THE Mayor of Tralee has asked that CCTV be installed at the new housing development on Matt Talbot Road.

Tearmann na nGéanna, which is adjacent to the Island of Geese site, is scheduled to be completed later this year and Mayor Angie Baily made the request at the recent meeting of the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council.

Mayor Baily said the addition of CCTV would “help protect the development and promote pro-social behaviour in the area”.

In reply to her motion, Council management said any installation of CCTV must comply with the requirements of Data Protection legislation.

In considering such a request the Council must assess the necessity and the proportionality of the proposed scheme, as the CCTV cameras will capture images of identifiable individuals.

Mayor Baily said she is not suggesting that the cameras be pointed into the homes of the residents. She said the cameras would be there to ensure the properties are safe and that a similar approach has worked in Cork.

Mayor Baily said she would like the Council to work with gardaí to ensure compliance. The motion was seconded by Independent Cllr Sam Locke, while Cllr Deirdre Ferris said she would like it extended to all public spaces.

    Please Councillors make Tralee safe.
    Seen drugs being swapped
Would only go in winter time to Siamsa tire and no longer eat in Denny Street as strange characters make and female around
Increase all cameras as they are only one deterrent for our drug dealers and the poor addicts
