away to Austin Stacks on Sunday morning for some non-competitive Go Games & despite being down in numbers due to Communion Mass’s our lads gave a great account of themselves with some fantastic footballing skills coming from both sides. We done to all involved & huge thanks to Austin Stacks for organising a great morning’s football.

Under 11 boys

The u 11 boys had no game this week so we trained Thursday and Sunday. On Thursday’s session we had a full in-house game to mirror our regular matches. It was fierce competitive and it was great to see everyone getting stuck in. Our Sunday session revolved around fitness and the core skills of the game. Hopefully within the next few weeks we will be back in action in our Phase 2 of our County Go Games.

u13 boys’ gold team who played against Na Gaeil on Sunday evening. Well done on the victory boys.

Under 13 Boys

The U13 Gold team won with the help of some great scoring and great defending. Our Keeper Rian Moynihan was imperious and held Na gael to a solitary 1:01 in the first half, we battled into a 7-point lead in the second but credit to the men from Kileen who fought back to within a point after we made some changes. A final score of 2:08 to 2:07 was the result.

u13 boys’ green team who played against Na Gaeil on Sunday evening. Well done boys on your victory.

The Green team took on Na Gael, a team who are in fine form, and off the back of some good results, one of which included a win against ourselves in phase 1.

We came in at the break all square at 6 points apiece but the men from Mitchels turned up the temperature and Na Gael weren’t able to answer the questions. We ran out comprehensive winners with too many excellent performances to mention anyone in particular.

Na Gael fought hard for the entirety of the game but our lads never took a step back and claimed a 12-point win on a scoreline of 3:11 to 0:08points.

Under 15 Boys

On Wednesday evening last the boys played Firies  at home in the league semi-final. the boys found it tough to get going from the outset and ended up losing out by a point in the end. Very disappointing for all involved but there will be better days ahead. The gold team have their league semi-final fixture against Listowel on Monday the 15th in Ballyseedy all support greatly appreciated.

Minors
The minors played their 2nd game Monday evening against a strong Desmond’s side. At half time the boys were up by a few points and playing well the second half was tough going as Desmond’s stepped up the game and finished very strong . Winning by a good margin . The boys are playing  Castlegregory away on Thursday 18th at 7pm sharp.

Senior Mens Co. League: Round 6 of the County League saw our lads make the trip to Cahirciveen to play St Marys yesterday. Both teams were in need of a win so the game was keenly contested from the start.

St Marys played with the aid of the breeze in the first half and were 3 points to nil ahead after 12 minutes. Na Gaeil had plenty possession but were finding it hard to get ball into our forwards.

Eventually a point from Kieran O’Connor got us on the scoreboard. Five minutes later Dara Devine converted a free to leave us trailing by just a point. But St Marys upped their game and using the wind to good effect they reeled off 3 points in a row to lead 6 points to 2.

As the game approached halftime Dara Devine was on hand to kick our 3rd point and crucially it was a point from Seán O’Connor in injury time that reduced the deficit at halftime to a very manageable 2 points.

That first half was notable for the dominance of Devon Burns in goals as he made 3 or 4 great catches to cut out dangerous attacks from St Marys.

The second half started brilliantly for our lads as they notched 3 points without reply in the first 5 minutes, one each from Andrew Barry and Kieran O’Connor and a free from birthday boy Dara Devine which left us in the lead for the first time.

A free from former Kerry player Bryan Sheehan soon followed and the game was level. The same player, despite being the St Marys goalkeeper, went downfield and kicked a point from play to put the Marys back in front, 8 points to 7.

St. Marys added a point from play and a free to push them ahead by 3 points mid-way through the half. Crucially for us Ben O’Donoghue from St Marys picked up a black card and Na Gaeil used the numerical advantage to add a free from Devon Burns & 2 points from play from Dara Devine to level the game with 7 minutes remaining.

As the clock ran down Na Gaeil kicked 2 wides in a row and it seemed we might have to settle for a draw. However our lads forced a turnover in midfield and moved the ball quickly to Kieran O’Donovan.

He fed Dara Devine about 25 yards out from the St Mary’s goal. Dara was quick to notice that the goalkeeper was missing & he coolly slotted it home for the only goal of the game.

Immediately afterwards Jack Sheehan added an insurance point to leave the final score St Marys 0-10, Na Gaeil 1-11.

Team: Devon Burns, Ruairí O’Sullivan, Niall O’Mahony, Jimi O’Suilleabháin, Fergal Barry, Damien Bourke, Ryan O’Neill, Jamsie O’Connor, Tomás O’hAiniféin, Seán O’Connor, Andrew Barry (C), Kieran O’Donovan (VC), Kieran O’Connor, Dara Devine, Jack Sheehan. Subs: John Kearney, Eoin O’Neill, Kian Sheehan, Seamus Looney, Eoghan Daly, Shane Kelly, Shawn Duggan, Jack Doyle, Shane Daly, Jack Bourke, Declan Cooney, Rory Murphy, Paul Burke, Tadhg Reen.

