Kerry County Council Prepares For 1916 Commemorations Events

The Roger Casement Memorial in Banna.

KERRY County Council’s Commemorations Office has details of plans for several commemorations around the county including Valentia Island, from where the telegram was sent to US to alert Clan na Gael to the outbreak of the Rising; at Ballykissane near Killorglin, where three Volunteers drowned on their way to seize wireless radio equipment; and at Banna Strand, where Roger Casement, Robert Monteith and Daniel Bailey came ashore on Good Friday, 1916.

A commemorative stone will be unveiled at Valentia Island on April 17 at 3pm; there will be a ceremony at Ballykissane Pier on April 21 at 8am; and there will be a State Commemoration at Banna Strand on April 21 at noon with the President of Ireland in attendance.

The Kerry 2016 Office is inviting members of the public to participate in those commemorations and celebrate Kerry’s often understated role in the events of a century ago.

President Higgins will also officially open ‘Casement in Kerry: A Revolutionary Journey’ at the Kerry Museum in Tralee on April 21 at 4pm. The exhibition will take visitors on a series of revolutionary journeys: Roger Casement’s path from servant of the Crown to Irish nationalist that led to the gallows in Pentonville Prison; the road to independence for Ireland with the first stepping stone of the Easter Rising; and the experience of the Kerry people whose lives were transformed by the events of 1916.

The commemorations at Valentia, Ballykissane and Banna are all part of an extensive programme of events which run throughout the year in Kerry and which have already seen Kerry communities embrace the centenary and organise their own events. Among those are events to honour the four Kerry men who died in Dublin – The O’Rahilly (Ballylongford), Patrick Shortis (Ballybunion), Patrick O’Connor (Rathmore), and Michael Mulvihill (Ballyduff).

On Saturday, April 30, there will be the unveiling of a plaque in Lispole to Thomas Ashe, who led Volunteers at the so-called Battle of Ashbourne in County Meath and was the last commander to surrender. Also that day, there will be also be a series of events in Ballylongford to honour local man, The O’Rahilly, who was a key figure in the foundation of the Volunteers and who died on Moore Street on April 29, 1916.

“Kerry was central to the preparations for the Rising with Tralee man Austin Stack charged with organising the landing of arms at Fenit at Easter 1916. Key figures like the O’Rahilly (Ballylongford), Fionán Lynch (Waterville), An Seabhac (Dingle), Thomas Ashe (Lispole), and Piaras Béaslaí were key figures in these historic events,” said Kate Kennelly, Kerry 2016 Co-ordinator.

“There were also key incidents like the drowning of Con Keating, Dan Sheehan and Charlie Monahan at Ballykissane Pier on Good Friday and the failed attempt to land the arms shipment from Germany which contributed to Eoin MacNeill’s decision to issue the countermanding order on Easter Saturday.”

“The iconic arrival of Casement at Banna in the early hours of Good Friday and his subsequent arrest are also pivotal events and that is why a complete State Commemoration, attended by President Michael D Higgins will take place on April 21 at Banna Strand, the exact centenary of events,” said Kate Kennelly.

Austin Stacks CrestCLUB MEMBERSHIP:

The official closing date for the payment of membership 2016 is on this Thursday (31st March). A final registration night will be held in the club bar on this Thursday night from 8 to 9 o clock to facilitate anyone wishing to pay their membership. Anyone who hasn’t paid their membership by this date will forfeit the opportunity to be included in the list for All Ireland tickets should that arise later in the year.

 2017 COMMEMORATION:

Next year the Club will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of its foundation. For that purpose it is examining the feasibility of publishing a History of the Club and we would love to receive any memorabilia, photographs or any other material that people may have of former players etc. All material will, of course, be returned to their owners after being processed.

DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING:

Tim Murphy, Development Officer of the Kerry Co. Board’s Planning & Development Committee, informs us that a Defibrillator Training Session will take place in Austin Stack Park on next Tuesday (5th April) commencing at 6.45pm sharp and concluding at 9.10pm. Anyone interested in participating should email  tomasstack@gmail.com immediately as numbers for this session are limited to 24. So it’s ‘first come, first served’.

SENIOR FOOTBALL:

Austin Stacks 1-10; Glenbeigh/Glencar 1-7.

With both sides pointless are their first round encounters the previous weekend, this round two game of the Co. League, played at a damp and breezy Connolly Park on Easter Saturday evening (26th March), was bound to be keenly contested. And that’s the way it turned out. After a cautious first half both sides went in at half time on level terms (0-4 each). David Mannix with three (two frees) and a lovely effort from play by David O’Sullivan were our scorers.

Seven minutes into the second half  we went back in the lead with three unanswered points, David Mannix was again on target with two frees and one from play by Shane O’Callaghan. But in the space of a minute the visitors were back in the lead with a point and a well-taken goal.

With both defences dominating, fifteen minutes elapsed before the next scores came – two more David Mannix points (one from a free). And when the visitors equalized , with two minutes of normal time remaining, it looked as if the spoils might be shared.

But a sweeping move by our lads, started by full back, Fearghal MacNamara, eventually ended in the square and Fearghal was again on hand to dispossess the defender and wing back, Jack O’Shea, pounced on the breaking ball to volley to the net for his first goal at Senior level which restored our three points lead.
In added time both sides had a point each – ours coming  from Shane O’Callaghan after good work by Colin Griffin, before referee, Donal Casey, blew the final whistle.

