SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-13; Kerins O’Rahillys 0-12.

This round 2 Club Championship game played in Connolly Park on last Sunday afternoon (12th Sept) was a typical old-style Town Derby with both sides playing to the edge and Donal Casey, the experienced referee that he is, issuing many yellow cards to both sides but stopping at that.

It was nip and tuck right up to the 51st minute with no more than two points separating the sides at any stage.

We were behind by a point at the end of the first quarter (0-4 to 0-3) with Brendan O’Sullivan opening our account from play in the second minute after Strand Road set the ball rolling after just 15 seconds. Our other two points came from frees by Shane O’Callaghan.

We then dominated the second quarter scoring three points to one to leave us ahead at half time by 0-6 to 0-5) – all our three coming on this occasion from play by Shane O’Callaghan, Seán Quilter and Brendan O’Sullivan.

Rahillys then took charge of the third quarter outscoring us by five to two to go in at the second water-break leading by two points (0-10 to 0-8). Our two points again came from play with Michael O’Donnell and Conor Jordan on target.

But we took complete control in the final quarter adding a further goal and five points while holding the opposition to just two late points.

Second half substitute Darragh O’Brien was the master of ceremonies during this period, scoring a goal and three points – two of the points coming from frees and the goal coming from a well-taken penalty.

Our other two points came from Shane O’Callaghan – his fourth of the afternoon – and the final score coming for our full-back and team captain, Dylan Casey who deservedly got the Celsius Menswear Man of the Match Award thereafter..

Team: Robbie Murphy, Colin Griffin, Dylan Casey (Capt) (0-1), Jack O’Shea, Paul O’Sullivan, Ronan Shanahan, Conor Jordan (0-1), Joseph O’Connor, Michael O’Gara, Fiachna Mangan, Shane O’Callagahan (0-4 – two frees), Armin Heinrich, Seán Quilter (0-1), Kieran Donaghy, Brendan O’Sullivan (0-2).

Subs used: Greg Horan (36m), Michael O’Donnell (36m) (0-1), Darragh O’Brien (46m) (1-3 – one penalty goal and two frees), Adam Curran (46m), Barry Shanahan (57m).

We now have a trip to Dingle on the weekend after next (Sunday 26th Sept at 2.30pm) to play the home side in the 3rd and final round.

With both sides already through to the next round after their two wins in the opening rounds the result of this third round game will just determine who tops the group. There will then be two semi finals (Winner Group 1.v 2nd placed Group 2; Winner Group 2 .v. 2nd placed Group 1) and a Club Championship Final on a date to be finalised.

MINOR FOOTBALL (Under 17): Twelve teams divided in to three groups of 4 will contest this season’s MF Co. Championship. Group 1 comprises Laune Rangers, Mid Kerry, North Kerry and South Kerry. We are in Group 2 together with Dr. Crokes, St. Kierans and West Kerry. Then in Group 3 we have East Kerry, Glenflesk, Kenmare District and St. Brendans. So a tough assignment for the four Clubs (ourselves, Crokes, Glenflesk and Laune Rangers) against eight very strong Divisional teams.

Round 1 gets underway next Saturday (18th Sept) with a home game for us against St. Kierans commencing at 4pm. In round 2 on the following weekend we are away to Dr. Crokes.

The draw has also been made for the Tralee/St. Brendans Championship. We play Ballymac and Ardfert play Kerins O’Rahillys in the semi finals. No dates have yet been fixed for the games.

COINCIDENCE: To our knowledge it has never happened before in the 134 years of the All Ireland SF Final where the score was exactly the same in two consecutive years. Last Saturday’s score in the Tyrone/Mayo game (2-14 to 0-15) was exactly the same as the score in the 2020 Final between Dublin and Mayo (2-14 to 0-15).

SEPTEMBER IN THE PAST (08/09 to 14/09). On the field of play we go back over ninety years – to the 14th Sept. 1930, the day our Senior Footballers won their 2nd Co. Championship title, defeating Stand Street by 4-4 to 2-5.

Team: Pat Mullins Curtin, Jimmy Kelter, Joe Barrett (Capt), Mick Healy, Tommy Barrett, Dan Ryan, Tom Cashell, Denis Rory O’Connell (1-0), Miko Doyle (0-1), Jimmy Barrett, John Joe Purty Landers (0-1), Eddie Barrett (2-1), Martin Bracker O’Regan (1-1), Archie Reidy, James Baily

Subs:Tim Roundy Landers, Dominick Daly, Tim Crean, Tadgh Drummond, Bobby Rucky Kelly.

Also on the field of play (on the 8th Sept. 1996) William Kirby won the 2nd of his All Ireland U21 medals with Kerry when they defeated Cavan (1-17 to 2-10) on a fine summer’s day in Semple Stadium. William, along with Mikey Sheehy (1973 and 1975) are the only Club players to have won two All Ireland U21 medals. For the record seven other Club players have won an U21 medal each – Henry McKinney and the recently deceased, Jo Jo Barrett in 1964 – the first year the competition was staged; then Ger O’Keeffe and Ger Power in 1973; Pa Laide in 1990, Kenneth Leen in 1998 and Graham O’Connell in 2008.

One of the great players of Club and County, Jimmy Gawksie Gorman, went to his eternal reward during this week in 1998 (11th Sept.). Born in the Street of Champions (Urban Terrace) he was part of the great Rock teams of the 1930s, winning his first Co. Championship double – the football and hurling titles in 1931. He then won two more football medals in 1932 and 1936. Three years later he had success with the Kerry SF team – winning three All Ireland medals in successive years – 1939, 1940 and 1941.
