A rainy day in Dublin provided the setting for Kerry’s defeat at the hands of our great rivals and there was disappointment on the faces of the many, many thousands of Kerry fans who made the trip to the capital.
It was very different some hours earlier when the city centre was awash with green and gold, with some supporters still hopeful of securing any spare tickets outside The Gresham Hotel.

The atmosphere was incredible as the teams paraded around Croke Park and there was also a sizeable Kerry contingent making their voices heard on Hill 16.
Alas, our lads didn’t perform to their best and Dublin capitalised on their chances to win back Sam. The only consolation for fans walking back to the city centre after the game was that we have a young team that will be back next year.
We took shelter from the rain to take photos at The Gresham Hotel before the match. Scroll down for photos…
IT’S rare that Kerry fans outnumber opposition supporters by about three to one in a neutral venue, but that was the case on Saturday as thousands made the trip to Thurles to support the ladies side against Mayo.
While some were stopping off on the way to Dublin for the weekend to support the men, the majority made the long trip there and back to the Kingdom to show that the amazing atmosphere the Kerry side experienced at Austin Stack Park two weeks ago against Meath wasn’t a once off.
They easily emulated that support with a display of colour and noise which surely must have inspired the team to victory.
This team deserves every bit as much support as the men, so hopefully many thousands more will travel to Croke Park in two weeks time to cheer them on against the Dubs. Scroll down for photos…
Oisín McGovern reports on Kerry’s win over Mayo in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Semi-Final at Semple Stadium in Thurles on Saturday…
Kerry 1-16
Mayo 1-11
Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh produced a stunning display and shot 1-10 asKerry took another major step towards ending their famine as they booked their place in the TG4 All-Ireland final for the second year in a row.
Kerry, even without injured captain Siofra O’Shea, were on top throughout and will now hope to go one better in two weeks and capture the TG4 All-Ireland title for the first time since 1993.
The Corca Dhuibhne sharpshooter delivered an awesome display in a game where Kerry built up a nine-point half-time lead to leave Mayo with little chance of a revival.

The Connacht champions enjoyed a better second half with the wind and shot 1-6. However, Michael Moyles’side had no answer to the unstoppable Ní Mhuircheartaigh, who caused havoc at every turn.
The exchanges were quite even in the first ten minutes, with Sinéad Cafferky and Shauna Howley exchanging points with Ní Mhuircheartaigh and Hannah O’Donoghue.
But Mayo were blown away in a devastating nine-minute spell in the first half when Kerry hit them for 1-7 without reply.
The twin threats of O’Donoghue and Ní Mhuircheartaigh accounted for 1-5 of this, with Emma Costello and Niamh Ní Chonchúir pointing the remainder.
Kerry’s two most influential players were central to Kerry’s 18th minute goal, with O’Donoghue fist-passing across the goal for Ní Mhuircheartaigh to palm into the net.
Continued below…
Mayo – who sent three kick-outs out over the sideline in the first half – broke an 11-minute long scoring drought when Sinéad Cafferky knocked over her second point.
Centre-back Ciara Needham addedanother for the Connacht champions, but a nine-point interval deficit left them with a mountain to climb.
The Kingdom lost the impressive O’Donoghue to injury at half-time, but that did little to impede their march to victory.
Ní Mhuircheartaigh was immense, kicking 0-5 in the second half and nearly grabbing a second goal.
Substitute Deirdre Doherty gave Mayo a glimmer of home when shestruck the net mid-way through the second half within a minute of her introduction.
However, they failed to muster a serious bounce against a Kerry team that tackled and turned over ball tigerishly all afternoon.
Shauna Howley and Aoife Geraghty pointed as Mayo made a few brave charges at goal, but their shooting and shot selection let them down.
A rampant Ní Mhuircheartaigh, who ended with 1-6 from play, continued to terrorise the Mayo defence and saw a wicked shot on goal graze over the crossbar in the closing stages.

