I cannot let today’s reviews pass without recognising that two of Ireland’s Oscar winners were laid to rest this week.
Both Brenda Fricker and Glen Hansard’s unique and exceptional talents were recognised nationally and internationally. They will both be sorely missed.
Turning to today’s films, Superman II (Saturday 5.35pm BBC Two) is a thrilling continuation of the Man of Steel’s story, directed by Richard Lester.

The film follows Superman as he faces three powerful Kryptonian villains, led by General Zod, who threaten Earth after escaping the Phantom Zone.
Christopher Reeve shines once again as Superman, with Margot Kidder as the fearless Lois Lane and Terence Stamp delivering a chilling Zod.
The soundtrack, composed by Ken Thorne, builds on John Williams’ iconic themes, adding energy to the action.
This film remains a fan favourite for its mix of romance, humour, and high-stakes superhero drama.

The Boss Baby 2: Family Business (Saturday 6.35 RTE One) is a lively animated sequel where brothers Tim and Ted, now adults, are magically turned back into kids to stop a genius villain from taking over childhood.

Directed by Tom McGrath, it features the voices of Alec Baldwin, James Marsden, and Amy Sedaris. Hans Zimmer and Steve Mazzaro deliver a playful and energetic soundtrack that perfectly matches the film’s humour.
It offers colourful animation, witty dialogue, and heartfelt family moments. It is a fun watch for both children and adults who enjoy light hearted adventures with a warm message.
Braveheart (Saturday 9pm RTE2) is an epic historical drama directed by Mel Gibson, who also stars as William Wallace, a Scottish warrior leading a rebellion against English rule in the late 13th century.
The film features strong performances from Sophie Marceau as Princess Isabelle and Patrick McGoohan, relishing the scenery chewing, as King Edward I.

James Horner’s stirring soundtrack perfectly complements the sweeping landscapes and intense battle scenes. The story blends romance, tragedy, and heroism, making it both moving and thrilling.
Braveheart won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. It remains a powerful tale of freedom, sacrifice, and the enduring human spirit, but not, it must be said, anything near historical accuracy.

The Idea Of You (Saturday 9.20pm RTE One) is a charming romantic drama about Solène, a 40-year-old art gallery owner, who unexpectedly falls for Hayes, the lead singer of a famous boy band, during a trip to Coachella.
Anne Hathaway delivers a heartfelt performance as Solène, while Nicholas Galitzine brings warmth and charisma to Hayes.
Directed by Michael Showalter, the film balances humour, tenderness, and the challenges of love in the public eye.
The soundtrack, composed by Siddhartha Khosla, perfectly captures the emotional beats. It is a pleasantly better than usual rom-com enhanced by the chemistry between the leads. Enjoy!
