THE issue of the state of disrepair of footpaths in Rock Street and Edward Street was brought up at Monday’s meeting of the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council.
Both Fianna Fáil Cllr Mikey Sheehy and Sinn Fein Cllr Deirdre Ferris had separate motions regarding the footpaths before the Council.
Cllr Sheehy asked if the Council planned to repair the footpaths on Rock Street as he said some sections are in a serious state of disrepair and are a trip hazard. Cllr Ferris asked for a review of the footpaths in Rock Street and Edward Street.

Cllr Sheehy said there are certain sections of Rock Street and Pembroke Street which are in “shocking condition”. He said there is an elderly population in the surrounding estates in the area and when they are walking into town there is a tripping hazard.
Cllr Ferris said the issue has to be resolved and she had a motion about this before the Council in the past.
In reply, Council management said the section of road from Pembroke St toward the Pedestrian Crossing at Garvey’s Supermarket on Lower Rock St forms a part of the URDF Tralee Town Centre Pavements Phase 3.
With an estimated cost of around €4m, this project also includes for the redevelopment of New Road, Bill Booley’s Lane, Bridge Lane and Lower Castle St. and St Johns Plaza. It is anticipated that this project will progress to construction in 2024.
With regard to Edward Street, they said Tralee MD undertook footpath improvement works along Edward St earlier this year. If there are additional areas of concern, these can be considered for future works programmes.
