On Saturday we saw the Irish Subbuteo roadshow move onto Wexford for round 4 of the open.
Venue: This was Subbuteo coming to rural Ireland as we headed deep into Wexford to St Molings community centre. To be fair the centre was in excellent condition, well maintained, with a large hall, kitchen and toilet facilities.
Attendance: We had 10 players for this tournament. Which considering the time of year and location, was an excellent turnout.
Format: We played a straight league competition of 9 matches each, playing each other once on 5 tables.
Personal: This was my 3rd tournament. Mixed feelings on this. A bit disappointed to get beaten 8 times but after that it was all positive. I scored my first comp goals (7 in total) and chalked up my first win. Without doubt my general play is improving and with more practice I have a certain level in my sights.
Outcome: The competition went pretty much to form with Kenny pipping Mark Farrell to first place. Well done to Gerry Harrington for making the big trip from Suffolk, Tommy who was making his debut and Daniel who is coming on in leaps and bounds. Ireland’s big youth prospect.
On Monday 28th November it was back to club business at The Klub Bar in Strand Road. For the first time we had 4 players as we welcomed Greg to the fold.
We played a format of 6 games in a 4 team league. Dave playing with Aston Villa just pipped Williams Arsenal to first place with Greg’s Manchester Utd and Cian’s Italy bringing up the final places. All the games were really close affairs and there isn’t a great deal between any of us.
Our next meeting will be at the Klub Bar towards the end of December. New members are more than welcome and you can get more information on our Facebook page: Subbuteo Table Football Munster.

*******************************************
Boxing accounts for more than half of all the medals Ireland have won across 29 Olympic games.
It is without question our most successful Olympic sport and the legendary champions our small country has produced, from Dan Donnelly, the first Irish Heavyweight Champ in 1815, to our newest European Champions in 2022, Lisa O Rourke and Niamh Fay, are a huge source of national pride for us all.
Yet for all our success, Irish boxing in recent years has revealed a darker side in terms of poor governance and lack of camaraderie, highlighted at the Tokyo Olympics with the resignation of Bernard Dunne, from his position as High Performance Unit Director.
Olympic gold medal winner Kellie Harrington described the complex political scenario in the IABA at the time as “a s**t show” that “needs to be sorted out because the only people missing out are the boxers.”
With admirable intention, to finally put an end to this damaging infighting, Minister for Sport, Jack Chambers sought to pressure the IABA to change its ways, to fall in line or to be penalised by funding cuts, eventually amounting to full funding cuts, if change was not implemented.
It was made clear to the people of Ireland that government plans were not going to affect the High Performance athletes, our current and future champions.
However, there can be no denying that the grassroots boxing clubs around the country are going to suffer from this fallout between the Minister and the IABA.
This cannot have anything but a knock on effect on the High Performance Unit in time as the next batch of HP athletes are expected to come from small local clubs such as our own here in Tralee.
As our own coach Pat O Shea says, if you don’t plant the seed, nothing can grow in the garden.
A good deal of funding may come to the IABA from government and Sport Ireland, but unfortunately not a lot of that trickles down into local clubs, who like ourselves, are obliged to constantly go into the community to raise funds to keep our doors open to the young people of the town.
We must fight relentlessly for every penny we can get.
In last week’s local papers, our neighbouring club Cashen Vale BC, Ballybunion, which has trained 14 national champions, admitted that they face an uncertain future in 2023 due to financial pressure.
Was this suffering of local community boxing clubs anticipated by the Minister?
Captain of the Irish Olympic Boxing team at the 2012 Olympics in London, Darren O Neill, commented, “essentially it is the sport and the boxers who are going to lose out.”
Clubs like ours have very little say in the politics of the IABA but will definitely be getting the short end of the stick if this conflict is not resolved.
Last Sunday, little local clubs from around the country did exercise their vote, we chose to fight, and we chose to change, a new board has been elected in the IABA.
The Minister can hopefully see this as a step towards change, give incoming president, Gerry O Mahoney, and the new board time to clean up the face of Irish boxing before cutting funding and potentially relegating our national boxing pride into old photos and history books.

