Na Gaeil GAA Club News

.

RIP: It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing last Thursday of Joan Murphy, nee O’Sullivan, of Ard Na Lí. Joan’s late husband Séamus was a founding member of our club and Joan herself will be fondly remembered as a great Na Gaeil woman.

She was instrumental in many fundraising events in those early years. Joan was pre-deceased by her son Breanndán who passed away in February 2022. May she rest in peace.

Lotto results: Lotto Tue 19th September 2023. No winner. Numbers drawn were 3, 4, 23, 32. Lucky dip winners of €20 were Moira Godley, Mary & Eileen O’Shea, Pat & Geraldine McLaughlin, James Moynihan, Cathy Carey. Tomorrow night’s jackpot will be €3,800. Why not try your luck in our lotto. The links is as follows:https://www.klubfunder.com/Clubs/Na%20Gaeil%20CLG/lotto

Senior Ladies: Our senior ladies lost to Southern Gaels yesterday in their final group game in the Senior County Championship and unfortunately that result means they miss out on a semi-final spot.

Senior Men: Last Saturday in Killeen Na Gaeil took on Dr. Crokes in Round 2 of the Garvey’s SuperValu Senior County Championship.

The game started in ideal weather conditions and it was the Crokes who were fastest out of the blocks.

Their first attack brought a great save from Devon Burns as he tipped the ball onto the crossbar and the follow-up shot was blocked by a Na Gaeil defender before a Crokes forward eventually put the ball across the goal and wide.

It was an early let off for Na Gaeil but Dr Crokes maintained their pressure and secured the game’s first point on 4 minutes. A Devon Burns free levelled the game before a free for Dr Crokes put them back in front after 8 minutes.

Immediately afterwards Dr. Crokes squandered another goal chance much to the relief of the locals. Diarmuid O’Connor was coming more into the game and kicked a super point from 40 meters out to level matters at 2 points apiece.

Dr. Crokes continued to enjoy a lot of possession and added another point from play. Both teams had a wide each before another Dr. Crokes point put them 4-2 ahead. Another powerful run by Diarmuid O’Connor saw him take on the visitor’s defence and kick another great score, this time off his left boot.

The tigerish Na Gaeil defence were beginning to get to grips with the Dr. Crokes forwards at this stage and a brilliant steal from Stefan Okunbor in the corner back position led to our next score, a point from Jack Sheehan.

A minute later it was Jack Sheehan again who put Na Gaeil ahead for the first time scoring a lovely point after a clever dummy solo. Dr. Crokes were soon level again but Tomás Ó hAiniféin added the last score of the half in injury time to leave Na Gaeil ahead by 6 points to 5 at the break.

Dr. Crokes were level within a minute of the restart but our lads continued to drive forward and were rewarded when Damien Bourke was fouled and Devon edged us ahead once more from the resultant free.

The as ever hard-working James O’Connor popped up with the next score to extend our lead to 2 points but the Crokes replied immediately with a point of their own.

Jack Barry won the next kickout and launched a 40m pass into Darragh Reen who did brilliantly to call the mark and subsequently kicked a valuable point. At this stage the weather had deteriorated with persistent rain now falling.

Super work again in defence by Jack Doyle and Niall O’Mahony led to another excellent point from Tomás Ó hAiniféin and with 17 minutes remaining Na Gaeil led by 3.

Dr. Crokes continued to enjoy plenty possession but squandered numerous opportunities before eventually adding a point to their tally on the 17 minute mark.

Then it was Na Gaeil’s turn to waste some great chances as 2 potential goal opportunities went abegging in quick succession.

Dr. Crokes continued to lay siege on our goal but some excellent defending by our lads and more poor shooting kept them at bay until the 34th minute when Tony Brosnan did finally manage to grab what would be the game’s final point.

The final whistle was greeted with great jubilation as the win means the lads have secured a place in the quarter-finals.

In the meantime they will face Dingle (away) next Saturday in Round 3 at 2pm.

Final score was Na Gaeil 0-10, Dr. Crokes 0-9. Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club News

.

Senior:

Kerins O’Rahillys 0-11

Spa                      1-10

In a contest where a win would have guaranteed us a quarter final place in this year’s senior county championship, we were undone by a Spa side who never gave in, never gave up and eventually  got the goal which was the winning of this game.

The opening exchanges were cagey and oft times niggly, with Barry John picking up a yellow card for an off the ball incident with Dan O’Donoghue inside the opening minutes, but we had the opening scores from the in form Tom Hoare who lofted over twice with his trusty left foot following Spa indiscretions.