David Moriarty reports on late agony for Kerry FC last night against Finn Harps at Mounthawk Park…
Kerry FC 1-2 Finn Harps
The last two meetings between these two teams were close and nothing separated them as they both ended in draws.
Kerry FC would be hoping to get bragging rights over at least one team this season and Finn Harps could just be the ones they attain that against.
Last time out between the two sides they played in Donegal, and nothing separated them as it ended 0-0. Both sides progressed last weekend to the last sixteen of the FAI Cup after wins against Ringmahon Rangers (Kerry FC) and Kilbarrack United (Finn Harps). So, wins for both teams put both camps in high spirits before Friday’s match.
Continued below…
Kerry also added another signing to the squad as goalkeeper Arthur Nganou joined the club after a successful trial game during Wednesday’s charity event.
In the opening exchanges, the game was quite cagey and little separated the sides. Both teams battled it out in midfield as they found it hard to get many attacks going.
Any time they did transition from defence to attack the passes were too heavy and the ball just broke itself away from the forward running players.
Twenty minutes went past, and it was still close, both sides managed to create a couple of chances, but nothing clear-cut enough to say they were on top. Both sides played a very tight system which stopped creative passes going into the pockets of space.
Wingers such as Leo Gaxha and Sean McGrath found it extremely hard to create anything out wide because of the defensive system put in place. Likewise with Finn Harps due to the great defensive shape from the Kerry FC back line.
The best chance of the half at that stage went to Finn Harps who had a free kick on the edge of the box from Harps captain Tony McNamee. He struck low and with precision aiming into the bottom right-hand corner but was saved well for a corner by Lee Axworthy.
Harps started to control the play and stopped Kerry from creating many chances. Harps were earning themselves a bucket load of set pieces with very little working for them.
Overall, a very underwhelming first half from both sides. From the two previous meetings between the teams, it was easy to see why they found it hard to break each other down.
The second half started at a much faster pace and Kerry FC created their first huge chance of the game. Striker Ryan Kelliher received the ball out by the left byline.
He held the ball up well and found a pass inside the six-yard box to Sean McGrath who took the quick snapshot. Unfortunately, it was aimed straight at League debutant keeper Rory Kelly, and he would keep the kingdom at bay on this occasion.
Even with that quick start to the half from Kerry, Ryan Flood would put the visitors in front inside fifty-two minutes.
A shot just inside the box broke to the Harps number seven and he thumped it through the crowded Kerry defence and past Axworthy in the Kingdom goal. A goal that summed up the game as it took a shot from distance to separate the two sides who defensively set up fantastically.
Harps came close again just nine minutes later. A free kick from the left side of the pitch delivered by Ryan Flood reached Semi Wara but his header attempt sailed over the crossbar. Kerry started to feel the pressure and felt that substitutes in the line of Ronan Teahan, Cian Brosnan, and Matt Keane would help tired legs out on the pitch.
Ethan Kos prevented the lead doubling for Harps as he brilliantly made a last stitched block from a shot by Jamie Watson that was goal bound. Kerry needed to step things up with twenty minutes to go if they wanted to achieve anything from the game.
Ten minutes to go and possession turned all the way in the favour of Kerry, but much like the first half, they were lacking the final pass to put pressure on Finn Harps. Harps decided to resort to late challenges to slow Kerry going forward and worked with very little being done to stop them.
Despite their best efforts, Kerry would get what they deserved in the eighty-sixth minute and draw level through on-form centre half Sam Aladesanusi.
A cross from a corner swung in by Cian Brosnan flew over the head of Kelly with Sam there to finish the chance off. With four minutes to go and stoppages, it was game on.
With all the potential to be a late winner or to earn a point at least, it would be heartbreak again for Kerry FC. A free kick inside their own half from Ryan Flood was directed to Daithi McCallion, the centre half would head the ball towards substitute Billy Banda who subsequently headed home to win it at the death for Harps.
Not at all what Kerry deserved from how they played in the second half especially to draw level but like on so many occasions this season, it just was not meant to be for Billy Dennehy’s men.
As the sides clashed after the full time whistle, Kerry goalkeeper Lee Axworthy received two yellow cards and was sent off.
Kerry have to put that devastating loss behind them and turn their focus to next Friday as they travel a short distance to take on Waterford FC before a bank holiday Monday clash v Cobh Ramblers back at home.

