Senior Ladies

Bons Secours Junior A County Championship

Round 1 v Laune Rangers

Match Report

In what was a clash of the Division 6 Corrib Oil League Champions Ballymacelligott versus Division 4 Champions Laune Rangers in Killorglin was going to be a tough task for our very young side.

The first half was very nip and tuck with the lead switching back and forth, Laune Rangers raced into a 1-1 to no score lead , but then our Ladies really started to play lovely football with plenty of support running, leading to a goal from Rachel Griffin and a point from a free by Sarah Scanlon.

Approaching halftime, we were heading by 2 points, but still only producing our fluid play in patches when we got hit for 1-2 in quick succession, leaving us down by a goal at halftime 2-5 to 1-5.

The second half, more especially the third quarter belonged to a fast moving, support running Ballymac Ladies, as they turned the screw, with our defence leading the way, it took Laune Rangers 23 minutes to open their second half account, at which stage the game was gone beyond them.

Sarah Scanlon with our second goal and 6 points from a mix of players, leaving us 6 points clear with 7 minutes to go. Laune Rangers did make it tight, bringing it back to a three-point game, but great defensive work kept it at that.

Final Score 2-11 Ballymacelligott 2-8 Laune Rangers.

Squad on the Day was,

Robyn White, Laura Kelly, Grainne Galvin, Ciara Kerins, Jaime Lee O’Connor, Una Morrissey, Anna Collins, Aisling O’Connell, Roisin Rahilly (0-2), Ellie McElliogott, Sarah Scanlon (1-4), Keelin Enright, Kate Collins(0-4), Rachel Griffin(1-1), Ella Quirke, Rachel Creedon, Emily O’Brien, Emma Daly, Kerry Hennessy, Caoimhe Carroll, Eve Creedon, Clare Kenny, Aoife Galvin, Emma Leen, Aoibhinn Broderick, Kate O’Connor, Lisa Curran, Tina Quinn.

Next Monday night sees our Ladies travel to Fossa to take on the side that we had a closely fought battle within our Junior B final of 2022. All Support would be greatly appreciated as this should have been our home championship game.

U7 Hurling
There was a fantastic evening of hurling in Caherslee last Wednesday for the county U7 blitz. Parnells had 2 teams in action who both displayed terrific skill and determination and have improved greatly over the past few months.

Congratulations to the Kerry U15 team & management on winning the Div 3 Shield Final last Saturday at the U15 National Blitz in Carlow. Special mention to Tralee Parnells players Evie O Sullivan, Jessica Leen (Joint Captain), Emma Gaynor, Aoibhin O Sullivan, Eimear Dillane, Georgia Kennedy, Siofra Murphy and Orla Costello and Club coach Ken Leen, part of the management team.

Kerry Academy Hurling
Well done to all Parnells players that represented Kerry over the weekend at U14, U15 and U16 level. The U14s and U16s both brought home silverware from their respective competitions.

Tralee Parnells Golf Classic – 6th September
In 2023, the club spent over €40,000 on preparing the pitch at Páirc na Darach to make it suitable for playing hurling and camogie – for ball-stops, nets, landscaping and sanding.

This year, the club has had to further invest in the pitch to make the playing surface safe and of sufficient quality to allow our young hurlers and camogie players display their skills on a top quality playing surface in a safe environment.

We have started to reap the rewards as both our U15 hurling and camogie teams won their county Feile na nGael titles this year and went on to represent Kerry with pride at the National Feile in Wexford in June, reaching their respective semi-finals.

Both those teams had used Pairc na Darach as their training base this year. As we don’t own this pitch, access to grants and other funding is very limited. It is likely that our spend on Pairc na Darach will be close to €20,000 this year.

To this end and to offset our spending, we are running our second Golf Classic in Beaufort Golf Club on Friday September 6th.

Last year’s inaugural event was a tremendous success and we were thrilled with the support we received. A team of 4 costs €300. Tee and Hole sponsorship opportunities also available.

This is our last fundraiser of the year so we are really looking for businesses to come on board to support the Juvenile side of the club.

We are also looking for businesses to sponsor prizes for the event. So we welcome any golfers from the club or friends and family to form a team. Text 0878377969 to book in a team.

Golf Classic – From all in John Mitchels would like to say a massive thank you to all of those who made our Annual Golf Classic held in Beaufort on August 23rd such a success.

To those who sponsored teams and tee boxes and those who contributed to the day in terms of product and refreshments the day could not have happened without your fantastic sponsorship.

To Tom, Bubbles and Thandi for all of their help with signs, refreshments and administration. Thanks to Sean from our senior team who volunteered on the day. To the team at Beaufort Golf Club for your professionalism and hospitality.

Finally a word of thanks to the committee who championed this fundraiser – Fergus Foley, Anthony McElligott, Pat Kearney, Eoin Kelleher, Rory Kilgallen and Brid McElligott. We all appreciate the time and effort that goes into organising this event which raises funds to support our football at the club. Thanks to each of you.

Senior Ladies – Bons Secours County Championship Round 1.

Killarney Legion 0-16  John Mitchels 2-08.

For the third time in the last month these 2 sides met, this time in the opening Round of the Bons Secours County Championship, on this occasion in Killarney Legion and it was the home side that came out on top of yet another epic encounter by 2 points.

The home side opened the brighter and were 2 points in front by the fifth minute thanks to scores from Lauren Carey and a free from Kate MC Carthy.  John Mitchels with Sarah Kilgallen and Simi Ogungsbesan  getting on top in midfield reduced the leeway with a point from a free from Niamh Myers following a foul on Grace Hamilton.