Michael O’Donoghue had Spa level when pointing twice from play and scores were traded over the remaining minutes with fine marks by Barry John and Conor Hayes, both placed beautifully by a deep lying Tommy with Tom Hoare and David also hitting the target.

Spa for their part kept the scoreboard ticking over and the sides retired at the short whistle, level on 0-06 each.

Jack Savage on his return from the US,  joined the fray following an unfortunate injury to Barry John and his introduction led to the yellow carding of Dan O’Donoghue for some off the ball shenanigans.

Jack too was carded following the intervention of the linesman as the sides trooped to the dressing rooms.

The second half saw us gain the upper hand in the opening 10 minutes with good scores coming from Tom Hoare, a free and points from Darragh O’Connor and Tommy – indeed Tommy’s was a beautiful effort as he curled the ball inside the upright from range.

We were managing the game well with our defence in a mean mood where Chucky kept a tight rein on Kerry player Dara Moynihan along with some fine defending from Ross and Con; with David, Tom and Gazza working hard around the middle, harassing and hounding players in possession, we looked the likely winners at that stage.

The turning point in the game occurred in the 42nd minute when Ben was black carded following the intervention of the linesman – his loss in the circumstances was huge as Spa now had the extra man and notched 1-02 to 0-1 in this period.

Their goal came in the 51st minute when Shane Cronin raided from deep and following an inter change of passes the ball was slid into the corner of the net by Cian Murphy;  it was a fatal blow as it left Spa in the lead for only the second time in the game and with  Dan O’Donoghue raiding  forward for another score Spa stretched the lead to two points, 1-09 to 0-10.

Tom pulled one back, but we could not find a way past a resolute defence to force the goal which would have pulled the game out of the fire.

It’s a disappointing loss and leaves us with an uphill task as we face Mid Kerry away next weekend in our final game – they had a 4-07 to 1-10 win over Shannon Rangers in Asdee and will be favourites with home advantage.

Match details will be published on social media once confirmed.

However, we have much to play for and a reproduction of today’s efforts would see us go close – our away form this year has been much more impressive than that produced at home and an upset cannot be ruled out.

Team:

Shane Foley, Jake Foley, Ross O’Callaghan, Ryan Carroll, Con Barrett, Shane Brosnan, Ben Hanafin, David Moran (0-1), Tom Hoare (0-5, 4f), Gearóid Savage, Barry John Keane (0-1m), Shane McElligott, Darragh O’Connor (0-1), Tommy Walsh (0-1), Conor Hayes (0-2, 1m) Subs: Jack Savage for BJ Keane, 27, Diarmuid O’Sullivan for G Savage, 52, BJ Keane for C Hayes, 57 Black Card: Ben Hanafin, 42-52

McElligott Cup:

We lost at home on Saturday evening in the semi final of the McElligott Cup when conceding a goal in the 35th minute to Fossa resulting in a heartbreaking defeat, 1-09 to 1-08.

The game was played in horrendous conditions and we had the backing of the elements in the first half; we were solid throughout with our defence on top where Sam Pituch was outstanding along with great support from Barry and Jordan Foley and Stephen Nix.

We led at half time 1-06 to 0-03 with the goal coming on the stroke of half time through Keelan Crowe following a flowing team move – Daniel Bowler(3fs), Sam McCarthy ( 1f), Seán Walsh (1f) and Conor O’Sullivan from play were the points scorers.

The second half saw Fossa pile on the pressure but our defence stood firm and we were still in the ascendancy 1-06 to 0-07 after 20 mins. Sam had our opening point 23 minutes in and when Paudie Griffin shot over 3 mins later,  following good play from Daniel Bowler we were once again 3 to the good, 1-08 to 0-08.

Fossa continued to press but had only a single point to show for their efforts as the clock ticked beyond the 30 mins but for some reason the referee added an additional 5 minutes.

A Fossa attack in the 33rd minute was repelled and we cleared our lines but a Fossa  free from the middle of the pitch saw the ball fall kindly in the square and it ended up in the net – it was a cruel way to lose a game where we were never led but in that final few seconds.

Well done to the team and management for a great showing but lady luck was not on our side.

Team: Seán Collins, TJ Heaphy, Sam Pituch, Stephen Nix, Jordan Foley, Seán Collins, Barry Foley, Fenton Collins, Daniel Nix, Daniel Bowler, Seán Walsh, Paudie Griffin, Sam McCarthy, Keelan Crowe, Conor O’Sullivan.

Subs used: Donagh Buckley, Ben O’Brien.

Under 9 boys and coaches.

Juveniles:

The weather was no match for our determined juveniles who braved the bad weather Sunday morning at academy training and games both away and at home.