Partial Capacity Benefit is a social welfare scheme which allows you to return to work or self-employment if you have reduced capacity to work as a consequence of your illness or disability and to continue to receive a payment from the Department of Social Protection (DSP).
How do I qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit?
If you are currently getting Illness Benefit (for a minimum of 6 months) or Invalidity Pension and wish to return to work, you may qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit if your capacity for work is reduced by your medical condition. You will qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit if your restriction on capacity for work is assessed as moderate, severe, or profound. If it is assessed as mild you will not qualify.
There is no requirement that the work a person does while on Partial Capacity Benefit has to be for rehabilitative or therapeutic purposes.
Continued below…
I am in receipt of Invalidity Pension & thinking of doing voluntary work. Must I apply for Partial Capacity Benefit?
No, you do not have to transfer onto the Partial Capacity Scheme if you wish to do voluntary work.
How long can I get Partial Capacity Benefit?
If you are coming from Invalidity Pension, your Partial Capacity Benefit will continue for a maximum of 3 years (156 weeks). However, you can apply for PCB again.
You will be reassessed to find out if you qualify. If you are coming from Illness Benefit, your Partial Capacity Benefit payment will continue to the end of your entitlement to Illness Benefit.
If I transfer to Partial Capacity Benefit and start work but become ill again what are my options?
When you are getting Partial Capacity Benefit and you are unable to work for a period of time due to illness, you should contact the Partial Capacity Section and let them know about your situation
For short periods of illness (up to 8 weeks at a time), you can stay on Partial Capacity Benefit, but your weekly rate can be increased to the full Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension personal rate.
For longer periods of illness (greater than 8 weeks), DSP will reassess your Partial Capacity Benefit claim and you may return to your Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension. If you become able for work again you can contact DSP about going back onto Partial Capacity Benefit.
Continued below…
What is the rate of Partial Capacity Benefit?
Partial Capacity Benefit is made up of a personal rate for you and may include increases for your qualified adult and qualified children.
The personal rate of payment is based on the assessment of your restriction on capacity for work, whether you were in receipt of Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension and your current rate of payment.
Do I keep my entitlement to secondary benefits if I transfer to Partial Capacity Benefit?
If you were getting Invalidity Pension and were entitled to Free Travel or Island Allowance, you can keep these if you qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit. You cannot keep your Fuel Allowance.
You can also keep the Household Benefits Package but it will be means-tested after the first 2 years and annually after that. The means test has a weekly income limit.
This limit is the maximum rate of State Pension (Contributory) for your circumstances (this includes any dependents you may have) plus €120. Your weekly income limit is then compared to your weekly means in a means test.
If you were getting Invalidity Pension and a Living Alone Allowance (LAA) with your Invalidity Pension (or you start to live alone while you are getting PCB), your rate of PCB will be calculated on the basis of your Invalidity Pension and your LAA.
So, for example, if your restriction on capacity for work is severe, your PCB payment will be 75% of your IP and LAA payment.
You should check with the Department of Social Protection to see how your Rent Supplement may be affected by your participation in the Partial Capacity Scheme.
How do I apply for Partial Capacity Benefit?
You complete a Partial Capacity Benefit form, which you can get from the Department of Social Protection or from your local Citizens Information Centre. A Medical Assessor will assess the restriction on your capacity for work.
This may require you to attend a medical assessment. You should include all appropriate medical evidence with your application. If you qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit, you are not required to send in medical certificates.
When should I apply?
You must apply for Partial Capacity Benefit (PCB) within 21 days of starting work. You can apply for Partial Capacity Benefit before you get a job. You must start work within 13 weeks of making your application.
Partial Capacity Benefit is not paid to people over 66. You should apply for a State Pension at least 3 months before your 66th birthday.
What are my options, if I apply for PCB and my application is unsuccessful?
You can appeal a decision on your claim for Partial Capacity Benefit to the independent Social Welfare Appeals Office. You should appeal within 21 days of getting the decision. If you need advice or assistance with your appeal, you should contact your local Citizens Information Centre for advocacy support.
• If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information Service in Kerry.

Being John Malkovich(Saturday 9.45pm TG4) is a film that almost defies description, but here goes anyway.
John Cusack stars as Craig, a puppeteer who is forced to get an office job to support his pet-obsessed wife. He then discovers a magical portal that gives him access to the mind of John Malkovich for fifteen minutes at a time.
This also stars Cameron Diaz and, oh yes, John Malkovich.

It stars Denzel Washington in the title role with Angela Bassett and directed by Spike Lee.
This weekend’s Coen Brothers gem is Fargo(Saturday 11.20 RTE1) where a pregnant cop, Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand, winning her first Oscar), stumbles across a strange kidnapping plot while investigating a series of roadside murders.
These are linked to Jerry (William H Macy), a car salesman attempting to stage a kidnap of his wife to get a ransom (again!) out of her wealthy father. Enjoy!

