THE award-winning series ‘Bailte’ returns to TG4 this week for its 4th season with Síle Nic Chonaonaigh continuing her journey through the townlands of Ireland.
The first episode this Thursday at 8pm sees Síle visit Clochán Breánainn, on the northern side of Leithinis an Daingin where poet Micheál Ó Ruairc shows her some local points of interest, including the Church where Crom Dubh’s statue once stood.
She meets renowned sheep shearer Thomas O’Connor and takes a trip to see An Sás with Eugene Lyne.

Her attempt to serve ice-cream for Pádraig Ó Murchú of Murphy’s Pub doesn’t quite go to plan but she might win a hand or two playing cards under Máiréad Ní Dhubhda’s keen eye.
Síle finishes her visit to the area with a night of music and song at the Tinteán Ceoil, a favourite for locals and visitors.
During the series, Síle explores the resilience of our rural communities and reveals the deep connection people have with their townland and how local landscapes and traditions remain a constant influence on our daily lives.
The series is a celebration of the hard-working and vibrant communities who are doing their very best to ensure their own community is more than just a mere layby and a pretty stop-off along the Wild Atlantic Way.
FORMER Kerry senior football captain Billy O’Shea is seeking to be the Fine Gael candidate for the upcoming General Election.
The 1997 All-Ireland winner confirmed today that he is going for the nomination to contest the upcoming General Election at the Fine Gael selection convention.
The convention for Kerry Fine Gael members is due to be held later this month. Mr O’Shea, originally from Listowel, works as a publican and auctioneer in Killorglin.

“While all aspects of Irish life are important to me, I have a keen interest in the housing market given my background in this area as an auctioneer and what people in the county here are facing,” said Mr O’Shea in a statement issued this afternoon outlining his intentions.
“I want Kerry people to be able to live and work in their home communities, there is no better place in the world to live. I also have a keen interest in the health sector. My father was the local GP in Listowel for many years and I’m well aware of the importance of rural communities having their own health services – they are a precious and much valued resource.
“Prior to becoming self-employed, I worked as a veterinarian representative and gained a big insight into the agricultural sector before joining AIB and worked in both Kenmare and Caherciveen branches for four years.”

“Given I am located in the Mid-Kerry area, we are within a reasonable distance of all areas to help the needs of the constituents of the county. I would like to be in a position to continue the good work of the outgoing TD, Brendan Griffin, who brought a lot of stability to the county following the economic crash.”
“I acknowledge the difficult economic climate that we are facing into with rising costs of living in all areas and I am under no illusion of the challenges that lay ahead. But this a challenge I would relish if nominated by Fine Gael members at the upcoming convention,” Mr O’Shea said.
Mr O’Shea is married to Emir Irwin from Killarney. They have three children; Abigail, Liam, and Peter.

THE relics of St Bernadette will be brought to a church in Tralee next week.
Our Lady and St Brendan’s Church will host the relics over Friday/Saturday, September 13/14. In 1858, the young girl, Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, said she experienced multiple apparitions of the Virgin Mary. After a canonical investigation, Soubirous’s reports were declared worthy of belief.
Bernadette died in 1879 and was later canonized in 1933. Her relics will journey on pilgrimage to Ireland for the very first time, visiting every diocese in the country from September 4th to November 5th this year.

This will provide an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to experience the special gifts and charisms of Lourdes in their diocese.
The relics will be brought to St Brendan’s Church on Friday September 13th at 12 noon. At 3pm there will be the Stations of the Cross. At 6.30pm there will be a Mass and at 8.30pm the Rosary and Veneration concludes.
On Saturday, there will be Mass at 9.30am, a Mass for the sick with Sacrament of Anointing at 12 noon and Rosary at 4pm. Vigil Mass will be celebrated at 6.30pm and a Torchlight procession and Veneration take place at 9pm.
CANCER support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, was a hive of activity on Friday morning as over 40 members of Network Ireland Kerry visited the Tralee premises for a special coffee morning and centre tour.
The event was a joint initiative between Network Ireland Kerry and their charity partner for 2024, and was also attended by a number of special guests, including Minister Norma Foley, Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Mikey Sheehy, along with local gardaí, Mary Gardiner and Aidan O’Mahony.
Welcoming guests to the event, Network Ireland Kerry President, Linda O’Mahony-Logan, spoke of her delighted at having chosen to collaborate with Recovery Haven Kerry during her term, describing the morning as ‘really special’.

“When we launched 14 months ago, every president gets to choose a charity partner, and for me choosing Recovery Haven was a no-brainer. It was so easy because at Network Ireland Kerry we’re all about support and creating a community of support for businesswomen -be they employers, employees or entrepreneurs. We are all about making connections and about having a safe place to go, and we know that those same values are very strong here at Recovery Haven too.”
She also paid tribute to the charity’s volunteers who give so much to Recovery Haven daily, and who were instrumental in creating such a beautiful setting for Friday’s event.
Recovery Haven’s Client Services Co-ordinator, Siobhan MacSweeney, also spoke about the importance of working with Network Ireland Kerry, and encouraged those in the room to help spread the word about what the charity is all about and let their friends, families and communities know the free cancer support services that are available.
Several guests enjoyed some time in the charity’s stunning garden before touring the newly refurbished building with staff and volunteers.
Friday’s event was one of a number of collaborations between Network Ireland Kerry and Recovery Haven in 2024, which will culminate in a Christmas Lunch in Killarney in December. Scroll down for photos…
THE 2024 Dingle Food Festival has been launched with a wonderful line-up of events and a special emphasis this year on zero waste policy.
The festival is continuing on its mission to be the first Irish “Zero Landfill Waste” festival. Taking place from Friday 4th to Sunday the 6th of October, the festival is expected to attract over 10,000 visitors with 150,000 food tastings on offer.
Once again this year, all festival goers are being encouraged to bring their own bowl. For those who don’t, there will be stainless steel bowls available to rent for two euro (with five euro deposit).
Continued below…
There will also be festival packs on sale consisting of a bamboo bowl and cutlery set. Taste trail and market outlets will only be serving food onto reusable tableware, with the main aim being to reduce the amount of disposable packaging over the weekend.
Speaking at today’s launch, festival Chairperson Martin Bealin was highlighting the amount of waste festivals generate and the sustainable practices that the Dingle Food Festival are implementing to reduce this. “There will be approximately 150,000 tastings happening over the weekend, so getting rid of the disposable packaging will make a huge impact… it’s a big challenge for the Dingle Food Festival community but one we know will be embraced” he said.
Other sustainable practices over the weekend will be HVO Generators; printed material moving online, with a smaller festival programme being printed; green transport – working with Bus Éireann and The Local Link, providing more bus options to and from the peninsula over the weekend and sustainable practices workshops.
Highlights of this year’s festival include the much loved Taste Trail, where festival goers purchase a book of taste tickets and get to sample food delights throughout the picturesque town.
Numerous Food Masterclasses and workshops will be taking place including Pitmaster Barbeqing from Smokin Soul, Seafood Curing and Smoking with Burren Smokehouse, Sourdough Making, Cake Baking and Wine Tasting and much much more.
Tickets for all masterclass and workshops can be purchased from dinglefood.com where full the line up and event details are also listed.
Together with the Blas na hEireann Irish Food Awards, market stalls, street entertainment, live music and kids activities, there really is something for everyone! Check out www.dinglefood.com