Team: Darragh O’Brien, Barry Walsh, Fearghal MacNamara, Colin Griffin, Pa McCarthy, Conor Jordan,  Jack O’Shea (1-0), Barry Shanahan, Shane Guthrie, Shane Carroll, Michael O’Donnell, Seán Ryan, David Mannix (0-7 – 5 frees), Shane O’Callaghan (0-2), David O’Sullivan (0-1).
Subs used: Ciarán O’Connell (21m), Brían Mangan (43m), Shane Crowley (57m).

Our next Co. League outing will be another home game, this time against newly-promoted Kenmare, in round 3. The game is fixed for the week-end after next (9th/10th April).

B FOOTBALL:

As we write no new date has been fixed for our game against Ballylongford which was postponed from last week. In round 3 our Bs also have a home game against Rathmore on the weekend after next.

MINOR FOOTBALL:

Austin Stacks 1-9; Kerins O’Rahillys 0-10.

On this historic Easter weekend a little bit of history was also made in James Connolly Park on last Saturday afternoon (26th March) when our Minors were the first team to play a competitive game in our brand newly developed pitch, colloquially known as ‘The Nuns Field’. And they marked the occasion with a good, if hard-fought, win in round 4 (of 5) of the Co. League.

The pitch was immaculate but the weather not so good. As a result scores were hard to come by early on with both sides scoring three points each in the first 24 minutes – all ours coming from placed balls – the opener from a well-taken 45 by Donagh McKivergan and two frees by Ferdia O’Brien.

Two of the Rahillys points came from frees also. In the closing three minutes of the half Ferdia added three more (two from frees) with good work from midfielders, Philip Quilter and David Fitzmaurice and great support play from Fergal Ryan, Cian Liston, Michael Linnane and Harry O’Callaghan.. This left us ahead by 0-6 to 0-3 at half time.

At the end of the third quarter Rahillys had reduced our lead to the bare minimum (0-8 to 0-7) with Ferdia (free) and Donagh again on target for us. Then in the 46th minute we were awarded a penalty and Ferdia sent the keeper the wrong way, steered the ball low into the far corner of the net. However the visitors kept on pressing and in the final quarter added a further three points to leave the minimum between the sides as the game entered the final minutes.

However, great defending by our lads ended in one last attack and Fergal Ryan, who has a splendid game all through, was at the end of a great move to put over the final score of the game for a well-deserved two points win. A win which now leaves us on top of the League table with six points (three wins out of four), along with Dr. Crokes who will be our opponents in the 5th and final game of the League.

This game, which was to take place next Friday, has been postponed to a later date due to the Colleges Final on next Saturday (see below). Corner back, Shane Kelliher, took a hard accidental knock, half way through the first half, and had to be replaced. We wish Shane a full and speedy recovery.

Team: Robbie Murphy, Shane Kelliher, Dylan Casey, Brandon Patterson (Capt), Shane Walsh, Ciarán O’Reilly, Odhran Liston, Philip Quilter, David Fitzmaurice, Donagh McKivergan (0-2 – one 45), Fergal Ryan (0-1), Michael Linnane, Cian Liston, Ferdia O’Brien (1-6 – penalty goal; five frees), Harry O’Callaghan.
Subs used: Tomás Sheehy (15m), Gearóid Fitzgerald (58m).

GOOD LUCK:

To St. Brendan’s College (Killarney) when they play St. Patrick’s College (Maghera) in next Saturday’s (2nd April) Colleges A Final in Croke Park for the Hogan Cup. The game will be preceded by the B final between Ferbane (Offaly) and Mountbellew (Galway) for the Paddy Drummond Cup – named after the late Paddy Drummond (1912-1995) who was a Stacks hurler, footballer, mentor of many teams and Club Official, including Club Chairman (1948; 1955-1956). Paddy was a grand uncle of current Club Secretary, Elma Nix, and Juvenile Chairman, Tim McMahon.

NEW SCOREBOARD:

Also on last Saturday our new Electronic Scoreboard came into play and long-serving Club Member/Official, Paudie Commane, had the pleasant task of operating it for the first time (future Quiz Buffs please note). The first scores he registered were points by Glenbeigh/Glencar’s Gavan O’Grady, with our own David Mannix coming next. The first goals to be registered came from Tommy Cahill (Glenbeigh) and then by our own Jack O’Shea late in the game.

THANKS:

To all those unsung heroes who worked so hard to get our two pitches  ready for last Saturday’s games after the heavy rain the previous night, especially Denis O’Connor, Noel O’Connell and Club Chairman, Liam Lynch who were there from early morning and even managed to have our new scoreboard ready for that evening. Well done lads and to everyone else who lent a hand.

CLUBHOUSE:

As always the Clubhouse is available for all types of Parties. For Bookings phone Des Griffin at 086 402 0808.

Mark Gazi with his brother Danny after winning the U10’s 2016 Carrigaline Junior Tennis Open

TWO juniors from Tralee Tennis Club have recently made themselves and their club very proud after they both came away victorious from various Munster Competitions held over the last two weekends.

Peter Walsh was the winner of the U14 Plate at the 2016 Junior South of Ireland Tennis Championships, which took place at Limerick Lawn Tennis Club, on March 20, while Mark Gazi won the U10’s category of the same competition and also successfully defended his U10 title at the Carrigaline Junior Tennis Open in Carrigaline, Cork on Easter Monday, March 28.

