YOU’VE seen the Kerry hurlers beat all before them on the field this year, but now they’re facing their toughest challenge yet – on the dance floor.
Eleven couples are taking part in the ‘Kerry Hurlers Strictly Come Dancing’ event to raise funds to send the Kerry panel on a well-deserved holiday after the incredible year they’ve had.
Having won Division 2B again this year, the lads then beat Antrim in a play-off to progress to Division 1B next year. Then they went and won the Christy Ring Cup in June.
Yeah, they deserve a holiday alright!

Kerry hurler, James Flaherty, is one of the organisers of the event.
“We’re just doing a bit of a fundraising towards the holiday – obviously the County Board are contributing too. It’s not often that the Kerry hurlers have a year like we’ve had this year and it’s some bit of recognition for that,” he said.
The lads are planning on heading to Orlando in the middle of November, so the event – which will be held in McHale’s Stretford End Bar on October 17 – coupled with a golf classic on October 24 should send the lads off to the sun.
“It’ll be a great show on the night. A lot of the contestants are Kerry hurlers, with a few distinguished guests and we’ll have a few surprises in store on the night as regards judges,” said James.
“You’ll never again see some of these lads on a dance floor so this is your one and only opportunity to see them!” said James.
Ticket sales are going great so far with over 500 sold. Their hoping to sell at least 300 more before the event which will be held in a specially erected marquee.
James said the reaction from businesses in north Kerry had been phenomenal in terms of sponsorship and he thanked them on behalf of the panel.
Tickets for the event at €20 are available to purchase at Foley’s Gala Lixnaw, Dillane’s Maxol Station in Abbeydorney and Ross’s in Ballyduff. The players also selling them.
