Kerry Gardaí Report Rise In Crime In First Half Of 2022

CRIME figures for Kerry were released by An Garda Síochána at the Joint Policing Committee meeting on Friday afternoon and it shows a rise in all categories on the same period of 2021.

It should be noted however that COVID restrictions were still in place during some of the first half of last year.

In the four categories, Property Crime was up 26%, Crimes Against The Person 51%, Criminal Damage and Public Order 54% and Drugs and Offensive Weapons 18%.

With regard to Property Crime, burglaries were up 34% from 41 to 55; theft/unauthorised taking of vehicles were up 8% but thefts from vehicles were down 5%. Thefts from shops were up 35% from 154 to 208, while theft of other property was up from 64 to 72 (+13%).

With regard to Crimes Against The Person, assaults causing harm were up 169% from 29 to 78 while minor assaults rose from 127 to 196 (+54%).

In the Criminal Damage and Public Order category, criminal damage incidents were up 44% from 120 to 173. Public order incidents were up from 149 to 220 (+48) and drunkenness offences were up 79% from 110 to 197.

With regard to Drugs and Offensive Weapons, possession of drugs for sale or supply incidents were down 15% from 53 to 45 while possession of drugs for personal use detections were up 28% from 179 to 229. Possession of offensive weapons were up one from 20 to 21 (+5%).

Meanwhile, intoxicated driving detections were up 82% from 61 to 111.