Both competitions were very competitive but the boys managed to show skill and composure to battle through. They have put a lot of work in by practising on the court with coaches and parents and the hard work has paid off as they are delighted with their wins and to show off their trophies to their friends and families.

FAOI 16

Ballymacelligott U 16’s played St. Pats Blennerville in Blennerville on Easter Monday evening. The underfoot conditions were very trying and it was a credit to both teams the way they adopted to play some excellent open football.

St. Pats started the game very strongly tagging on a few early scores, but Ballymacelligott gradually worked their way back into the game to lead at halftime on a score line of 2 -7  to St. Pats 0-5.

The second half started in the same way with St. Pats on top but the hard work of all the Ballymac backs limited their scoring opportunities. As the half wore on Ballymac again took over and scored some excellent scores late on, to leave the final score St. Pats 1- 10 Ballymacelligott 4- 11.

This was a very good team performance with 8 different scorers and all 21 players contributing to the win.
Team, Darragh Lynch, Eoin Culloty, Tadhg Brick, Kevin Lenihan, Liam O’Brien, Daire O Connor Chawke, Diarmuid Lynch,  Joshua O’Keeffe, James Carmody, Barry Lyons, David Rogers, James Carmody, Dylan McHuge, Cillian Gallagher, Daire Keane, Aidan O’Brien, Dylan Dunne Moriarty, Alusin Jah, Cian Godley, Jonathan Lowe, Brian Cassidy.

This will be the 27th Census to have taken place in Ireland, with the last Census taking place on April 11, 2011, revealing the population of Ireland on that night to be 4,588,252 persons. The first results will be published about twelve weeks after the Census night.

One wonders will there be much difference from that previous census in 2011. Here’s a reminder of  the results that threw up:

AGE/SEX

• In April 2011 Kerry had a population of 145,502, consisting of 72,629 males and
72,873 females.

• The population of pre-school age (0-4) was 10,025, of primary school going age (5-
12) was 15,326 and of secondary school going age (13-18) was 11,177.

• There were 20,988 persons aged 65 years and over. The number of persons aged 18
years or over was 110,562.
MARITAL STATUS
• Of the 116,150 persons aged 15 years and over, 44,862 were single, 57,914 were
married, 3,377 were separated, 2,866 were divorced and 7,131 were widowed.
LIVING ARRANGEMENTS
• There were 53,306 private households in Kerry in April 2011, of which 14,038  were
single person households. Of the 37,248 families in the area, 11,153 were couples
with no children. The average number of children per family was 1.4 compared with
1.4 nationally.
MIGRATION AND NATIONALITIES
• 94.4 per cent of the usually resident population aged over 1 lived at the same
address one year before the census.
• A further 3.6 per cent lived elsewhere in the same county, 1.1 per cent lived elsewhere in the State while 0.9 per cent lived outside the State twelve months before the census on April 10, 2011.
• Non-Irish nationals accounted for 11.2 per cent of the population of Kerry compared
with a national average figure of 12.0 per cent. UK nationals (5,191 persons) were
the largest group, followed by Polish (4,048 persons).
LANGUAGES
• 64,105 persons could speak the Irish language and of these 21,792 spoke the
language daily. 13,109 persons spoke a language other than Irish or English at
home and of these 2,507 could not speak English well or at all. Polish was the most
common foreign language spoken at home with 3,942 speakers.
RELIGION
• There were 127,637 Roman Catholics in the area at census time. A further 9,075
were adherents of other stated religions (e.g. Church of Ireland, Islam, Presbyterian,
Orthodox), while 6,884 persons indicated that they had no religion.

For those whose first language is not Irish or English, a translation of the census form is available in 21 different foreign languages.

Other resources which are available to assist people with filling out the census form include large print, Braille and audio versions of the census form and a video step-by-step guide to completing the census form.

All of these resources and much more information about the census are available on the census website at www.census.ie.

BANK of Ireland together with Startups.ie are calling on Kerry startups to enter the 2016 Bank of Ireland Startup Awards competition as the deadline of March 31 quickly approaches.

The awards recognise and reward Irish startups for their success in business across 12 categories including digital, food and drink, retail and technology.

Last November, an Ardfert man’s company won a Gold Award at the ceremony in Dublin. Martin McGowan’s business, Ullcatch, won the Product Start-Up Of The Year category, mainly due to his product, the Bait Weaver.

Martin McGowan (centre) of Ullcatch is joined by Steven Buckley (left) and David Brophy of sponsors FR Kelly (right) at last November’s awards.

The competition is open to companies and organisations across all sectors as awareness for the Startup Awards continues to grow annually, with almost 650 entries received in 2015. Urging startups to get entering, Bank of Ireland together with Startups.ie shared the following five Top Tips:

1. Tell a story within your entry; get the emotion behind your startup journey across to the judges. Show us your passion.

2. Remember the audience; the judges will not have all of the technical knowledge and skills that you do.  Don’t assume that the judges know everything about your business.

3. Bring your story to life; the judge will have a lot of entries to go through.

4. Plot the story carefully; Remember to include a beginning middle and end to your entry, if you refer to goals or targets at the beginning; don’t forget to refer to what actually happened.

5. Proof read, proof read and then proof read again. Also watch the typos, they count.

Companies can enter the awards on their own behalf or can be nominated by a friend or colleague. Entries are judged in their respective region, which includes Dublin, the rest of Leinster, Munster and Connacht/Ulster.

