STUDENTS from eight Kerry Education and Training Board (ETB) schools around Kerry were honoured at a special ceremony at the ITT on Friday night.
Over 220 people attended the event where Guest of Honour was Karen Gearon, humanitarian and equality activist and one of the original 11 Dunnes Stores strikers. She presented the awards to 78 students on the night.
“This is one of the most important annual events for all involved in Kerry ETB,” said Colm McEvoy, CEO Kerry ETB.

“It is an opportunity for the organisation to celebrate and highlight the achievements of students in Kerry ETB schools and in Youthreach Centres which Kerry ETB provide in partnership with the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service (KDYS) in Tralee, Killarney and Listowel.”
Over 3,100 students attend Kerry ETB post primary schools and 120 participants attend Youthreach centres. The students receiving awards were from Colaiste Gleann Lí, Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí, Killorglin Community College, Castleisland Community College, Coláiste Na Sceilge, Killarney Community College and Causeway Community College as well as those on Youthreach programmes.
A number of new awards were presented including a new Digital Literacy Award. “This is the first year that the individual students will receive a Digital Literacy Award for their achievements in ICT and highlights the commitment and expertise of Kerry ETB in the area of technology in post primary education,” said Education Officer Ann O’Dwyer.
Paul Lucey, husband and the family of the late Kathleen Lucey, a former Irish teacher of Tralee Community College commissioned a special award for Oral Irish in Kathleen’s memory.
This is now an annual award for the student who achieves the highest results in the Optional Oral Irish in the Junior Certificate.
The iMentor Award, sponsored by Aspen Grove Solutions, was presented to the school which best engaged with the iMentor programme. The winning school, Causeway Comprehensive, was chosen through their blog which outlined the students’ experience of setting up and managing the coding clubs.
Jim Finucane as Cathaoirleach Kerry ETB presented the Gold Medal Awards for best overall Academic Achievement to Peter O’Brien of Causeway Comprehensive and Róisín Ní Dhomhnaill of Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí who both achieved 600 points in their Leaving Certificate in 2014.
Peter is currently studying Pharmacy in UCC and Róisín is studying Medicine in Trinity College Dublin.
Kerry ETB congratulated and thanked all the students who received awards for their courage and commitment and school and Youthreach centre management, teachers, resource workers and parents/guardians for their enormous contribution to education.