Then a wonderful free flowing move involving Anna Murphy Stack, Diana O’ Keeffe, Ashleigh Murphy and Shannon Martin ended with Aoife O’Brien playing in Ava Buckley O’Connell for John Mitchels opening goal in the tenth minute to put the visitors 2 points in front.

From the kick out, Tara Fitzgerald released Erica O’ Connor who found her sister Lynda with a deft pass and Lynda played in Rachel Kilgallen who was fouled in the square and from the resultant penalty, Niamh Myers gave Killarney Legion goalkeeper, Amy Walshe no chance as she blasted the ball to the net to increase John Mitchels lead to 5 points.

This score seemed to spark the home team into life and 3 pointed frees from Kate Mc Carthy and a point from play from Orianne Mc Gillycuddy had reduced the lead to a single point approaching the half time whistle and on the stroke of half time another Kate Mc Carthy free had the sides level at half time, 0-07 to 2-01.

After the half time interval, John Mitchels seemed to reorganise themselves and 2 pointed frees from Niamh Myers and a point from play from Ava Buckley O’Connell pushed them 3 points up by the fifth minute.

Orianne Mc Gillycuddy responded with a point from play for Killarney Legion to cut the deficit to 2 points but then John Mitchels took complete control and 3 points from frees from Niamh Myers increased the visitors lead to 5 midway through the second half.

Killarney Legion then introduced Ciara Randles, Lauren Horgan and Aisling Cahill and this seemed to turn the tide that was beginning to flow against them.

Firstly Orianne Mc Gillycuddy scored her third point of the night, then Ciara Randles scored 2 pointed frees and this was followed by points from Lauren Carey and a free from Kate Mc Carthy had the sides level with 8 minutes remaining.

Ciara added 2 points one from a free and one from play to push Killarney Legion 2 points in front before John Mitchels goalkeeper, Kayleigh Collins produced a wonderful save to keep the visitors hopes alive.

John Mitchels introduced Clara Dowd but it was the home side that increased the lead to 3 through a pointed free from Kate Mc Carthy.

John Mitchels poured forward in an effort to score the equalising goal but some solid defence and heroic goalkeeping denied them and, in the end, they could only conjure up a late pointed free from Niamh Myers before the referee blew the full-time whistle to leave the final score Killarney Legion 0-16 John Mitchels 2-08.

Following the side’s 3 meetings there is only an aggregate of 2 points between the teams which over 3 hours of football is practically nothing.

Again we had in excess of 20 players in attendance for the fixture, we are welcoming back a number of players to the squad and we are starting to build up a nice support base which is very encouraging for everyone involved.

While we may have lost our opening game in the group, we are determined to put that right in our remaining fixtures in an attempt to prolong our season. We play Kilcummin at home Monday at 7.15pm.

Minor Team – We play North Kerry in Moyvane in the quarter final of the County Championship on Monday evening at 7pm. Well done to the team and management on qualifying for this stage of the competition.

Under 14 Girls – Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm as we prepare for the North Kerry League which was due to start this week, but was postponed due to the passing of Nora Fealys mother. On behalf of all of us in John Micthels we pass our condolences to Nora and family.

Under 16 Girls – Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm. We have qualified for the county Under 16 League semi-final and our work over the next number of training sessions is to focus on full preparation for this game.

Under 11 Boys – There was no game for this group this week so we trained as normal on Sunday. Attendance was very good and the boys worked well through the various drills that the coaches gave them.

A friendly game against Ballymac has been arranged for next Sunday in place of training. Until then please keep practicing. Any new or returning players are always welcome.

Under 13 Boys – We lost by 3 points to local rivals Austin Stacks in a wet Ballyseedy on Thursday evening. Despite this result, the Gold Team are still through to a semi-final in the Central League.

Fixture details to follow. \Our Green Team plays Thursday v Austin Stacks in Mitchels at 7pm. This is the last round of the Central League. All support would be appreciated.

Well done to our Blennerville/ Ballyard athletes who travelled to the National Community Games finals in Carlow on Saturday 24th August.

Thomas Higgins was unfortunate not to be able to travel due to injury, we wish him a speedy recovery.

It was a great experience but a day of 5th Place for our athletes. The U14 relay team of Hugh, Rían, Tommy and Eddie (Stephen on holidays) were well drilled and ran to the best of their ability in a very fast heat with the top 4 qualifying for semifinals.

They finished strongly in 5th place. Harriet O’Loghlen jumped fantastically to earn her a place in the U12 girls long jump final. She jumped 4.05m finishing 5th just 1cm outside the medals!

Thank you to all the organisers, participants, and parents for making the long journey and lifelong memories for all! Seniors:

Following our elimination from the intermediate championship last weekend, the focus now will be on the senior county championship which commences on the weekend of 14th/15th September.

We will compete as part of St Brendans divisional side along with Austin Stacks, Ardfert, Churchill, St Pats & John Mitchels.

St Brendans have been drawn against South Kerry in the opening round which will be played on Sunday 15th @ 4 pm in Austin Stack Park as part of a double header with Mid Kerry taking on Dingle in the second game.

The format for this year’s championship is the old “ Christy Ring “ system whereby the 8 winners of round 1 will progress to round 2A and will play each other in the 2nd round – the winners of these games will progress to the quarter finals. The losers progress to round 3A.

The opening round 1 losers will progress to round 2B where the 8 teams will play off with the winners progressing to round 3A where they will play the losers of the round 2A games – the losers in this round will exit the championship having lost two games.