Regional finalists are then shortlisted for the national final which takes place in Dublin in May. The competition is open to both Bank of Ireland customers and non-Bank of Ireland customers and the regional finals will take place during April with the national gala final taking place in Dublin on Thursday, May 26, 2016.

To enter or nominate someone for a Startup Award visit: www.startupawards.ie.. Entry into the awards is free and is open to sole traders, partnerships and companies that have been set up in Ireland that are in business for three years or less with up to 30 employees.  The awards judging committee will comprise representatives from Bank of Ireland, Startups Ireland and leading Irish entrepreneurs.

Further information on the awards is also be available via the Bank of Ireland Twitter account @BOIbusiness and a dedicated hashtag has been created for the event #boistartupawards.

THE ‘Coiste Comóradh 1916 Trá Lí’ committee are hosting a fundraising quiz in Na Gaeil Clubhouse on Thursday, March 24, at 9pm.

It’s to raise funds as plans are now at an advanced stage for the Easter Commemoration events, due to take place in Tralee from April 22 – 24.

There will be a host of events taking place over the weekend in April including a choral recital in the Square on Friday, April 22, and on Saturday, April 23, the Square will be awash with old time activities including stalls, machinery, vehicles, Irish music and dancing.

It will also feature a sketch by Na Gaeil Scór na nÓg competitors. On Sunday, April 24, a number of bands will attend a grand parade featuring units of people marching as Irish Volunteers, Cumann na mBan and Fianna.

Several relatives of those who died in the Rising have contacted the organising committee indicating their intention to attend.

On Sunday,  the parade will assemble at the Rink, Basin Road, at 12.45pm where a bugle will sound the assembly as happened outside Liberty Hall in 1916.

After a brief ceremony, the parade will then March to O’Rahilly Villas on Strand Street and then to the Cahill Memorial in Cahill’s Park. After wreath laying ceremonies it will then proceed to Páirc an Phiarsaigh.

Here the attendants will be addressed and wreaths will be laid at the Pearse monument. The last post will be sounded, and the ceremonies will conclude with the singing of Amhrán na Bhfiann.

The general public are encouraged to take part in the parade on the Sunday and if you would like to support the efforts made by the committee, you can attend the fundraising quiz in Na Gaeil with a table of four costing €30.

TRALEE Library is currently hosting a 1916 Commemorative exhibition titled, ‘Kerry 1916 from the Archives’, which was officially opened by Cllr. Jim Finucane, Leas Cathaoirleach, Kerry County Council, on Tuesday, March 22, and will run until Saturday, April 30.

The exhibition comprises extracts from the Kerry Library newspaper collection including The Kerryman, the Kerry Evening Post, the Kerry Weekly Reporter and the Kerry Sentinel as well as material from various 1916 related archives that the library holds.

Sixteen information panels detail the major events that happened in Kerry including the Casement landing, the Firies shootings and the Ballykissane Pier incident while there are also a number of original documents on display for the first time, relating to a prison correspondence as well as excerpts from the archives of Dr. John O’Connell, the then County Coroner.

The exhibition is enhanced by a visual presentation of photographs and images from the Kerry Library collections as well as some 1916 related memorabilia donated by members of the public.

All the major Kerry personnel involved in the Rising are remembered including Tomás Ághas, Fionán Lynch and Roger Casement. Another interesting feature of the exhibition is the map showing places of interest in Tralee’ associated with the Rising and some details of Tralee Cumann na mBan (which was compiled by the Mitchell’s Heritage Group).

The archivist at Kerry Library, Michael Lynch, considers it is a good starting point for people to learn more about the 1916 Rising in Kerry, saying: “it will give a sense of the different events and people who were involved in the Rising in Kerry while also giving an opportunity to view some of the rare material that the Kerry Library research collections hold”.

The Grade 5 Men’s Team after their victory in the Munster Branch Winter League; Ray Moroney, Shane O’Sullivan, John Finnegan and Stephen Roche.

TWO teams from Tralee Tennis Club have been crowned Munster Champions after a long Winter League campaign ended in victory at the finals, which took place in Sundays Well Tennis Club, Cork, on Sunday, March 20.

The Grade 5 Men’s team consisted of Ray Moroney, Stephen Roche, John Finnegan and Shane O’Sullivan and they had a total of nine matches in the competition. The team has played against clubs from Clare, Limerick and Cork, before winning the final 4-0 against Monkstown of Cork.

The Grade 6 Men’s team consisted of Gerry Jeewoonarain, Shane Roche, Chris Sun and Des Healy and they also had long run in the competition, playing six games in total.

Their final, against Catholic Institute of Limerick, proved to be much different than the 5’s as after a 2-2 draw, it came down to a sudden death of one set, where the team had to battle from 4-0 down to win 7-5  and take the title home with a score of 3-2.

The teams have worked hard since the competition started back in November, and despite a long day starting at 8am, they enjoyed a day great out with the supporters who travelled to the match.

Churchill GAA Club News

Churchill St Patricks Day Parade

Churchill GAA club at the start of the St Patrick’s Day Parade.

Juveniles.

The U6, U8 and U10 Academy had another huge turnout last weekend with over 50 players in attendance. Even at this early stage they are really showing great skill and enthusiasm for the game. U6 and U8 Training continues this Sunday ay 11AM in the Spa. Please note that there is no U10 training this week.

We would like to thank all the players, mentors and parents that lined out for Churchill in the St Patrick’s Day parade in Tralee last week. There was a great crowd and everyone made a fantastic effort in dressing in the black and green, with great singing and cheering along the route.