The Countdown is on, just one week to go to Tralee Boxing Club Summer Camp!
Hope everyone is looking forward to a week of fun and games with the coaches and volunteers. Places are filling up fast, and no wonder, since boxing training gives our little champs confidence and helps focus them.
It also helps children sleep better, improves reaction time and memory. Not to mention, it is a great way to keep your children fit and healthy.
Boxing is one of the best ways to combat obesity in kids because it is an individual competitor sport and although we train as a team and encourage each other wholeheartedly, there is always a higher focus on improving each individual child unlike traditional team sports.
It may be a bit of a cliché nowadays, but boxing has always built character and confidence in kids. It helps the small people in our lives to find their inner strength, overcome obstacles, and become much more successful at dealing with issues such as anger, and restlessness.
There are still a handful of places left in Summer Camp over the two weeks, July 18th -21st, and 25th -28th, contact Lynda for booking or more details on 087 766 3406.
Tralee Boxing Club is delighted to announce that the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth has facilitated the inclusion of a number of Ukrainian refugee children in our Summer Camp this year.
A huge thank you is due to all at Kerry County Council for advice and support in achieving this. TBC’s project, supported by the Community Integration Fund, ‘ Building Friendship and Strength, One Punch at a Time’, aims to help alleviate the trauma of Ukrainian children separated from the security of their family members, especially fathers and brothers.
We hope that through the medium of boxing we can help support the wellbeing and mental health of our friends in the Ukrainian community.
We believe that involvement in our community club can help people displaced by war to repair the social and emotional disruption they have suffered, by building trust, improving self confidence, fitness and language skills through shared activities with local club members.
We also hope that being part of our club, will help our new friends come to better understand Irish culture and values, and to experience the well known craic we are famous for.
We are proud to say we have a number of Ukrainian boxers, of all experience levels, who train regularly with us here at the club, and their presence has served to energise and diversify the club wonderfully.
Finally, Tralee Boxing Club will hold it’s AGM this week, all Club members are welcome to attend. The meeting will be held on Thursday 14th July, at 7:30pm in Benner’s Hotel.
The meeting is a forum where all club members may voice their opinions or ideas on any issues relevant to the club. To propose a topic for discussion or to make a comment, club members are invited to pop on the TBC WhatsApp group and let us know what’s important to you.

School tours over, thank you teacher cards sent, another school year is finished and kids all over Tralee are experiencing their first weeks of freedom as the summer holidays are off with a bang.
It’s been a year full of changes for our smallest members, and we at Tralee Boxing Club are rewarding all their hard work and enthusiasm with a well earned break from training.
Little Champs boxing class (age 7-11) and Junior Boxers class (age 12-17) have now finished up until the start of September.
Enjoy the break boxers, get outside in the fine weather, keep active and remember to drink plenty of water.
We will see all our young warriors back in the gym, renewed, refreshed and ready to roll with the punches again in the autumn.
Tralee Boxing Club Summer Camp will run for two weeks this July. Camp is open to all children aged 7-13, regardless of fitness levels or boxing experience.
We introduce the basic fundamental skills of boxing, the emphasis being on fun and learning, with plenty of arts and craft activities to keep it exciting.
We will add a mix of physical activities to improve fitness, games, rounds on punch bags and on pads in the ring with qualified, garda vetted coaches.
Tralee Boxing Club Summer Camp has something for everyone, a chance for boys and girls to develop their confidence, improve fitness and strength, and to express themselves as part of a group in a positive, encouraging environment, with leaders dedicated to the ideals of respect, and inclusion. More details below.
Adult Class will continue for the summer months, on Mondays and Wednesdays, but at the earlier time of 6:30-7:45.
Everyone welcome regardless of age, fitness and experience levels. This is primarily a non-contact session, where the only requirement is a willingness to do your best.
We would like to extend our gratitude to local, community hero sponsors Lidl Stores, Castlemaine Road, Tralee who kindly allowed us to hold a flag day outside the store on Thursday and Friday last week to promote our Summer Camp.
We would also like to thank everyone who came along to find out more about the camp, to support our local, voluntary, community based club and the future stars of Irish boxing.

A great achievement for Kerry badminton to have both teams win and a huge congratulations to the players.

She has made us even prouder by being called up to the Irish team. Congratulations to Paddy Redmond who partnered Deina in the mixed doubles and also a congratulations to Fergal Hannon on winning the Grade D Singles and Sinead Galvin & Alan Nelligan who came second in the Grade D Mixed Doubles
Another congratulations to Suzanne Smith for receiving The Chairpersons Special Merit award at the Kerry Badminton Social on Saturday 14th. This was rewarded to Suzanne for her ongoing hard work and dedication to Kerry Badminton Association.