U5 Boys & Girls: New members are always welcome. Contact Denis on 087-2808719.

U7 Boys & Girls: We had a great attendance at U7’s training yesterday morning. The boys & girls practiced their soloing, hand passing, defending, kicking skills and finished with a game. Keep up the great work and don’t forget to keep up the practice during the week. Training continues Thursday evening at 6pm.

U11 Boys: Well done to our under 11 boys who had a tough training session yesterday morning. The session concentrated on hand passing and using the weaker leg before some mini matches at the end. The boys are looking forward to the next phase of the county league at home to Kenmare on Thursday at 6.30pm.

U13 A Boys: Na Gaeil A 0-8, John Mitchel’s A 3-10. The newly crowned Division 1 winners of Phase 1 of the county league came crashing down to earth with defeat at home last night.

In a game that that was level at 6 points each at the break, a sluggish second half meant that the visitors came away with the spoils in a score-line that probably didn’t reflect the difference between the sides.

A tricky cross wind meant that scores were at a minimum in the opening half and exchanges were tit for tat as both teams felt out the opposition.

Eoin Tansley clipped two lovely points in the first half in which, Donagh O’Connell, Andy Costello and Dean O’Leary played well.

Ben O’Sullivan was picking out lovely short kickouts but we turned over possession that was very unlike how we’ve played all year. An injury to O’Leary at the back and compounded with Mitchel’s players winning their individual battles, meant that the home side had to go for broke.

Despite the best efforts of Costello, Nathan Anthony and James Kelly our visitors made hay with the open spaces that had to be left in search of scores and ran out deserving winners.

We are all always proud of what our lads do and as the saying goes; “win or learn”!. Training on Tuesday and Thursday 6-7pm and both teams welcome Legion on Sunday 21st May.

Team Ben O’Sullivan, James Kelly, Dean O’Leary, Rory John O’Brien, Jake Barrett, Philip Doyle, Joe Field, Eoin Tansley, Tom Slattery, Aaron O’Donovan, Danny Brick, Eoin Hannon, Nathan Anthony, Andy Costello, Donagh O’Connell, Luca Cronin, Seán O’Connell, Conor Reidy.

U13 B Boys: Na Gaeil B 3-5, John Mitchel’s B 3-6. In a cracking contest in Killeen yesterday evening our Green team lost by the minimum to John Mitchels. The visitors played all the football in a tricky cross-wind in the first half and had us under pressure in most areas at the start of the game.

After a slow start Eoin O’Connor and Ephrem Falvey got to grips with the opposition and halted the visitors domination. The work rate from Luca Cronin, Conor Reidy and in particular Jonathan Sheehy at centre-forward began to slow the Mitchels domination and kept the game a contest going into the break, however we still trailed 2-4 to 1-1 at the break.

Na Gaeil came out a different side in the second period and burst into life with goals from Sheehy and Paddy Hennessy. Ruairí Coakley, Seán Óg Murphy and Seán O’Connell were outstanding as the game came into its final stages. Na Gaeil were a point down as the game entered its final minutes when the drama ramped up.

Ever dependable Hennessy bagged a goal, Cronin with a point and with two minutes to go we went two up, only for the visitors to reply with a goal of their own. At the stroke of full time the Na Gaeil men thought they won the game with a goal, only for the umpire to signal a wide.

Final score Na Gaeil 3-5, John Mitchels 3-6. Kudos to Ruairí Coakley and Corey Kinsella who played their first game this year, both played well and have will have great days in green ahead.

Well done to the referee, all players and to Mitchel’s for a super game of football. Team; Seán O’Connell, Seán Óg Murphy, Ephrem Falvey, Eoin O’Connor, Jude Doyle, Dylan McCarthy, Ruairí Coakley, Conor Reidy, Luca Cronin, Kieran Feely, Jonathan Sheehy, Paddy Hennessey, Corey Kinsella, Adam Fitzgerald.

U15 A Boys: Our U15A team played Austin Stacks last Wednesday evening in their home semifinal of Division 2 Co. League. Against the breeze in the first half we exchanged scores and made it 0-1 to 0-1 after 5 mins.

Our point came from a great 45 by Fionn Daly. Gearóid Moynihan was outstanding at full back and contested every ball that was sent his way. Donncha Hartnett and Jack Kelly were off his shoulder every time and tidied up everything inside the 20m line. Cillian Griffin in the centre-back position again commanded the half back line and his bursts through the centre opened up the middle numerous times.

