A Kerry man was delighted to visit Lotto HQ today to collect his €1 million cheque after winning the Lotto Plus 1 top prize on Wednesday 13th September.

“I saw the email on my phone telling me to check my ticket while I was out and about. I looked at it and was in total shock – I then had to drive home and I swear I almost crashed the car! As soon as I got in the door, I went in to tell my wife and show her the phone.

“Of course, it’s my own fault that she didn’t believe me straight away because I am such a messer and would totally pretend that I’d won – but this time there was no joking! She eventually took the phone and checked the ticket while I called out the numbers. It was only then that she believed me and the two of us were sat there counting the zeros making sure it was definitely real,” he said.

“I was on to the Claims Department first thing the following Monday to confirm the win. Part of me had worried that my phone had been hacked and it was a horrible trick being played! I was delighted to hear that it was definitely real.”

The online winner admitted that having the ticket in his online account saved him a lot of worry over the past two weeks: “I’m so glad I played online because I’m not sure that I’d be able for the pressure of minding a physical ticket. It was a long two weeks getting organized for our trip up here to pick up the cheque so I can only imagine what I’d be like with keeping a ticket safe on top of that. I am thrilled to finally have the cheque in my hand and to make plans with the family for what we’ll do. Looking at houses and planning for our future is most definitely top of the list – the timing is perfect!”

Daly Calls For Action On Capacity Issue On Bus Route To Tralee

.
Deputy Pa Daly.

SINN Fein TD for Kerry, Pa Daly, has called for ministerial intervention to solve capacity issues on the 272 bus route from Ballybunion to Tralee.

This follows reports that a number of students waiting for the 8am bus were left stranded on Tuesday as it was full to capacity.

“I am hearing from constituents that people are being left at the side of the road due to demand,” said Deputy Daly.

“We had understood that capacity would be looked at for this route, and of course the more people can be accommodated on public transport, the better for climate emissions. Students and workers rely on the service to attend college or work in Tralee, and the route passes through Listowel as well as Ballybunion.

“Both Councillor Tom Barry and I have contacted Transport for Ireland and the Minister. The matter should be urgently looked into by the Service Planning team and the Minister should intervene also.”

The Green-Schools Travel Programme works in partnership with schools to promote active, sustainable travel on the journey to school.

These are focused on giving students and the school’s wider community the tools to change habits, build better ones and create a school environment that is accessible and enjoyable for all.

The programme offers a range of resources to support schools at primary and secondary level, and takes into account the reality that walking the full distance to school is not always possible:  Park’n’Stride is an alternative which is also encouraged.

This week a webinar on Walking Buses hosted by Green-Schools gave attendees ideas and information focused on creating walking buses in their schools.

Walk to School Week organisers are keen to remind everyone of the changes everyone in a community can make to allow children and young people enjoy active journey to school.

Speeding, idling engines, poor driving behaviour and footpath parking all impact the journey to school.

Walk to School Week is one of four annual week-long call to action events run by the Green-Schools Travel Programme.

Clean Air Week follows in November, followed by Scoot to School Week in March and Bike Week in May.

Walk to School Week is facilitated in just under 500 schools directly by Green-Schools Travel Officers and in almost 2,000 more schools awarded previously for their sustainable and active travel efforts. For more see https://greenschoolsireland.org/walk-to-school-week-2023/
