STUDENTS at Mercy Mounthawk have raised funds for a breast cancer charity by hosting an event, inspired by a former pupil who was diagnosed with the disease at the age of just 21.

The Transition Year students were taking part in a barista course at the school and decided to hold a coffee morning and bakesale for Breast Cancer Ireland as Róisín Long — a past pupil whose mother Joanne Long works at the school — was diagnosed with breast cancer in September of last year.

The TY students decided to hold the event in late March, with Róisín helping with the baking, and they eventually raised €1,750, which was presented to the charity on Monday.

Róisín from Ballymacelligott was understandably shocked when diagnosed with breast cancer last year.

“I found a lump by accident and I’m so blessed that I did find it. I was referred to CUH and, after tests, was diagnosed in September. I had surgery and chemotherapy and I’m starting radium next week, but it’s looking good,” said Róisín.

Great credit was due to teacher Leonora Breen, the TY students, Joanne and Róisín Long and all who helped raised funds at the event.

Breast Cancer Ireland is a registered charity, established to raise significant funding to support pioneering research programmes nationally, as well as to promote education and awareness on the importance of good breast health amongst women of all ages.