Stacks had a purple patch and managed 2-01 up to the 20 minute mark of the first half. To our credit we kept the score board ticking with points from Danny Kingston who responded to each of the Stacks goals with a ball over the bar leaving the score line 2-02 to 0-3.

The next ten minutes we improved and our midfield pairing of Samson Abubakar and Brian Heaphy got on a lot more ball feeding our forwards who delivered.

Danny Kingston put in a dangerous ball to the square and a brilliant run by Fionn Daly distracted the keeper and the ball went uncontested into the net. Another good ball into the inside line meant Danny put the ball across the square for Ryan Sheehy who fisted into the net.

Leading now by 0-1 it was Stacks who levelled it up at halftime leaving it 2-03 to 2-03. To be fair to Stacks they would have been a little disappointed going in level at halftime as it was Jacob Drzymala in goals for us, just returned from injury, who made three great saves to keep us in touch in the first half.

Our boys started really well in the second half and showed a desire for winning through their huge work rate. Half backs Sean Óg O’Conor and Philip McEneaney were up and down the lines all night always creating chances and being available for the ball.

Shane O Donavon and Brian Reidy were as ever industrious around the middle eight helping out midfield and with their tackles and turnovers again fed the inside line.

It was points in this half that made the difference and Danny Kingston again delivered kicking three frees and three from play. Samson also added one to the points tally.

Darragh Callaghan at corner forward was involved in nearly every play in this second half and along with Ryan Sheehy and Fionn Daly they never stopped getting involved in the play.

Stacks to their credit kept fighting all the way through but a fantastic run by Samson Abubakar through the middle finishing the ball in the net probably put us out of sight.

Seniors:

Round 6 saw us take on Rathmore on their home patch and in an overall disappointing display it was the locals who came out on top on a final scoreline of 1-13 to 0-12.

We had two changes from the starting XV with both Con Barrett and Diarmuid O’Sullivan sidelined resulting in Stephen Nix & Tom Hoare coming into the side – Shane Brosnan went to centre back in the reshuffle with Tom Hoare being a direct replacement for Diarmuid at midfield.

Rathmore played with the stiff breeze in the opening half and the sides were deadlocked after the first quarter at 0-03 each with David Moran and Darragh O’Connor converting frees and Conor Hayes  having our only score from play in this period.

We were finding it difficult to gain a foothold  around the middle as Rathmore dictated matters via Cathal Ryan & Darragh Rahilly but too often we coughed up hard won possession through a combination of errors and at times sloppiness.

Defensively we were solid with the McElligotts, Darragh and Shane and Ben Hanafin prominent.

The decisive score arrived in the 19th minute when Rathmore wing back and former Kerry minor, Brian Friel sallied up from wing back to give Shane Foley no chance with a rasping shot to the corner of the net – Rathmore quickly followed up with a point from wing forward Darragh Nagle and though Darragh and Gearóid replied with two minors, Rathmore finished the half the stronger with two points of their own to lead by 1-07 to 0-05 at the break.

We were unlucky perhaps not to get a goal of our own when David played a quick free into the arms of Conor Hayes but his shot was well smothered by the Rathmore keeper.

The second half continued in much the same vein with Rathmore keeping us at arms length and negating scores with points of their own – however we had cut the deficit to 3 points by the 18th minute with scores from Tommy (2), Shane McElligott and Barry John – 1-09 to 0-09.

However, Rathmore notched 3 of the next four points, Tommy being our only scorer in the 25th minute when firing over and Rathmore did enough in the final minutes to hold onto the points.Indeed but for an outstanding save from Shane Foley in the 20th minute, when he saved in a one on one situation, the margin would have been greater.

The final minutes saw the referee issue a straight red card to a Rathmore defender who seemed to strike out at Barry John and also a 2nd yellow for BJ who, it must be said, was the subject of much off the ball attention.

Team: Shane Foley, Jake Foley, Darragh McElligott, Stephen Nix, Shane McElligott (0-01), Shane Brosnan, Ben Hanafin, David Moran ( 0-02), Tom Hoare, Seán Walsh, Barry John Keane ( 0-01), Gearóid Dillane ( 0-01), Darragh O’Connor ( 0-03), Tommy Walsh ( 0-03), Conor Hayes ( 0-01).

Subs used: Padraig Griffin & Daniel Bowler.

Our attention now turns to round 7 when we play Gneeveguilla next Friday night ( 19th)  away where throw-in is @ 19.30.

Div 6A:

Defeat was our lot on Saturday night in Strand Road when beaten by Fossa on a scoreline of 3-13 to 1-14.

Despite playing with the breeze in the first half and winning an amount of possession,we found ourselves three in arrears at the short whistle, 1-07 to 0-07.