TWO Tralee women will be at Ardfert village this weekend collecting to help raise funds to buy a beach buggy for the lifeguards at Banna Beach.
Fidelma Fitzgerald of ‘The Wavers’— a group of women who swim regularly in Banna — said a beach buggy is vital so the lifeguards can get quickly to any medical situation that may arise on the long beach.
Fidelma said she could have benefitted from the use of a buggy recently when she was stung by a weever fish on the beach while the tide was out.
Continued below…
She was in great pain and it took a long time for her to be physically carried to where she could receive the necessary medical attention.
“If they had a buggy they could have got there within a couple of minutes and I would not have been in pain for as long as I was,” said Fidelma, who, along with the other ‘Wavers’ — June, Anne, Sheila and Sinead — have been swimming all year round in the sea for the past four years.
Fidelma also said one of her friends had a stroke recently, but thankfully she was at the beach car park when it happened and was immediately transported to hospital and is now recovering well.
“If she had the stroke while swimming when the tide was out, then it would have been very difficult to get her from the beach to a vehicle to get the medical attention on time,” said Fidelma.
Fidelma received a permit to collect at Ardfert cross and hopes to eventually raise enough for a beach buggy and the medical kit (including a defibrillator) which could fit on the buggy.
They will be collecting from passing motorists between 10am and 8pm on Saturday and 10am and 8pm on Sunday. Fidelma thanked people in advance for any contributions they can give.

THE Kerry winner, who scooped the €1 million top prize in Wednesday’s Lotto Plus 1 draw, purchased their ticket in Murphy’s Supervalu on Railway Road in Kenmare.
Store owner Derry Murphy was delighted to hear the good news: “It really could be anyone who’s won, since we have a real mix of locals and tourists who shop with us every day.”
“We’re a busy store in the centre of town so there will be a real buzz around the place as soon as the news gets out. To think that one of our customers is now a millionaire is very exciting and great news. The staff here will be delighted to hear that we sold a ticket worth €1 million. The biggest prize that we sold before this was €500,000 in the EuroMillions Plus draw so we were definitely due another big win!”

Nganou will wear the number 16 shirt for Kerry FC for the remainder of the season.

“My main goal is to contribute positively and support the team in any way I can. As someone coming in late, I understand the challenges of integrating into an established group, but I am eager to work hard and prove myself as a valuable asset to the team.”
First team manager Billy Dennehy said “I was first made aware of Arthur through my brother Darren so he came in training with us a couple of weeks ago. I knew very quickly that he was a player that had a lot of pedigree in relation to being at a different level and having a lot of pedigree for a young player.”
“He just didn’t have the opportunities or possibly wasn’t in the right club to push forward. But now he has come here and having played the majority of the game on Wednesday, his composure and ability was truly on show.
“So we are delighted to have him on board, I think he showed a great desire within himself as a player to get his career back on track by wanting to come down here. Now that he is in he has the opportunity to maximise the platform and hopefully go on to improve week by week. I’m sure everyone here will welcome Arthur to Kerry Football Club”.
THERE’S just days to go until Kerry do battle to retain their All-Ireland SFC title against their great rivals at headquarters.
Tickets for the big game have never been as scarce, but tens of thousands of the green and gold army will still be in Croke Park to watch the encounter with the Dubs which throws in at 3.30pm.

THIS Saturday, a local barber is donating all his takings from the day, as well as raffling a signed Kerry GAA jersey, in aid of a great cause.
Tony McMahon of T. McMahon’s Gentlemen’s Barbershop on Russell Street is raising the funds for the Make A Wish Foundation.
He managed to get a Kerry jersey signed by the players which will be raffled this Saturday afternoon, just in time for the winner to wear it in Croke Park on Sunday!

It costs €10 for a ticket for the raffle and there’s a host of vouchers from local businesses also to be won. For anyone who doesn’t win, their raffle ticket will be valid for a further draw the following week for a signed Kerry FC jersey. There’ll also be food and refreshments supplied to customers on Saturday.
If you want to help, call in and buy a ticket for the raffle between now and Saturday afternoon, or book in a haircut and contribute to a great cause.
Then, on Tuesday, August 8, Tony will receive some special visitors in the form of participants in ‘BarbersRide 2023’. BarbersRide was started in 2017 by a bunch of biking barbers in the UK that wanted to combine their love of biking and barbering with a fundraising charity event.
They will visit six barbers in Ireland in August, with Tony’s being one stop-off point. The barbers, from England, Scotland, Wales and Spain, will set up around the corner near Bridge Street collecting money for the Make A Wish Foundation.

