THE Friday night of the Festival used to see the county’s most glamorous night of the year in the shape of the Rose Ball, but sadly that appears to be consigned to history.

But there was still great style to behold last night as the Fall Designer Fashion Show, in association with Kerry Cancer Support Group, was held at The Rose Hotel.

Around 200 ladies were present at the hotel, enjoying a welcome reception of champagne and canapés followed by the main event at 8pm.

The fashion show saw the latest autumn collections from top designers Synan O’Mahony and Cathy Troth to name a few, along with some of Kerry’s top boutiques including MacBees, Annburys & Scarlette.

Guests continued the celebration at the after party with live entertainment in Dott’s Bar from Rod Stewart, Joe Dolan, and Tom Jones tribute acts.

There were spot prizes worth €3,000, including a prize for the best dressed lady. Additionally, guests received goodie bags sponsored by Horan’s Healthstore. Proceeds from the event went to Kerry Cancer Support Group. Scroll down for photos…

PREVIEW: Kerry Welcome Bohemians For Sell-Out Cup Tie In Mounthawk Park

.

Ivan Hurley previews a massive game in the short history of Kerry FC as they welcome Irish football royalty, Bohemian FC in the Sports Direct Men’s FAI Cup Third Round clash in Mounthawk Park on Sunday afternoon…

It’s the game the majority of the Kerry faithful have been counting down to since the draw was made a number of weeks ago.

The famous Bohemians are the visitors to Mounthawk Park tomorrow. Tickets are like gold dust in the Kingdom, with the sold-out signs popping up after a matter of hours of first going on sale.

So with the Rose of Tralee festival in full swing in the town since Friday, the festival atmosphere is sure to make its way north of Denny Street to Mounthawk Park for the blockbuster occasion.

Continued below…

.

Having only faced one side from the top division in the past, the opportunity to welcome one of the country’s stand-out clubs is sure to be a memorable occasion for the Kerry faithful.

But progressing to the Quarter Final of the cup is the priority and a historic afternoon could quickly turn into a historic day in the club’s history should the underdog advance to the last eight.

Without a doubt, it would be a monumental undertaking for Kerry to dump last year’s finalists out of the competition, but anything is possible in Mounthawk Park.

Despite a disappointing defeat to Cobh in Tralee last time out, Kerry’s home form has been impressive in 2024, going 5 unbeaten in Mounthawk since early May.

Continued below…

.

Bohemians come into the game after a disappointing 3-2 defeat in Dalymount to Waterford FC, considering the Dubliners were 2-0 up in the game.

Bohemians needed a penalty to knock out Tallaght-based Shamrock Rovers out of the cup in the 2ndRound. Kerry were impressive in their 2-0 dispatching of Cobh Ramblers in St Colman’s Park back in July.

So the scene is set for a carnival clash in the home of Kerry football tomorrow afternoon, if you have a ticket hold it close to your chest and if not, make sure your calendar is kept clear from 4-6 pm on Sunday.

If you’re lucky enough to have a ticket, we are looking forward to welcoming you to Mounthawk Park. As ever, the game will be broadcast live on LOITV, with a pre-game show getting underway from 15:40 on Sunday afternoon. A full 3 camera set-up will be in place for the fixture.

The game will also be live on Radio Kerry’s Weekend Sport programme with full live and uninterrupted commentary from the gantry.

This is just the second time Kerry FC will face a team from the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division.

The Kingdom faced Drogheda United at this stage of the competition 12 months ago. Kerry went down by a single goal to nil on that occasion, hitting the crossbar on the way to a narrow defeat

Speaking to the media earlier this week, James Sugrue said they are waiting on an update regarding to new signing Oran Crowe’s availability.

Oran required several stitches after getting an elbow to the face in Friday’s defeat to Cobh Ramblers. Antonio Tuta has returned to training following an ankle injury picked up in the win against Cobh in the 2nd Round last month.