Fossa were more economical in possession and scored some fine points through their centre forward and full forward – the crucial goal came in the 22nd minute when they broke through our defence leaving goalkeeper Rob O’Connor with no chance of saving the shot – Fossa seemed better able to exploit the space afforded by playing 13 a side and were good value for their half time lead.

The opening score of the 2nd half was a Fossa goal and a heavy defeat looked on the cards; however, with Ben O’Brien and Fenton Collins now ruling the roost at midfield, Sam Pituch in control at full back we fought our way back into the game and hit 1-05 without reply with good scores coming from Gearoid Savage (2), Seán Griffin and a superb effort from Ben O’Brien after a good passing movement; Seán Griffin then broke through and fired into the bottom corner of the net to put us ahead which was followed immediately by a point  from Sam McCarthy to leave the score at 1-12 to 2-07 in our favour.

Fossa fought back and when we kicked two wides they replied with 3 quick fire points plus a goal to leave them deserving winners, 3-13 to 1-14.

This was an entertaining game played in a good spirit throughout.

Team: Rob O’Connor, Aidan Mangan, Sam Pituch, Jordan Foley, Seán Collins, Deaglán Crowe, Ben O’Brien, Fenton Collins, Seán Griffin, DJ Hanafin, Sam McCarthy, Gearóid Savage, Gearóid Meehan.

Subs used: Gavin Burrows, Joby Fitzgerald, Cody O’Shea.

U21:

St Brendans have been drawn at home to Dr Crokes in the first round of the U21 county championship. We will have a number  of players on duty and wish them all the best of luck.

The match takes place on Weds night next 17th May in Blennerville with a throw in time of 7 pm – tickets must be purchased in advance on the following link https://www.universe.com/users/kerry-gaa-VLF1SR

Kerry:

Kerry will play their first game on Sat next at 3 pm when Mayo are the visitors to Killarney – Mayo have been on an upward curve since Kevin McStay has come on board and were most impressive during the national league, beating Galway in the final.

Their first round loss in the Connacht championship to Roscommon was a surprise but this promises to be a fascinating encounter given the recent history between the two sides. Tickets are available on ticketmaster.ie at a cost of €25 for terrace with all stand tickets sold out.

Kerry Minors:

Kerry were defeated in the first round of the Munster championship on Thursday night last by Cork on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-14 points.

Tomás Kennedy was our sole representative on the side at centre forward and gave a fine display despite the loss.Eddie Lacey is a member of Wayne Quillinan’s backroom team.

As this was a preliminary game, Kerry will now take on Limerick next Thursday night 18th May in Newcastlewest @ 6.45 with the winners progressing to the Munster final which is scheduled to take place on June 2nd.

Tailteann Cup:

Congratulations to Mark Fitzgerald and his Limerick side who proved too strong for Longford in the opening round of the Tailteann Cup – Limerick ran out winners on a 2-16 to 1-16 scoreline but were full value for their win with Longford’s goal coming in injury time.

Limerick now proceed to their away game next weekend when they travel to Carlow on Sat next to play the locals – Carlow themselves were victorious on Sunday when beating Wicklow away from home by the minimum margin.

Juveniles:

It was a busy morning for our academy on Sunday. Our U7 boys hosted Ardfert while our U8 and U10 girls travelled to Kilcummin GAA to play their first Go Games this year.

All other age groups trained as normal in Ballyrickard. We are fortunate to have so many dedicated people in our club who make all this possible for our Juveniles. And a huge thank you has to go to the parents who bring them to training and games. As they say, team work makes the dream work.

*U5 Boys: *

These boys turn up each morning to training with big smiles on their faces and even bigger smiles as soon as they have a ball in hand. They are developing their skills weekly through different drills and games. This week they joined forces with the U6 girls. Keep up the practice at home boys.

*U6 Girls: *

Great day of training on Sunday was had by all when we joined with the U5 boys in training. We all worked on our skills practising our throwing hand passing and ball control. We welcomed a new member to the team, Michelle. We hope you enjoy every minute with us. We look forward to next week’s session.

*U7 Boys: *

Our U7 Boys welcomed Ardfert GAA to Healy Park Ballyrickard Sunday morning. With both clubs having nearly thirty players each on show. Teams were divided evenly and some great skills were on show with the 4 rounds of games played. The group are improving with every session and this showed today with all 4 teams performing exceptionally. Thank you to Ardfert and we look forward to playing Ye again soon. Well done all.

*U8 Girls: *

The U8 girls had a great day out in Kilcummin Sunday morning. For some of the girls it was their first ever match and they did themselves proud. There was some lovely interplay between the midfielders which lead to the setting up of a plethora of scores.

Some fine finishing by the forwards lead to lots of points and goals. Our girls looked very comfortable on the ball. They competed very well in the 50/50 balls. A special mention has to be given to Mia for her strong kick outs. Overall it was a great performance by a fine bunch of players. Well done girls.