We are so proud of all our juveniles who have been so committed all year and turn up always with a smile on their face and leave with an even bigger one.

We wouldn’t be able to run our academy without our fantastic coaches and committee who volunteer every week and we are so thankful for each and everyone of them. We were delighted to hear that Lily’s surgery went well and she is back home recovering.

You truly are an inspiration Lily.

Under 5s and 6s

Academy training continued for our U5, U7 Boys and U6, U8 and U10 Girls on Sunday morning despite the downpours each group got stuck in and didn’t let the rain stop them. They showed great determination and skills in wet conditions which is great to see considering how much it rains! Each group did different drills concentrating on kicking, passing and teamwork getting the ball up and down the field.

Under 9 boys and coaches.

Our U9 Boys had an eventful week as we travelled to take on Fossa Sunday morning. Mother Nature decided to test them with a downpour, but our young lads didn’t let it deter them. The games were highly competitive and it’s great to see the team progress every week. Thank you to Fossa for hosting us and we look forward to playing Ye again in the future. Training continues next week as usual.

Our U11 boys welcomed John Mitchell’s GAA to Ballyrickard Sunday morning where they enjoyed some very sporting games against each other in very challenging conditions. But the boys all put on a great display of football with some fantastic teamwork and scores involved. Well done to everyone on a fantastic morning of football and thank you to John Mitchell’s for coming to play us. Training continues next Sunday morning in Ballyrickard at usual time.

To Celebrate our U13 boys Double Central League Champions victories we are going to have a well deserved Awards and Medals presentation in the Clubhouse this Wednesday evening from 7.15pm.

Senior Ladies
Bons Secours Junior A Championship

Round 6

In what was dreadful conditions for a football match, our ladies kept their place at the top of the Junior A rankings after a well-deserved 5-11 to 1-8 victory over a very game Kilcummin side.

The comprehensive scoreline did not look likely as we struggled to adapt to the weather conditions, dropping a lot of ball and in particular giving away too many turnovers, which one in particular hurt us as Kilcummin broke away to score a goal against the run of play.

This put them into 1-2 to 0-4 with 23 minutes of the first half gone. But when the chips are down then our ladies rise to the occasion and two minutes later, after a lovely flowing move, Rachel Creedon finishes to the net.

With another point each, the teams went in at halftime with Ballymac leading by 2 points 1-5 to 1-3. One positive from the first half was that after going 2 points to no score down, we had responded with 4 points on the bounce from Kate Collins (2), Keelin Enright and Eve Creedon.

If we could sustain the type of movement then the second half would go our way. We also had to improve on our shooting accuracy as we were only 38% compared to 58% for Kilcummin.

The start of the second half was worrying as Kilcummin were first to score and our lead was just the minimum.

However yet again we stepped it up and a quick-fire point from Kate Collins and a trademark Roisin Rahilly goal, put Ballymac into the clear. From here we took control of the game, with further goals from Lisa Curran, Una Morrissey and Kerry Hennessy putting the game out of sight.

Next week now becomes our most vital game of the year-, as victory away in Killorglin versus Laune Rangers would give us a home semi-final.

Today’s squad was as follows, Robyn White, Grainne Galvin, Niamh Rahilly Anna Collins, Ciara Kerins, Una Morrissey (1-0), Rachel Griffin, Aishling O’Connell, Eve Creedon (0-1), Roisin Rahilly (1-1), Keelin Enright (0-1), Rachel Creedon (1-1), Ella Quirke, Kate O’Connor, Kate Collins (0-6). Ellie McElligott and Lisa Curran (1-1) HT for Ella and Kate, Caoimhe Carroll for Una Kerins, Kerry Hennessy (1-0) for Aishling O’Connell, Ella Quirke for Rachel Griffin and Kate O’Connor for Grainne Galvin.

Minor Boys

Ballymacelligott GAA v Ardfert GAA – Minor – Group B – Final – Club Championship

Ballymacelligott GAA 2-05 (11)

Ardfert GAA  1-11 (14)

On a blustery, wet day in Blennerville, our Ballymac minors played Ardfert GAA in the final of the Group B (Intermediate championship minor equivalent) on Saturday, 23rd of September. The boys had trained well in preparation for the game and also came to the final with their new kit bags kindly sponsored by Brendan Martin of Flo Gas.

In the first half, in windy conditions, scores were at a premium for both teams. Early in the first half, Ardfert were awarded a penalty which was well slotted away by Ardfert in the bottom left corner.

Worthy of mention was a perfectly struck free from the left-hand side around the 21-yard line by Mairtin McKivergan that went straight between the posts, an incredible effort in tricky conditions. The score at the Half Time break was Ballymac 0-3, Ardfert 1-3.