Minors

The Churchill Minor team recorded a deserved victory over Moyvane/Tarbert by 3-15 to 2-08 on Friday evening in Churchill. This opens the league right up with Churchill in second place, although we have played a game more than some of the other teams. Churchill’s final game is fixed for Friday 1st April at home to John Mitchels and victory is vital if we are to progress to the knockout stage.

Seniors

A very youthful Churchill team began the Co League campaign in perfect conditions away to Firies on Sunday afternoon. Churchill had a great start and after 5 min led 1-01 to 0-01, the goal coming from Ivan Parker after a great pass from Mikey Brennan. Firies then scored 4 points on the trot before winning a penalty, which was brilliantly saved by Kerry U21 keeper Eoghan O’Brien.

This spurred Churchill on, kicking 4 points to Firies’ 2 before the break, the pick of them an Oisin O’Brien pt after a great run from defence by JJ Prior. This left it all square at half time, 1-05 to 0-08. Early in the second half, a Cluxton-like long range free from Eoghan O’Brien cancelled an early Firies point.

Both teams were showing great composure in front of goal and approaching the end of the third quarter the teams were still tied at 1-09 to 12 pts. Firies scored a point and then, from a misdirected free from the left, the ball was deflected into the net for a 4 point lead. To their credit, Churchill responded well with points from Neil Collins O’Brien and Parker, but as they committed more men to attack, Firies struck for their second goal.

Again Churchill rallied and Mikey Brennan won a penalty, which was coolly dispatched by Ivan Parker. However time was running out and this was to be the last score of the game, Firies clinching victory by 2-14 to 2-11. There were many positives to be taken from this youthful Churchill display, but a lot of hard work required before the next fixture, at home to Ballymac in 2 weeks time.

Churchill team and scorers:

Eoghan O’Brien (0-01), Mitchell Holland, Shane Crowley, Karl Sheehy, Cathal Rogers, PJ O’Mahony, JJ Prior, Ciaran Crowley, Matt Finnerty, Neill Collins O’Brien(0-01), Mike Brennan (0-01), Fiachra Griffin, Oisin O’Brien (0-03), Ivan Parker (2-05), Mike O’Brien. REPORTS;

(Youths) FAI Youth Cup 1/4 Final;

Park Fc 0-4 Galway Hibernians,

The youths great adventure in this seasons FAI Youth Cup ended on Saturday against Galway Hibernians. Although on the day, the team never got the chance to show the quality of football they can play, they should be very proud of their achievements in reaching the last eight of a national competition.

Galway Hibernians started much the better and Park Keeper Maciek Morawski was quickly off his line to deny Hibernians from taking the lead. Midway through the half Hibernians took the lead when they intercepted a ball as the Park tried to play from the back to give them a derived lead. Ten Minutes later it was two nil when the away side punished the Park for not clearing their lines from a corner.

Park brought on John O’Brien at half time to try give them more of a scoring in an effort to get back into the game but he never really got the service to create any chances. Sadly for the home side Hibernians scored twice more in the final twenty five minutes to secure their place in the last four. The Park will now look towards local competitions where they are in the league semi-finals and also in the quarter final of the Jimmy Falvey Memorial Youth Cup.

St. Brendan’s Park FC starting eleven; Maciek Morawski, Seán Tansley, Shane McGinley, Gavin Wadding, Segun Duyile, Nathan O’Leary, Emmanuel Abubakar, Eamon Sheehy, Donagh O’Brien, Thomas Leen, Darcy O’Sullivan.

(U13) Division 1 ;

Park B 1-1 Mastergeeha Fc ,

It was a calm morning for the league meeting between Park under 13 B and Mastergeeha. The game got under way at 10.30. Both teams attacked and defended well and possession was 50/50. Twenty minutes in, confusion in the Park area saw a mix up between the keeper and a defending midfielder which caused the ball to go in off the midfielder making it 0-1 at half time.

After a team talk at half time Park came out with a more positive and attacking attitude. After 14 minutes a free from outside the area which was well delivered saw Evan Foley put the ball in the net to level the score. After that Park played some good football especially down the left side with good link up play between Gavin Parker and Danny Fisher. Adam Sheehy and keeper Hugh Emmerson played very well. Final score 1-1. Park must now win their one remaining game against Killorglin to be sure of topping the league.

Kerry schoolboys and girls soccer league team of the week ;

Well done to Airmin Heinrich St Brendans Park Fc U13’s who made the Kerry schoolboys and girls soccer league team of the week.

Austin Stacks CrestCLUB MEMBERSHIP:

Membership 2016 is now due. A registration night will be held in the club bar on this Wednesday night (23rd March) from 8 to 9 o clock to facilitate anyone wishing to pay their membership. Closing date for membership is next Thursday week (31st March) and anyone who hasn’t paid their membership by that date will forfeit the opportunity to be included in the list for All Ireland tickets should that arise later in the year.

 2017 COMMEMERATION:

Next year the Club will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of its foundation. For that purpose it is examining the feasibility of publishing a History of the Club and we would love to receive any memorabilia, photographs or any other material that people may have of former players etc. All material will, of course, be returned to their owners after being processed.

SENIOR FOOTBALL:

Dr. Crokes 3-15; Austin Stacks 3-9.

We  have encountered it before – Crokes getting a head start and then we chasing the game thereafter. And that’s exactly what happened in Lewis Road on yesterday afternoon (20th March) in a game which doubled as the 2015 Co. League Final and round 1 of this season’s League.