The pair will make history as the first ever joint presenters of RTÉ’s coverage of the Festival, broadcasting live from the Kerry Sports Academy at the Munster Technological University (MTU) on August 21st and 22nd on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
This year will mark Dáithí’s 12th year presenting the show, and new presenter Kathryn said she can’t wait to join him onstage and meet this year’s International Roses.
Continued below…
Kathryn said: “I’m honoured and so excited to join Daithí and the team as co-host of this year’s Rose of Tralee. The Festival has such an incredible legacy in Ireland and all around the world – no better way to celebrate such incredible women. I’ve grown up watching it each year, so it’s very special to get the opportunity to present alongside Daithí. I can’t wait to get started. Tralee here we come!”
Daithí said: “I’m over the moon to be back presenting the Rose of Tralee for another year, and to welcome my wonderful new co-host Kathryn to the Rose of Tralee family! Kathryn and I have known and worked with each other for over two decades, so no doubt that there’s plenty of craic in store. We can’t wait to meet this year’s incredible 32 Roses, and make our way to Tralee. Seo linn!”
32 Roses will represent the Irish diaspora worldwide this year from Rose Centres across Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and beyond.
The Rose of Tralee will be available to watch for free, live and on-demand by audiences in Ireland and around the world on RTÉ Player. Features, archive footage, behind-the-scenes content and more will also be available across RTÉ.ie and RTÉ social media platforms over the coming weeks.
Anthony O’Gara, Executive Chairman of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, added: “We’re delighted to welcome Kathryn to the Rose Family. We’ve had many ‘firsts’ over the years, and joint presenters for Rose Selection will bring another level of excitement to the proceedings.
Kathryn is in the very best of company with our esteemed colleague Daithí, who is a great ambassador for the Festival, and we look forward to seeing what they both have in store for this year’s show.”
The Rose of Tralee International Festival returns for its 62nd festival from August 18th – 22nd.
NATIONAL Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the new high-speed fibre broadband network under the Government’s National Broadband Plan (NBP) is making an investment of almost €13 million to ensure access for over 3,300 rural Tralee homes, farms and businesses.
The company was in town this week to meet with local B&B owner, Jerome Lordan, whose connection to the NBI network is making a big difference to his business.
“I was delighted to be able to sign up with Ivertec to connect to the NBI network. With the fast and dependable broadband we now have, our guests couldn’t be happier. They’ve been writing online reviews giving our B&B a 10/10 rating for the broadband connection alone.”
Continued below…
Peter Hendrick, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland said: “In Kerry we will connect 28,000 premises overall and 40% of those are ready to connect now, including 7,500 homes, businesses and farms in the surrounds of Ballyheigue, Tralee and along the Dingle Peninsula.
“Next to come will be the towns and townlands around Kilgarvan in the south of the county, with connections becoming available for those locations in the coming months. I encourage people to visit the NBI website, nbi.ie, where they can check their Eircode and sign up for updates.”
DR Mary Mc Caffrey, of the Scotia Clinic, has warmly welcomed Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly’s announcement that fully publicly funded assisted human reproduction (AHR) treatment will commence in September.
This long-awaited programme will entitle eligible patients to one full cycle of IVF (in-vitro fertilisation) or ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) treatment, initially provided in HSE-approved private clinics of their choice ahead of the opening next year of the first public National Advanced AHR Centre.
Dr Mc Caffrey explained; “this is a fantastic first step, we fully recognise that IVF is a significant cost for all couples, and for some sadly this cost has been a barrier for them in being able to access treatment, so we are confident this new programme will make an impactful difference.”
Continued below…
There are eligibility criteria which will set out guidelines with respect to the age of the intending parents, the female patients body mass index, the number of existing children and the number of previous IVF cycles accessed.
Patients with known clinical causes of infertility and patients where there is no known clinical cause will be eligible for treatment.
Given the complexity of fertility services this programme is being commenced on a structured and phased basis. For instance, treatment involving the use of donated gametes (sperm and eggs) will not be available in September for heterosexual or same-sex couples or single female patients. This treatment will become available as soon as possible.
Dr Mc Caffrey outlined; “Couples about to embark on this new IVF pathway have time to do everything to give themselves the best chance of success. We will work with them, to make that possible.”
“This Model of Care for Fertility will take the approach that the patient will present to their primary health care provider or specialist and from there they will be referred to their local Regional Fertility Hub, which provides a range of treatments and interventions for both males and females. Then where necessary, tertiary care (that is, IVF (in-vitro fertilisation), ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) and IUI (Intrauterine insemination), with patients being referred onwards through structured pathways.”
“This programme is a much hoped for development for couples or individuals in Ireland who are seeking fertility assistance and up until now have had to cover all financial costs of the treatment themselves. We are hopeful that this programme is the first of many to be rolled out over the coming years.”
