Our movie guy, James Finnegan on some of the films on the box tonight…

The Croods (Saturday 6.35pm RTE One) directed by Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco, is a vibrant, funny, and surprisingly heartfelt animated adventure.

It follows the prehistoric Crood family—voiced by Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, and Ryan Reynolds—as they leave the safety of their cave to explore a strange, evolving world.

The plot blends slapstick humour with touching family moments, all set to a lively score by Alan Silvestri.

The animation bursts with colour and creativity, making the journey feel epic yet personal and earns a well-deserved nod to its charm and imagination.

The Miracle Club (Saturday 8.30pm BBC Two) directed by Thaddeus O’Sullivan, is a warm, heartfelt drama set in 1960s Ireland.

It follows Lily (Maggie Smith), Eileen (Kathy Bates), and Dolly (Agnes O’Casey) as they journey to Lourdes, each carrying private hopes and regrets. Along the way, they’re joined by Chrissie (Laura Linney), whose return stirs old wounds.

The film blends gentle humour with touching moments of friendship, forgiveness, and faith. The gorgeous score by Edmund Butt perfectly complements the tender storytelling.

Elle Woods is back in Legally Blonde 2: Red White and Blonde (Saturday 10pm TG4) this time swapping Harvard for Capitol Hill.

Reese Witherspoon charms again as Elle, now fighting for animal rights in Washington, D.C., under the direction of Charles Herman-Wurmfeld. Luke Wilson returns as her supportive fiancé, while Sally Field adds political bite.

The plot is light hearted but sprinkled with witty moments as Elle navigates politics with pink flair. Rolfe Kent’s bubbly soundtrack keeps the energy high. It is a feel‑good sequel that leans into optimism, style, and heart.

If you loved the first, this is like catching up with an old friend.

Hypnotic (Saturday 11.05pm RTE Two) directed by Robert Rodriguez, is a twisty, mind-bending thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end.

Ben Affleck stars as Danny Rourke, a detective searching for his missing daughter, only to uncover a shadowy world of mind control and illusions.  Alice Braga delivers a strong performance as Diana Cruz, a psychic who becomes his unlikely ally.

The plot unfolds like a puzzle, each revelation more surprising than the last and the atmospheric score by Rebel Rodriguez adds tension and mystery..

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (Sunday 12.20am RTE One) is a tense, witty New York subway thriller directed by Joseph Sargent.

Walter Matthau plays a sharp-tongued transit cop trying to outsmart Robert Shaw’s icy mastermind, who hijacks a train for ransom. The plot is tight, full of cat-and-mouse exchanges, and the city itself feels like a character.

David Shire’s jazzy, off-kilter score keeps your nerves on edge.   If you like gritty ‘70s crime dramas with personality, this one’s a ride worth taking.