After a ‘marathon’ wait TRC are delighted to be back on the water again with medal wins at their most recent regatta outing.
You may have noticed that Tralee ship canal was drained of water for 5 months while essential works were completed, this gave Tralee Rowing Club the unfortunate problem of having no water to do what they love best!
All of Tralee ( including the swans ) was delighted to see the canal refilled recently but none more so than the rowers and we have all enjoyed seeing them on the water once again.
Nothing can keep the dedicated members of this club down and despite being unable to use the canal their adult & youth rowers kept up their training in their gym and competed in several Head of the River events and achieved great success at The Provinces Indoor Rowing Championships in November at UL.
The club members have now have hit the ground running by making up for lost time on the canal and competing in a busy regatta season.
Club Captain Heidi Giles said; “this season was even more frustrating than those impacted by the pandemic, it was so difficult knowing that other clubs were getting to train regularly on the water and although Muckross RC were incredibly accommodating and welcoming there’s not substitute for the convenience of using your own boats locally, our juniors, their families and our adult members were an inspiration to me in how they persisted despite the third season of disruption to our activities.”
Trips to The National Rowing Centre, Limerick and Cork have resulted in some impressive results with wins in C finals at Skibbereen Regatta for Womens division 1 double crew Niamh & Paula and Mens junior division 2 single scull for Sean Morris.
Castleconnell Boat Club hosted their 500m Sprints this weekend and TRC picked up medals with courageous performances by Sean Morris in the mens junior 16 single scull and the mens junior 16 double crew of Sean & Conall Mac Threinfir and a notable performance by Paula Moloney who achieved 2nd position in womens masters single scull.
At Castleconnell regatta a number of our juniors raced for the first time, raced in a single for the first time, or rowed in a new crew or seat. Each of these are challenging milestones for rowers and there was a number of results that Club Captain Heidi Giles feels deserve huge credit even if they did not yield medals.
She went on to explain “Domestic rowing events generally only reward first position with a medal, as if the early mornings and extreme endurance nature of the sport weren’t harsh enough!”
Recently Club members Tania Lawlor and Gloria O’Connor also completed a hugely impressive feat by ‘rowing’ a marathon of over 42km on Ergometers (rowing machines.)
This took them a gruelling 4 hours but their months of training paid off and they were back on the water the next day!
Tralee Rowing Club, founded in 2005 by present Chairperson Mary Bonner & Ed Sheldon and has been going from strength to strength with a dedicated and enthusiastic membership of men, women and youth rowers of all ages and abilities.
If you are interested in rowing or are a experienced rower who would like to return to the sport please contact the club by email at traleerowingclub@gmail.com for more information on membership

A great score by Thomas O’ Connor in dry but breezy conditions. Solid play was the order of the day as Thomas is now starting to see his efforts over the winter paying off.
Indeed this was day 2 of 2 very good golfing days for Thomas as you’ll see below if you read on.
Well done Thomas.
A birdie 2 on 16 by Daniel Spring was the only birdie recorded in the competition due to the tough conditions. Nice to get one and especially on 16.

Quadrangular International Tournament
Mark Gazi made his International debut for Golf Ireland playing against Wales on the opening day of the Quadrangular Tournament held in Wales. Mark played some stunning golf to help Ireland into a strong lead on day 1, individually getting his own account on the board too. It was a lead Ireland never relinquished as they ended up winning the tournament.
A week full of lifetime memories as Mark looks to build on a successful international debut.
Munster Womens and Girls Junior Open Championships
Ella Moynihan took on 107 other competitors in Barrow on Tuesday and ended the day with 2 trophies. The Alice Coman for being the lead Junior Girl qualifier and Margaret O’ Sullivan for leading the entire field home by 1 shot from eventual Championship winner Holly Hamilton from Belvoir Park in Belfast.

