IT was a mixed weekend for clubs from the Tralee area in the opening round of the Garvey’s Supervalu Kerry Senior Football Championship.
Austin Stacks went to Dingle on Saturday night and lost by 0-12 to 0-6. However, Sunday at Austin Stack Park saw St Brendan’s take on a fancied East Kerry outfit and the team (made up of players from Na Gaeil, John Mitchels, St Pats, Churchill and Ardfert) came up trumps winning by two points, 2-11 to 1-12.

Two first half goals from Ivan Parker and Diarmuid O’Connor saw them lead 2-4 to 0-6 at the short whistle.
Try as they might, the East Kerry men could not bridge the gap and despite getting to within a point they couldn’t find an equaliser and Daithi Griffin’s score deep into injury time sealed the a two-point victory.
St Brendan’s now face South Kerry next Saturday in Austin Stack Park at 7pm. East Kerry will do battle with Austin Stacks in a knockout game in Round 2B next Sunday at 3.30pm in Fitzgerald Stadium.
The second game in that double-header on Sunday featured Kerins O’Rahillys and Kenmare Shamrocks with many Kerry stars on show including David Moran, Tommy Walsh, Gavin O’Brien, Sean O’Shea and Stephen O’Brien.
Kenmare started stronger and were six points up with three minutes left in the first half, 1-9 to 0-6, the goal coming from David Hallissey.

But points from Tommy Walsh and Tom Hoare and a goal by John Ferguson reduced the deficit to the minimum. A Sean O’Shea free made it a two point game at the break.
The Tralee side started the second half the better with a Cormac Coffey goal in the opening minute. The points came thick and fast over the course of an entertaining second half.
With Kenmare a point up in injury time (1-17 to 2-13) it looked like they might hold on, but Kerins O’Rahillys weren’t to be denied and a free from Jack Savage and a late winner from Gearóid Savage sealed the win for the Blues.
Kerins O’Rahillys now face Dingle in the next round next Saturday at 4.45pm in Dingle. Kenmare take on Rathmore in Round 2B. Other games in the Round 2B are Mid Kerry v Kilcummin and Kenmare District v Shannon Rangers. Round 2A also features St Kierans v Dr Crokes and West Kerry v Killarney Legion.
