THE Ballymac 5K & 10K Run saw over 500 people complete the event on May 17 and despite the pouring rain, the atmosphere, positivity and Ballymac community spirit made it an enjoyable day out.

The event was in memory of Luke Silles who passed away after an accident in Fenit in May of last year and the Fenit RNLI was the chosen charity to benefit from the run.

“As Race Director, I am incredibly proud of what was achieved,” said organiser Michelle Greaney. “I wanted to achieve something big and meaningful with this event for The Silles family during a particulary tough week around which Luke’s 1st anniversary of his passing was approaching.”

Thanks to the support of the local community an incredible €11,700 was raised for Fenit RNLI.

“The feedback since the race has honestly been overwhelming — from the well-stewarded routes to the atmosphere, organisation and post-race refreshments,” said Michelle.

“A massive thank you to every runner, walker (special shout out to Maeve in Perth Australia for organising a walk and raising money towards this) volunteer, steward, sponsor and supporter who played a part in making the day so special. Events like this do not happen without the support of the local community.”

Special thanks were also expressed for main sponsors O’Riadas Bar and Restaurant and O’Sullivans Bathrooms.

Following on from the success of the event, the organisers have decided to make it an annual event in honour of Luke.
