THE new Kerry Rose said she was still in awe of being chosen to represent the county at the Rose of Tralee International Festival this August.

We met freelance journalist Édaein O’Connell as she came in to enjoy Ladies Day at Listowel Races on Sunday and despite the lack of sleep after Saturday night’s selection in Siamsa Tíre, she was in great form and delighted with her new role.

“I’m still a bit in shock. Last night it felt like I wasn’t in the room when my name was called out,” said the Listowel native.

“I got about four hours sleep last night and it started sinking in when I woke up this morning. It’s a bit strange coming here today, Listowel Races is a favourite thing of mine and I’m coming in with the sash,” she said.

So why did Édaein decide to enter the Kerry Rose contest?

“I suppose it’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but I was away from home for a while. But now, the timing was right and my mom wanted me to do it. I’m delighted I did entered now.

“I’m an awful footballer and I’d never have made the Kerry team so this is my way of representing the county,” she joked.

Apart from writing for the likes of the Irish Independent, Sunday Times and Metro UK, Édaein also does some freelance social media management and has a monthly slot on Jennifer Zamparelli’s 2FM show.

With Kerry Rose duties on top of all that, she’ll be balancing a lot of roles over the coming months.