Q2 Tralee Imperials 8-15 St. Joseph’s
Q3 Tralee Imperials 16-19 St. Joseph’s
Q4 Tralee Imperials 16-21 St. Joseph’s
This was the boys final game of the season. Going in to the last quarter there was only three points in it but St. Joseph’s came back strong. Imperials never lost determination and tried their level best to score.
The boys have shown great improvement with every game. They have really enjoyed their season and are looking forward to meeting up again next season.
U14 BOYS T1
Tralee Imperials 37- 56 St. Brendan’s 23/03/22
Q1: Imperials 8 St Brendan’s 10
Q2: Imperials 21 St Brendan’s 35
Q3: Imperials 30 St Brendan’s 39
Q4: Imperials 37 St Brendan’s 56
This was Imperials final game of the season and they started well some nice scores from Conor McGibney and Ruairi Kennedy. A strong second half from Imperials again with Jamie O’Keeffe firing home some lovely jump shots and Eoghan Crowley playing good defence but they were having difficulty with St Brendan’s height advantage under the basket and were trailing 21 to 35 at half time. A good spread of scores throughout the team in the second half saw everyone contributing in either offence or defence but it wasn’t to be their night.
Scorers: Conor McGibney 12, Jamie O’Keeffe 7, Ruairi Kennedy & Jack Noonan 4, Luke Gannon 3, Eoghan Murphy, Nathan Hill O’Shea & Oran O’ Donoghue 2 and Eoghan Crowley 1.
It closed what has been a tough season for the boys but they are a spirited group who love the sport and I have no doubt they will return bigger and stronger next year. They can be very proud of themselves for constantly putting in a huge effort even when they were chasing the game they never gave up and improved with every game and were a pleasure to work with. A huge thanks to coaches Jerome, Henrique and Mike for their commitment to the boys throughout the year and to Sinead Egan for helping out with the table. And a final thank you to the club and all the parents for the support and bringing the boys to training and games around the county throughout the year. Take a well-earned rest and see ye all next year.
U16 BOYS T1
St. Mary’s 56-46 Tralee Imperials 24/03/22
We travelled to Castleisland to play our final game of the season against St Mary’s.
We started the game with great tempo and thanks to some great team defense and transition we jumped into an early lead and led at the end of the first quarter 10-15.
We kept up the same effort and intensity in the second period and managed to extend our lead to 20-30 by halftime.
Castleisland’s size and experience was obvious in the third quarter and with our lads tiring we struggled to keep our lead. We got a few crucial scores near the end of the third to head in to the final quarter trailing by one point 39-38.
The final quarter saw an exciting see saw battle where both teams traded leads on numerous occasions and with 2 minutes left we were just 2 points behind. A couple of bounces didn’t go our way and we had to send our opponents to the foul line to try to salvage the win. Unfortunately for us they were flawless from the foul line and we ended up on the losing side 56-46.
We put up a fantastic fight and with three players unavailable we travelled with just 6 u16 players and Ruairi from the U14 team.
It has been a tough season with injuries and sickness but the boys have improved immensely and we look forward to continuing our progress next season.

Tralee Imperials 57-48 St. Brendan’s 21/03/22
On Monday night we took on local rivals St Brendan’s in our penultimate game in Division 1 of the County League.
In a fast paced first quarter we struggled to get into our flow but stayed within touching distance thanks to some great shooting from Aivaras Uosis. We trailed 14-20 at the end of the first.
Our defensive intensity really picked up in the second quarter and this really set the tone for the rest of the game. Cian Dillane, Daniel and Oisin grabbed numerous rebounds in the period and with Aivaras patrolling the paint we limited our opponents to just 3 points in the second period. Roan and Oisin hit a few baskets to help us into a halftime lead 39-23.
The third quarter was a low scoring affair but with Cian Moran hitting a few scores we managed to maintain our 7 point lead heading into the fourth quarter ahead 38-31.
Brendan’s pressed hard in the final quarter but we managed to keep our noses in front to complete a 57-48 win to go top of the league.
We now look forward to a tough away trip to St Bridget’s next week in our final county league game.

The Brewster cup hasn’t been played in 2 years, it being the last Munster competition played in March 2020 before we went into our first lockdown.
Kerry were up against Waterford in UL sports centre on Sunday March 20th. The games were close but Kerry came out on top with a win of 6 games to 3. It is the first time Kerry has retained the cup. Congratulations to Sinead Galvin, captain, and the rest of the Kerry team on their brilliant win.
A Big Thank You to the Tralee Sports Complex for holding the Kerry Division 1,3 & 5 Mixed Doubles Championships on Bank Holiday Friday 18th March.

A great battle ensued in the third set and Stacey & Kyle finally hit the winning score. 21/13 19/21 22/20.
Thanks to everyone for taking part, Kerry Badminton Association and especially our sponsors Lee Strand and CPC.ie
Despite the morning showers, the it was a bright and sunny day for the St. Patrick’s Day parade. Tralee Imperials were delighted to partake alongside Garvey’s Tralee Warriors and St. Brendan’s BC. Thank you to everyone who joined us to march in the parade.
The U12 team 1 finished a brilliant season with an exciting game against a strong Glenbeigh team. We were missing three girls due to illness but the nine girls stepped up to the task.
A strong first quarter saw all girls getting on the scoresheet scoring 15 – 5.
The second and third quarters were a closer affair with Glenbeigh coming back strong but Imperials never lost their grip on the game. Excellent scoring combined with superb defense led to an 8pt gap going into the final quarter.
Glenbeigh pushed hard in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter closing the margin to one point. Imperials dug deep and scores from Sofia, Abby, Lauren, Taylor and Sarah led to a win 41 – 30.
Top scorer Sofia 10 pts.
The girls have had a brilliant season with some memorable games played, they were unlucky to lose to a very strong Castleisland side on two occasions by the smallest of margins. Their work rate is always immense and they are a fabulous bunch of girls who are all real team players. Each player has shown great progression in all aspects of their game and have been a joy to watch and coach. The future of basketball is bright with these ladies.

