A trip to All-Ireland Junior Club Champions Ballymacelligott on Sunday saw John Mitchels pick up their first win of the County League campaign this season.
After three draws, a victory was important, and it was the first half scoring display by Mitchels that put them on the front foot, leading by 14 points at the break, and allowed them to withstand second half pressure from Ballymac.
In fine weather the opening minutes saw Mitchels dominate around the middle of the field, fielding high balls and picking up breaks. It led to an early point from Alan O’Donoghue, and a two-pointer from James Duggan, who was in fantastic scoring form all through the game.
Further scores from Pat Kearney, Darragh Cunnane, Shane Duggan and Sean Moloney made it 0-8 to no score after 10 minutes, and Mitchels were full value for their lead.
Jack Myers had a two pointer to stretch the lead to 10 points, but Ballymacelligott struck back with a goal against the run of play. A blow for Mitchels, but they responded immediately, when Darragh Cunnane goaled to restore the 10 point lead.
Alan O’Donoghue (f), Cian Holden and another two pointer from Duggan, followed by a two pointer from Cian Holden pushed the lead out further to 16 points, before Ballymac struck for their second goal of the game.
Late scores from James Duggan and Ballymac’s Darragh Regan closed the scoring for the half, with Mitchels leading by 1-18 to 2-1, but it could have been even better as a great run by Cian Holden saw him pass the ball across the goal to James Duggan to try and palm a goal, but the pass was a shade too high and the Ballymac goalkeeper was able to make the save.
It was a comfortable lead, but it was clear that Ballymac, who would have the wind in the second half, were going to come back strongly.
And so it proved, despite Mitchels having two goalscoring chances early in the second half, which Ballymac scrambled away. The hosts took control around midfield and scored 1-4 without reply in the opening 10 minutes.
Mitchels stopped the rot with points from James Duggan and Cian Holden, but it proved to be Holden’s last action of the game, as he picked up his second yellow and left Mitchels with 14 men for the remainder of the half.
However, Mitchels stepped up to the cause and despite 3 points from Ballymac to reduce the gap further, James Duggan scored a crucial point to give Mitchels breathing room, and added another soon after from a free. Despite a two pointer from Donal Daly, a late Jack Myers point left Mitchels with enough in the final minutes and the players and supporters celebrated a great win.

John Mitchels B team travelled to North Kerry on Saturday evening to take on the hosts Moyvane B in Division 7A of the County League. And it was honours even at the final whistle, which leaves Mitchels in a good position in the table. Special mention to Paddy McMahon, who landed 5 points during the game.
John Mitchels ladies
The first fixture of the Credit Union Donal Curtin County League Division 4 saw John Mitchels host Dromid Pearses on Sunday morning.
And it proved to be a comprehensive win for Mitchels, with some excellent performances from a number of younger players, making their debut at senior level. Combining well with the senior ladies, they were too sharp for Dromid and recorded a well-earned victory.
Membership is now due

Club membership is crucial in ensuring players are covered for insurance purposes. Those who have outstanding membership are asked to contact the club, and Club Registrar Jonathan Foley to finalise payment. Players who have not paid their membership will NOT be covered by insurance and will not be permitted to play

John Mitchels U8 Boy’s will continue their training on Sunday Morning next after the break for the long weekend. Everybody welcome from next Sunday Morning from 10.15am sharp. All Newcomers Welcome.
John Mitchels u-12
We played a great match against Listry last Tuesday and in a free scoring contest we lost 5-21 to 5-17. We have been drawn away to St pats in semi final which will take place Tuesday May 12th in Blennerville. We will train Tuesday and Thursday next week.
John Mitchels u-16
Congratulations to the John Mitchels u16 team who had a comprehensive victory over Kerins O’Rahillys in the final group game of the Central Region League Division 2 in Strand Road on Thursday evening.
It was an impressive performance and puts the team into the semi-finals of the competition where they will face Kerins O’Rahillys once more, this time at home, on Thursday evening.

Kerry u-20 Munster Final Win
Congratulations to the Kerry u-20 team on winning the Munster Final in Tralee on Thursday night, particularly to our own Gearoid White and David Sargent. They are now into an All-Ireland semi-final against Roscommon.