Played in glorious summer-like sunshine and without a puff of a breeze the home side had built up a six points lead (1-3) in as many minutes. And at the end of the game that was still the margin between the two sides with Crokes winning their 7th League title in the 45th playing of the competition.

We settled somewhat after that poor start with two quick points in the space of a minute from Seán Ryan and Greg Horan. But then the home side went further ahead with three unanswered points to leave them leading by 1-6 to 0-2 after 20 minutes. Two minutes later a nice move involving Kieran Donaghy and Shane O’Callaghan saw Daniel Bohan put over. Then in the 23rd minute a long ball in by Wayne Guthrie was tapped across goal by Star  into the path of Seán Ryan who took his goal beautifully.

But Crokes finished the half the stronger scoring a further 1-3 to just two more points for us (from Star and Denis McElligott) to leave them seven clear at the break (2-9 to 1-5). Ten minutes into the second half they had increased that lead to eight after adding two more to our one (by half time substitute David Mannix). But in the space of two minutes we had almost wiped out that lead. First Kieran Donaghy put over.

And then a minute later Greg Horan floated in a high ball which was gathered by Michael O’Donnell.

Michael jinked his way through the Crokes defence with what looked like the whole Crokes team hanging off of him but his exquisite shot somehow found the net and if we witness a better goal anywhere for the rest of the season then it will have to be something special.

Then within a minute Wayne Guthrie put Shane O’Callaghan through for our 3rd goal of the game and now we trailed by the bare minimum.

In the 46th minute Crokes converted a 45 and that was still the position in the 51st minute when three red cards were issued after a fracas – two to Crokes and one for us. And again how many times have we seen it happen where the team with the man down will raise their game. and that’s exactly what Crokes did in the closing quarter when they out-scored us by 1-3 to 0-2 – our two coming from Conor Jordan and a David Mannix free.

We were unfortunate to lose the services of Daniel Bohan to an injury seven minutes into the second half and we were also unlucky not to convert at least one or two more goal opportunities during the course of the game.

Team: Barry Galvin, Barry Walsh, Fearghal MacNamara (Capt), Jack O’Shea, Pa McCarthy, Conor Jordan (0-1), Denis McElligott (0-1), Wayne Guthrie, Kieran Donaghy (0-2), Daniel Bohan (0-1), Michael O’Donnell (1-0), Seán Ryan (1-1), Alan Nestor, Shane O’Callaghan (1-0), Greg Horan (0-1).
Subs used: David Mannix (ht) (0-2 – one free); Colin Griffin (36m), Shane Carroll (37m), Shane Guthrie (55m), Barry Shanahan (62m).

Round 2 of the League is scheduled for next weekend (date not yet confirmed as we write, with Saturday evening looking likely) with a home game for us against Glenbeigh/Glencar.

B FOOTBALL:

Cordal 1-10; Austin Stacks 1-15.

A brilliant display by our B team, especially in the opening half, secured their first two points in this first round of the Co. League (Div 5) played at a dry, if breezy, Cordal on last Saturday afternoon (19th March).
In the opening five minutes both sides had two points each on the board – both of ours coming from play – the first after just 24 seconds by Alan Duggan and our 2nd by Seamus Bastible after good work by Brían Mangan and Dale Counihan.

Between then and half time we were totally dominant – scoring a further 1-7 to three for the opposition. Most of our points came from some super long-ranged efforts after some brilliant build-up play.  Darragh Long, who was unerring from both play and frees, scored four of the seven (three from frees), with Dale Counihan, Seamus Bastible and Shane Crowley also on target from play

Our last score of the half came in the 22nd minute and what a score it was. From out near the sideline Darragh Long passed back to Alan Duggan. Alan’s high ball into the square had no right to be won by Andrew Morrissey, but win it he did, and provided the perfect pass to the onrushing team captain, Seamus Bastible who blasted to the net for a splendid goal.

The closing minutes of the half could have been game changers for the home side. But goalkeeper, Paddy Fitzgibbon, made two brilliant saves, the first in the 24th minute from a penalty and the second in the 30th minute from play when all present could see nothing but the net bulging. On the stroke of half time (33rd minute) Cordal had their 5th point, all from frees, to leave us seven points up at the break (1-9 to 0-5).

But inside the second minute of the restart the East Kerry boys got themselves right back in the game with an opportunist goal and half way through the half they had reduced the deficit to two points after putting over four more. Our only scores in this period came from two Darragh Long frees.

But in the closing quarter we upped the ante again scoring four points to just one more for the home side. Darragh Long, with two more frees, and two from play by Alan Duggan and Sean Dukes were our scorers.
Apart from the win it was great to see such a whole-hearted display with some brilliant fielding, notably from mid fielders William and Brían but also from Alan Duggan, Shane Crowley and Denis O’Neill. And the long-ranged scoring was a joy to watch.

So a great start to the season which will have pleased all Rockies, especially team mentors William Kirby, Richie Conway, Jonathan Magnier, John Dennis and Eoin Colgan. And it’s great to see two former players, Richie and Jonathan back again after an absence. It was also good to see Paul Barrett back again after missing season 2015.
Prior to the game there was a minute’s silence for Cordal’s long-serving Official and current Chairman, Tom Wrenn, who died during the past week.

