Finance: Why A PRSA Could Be The Key To A Secure Retirement

.

Kevin Gorman, Head of Financial Planning at Fairstone Tralee, says when it comes to using your PRSA savings at retirement, there are several options…

The Personal Retirement Savings Account (PRSA) stands out as one of the most flexible and tax-efficient ways to prepare for retirement.

Whether you are approaching retirement age or still actively saving, understanding the benefits of a PRSA can help ensure financial security in your later years.

One of the notable advantages of a PRSA is the ability to access funds before reaching the standard retirement age.

Once you turn 60, you may draw from your PRSA whether you have formally retired or not, which can be invaluable if you choose to reduce working hours or face unexpected expenses.

In addition, retirement from age 50 may be allowed in the case of employed contributors and of individuals whose occupation is one from which people customarily retire before age 60.

In the unfortunate event of death before drawing from the PRSA, the entire value of your fund is transferred to your estate.

This feature ensures that your savings benefit your loved ones, making the PRSA an important tool not only for retirement planning but also for broader estate planning.

When it comes to using your PRSA savings at retirement, there are several options.

You can take up to 25% of your fund as a tax-free lump sum (subject to a lifetime cap of €200,000 across all your pensions, with amounts above that taxed), an opportunity to cover significant costs or simply enjoy life after years of disciplined saving.

With the remainder, you may choose to purchase an annuity for guaranteed lifelong income, transfer the balance to an Approved Retirement Fund (ARF) to maintain flexibility, keep it within a vested PRSA, or withdraw it as a taxable lump sum.

Each option carries its own benefits and considerations, depending on your income needs and risk tolerance.

A key feature of ARFs and vested PRSAs is income flexibility. From the age of 61, holders must withdraw a minimum of 4% annually, rising to 5% once they are aged 70 for the entire tax year (in practice, typically from age 71), or 6% where combined ARF and vested PRSA funds exceed €2 million, providing a steady income stream while still retaining control over the remainder of their savings.

This flexibility is particularly valuable when planning how to cover monthly expenses without exhausting retirement funds prematurely.

Another significant benefit is the tax efficiency of a PRSA. Contributions typically qualify for tax relief, reducing your income tax burden while working.

The fund itself grows in a tax-advantaged manner, helping your savings accumulate more effectively. Though withdrawals after the tax-free lump sum are taxable, careful planning can minimise the tax impact, especially when coordinated with other income sources.

Given the choices involved and the importance of securing a comfortable retirement, seeking expert pension planning advice is strongly recommended.

A qualified financial advisor can help tailor your retirement plan to your unique circumstances, ensuring that you fully benefit from what a PRSA has to offer and enjoy peace of mind in your retirement years.
