A NEW theatre company, founded in Tralee by young people for young people, is set to bring their debut musical to the stage next week.
The Checkpoint Players will perform ‘The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals’ at St. John’s Theatre, Listowel on Tuesday, August 18th and Wednesday, August 19th.
The Checkpoint Players was founded this summer by teenagers Jenna O’Regan and Laura van de Kamp. They chose ‘The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals’ (a cult classic comedy-horror) to be their company’s debut because of its appeal to young and oldergenerations alike, with there being aspects of it that everyone will enjoy.

This is also the first time this show has been performed in Kerry. The show (written by Nick and Matt Lang, with a score by Jeff Blim) follows Paul Matthews, an ordinary, showtune-hating office worker trying to live the most normal life he can.
However, when a meteor hits his hometown of Hatchetfield, causing his friends to suddenly burst into song and dance, Paul turns into a reluctant hero to save the world from his worst nightmare…being trapped in a musical.

“Directing such a dedicated and talented cast has been an absolute joy.” Jenna said. “Their commitment and enthusiasm have brought so much to the show. It’s been wonderful to see everything come together, and I can’t wait for audiences to see what we’ve all worked so hard to create over the last few months.”
“This show has been a delight to co-produce,” Laura said, “and our incredible, hard-working cast has made the show become more than the sum of its parts and really brought it to life.”
Each cast member takes on multiple roles in this production, making a cast of just nine feel like something much larger. This tight-knit group of teens, all hailing from a range of dramatic societies and stage schools, have brought this show to life and are ecstatic to perform.Tickets are available on the St. John’s Theatre website for €12.