*U9 Boys: *

It was a busy week for our U9 boys. Tuesday evening, they made the short journey across town to play our neighbours Na Gaeil. Both teams showed some fine skills and passages of play.

Kudos to Na Gaeil for hosting and making it an enjoyable evening for all. At the academy Sunday morning all the boys welcomed newcomers Conor and Nico to the team. Next Thursday 18th May we play host to Ardfert @ 6:15pm in Ballyrickard. See you all Thursday – Keep up the practice.

*U10 Girls: *

The U10 Girls played outstanding football on Sunday morning in their first Go Games this year in kilcummin GAA from start to finish. Excellent skills on show and fantastic team work from all on the pitch leading to some lovely scores and defending. They should be very proud of themselves as their coaches were super proud of each and every one of them. Keep up the good work girls, it’s really paying off.

*U11 Boys: *

Another great training session was had by all. Developing their skills even more through fun drills and a quick game at the end against each other. These boys are showing huge improvement every week. Keep up the practice at home boys. See you all next week.

*U13 Boys: *

U13 Boys travelled by bus down to Sneem to play Sneem/Derrynane/Templenoe/Tousist for Phase 2 in the County League, where we lost on a heavy score line to a team with four clubs making the opponents too much of a challenge on the day. We are very proud of our boys and the effort they put in never giving up. We will train again Wednesday and Friday evening at 6.30pm in Ballyrickard to prepare for another away trip to Rathmore next weekend.

*U15 Boys: *

Our Division 5 County League journey came to an end on Wednesday evening. The boys put up a great fight in Tarbert and were very unlucky, Tarbert go through after extra time

Best of luck to them in the final.

We are very proud of the team’s progress so far and are eager for the team to improve further in the next competition. We anticipate that this will start in approximately 4 weeks time. Training continues Monday at 6pm in Strand Road. We will organise a couple of challenge games in the meantime.

Our Division 9 team has qualified for the shield final. We will be playing the winners of Fossa and Na Gaeil which will be played on Wednesday evening. Further details to follow in Clubzap.

U12 GIRLS

Ohhh that winning feeling…

Pride of place this week goes to our warriors for their amazing performance in the division 3 North Kerry shield final which is kindly sponsored by Billy Kissane.

From the throw in last Tuesday our girls went at it playing fast, free flowing football and had a comfortable lead throughout the game. Great team performance dominating every position!  Well done to all and especially our newer girls who came on leaps and bounds.

Sophie Constable, our captain marshalled a lot of the play like a pro and led her team to victory and was ably assisted by every player on the team.

Many thanks to parents and supporters for coming to watch and encourage the team. Thanks to North Kerry for organising, Billy Kissane the sponsor and to Rory Kilgallen for presenting the shield.

Well done to the players and management. Super proud we are of our U12s !

We were delighted to see such a great turnout at training again last Saturday on a glorious afternoon. Lots of practice at home and coming to training regularly for all will bring this team on massively. There is huge potential in these girls.

Training continues twice weekly and we’ll let you know once the county league fixtures have been confirmed.

There will be a team bonding session coming up over the next few weeks..more details to follow nearer the day!

CUMANN NA mBUNSCOL

The success continues…this time it’s the 5th and 6th class students from Scoil Eoin who are now through to the Cumann Na mBunscol final.

Congrats to Scoil Eoin on their win and it’s great to see  our club players involved with the team… Allie, Ellie Marie, Emma, Jessie, Kelly, Lexi, Meabh and Rachael.

Comhghairdeas !

U14 GIRLS

Previously in last year’s league campaign, Na Gaeil had kept our ladies at arm’s length in a home fixture for them. We had a turnaround last Thursday evening away again to Na Gaeil as we finished our division 4 campaign with a comfortable victory.

With a number of players unavailable those who took to the field were tuned in from the first ball, building up a lead from throw in.

Our girls were on top in most sectors throughout the game . We had an incredibly tenacious defence and most of our forwards got on the scoresheet. We completely dominated the match and management brought on the full complement of subs.

A warm welcome to Sorcha!

After last Thursday’s match in the NCP league we have played all of our rounds . Where will we play our league final and who will it be against..

Hoping that we will be capping off a tremendous NCP league on Sunday, May 21st.

U16 GIRLS

A little break in the county league for this age group as many are preparing for their junior cert exams.

The other matches in this competition are set to recommence on June 28th (tbc). Just in case you’re wondering who we are playing in the other matches , wonder no more..

For our next game we are away to Laune Rangers and on July 19th (tbc) when we host Kilcummin.

MINOR LADIES

These ladies have two back games to play and are looking forward to taking to the field again shortly.