Team: Patrick Fitzgibbon, Dylan Harnett, Denis O’Neill, Paul Galvin, Paul Barrett, Ciarán O’Connell, John Murphy, William Kirby, Brían Mangan, Shane Crowley (0-1), Alan Duggan (0-2), Seamus Bastible (1-2), Dale Counihan (0-1), Darragh Long (0-8 – 7 frees), Andrew Morrissey.

Subs used: Louis Ryle (ht). Seán Dukes (37m) (0-1), Eoin Colgan (55m), Seán Hurley (59m).
We understand that our round game, away to Ballylongford, will not go ahead as scheduled on this weekend. Check website for updates.

 MINOR FOOTBALL:

Our Minors resume Co. League duty on this Easter Saturday (26th March) with a home game against Kerins O’Rahillys in round 4. Throw in at 4pm.
Then on the following Friday (1st April) we welcome Dr. Crokes to Connolly Park for the 5th and final round and with summer time in play then the throw in will be 6.30.

WELL DONE:

to the Kerry U21 Footballers, including our own Greg Horan, who qualified for their 36th Munster Final with a good win over Limerick in last Wednesday’s (16th March) semi final. They will now play Cork in the Final in two weeks time (Thursday, 7th April) again at Austin Stack Park.

CONGRATULATIONS:

to Bryan Cooper on his fantastic win in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham last Friday. Bryan played with our U12s in 2004, along-side players like Fearghal MacNamara and Shane O’Callaghan from our current squad. Tralee Parnells CrestMarching with Tralee Parnells:

Some great photos on Parnells Blog and Facebook page of our members marching in the Tralee St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Thank you to all our families who participated and helped us to fly the flag for our club. It was great to see so many children volunteer from the onlookers to take the challenge and try their shooting against our Parnells goalies.

Parnells 1
Tralee Parnells GAA members taking part in the St Patrick’s Day parade.

At the reviewing stand we were delighted to see some of our elected representatives come down to take on our keeper. Not content with trying for goals, John Brassil TD, Norma Foley MCC and Graham Spring MCC lined the goals to take on all comers. For a photo of this blanket defense in action, see our club Facebook page.

We are not sure if this constituted a grand coalition or a strategic alliance, but those in Leinster House might take heed of the leadership example shown here by our Kerry public representatives.

Race Night:

Parnells main fundraiser for the year takes place on Saturday the 16th of April in the Fels Point / Rose of Tralee Hotel at 8.30pm. The club are looking for businesses to either Sponsor a race or place an ad in the race programme, contact us via mailto:secretary.traleeparnells.kerry@gaa.ie for details. To buy a horse, please contact any Parnells officer.

Kerry Hurlers:

Well done Kerry, another great boost for the small ball in the Kingdom. Fantastic scenes, as our county team produced the hurling shock of the season so far to claim their first victory over Offaly in 60 years at Birr in Division 1A. As some readers will know, Birr is home to a monument to the Kerry team that won the first hurling all Ireland there, so the omens were good.

Club Plan:

The final drafts are in progress for the remaining elements of our Parnells Strategic Club Plan. We hope to be able to make the completed plan document available to members in April

BASKETBALL COMMUNITY GAMES

Our U11 mixed Basketball team took part in the Kerry Community Games finals on Sunday last.  In the morning session in Duagh we were victorious in all our games against Rock St Caherslee, Ballydonoghue/Lisselton, Duagh/Lyre and St. Brendans Oakpark.

These victories qualified us for a semi final against Currow Currans in Castleisland in the afternoon where we played some superb basketball to qualify for the final against Castleisland.  Although the final was a low scoring affair spectators were kept on the edge of their seats throughout due to the closeness of the game.  With just 20 seconds remaining Castleisland led 7 – 5.

Our team attacked seeking an equaliser however, luck was not on our side and the homeside extended their lead on the break with seconds remaining.  While our boys and girls were disappointed they can hold their heads high as they did themselves and their Parish proud on the day.  Great credit must be given to coaches Mike Broderick and David Long and Community games co-ordinator Sheila O Rahilly for their time devoted to coaching and organising the team.

Panel: Aoibhinn Broderick, Orla O Connor, Ciara Palmer, Ellie Quirke, Roisin Rahilly, Evan Boyle, Niall Collins, Tom Long, David Lucid, Micheal Savage.

Kerry Badminton Association News

Badminton AssociationThe Knock out Cup competition for division 4 League teams took pride of place at the Killarney Sports Centre on Sunday last where 5 clubs battled hard for several hours to see who would come out on top and be acclaimed as the club of the day.

The Clubs who took part were Moyvane, Killarney, County Tralee, Listowel and Iveragh. With each club meeting each other on the Round Robin system this was a fiercely contested competition with the organisers amazed at how many games went the full distance of the 21-20 scoreline.

After so many thrilling encounters it was Tralee’s County Club that captured the main honours as they came out on top with a total of 17 games captured with the Iveragh Club of South Kerry in 2nd place on 13 points but well done to all 5 clubs for giving the onlookers such a feast of Badminton on the day.

Seniors

St Pats started their county league division 3 game against Beale in glorious sunshine in Blennerville. The match itself started off slowly with both teams sizing each other up but Beale turned up the heat but were unable to convert any of their scoring chances with Ian Mannix forcing a great save from St. Pats goal keeper, John Fitzgerald. St Pats stepped up a gear and the first point was registered by Kieran Hurley after 3 minutes.

Shortly after that, there was a fine movement by Willie Hurley who displaced his marker and fed the evergreen Liam Poff who pointed for the second point of the game. There was another point from a free for Kieran Hurley after Adrian Greaney was hurled to the ground. St Pats first real sight on goal payed dividends when Willie Hurley found the back of the net from close range.

