I’m concerned that my child is gambling online. Are there any protections in place?
Your child cannot take part in gambling if they are aged under 18. This means they cannot legally enter areas where gambling takes place or work in a gambling service.
Since 1 July 2026, if anyone wants to bet online, they must register and prove they’re 18 years or older. This means your child must provide:
• A photo ID showing their name and date of birth
• Proof of address
• A bank, building society, or credit union statement issued within the last 6 months to confirm their address.

What if the online gambling website doesn’t check this information?
The remote gambling licence holder (for example, a sports betting website) must be satisfied that your child is at least 18 years old and that the documents they provided really belong to them. If they don’t do this, the business could lose its gambling licence.
Will there be more legal protections introduced in future?
Yes. When the Gambling Regulation Act 2024 is fully in effect, it will be illegal to advertise gambling as an attractive activity to children. It will also be an offence to make, sell or give clothing and other items with the branding of a licensed gambling body to children. This includes offering items for free.
And, it will be against the law for commercial gambling licensees to sponsor:
• Events aimed at children
• Events where most of the participants or competitors are children
• An organisation, club or team, or any premises used by organisation, club or team that has children as members
• A public activity that appeals to children
The Government must pass additional legislation (commencement orders) before these laws come into effect.