Valerii Dolia remains sidelined long term. New signing Cian Barrett is available for the game, he was on the bench for Shamrock Rovers in the defeat to Bohemians but as he didn’t make it onto the field, he isn’t cup-tied for this one

“Look we are just taking it as another game for us,” said James Sugrue. “Obviously, it’s knockout so it can all depend on the day. It’s very exciting, it’s great for the town, great for the county of Kerry and great for the club and supporters, but we must keep our heads down and work no differently from any other game.

“The players need to relish the occasion, go out and don’t let it pass them by. These are the games everyone wants to be involved in, in front of big crowds, but you have to turn up on the day, get the job done and move on to the quarter-final.”

Ballyduff Beat Crotta In A Thriller To Win Minor Title

.
Kerry Minor Hurling champions Ballyduff.

Mike O’Halloran reports on the Keane’s SuperValu Kerry Minor Hurling Final at Austin Stack Park on Friday evening…

Ballyduff are the Keane’s SuperValu Kerry minor hurling champions for 2024.  Ballyduff beat Crotta O’Neills by 1-17 to 2-10 in a fantastic display by both teams, with great skill and sportsmanship shown.

Crotta had the best of the first half and led at half time 2-07 to 0-09. A great display by Evan O’Sullivan where he scored two goals from long range frees.

Continued below…

.

Crotta were very impressive all through the first half and started the second half better than Ballyduff, but Ballyduff clawed their way back into the game with frees from Dylan Costello and a goal from Jake Rochford.

Crotta were awarded a free on 64 minutes to level the game. There were six Ballyduff players on the line and the ball was parried for a 65. Further scores from Ballyduff sealed the win. A great display from both sides.

Finnegan On Films: Two Eastwood Gems Among Some Classics On The Box

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, has some films on TV to distract you from the festival fun in Tralee tonight…

Somewhere between trying to fill that Olympic sized hole in our lives, and attempting to pick a winning Rose, comes a number of very entertaining films.

Where Eagles Dare (Saturday 2.50pm RTE1) is a staple of Saturday afternoon escapist cinema.  When an American general is held captive by the Nazis in a heavily defended fortress in the Alps, a crack team of British soldiers and an American Lieutenant are sent to rescue him.

However, it is apparent very soon that there is a traitor in their mist, and so begins a tale of double and triple cross with some pretty impressive action scenes and baddies who are, thankfully, terribly bad shots.

.

Starring Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood, Patrick Wymark, Mary Ure, Robert Beatty and Ingrid Pitt, this Alastair MacLean script and book were outstanding commercial successes. Plus there is the famous stirring Ron Goodwin theme in which to wallow.

Jack Black excels in a role that was quite literally written for him in School of Rock (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1)

Dewey Finn (Black) is an enthusiastic amateur rock musician who is fired from his band.  Posing as a supply teacher to make some money, he moulds his students into a rock band in an attempt to win the forthcoming Battle of the Bands.

This is a wonderfully entertaining film, where the children are all talented because director Richard Linklater insisted on the cast being able to play their instruments as well as sing.  The acting could be taught!

This also stars Joan Cusack, Sarah Silverman, Miranda Cosgrove and Mark White, and has gone on to spawn a very popular and successful Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.

Continued below…

.

Saving Private Ryan (Saturday 9.20pm RTE2), directed by Steven Spielberg, is renowned for the battleground scenes set during the Normandy landings, although it is not in fact the opening scene as is often stated.

A group of American soldiers search the battlefields of France, looking for a missing infantryman who has been given compassionate leave to return home, as his brothers have already been killed in this conflict.

As you would expect, there are many spectacular scenes, and of course with a cast including Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Edward Burns and Tom Sizemore among others, there is plenty of philosophy on the meaning of life and war which helped win Spielberg a Best Director Academy Award, although it perhaps surprisingly lost out on Best Picture to “Shakespeare in Love”

Play Misty for Me (Saturday 10.35pm TG4) is a superlative Clint Eastwood psychological thriller in which he stars and makes his directorial debut.

He plays DJ Dave Garver, who has what he considers to be a casual relationship with Evelyn (Jessica Walter).  However, Evelyn has a very different interpretation.  So when Dave takes up with an old flame Tobie (Donna Mills) you know it is not going to end well. Enjoy!