Beale’s first point of the game came off the boots of Darragh Buckley who converted a free in the 11th minute. Kieran hurley again converted a free after being fouled by his marker, Neilus Mulvihill. It was great to see both players evenly matched in their contest for every ball that came their way. The last two points of the half went to Beale and both were from converted frees by Ger Gorman and James McMahon.

The second half started very much like the first half with another great save by “Fizzy” after fine footwork by Darragh Buckley. The resultant 45 metre kick resulted in the first point of the half being scored by Darragh Buckley after some sloppy defending by the back line of St. Pats.

The moment of magic of this half and arguably the game came when Brendan Poff carried the ball from well in his half to score a lovely curling point much to the delight of the home crowd. Another couple of points came from St Pat’s Gary Savage with one of them a fisted effort over the bar. There were a few incidents afterwards with the referee having to dish out a number of yellow cards to players from both sides of the team to instil discipline.

The introduction of Ian Blake to the game changed the course of the game with a number of good catches in midfield in favour of Beale. Ger Gorman converted a penalty in the 56th minute to level the match for the umpteenth time after a player was fouled and this was quickly followed by another point by the same player after the ball was picked off the ground to nudge Beale ahead for the first time in the match. St Pats threw everything they had and were rewarded when Paul McMahon carried and soloed the ball before fisting over the bar, reminiscent of Donnacha Walsh.
Full time scores were St. Pats 1-11 Beale 1-11

There will be no League match this weekend as some of our players will be involved in the SFC qualifier representing St. Brendan’s Board against Shannon Rangers this Friday,  March 25th at 7.30pm in Austin Stack Park.

A DOCUMENTARY, two years in the making, is set to be screened for one night only at Siamsa Tire, on Easter Saturday, March 26, and it will feature an exclusive interview with the men involved with the Marita Ann and what happened on the ship.

It is the sequel to the documentary, ‘Spa Fenit: A Journey Through Time’, and just like the first one, the sequel is packed with stories such as the fairy forts and the old Tawlaght graveyard, the wells in Fenit & Spa, the Port of Fenit Dockers, Leibheirr, the old Dance Hall at the pier gates, among others, and it features a bonus disc with a rambling house in Churchill forge by local artists young and old.

James McCarthy, director of the documentary, said: “We decided to make a sequel as we felt we had left a lot out of the original documentary through lack of space. We felt that we needed to give something back to the people of the parish that were so kind after our car accident in 2011 and what better way than to document the people and places of the Parish? We are blessed to live in such a beautiful location with so many activities and stories that we felt we had to document this for future generations to come.”

“While making the first documentary my wife, Catherine, said to me why not see if we can get the local men involved in the Marita Ann to tell their story as it’s a local story we never got around to it at the time. So when we decided to do a part two, she said it to me again she pointed out that the 1916 anniversary was approaching and what better time to tell the story than in 2016,” he continued.

The DVD also features an interview with crew members of the Marita Ann, the ship carrying ammunition destined for the IRA, which was intercepted by authorities in 1984. The crew tell the story of what happened on board during that fateful night.

Tickets can be bought from Siamsa Tire and copies of the DVD will be available to purchase on the night.

Tralee Native Set To Climb Eight Mountains For Charity This Year

Aherns Mokka ad 3
.
Sarah Guerin Ben Nevis
Sarah Guerin.

THERE is no mountain high enough for a thrill-seeking woman from Tralee, who plans on climbing an impressive eight mountains this year including Kilimanjaro in Africa.

Sarah Guerin is taking part in Concern Worldwide’s annual mountain challenge, ‘Climb4Concern’, which sees adventurers climb some of the highest mountains in Ireland and the UK while helping to raise funds for people living in extreme poverty.

She has already climbed the three highest peaks in the UK: Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis with Concern last year and will climb the highest peaks of every province in Ireland this year with her first trek starting in Co. Mayo next month.

“I took part in the UK mountain challenges for Climb4Concern last year and loved it so much I’ve decided to go all out and do all the challenges this year,” she said.

“The feeling when you get to the top is overwhelming and the strangers you meet at the start of your journey are your friends by the end of it. You feel united and that you have achieved something. It also feels good to be doing it for charity. When you are getting it tough on the steep parts, you think about all those people worse off than yourself and how you are helping them, it definitely pushes you along,” she continued.

Sarah and her eight friends are planning to climb Mweelrea near Westport, which is the highest mountain in Connacht, on April 16, and will then go on to climb The Three Glens in Co. Wicklow on May 21. She will stay at home for Carraauntoohil on July 9, before returning to the UK to climb the three highest peaks again.

She won’t stop there as she will then take on the gargantuan task of climbing the 5,895 metre (5.9km) high Kilimanjaro in Tanzania on October 22.

Sarah is encouraging people to sign up for Mweelrea to experience an ‘unforgettable weekend’ while raising funds along the way.

Over €200,000 has been raised by participants in Climb4Concern since the challenge began in 2011 with crucial funds going to help people living in extreme poverty or who have been affected by conflicts and natural disasters in counties like Syria, South Sudan, Chad, Haiti and Niger.

Anyone interested in taking part in Climb4Concern is advised to contact Siobhan O’Connor at 01417802 or at siobhan.oconnor@concern.net or to see what challenges are taking place, log on to showyouconcern.net.