Training continues twice a week.

SENIOR LADIES

It is still early days of the Donal Curtin Cup campaign and after putting in a sturdy performance in the last two rounds , Strand Road will be looking to put their best foot forward against Fossa on Monday evening.

As always we’re looking forward to our supporters stepping to the fore and cheering on our young ladies. There has never been much between these two teams over the years so we’re anticipating this being a great match.

Throw in time is set for 7.15p.m. in Fossa on Monday, May 15th.

Ádh mór a chailíní!

CONGRATS

Well done to Mike Quirke who officially handed over the proceeds from his last podcast series to Recovery Haven.

DONAL WALSH

Ten years ago we said goodbye to a legend, Donal Walsh. Donal, only a teenager himself left a legacy which still lives on throughout the country.

Many of our TY students in town travelled to Knock last Thursday to mark the passing of Donal on his tenth anniversary. We had wonderful feedback from our ladies in our club who attended  saying that it was an amazing, inspiring, emotional and heart warming experience.

Many thanks to Elma, Fionnbar, Jema and Aidan O’ Mahony for speaking on the day.

Remember , “Take time, a door will open.”

CONDOLENCES

We in Strand Road express our deep sadness on the passing of Helen Foley, ( née Kissane) , Blennerville and Strand Road.

Helen’s family, including her late Dad John, club secretary for many years and trainer of the great Strand Road team of the 50s, along with her brothers Seán, former club chairman, and Billy have had a lifetime of association with our club.

Sincere condolences to the Foley and Kissane families and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hAnam.

Our condolences also to the families and friends of Werner Heinrich, Tommy O’ Toole and Dolly Lawlor. May their souls rest in peace.

U5

Another great turn out for our under 5 boys and girls today… not to mention the mums and dads!  We worked a lot on ball handling skills, particularly staying on feet when picking up the ball. Kicking is coming on and evasive skills are excellent! Keep up all the variety of movements at home to help develop good fundamental movements for life! Well done boys and girls. Very well done to our players of the week for a big increase in confidence & joining in with big smiles, well done Katie and Brandon.

U7

A great session on Sunday for the U7’s in the lovely weather in Blennerville. We had great help from Mary and Philip. Oisin put in a massive effort to be awarded player of the week.

U8 Girls

Lots of fun and plenty healthy competition had at U8 training this morning with a great group.  The girls are applying their skills and understanding teamwork very well and seemed to really enjoy the 1-on-1 possession battles. Well done to our recent Gaelic4girls graduate Amy on putting in a huge effort and getting POTW. Keep encouraging them to practice during the week and see you all next Sunday.

U9

A great week for our u9’s, they travelled to Annascaul last Tuesday evening and had 3 great games with our hosts. This team is improving every week which is great to see. We had a fun morning at training this morning and well done to Cian, this week’s player of the week.

U10 Girls

A great session on Sunday for the U10 Girls, Niamh did some great drills on tackling and the girls were very attentive and enthusiastic.  We had a very challenging obstacle course and a tug of war which the coaches found very arduous. We couldn’t pick out one individual player, so we awarded all the girl’s player of the week!!!! See ye all next week and remember wear your gumshields.

U11

St. Pats under 11’s had no game this week so we trained last Thursday & Sunday. We had a great turnout for both sessions. The coaches were delighted with the brilliant effort given by all our players. It was great to see Jace back playing again after his recent injury.

Fionn, Noah, Thomas & newcomer Sean were really giving it their all. It’s important that all our players turn up to training and keep practicing their skills at home during the week. We’ll be in contact if there’s a game this Thursday the 18th if there isn’t we’ll train instead from 6pm to 7pm and again next Sunday 21st from 12pm- 1pm. Naomh Pádraig Abú!!

U12 Girls

Well done to our u12 girls who had another great win on Thursday evening against Abbeydorney. Every player put in a great effort, and it was great to see such an improvement with our new players. Training continues Monday evenings from 5.30 to 6.30 and Friday evenings from 5 to 6. Our next game is on Tuesday evening away to Listowel at 6.30pm.

U13

After a few weekends off, phase two of the Lee Strand Sponsored U13 County Football League commenced last Sunday which involved a trip to Gneeveguilla for our lads.

After a dreadful start conceding a number of goals in as many minutes, the boys settled into the game and got some good scores; the highlight being a goal by Charlie Sharp with his “weaker” left foot.

The practice at home is paying off Charlie! We battled hard in the second half, but we turned over possession too easily on too many occasions resulting in Gneeveguilla picking off scores on the counterattack.

The hosts ran out comfortable winners in the end, but our lads kept battling to the final whistle. Well done to all 15 players who togged out.

Special mention to Thomas Colivet who played very well when he came on at half time after travelling down from Kildare especially for the game and to James Daly who never gave up the fight.