Scorers: Ruairi Kennedy 18, Conor McGibney 13, Filip Rybanski 2 and Eoghan Crowley 1.
Imperials were playing well in the first half and were unfortunate to be trailing by 15 points at half time they were unlucky not to have converted more scores and were working hard in defence and offence.
They worked hard again in the second half but the very fast pace tired them as they had only 2 players as subs. Special mention to Ruairi Kennedy who had a fantastic third quarter scoring 13 of Imperials 15 points and bagging 3 lovely 3 pointers. Final outing will be next Wednesday 23rd against St. Brendan’s.
U16 BOYS T1
Tralee Imperials 61-47 Rathmore Ravens (14/03/22)
On Monday evening our u16 Team 1 played Rathmore in Division 1 of the county league. We started the game with great pace and intensity and our press created a lot of easy transition baskets. With Tomas and Sean Og contributing hugely to the scoreboard we led at the end of the first quarter 31-7.
We were able to get all our players a lot of game time in the second period and with Sean Heaslip and William working hard on the defensive end we went in to the halftime break ahead 44-25.
This lead gave us an opportunity to work on different aspects of our game and we managed to extend our lead to 55-33 to finish the third.
Jamie and Tadgh worked well together in the final quarter and it was great to see Ryne get some court time after his injury. Ruairi from our U14 team got some valuable minutes and acquitted himself well. The game finished 61-47 and we now go in to our final league game with some momentum after back to back wins.
Scorers were:
Tomas Kennedy 22
Sean Og Brosnan 19
Jamie Burke 6
Sean Heaslip 4

Ryne Ybanez 3

U16 GIRLS T1
Tralee Imperials 38-31 St. Mary’s Castleisland (15/03/22)
The team came to this fixture hoping to make up for a heavy loss to St Mary’s at the start of the season, and they certainly did themselves justice.
The first quarter went our way with Grace Lucid and Sorcha Casey getting scores on the board to get us off to a great start. The score in this quarter was 13-10 to Imperials.
A change of defensive tactics by St Mary’s caught us off guard. Sorcha and Holly O’Brien kept us in the quarter with a basket each but we lost the second quarter 4-10. The score at half-time saw St. Mary’s ahead 17-20
Very determined defensive hustle and fast paced runs by Aoibhinn McCarthy, making a welcome return from injury and some solid defense from Saoirse Moriarty along with scores from Holly, Lucy O’ Donnell and Kelly Fitzgerald saw us win the third 7-4. The score was 24-24 at the end of the quarter and set us up for an exciting finish
All to play for in the fourth quarter and the team certainly showed their strength of character.
Grainne Breen came on and scored a shot at a crucial point in the game. Holly, who was top scorer and had a great game throughout, hit three baskets in a row. Kelly was outstanding under the boards, in both offense and defense, aided by Lucy O’ D who was very strong in offense all evening. The defense in particular by all players was top class.
We won the fourth quarter 14-7 with a massive team effort showing great maturity and held out in the last few minutes for the win at 38-31.
It was a great game of basketball played in a very sporting fashion by both teams and Imperials were delighted to get the win.
We hope the injured Castleisland player recovers well.

WARRIORS
Tralee Warriors defeated UCD Marian (88-71) on Saturday evening in the Superleague quarterfinal playoffs. This was the last home game of the season and once again it was fantastic to see the Complex full. Also, in a wonderful display of community spirit, the Warriors hosted guests from Ukraine and welcomed them in to the Tralee basketball family.
The win over UCD Marian sets up a tough semifinal vs Eanna BC, a replay of the cup semifinal. The National Cup champions will travel to Rathfarnam on Saturday 26th March to continue their pursuit of the double. Best of luck to the Warriors.
The Warriors U20 Men also faced a UCD Marian side in their National league semifinal last Sunday. They faced some strong opposition and this time it was the Dublin side the victors on a score line of 79-54.