To the oppositions credit, they took full advantage of the stiff breeze at their back in the second period with many fine scores on display aided by the wind. We found ourselves well behind with 10 minutes to go but, in fairness to the resilience that these young men have shown in spades all year, they never threw in the towel even in the most difficult, wet & windy conditions.

Two goals in the last 10 minutes by the powerful runner that is Shane Gilroy brought us back within 3 but the clock beat us in the end. Ardfert ran out winners on a scoreline of 2-05 to 1-11.

There was a great air of disappointment amongst players, management & the immense Ballymac support that showed up despite the conditions and was much appreciated by the players and management.

The future of Ballymac football is in safe hands based on these group of fine young men. This final might not have been our day but there will be better days to come in the future.

Having won a central region title and getting to the final of a club championship is no small achievement and the lads can hold their heads high after a good year. Ballymac ABU.

Under 6s and 7s Boys and Girls

Our under 6s and 7s trained indoors together this Sunday morning past at our Ballyseedy complex.  The weather was too extreme to be outdoors. The boys and girls had a great session full of full and laughter.

Under 8 and 10 Girls

Our u8 & u10 girls had a good turnout for Sunday morning training in wet conditions.

A quick warmup followed by a game. Everyone had great fun with some fantastic skills on display. There be training again next Sunday @10:30, new players are always welcome.

Under 12 Girls

Thanks to Brian Nammock for taking last week’s training. We have consistently good numbers at training and this has helped to form a great team spirit. We have only a couple of weeks left  and we must thank Abbeydorney for inviting us to their Blitz Sun October 1st. It will an opportunity to show off our hard work in training.

Under 13 girls who faced Dr crokes at home on Friday evening.

Under 13 Girls

We faced Dr Crokes at home in Ballyseedy on Friday evening in the County Championship Semi Final.

The game was played in ideal conditions and in front of a large crowd of supporters who came to support both sides.

We began the game brightly and points from Hannah Roche, Caoimhe Nammock and a Ciara Harris free and a goal from Amy Noonan had us ahead leading up to the short whistle only for a fortuitous Crokes goal right on the stroke of half time, reduced their deficit to 3 points.

The second half began well and our fullback line of Alannah Doody, Aisling Kelliher and Roisin Locke were defending well under immense Crokes pressure and it paid dividends as a Caoimhe Nammock goal after 13 minutes put some daylight between ourselves and the Killarney side.

The forward line was working hard, Caoimhe Lennon, Kayla Kirwan and Áine Dowling never stopped running.

Grace O’Regan’s kick outs were the springboard for all our attacks and our defence was working non stop and our halfback line of Natalia Hennig, Ava Byrne and Nicole Mc Cannon who were resolute and ensured that our lead was protected.

We finished out the game very strongly and it took the crossbar on two occasions to prevent Anna Marie Perkins from adding to the scoreboard.

As the final whistle approached Millie O Mahony after some great work by Sophie Maloney and Maddison O Meara finished off an extend period of pressure with a fine goal.

Final Score John Mitchels 3-04 Dr Crokes 2-03. Our girls can be extremely proud of how they played and great credit is due to all 20 girls who lined out. Congratulations to the girls for making the final.

U15 girls who faced Kerins O Rahillys on Thursday evening.

Under 14 Girls

It was a proud moment for the John Mitchels u15 girls team when they came out onto the pitch in Austin Stack Park on Tuesday night last, to take on local rivals Kerins O’Rahillys in the u15 D Championship Final.

After a long season, which has already seen the u14s capture 3 trophies between their Green and Gold teams, it was hoped that they could add another trophy to the cabinet.

It was always going to be a difficult task against the Strand Road club who had a number of strong players, and the team were well warned about their threat.

Conditions were horrible though, with driving wind and rain, which made playing ball difficult, and the Mitchels struggled to impose themselves in the game, with O’Rahillys getting early scores and a well worked goal when Mitchels failed to clear.

The second quarter of the game saw Mitchels really come into the game, with Laoise O’Sullivan, Ava Sharma, Amy Noonan and Hannah Roche working hard, but despite a few missed chances, a goal and a point from Lisa O’Shea left just six points in it at the break, with Mitchels also a player up due to a red card for a Kerins O’Rahillys player.

The second half had Mitchels against the strong wind though and combined with direct running from the O’Rahillys key players, the game went away from us.

A number of injuries to key players also affected us at the wrong time, and as the game moved on, Kerins O’Rahillys were deserved winners on the day. A disappointing result, but the team has been excellent all year and will take the learnings from it.