Team: Rylan Flynn, Paddy Flynn, Jake Kelly, Aidan Berry, James Daly, Jace Flynn, Hugh Costello, Tommy Costello (C), Callum Rice, Luke O’Sullivan, Eddie Hayes, Dee Hanly, Charlie Sharp, Isaac Price and Thomas Colivet.

Off the football pitch, we want to send a huge congrats to the Costello and Flynn twins who won medals at the Kerry County Athletics Championships which took place before the game on Sunday. A huge commitment by all four boys. Well done lads!

We will train this Tuesday and Thursday night at the pitch and on Sunday from 12-1:15pm. Our next game in the county league is at home to Kerins O’Rahillys on Sunday May 28th.

With a point each from Patrick Dowling and David O Callaghan, Beale got three points unanswered. St Pats did their best to close the gap with two points from David O Callaghan, a quick shot goal from Eoin Greaney and point from Gary Savage.

Beale put another point on the board to stay ahead. David O Callaghan got two points to bring the gap to a point unfortunately it was not enough to come away with a win. The final whistle blew St Pats 1-14 Beale 2-12

Senior Team

The Credit Union SFL: Division 1 Round 6
Ballymacelligott: 3-15(24) Daingean Uí Chúis: 0-14(14)

Prior to the SFL Division Round 6 game played in Ballymacelligott a Minute’s silence was observed for Ellen Clifford nee O’Shea who hailed from Ballymacelligott. Ellen was a great Ballymac supporter and was always a loyal supporter of her home club.

She was a proud Mom bringing her sons and the Tom Markem Cup as well as Sam to her home club over the years.

In a message read out by Club PRO Joanne Long, on behalf of Dermot Clifford and his family, he thanked the Club for their support for Ellen during her illness and the support shown to her family by the club in the past week. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.

As the Dingle PRO says “It was a fine day for football” in Ballymacelligott today. Our pitch was in excellent condition. Seventeen minutes into the first half Ballymac scored two goals on the trot and our goalie saved a goal opportunity on the other end. These four minutes were critical as they gave Ballymac confidence and momentum.

Dingle opened the scoring with a point from a free from Thomas Sheehy. Two points from Josh O’Keefe and Niall Collins for Ballymac followed by two from Conor Geaney and Conor Flannery for the Westerners.

Dingle were moving well and had a shot at goal which was caught by Chrisy Leen in Ballymac’s goal and cleared very fast -Ballymac worked the ball well and Dara Keane scored a point. Two points from Conor Geaney and Thomas Sheehy and Dingle were in the lead by two points with 15 minutes on the clock.

Tadhg Brick, who had the game of his life for Ballymac, popped up and caught a ball in the half-forward line and after a great run rattled the net. Brian Lonergan for Ballymac caught the ensuing kick out, and moved the ball quickly to Donal Daly who scored a second goal for the home side.

Christy Leen in the Ballymac Goal made a vital save that kept Ballymac in the lead by four points with twelve minutes left in the half.

Dingle added to two points from Conor Geaney one from a free, to their tally before halftime. Ballymac saw another goal from Donal Daly and points from Aidan Breen, and Dara Keane (2) giving them a good lead at halftime.

Dingle turned over a lot of ball in the first half and failed to take advantage of their hard work. The game was closer than the scoreboard showed.

Half time score:  Ballymacelligott: 3-6(15) Daingean Uí Chúis: 0-7(7)

Niall Collins opened the second half with three points on the trot.  Conor Geaney added a point for Dingle and it was matched by Ballymac’s Diarmuid Galvin.  Dingle Goalie scored a fine point from a 45 before Ballymac captain Vinnie Horan scored a point from play. This left the score Ballymac 3-11 to Dingle 0-10 with fifteen minutes left on the clock.

The last fifteen minutes saw both teams as determined as ever.  Aidan Breen scored a point from a 45 for the home side, and Gavin Curran scored another for Dingle. Cathal Dunne and Donal Daly scored a point each for Ballymac with five minutes to go and it looked like game over.

Dingle were still determined to get something from the game. To the player’s great credit, they battled on and scored three points before Michael Herlihy for Ballymac scored the last point of the game from a free.

Ballymac were delighted to see Tadhg Brick and Brian Lonergan lining out with both having the energy and enthusiasm that complimented the team so well.   Niall Collins and Donal Daly were terrific in the forwards as were Dan Shea and Diarmuid Galvin in the backs.

It was heartening to see Dara Keane and Cian Counihan returning from injuries and making a fine contribution to this fine team effort.

Congratulations to Dan Shea and Anthony O’Leary who are two proud fathers of a new son each this week.

Ballymacelligott: 3-15(24) Daingean Uí Chúis: 0-14(14)

Laune Rangers 3-13

Ballymacelligott GAA 1-5

Our Minor team played their third game in the GAA Minor Central Region against Laune Rangers on Wednesday Eve, May 10th.

In the first half, it was the hosts who took superiority on proceedings with a string of scores including two goals. Ballymac came back with some scores of our own but were behind at Half Time 3-5 to 0-3.

Despite an uphill struggle, our boys fought resolutely. A goal from the ever-resourceful Jack Joy brought some respectability to the scoreline but it was not to be for our lads on the night.

Jack Joy (1-00), Micheal Savage (0-02) Shane Gilroy (0-01), Mairtin McKivergan (0-01) Jamie Burke (0-01)

Minor Ladies

Minor Girls lost out to Cromane last evening, despite a very strong first half when playing against the strong wind only trailed by a point 1-7 to 2-3 with goals from Keelin Enright and Aoibhin Broderick. However, our 2nd half display was well below par, littered with mistakes and conceding 4 2nd half goals ensured Cromane came out well on top 5-12 to 2-5.

Next Fixture is on Thursday 18th v Scartaglin in Ballymac.

The second half was much of the same nip and tuck football hard tackles great movement and super team play and we ended up 10 points to 1goal 7points

U13 Boys

Ballymac u13 Blue Team, kicked of Phase 2 of Co League this evening at home to Glenflesk. We started well playing into the wind and an early goal from Harvey gave the team momentum in the first half. Glenflesk were kept to very few chances thanks to great work rate by everyone when we didn’t have the ball.

They got a deflected goal from a 45 to keep them in the game.  It was great to see Adrian back from injury and he chipped in with a well taken goal and a few points to ensure with got to half time ahead on the scoreboard.

Our defence were tested throughout the second half as Glenflesk pushed for a goal but some excellent defending from our midfielders Harvey and Eric as well as both Gearoids, Finn and Ciaran kept them at bay.

When Tadhg O’Connor rattled the net, we increased our lead and held on to win 3-10 to 2-9. Great displays all round. We play Beaufort at home next Sunday at 6pm. Scorers on the night: Darragh Lyons 1pt, Patrick Leen 1pt, Harvey Leen 1 goal, Tadhg O’Connor 1-1, Adrian O’Connor 1-7.

REPORT: Kerry Advance To Munster Final After Victory Over Tipperary

.

Stephen Gleeson reports on the TG4 Munster SFC clash between Kerry and Tipperary in Bansha on Sunday…

Kerry 2-8

Tipperary 1-5

Kerry are through to the 2023 TG4 Munster Senior Championship final after producing a fantastic performance to comprehensively beat Tipperary at Galtee Rovers GAA club in Bansha this afternoon.

The Kingdom, Lidl National League Division 1 champions, will face holders Cork in the provincial decider in Mallow on May 28.

Visitors Kerry made little of the trek to west Tipp and were fired up from the off. A blistering opening ten minutes saw Kerry shoot 2-3 as they called the game in all sectors.

Just a minute in, Anna Galvin struck the first Kerry point, which was followed with a fine strike low to the corner of the net on four minutes by full forward Danielle O’Leary. The attacking was relentless and Hannah O’Donoghue sensed an opening to strike a point just after.

Continued below…

.

Tipp were rattled and jittery on the ball and during their next attack, Kerry went for the jugular again. The ball was sent into the full-forward line and centre back Emma Costello attempted to flick past Lauren Fitzpatrick in the Tipp goal but the keeper directed the effort onto the crossbar.

As the ball dropped, Costello found herself in the right place at the right time to push the ball with her hands into the empty net to leave it 2-2 to no score on eight minutes.

From the kickout Niamh Ní Chonchúir added another point for Kerry, leaving Tipp with a mountain to climb after just ten minutes of football. Tipp finally got off the mark through an Emma Morrissey free on 14 minutes to leave it 2-3 to 0-1.

Kerry kept the pressure on, though. Danielle O’Leary and Niamh Carmody kicked good scores from play and the incisive, accurate foot passes of the Kerry side meant they dictated proceedings.

Emma Morrissey pointed a close in free for Tipp before a fantastic long-range kick from outside the 45 by Niamh Carmody for Kerry on 26 minutes made it 2-6 to 0-2 – and that was how it remained until the break.

Continued below…

.

Tipp regrouped at the break and right on the resumption, Emma Morrissey struck a lovely point to raise local cheers but Kerry weren’t going home without a win. Niamh Ní Chonchúir and Lorraine Scanlon responded within a couple of minutes with well-struck points.

Tipp, to their credit, kept attacking but the Kerry defence kept a tight watch on Aishling Moloney and it took Tipp until the 23rd minute of the second half to get their next score. It was a great, long-distance kick by Neasa Towey.