There was better news for the u13s as they won their u13 Championship semi-final against Dr Crokes on Friday evening and they won through to their final, joining the u15s in reaching a County Championship Final. They will face either Austin Stacks or Fossa in the Final, with the other semi-final played on Sunday.

North Kerry League: The u14 Gold Team will take on local rivals St Pats in their first game of the North Kerry League when they play in Ballyseedy on Tuesday next, at 6pm in the floodlit pitch.

Under 16 Girls

The U16 girls had their first Round of U16 Division 2 Thursday evening away to Beale. We kicked off well with our defence holding strong getting quick ball into our forwards adding to the scoreboard.

Into the second half once again we managed a few scores with Beale always returning a score. Towards the last quarter our girls fought hard with some work ons coming from the game.

Beale took the win. We go again Monday evening away to Kerins O’Rahillys in Ballyrickard pitch Throw in 6:30pm.

Under 9 Boys

John Mitchels U9 Boys had their training session cut short on Sunday Morning last due to the bad weather. In fairness to the Boys we got about 40mins in but unfortunately it just got too bad. Training continues this Wednesday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm in our Sports Hall.

Under 11 Boys

This week the Under 1 boys had two challenge games. We hosted Ballymac on Thursday night and we visited Kerin O Rahillys on Sunday morning. It was great to get games at this time of the year and on both occasions we had a fantastic turn out. The coaches were very proud of the boys as they played some great football. Many thanks for Ballymac and Kerin O Rahillys for two very sporting games. Training continues next Sunday at 10.30

Under 13 Boys

All players trained extremely hard in anticipation of the Division 1 town final, the game was postponed due to inclement weather, and we now await the re-fixture

Under 15 Boys

On Wednesday last the 20th Sept we faced Austin stacks in the semi-final of the Central League at home in Ballyseedy on a fine evening for football we got off to  a good start racking up some early scores to and really top class defending to see us lead by a couple of points at the break the second half started lively and we soon took control of the game and were well in control throughout the half our forwards combining well to find the net on 3 occasions finally running out winners on a score line of Mitchels 3-8 Austin Stacks 1-4.

We now pogress to the final in a couple of weeks training. Well done team and mentors on a fantastic result Na Misteallaig Abu.

Choose The County Championship Team Of The 21st Century

.
Pictured is Mairéad Kennedy, Cloonties, Ballyferriter, the first customer to submit her ‘Team Of The Century’ player picks at Garvey’s Supervalu DIngle under the watchful eye of Kevin O’Connor, Garvey’s Supervalu Dingle Store Manager.

GARVEYS Supervalu in association with Kerry GAA have announced that they will be unveiling a senior football county championship team of the 21st century at this year’s Garvey’s Supervalu senior county final.

The top 15 players that will go into the history books will be chosen from the finalists and winning teams from the year 2000 to 2022 by five judges.

The judges include All-Ireland winning selector with Kerry and three times a county championship winning manager with East Kerry Sean Counihan, former Kerry ladies legends Geraldine O’Shea and Mary Joe Curran, the legendary Eoin ‘Bomber’ Liston and Donal Barry, host of the Radio Kerry’s Terrace Talk.

The Team Of The Century is part of a new marketing campaign by title sponsors Garvey’s Supervalu called ‘Heirs To The Kingdom’ which celebrates the past and present legends of this fabled competition.

The good news is Kerry fans can get involved. The judges have just unveiled their top three picks per position to get some heated GAA debate going across the county and Kerry GAA fans also have the chance to submit their team too to win prizes.

Those interested in submitting their chosen team can find entry forms in any Garvey’s Supervalu store in Kerry, where you can choose your top player per position.

If your choice matches that of our judges, then you will be entered into a draw to win hundreds of euros of Garvey’s Supervalu vouchers and the winners will also be announced live on County Final day.

Jim Garvey, Director, Garvey Group said, “We are delighted to be bringing some excitement beyond the matches themselves to this year’s competition. When you analyse the teams to choose from, there are a myriad of legendary players who won or were finalists in county finals over the past 22 years and it will be a difficult task to choose the final team. Many of those that have made the shortlist of 45 players never played county football but excelled in this competition which shows the knowledge coming through from our judges.”

Peter Twiss, Kerry County Board GAA Secretary commented, “The senior football county championship is our biggest competition and every club in Kerry has that opportunity to have a player represent them on a big stage. We are delighted to support the Team Of The Century project as it will create an added buzz throughout the next two months and of course add to the excitement of County Final day.”

Look out for entry forms and entry boxes from at the checkout at Garvey’s Supervalu stores across Kerry.
